@Muffler Tech My wife's Accord cat was recently stolen. Due to the dealer/sub shop fighting with my insurance over pricing, I opted to have the car returned and to handle it myself. Since I replaced our Element's cat, I thought how hard could it be? The dealer mentioned that they wanted to use a fairly expensive replacement cat that was approved for the SULEV application and the insurance company did not. I assumed what ever was on the CARB's website was approved, and I almost pulled the trigger on a large order from Rockauto until I stumbled across your videos. These videos are highly educational and thank you for taking your time to put these together. If I was not located down in the bay, I would have had my car towed to your shop. My question(s) is, how can I confirm that my vehicle is in fact a SULEV equipped? The hood lacks the catalyst sticker, I am assuming it fell off as the wife has never been in an accident and is the original owner. The valve cover does not denote SULEV and has never been swapped out. Also there are no markings/stickers on the rear quarter glass or door jams. Thanks in advance!

'06 stolen yesterday morning and I just stumbled on this video. What will you do? I called the shop and they told me that factory part is backordered for 5 months. I have a 4CMC like Muffler Tech said in the video, which I can only install factory converter, and I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't have a car 5 for months...

@@thatguygio thanks, I just watched the new video from Muffler Tech and he explains all of my options and the new rules and exceptions. Looks like there are ca ref approved cats now due to the back order.
Great video. I bought a car at auction and the down pipe attached to the flex pipe was dangling from the undercarriage. You mentioned the down pipe for a different accord was removed and the O2 sensor cut. How can that be done, aside from unbolting it? I need photos for my mechanic, because he said depending on how the down pipe was removed from the manifold determines how big the job is going to be. Can you specify worst case scenario and best case scenario? I'm getting my car on jack stands tomorrow to inspect further.
California so many peoples got cut the catalytic converters... target 98-02 03-07 accord the most. Prius 04-09 Tacoma Tundra Pilot Crv Still more... I forget. Make sure anyone buy new car... better go weld roll bar on it. To protect the cat... The most is Tacoma and tundra. New car they still stolen the catalytic converter.
God damn it! My wife is the latest victim. Another statistic. It's getting out of hand. The fact that it's so easy is just mind blowing. 2007 Accord 2.4L SULEV. They getting bold asf. We have a carport that's literally steps away from our apt and others neighbors units. So violated. They lucky I didn't hear it cause I'd be filling out paperwork for a dead body right now. Justifiable if I thought they were drawing on me right? So mad.
Shouldn’t worry V6 are not targets for thieves because there not worth much, thieves are more concerned about the 4 cylinder accords because the cats are worth a lot more. Just thought I should share with you but still it’s always good to be cautious.

Thanks for the info. I have a 2018 Accord and as far as I can tell, the cat is under the hood on the front of the engine and not under the car which should make it difficult to steal.
Yes. This video was made when insurance was paying for full replacement. We have started adding aftermarket flanges and adapting to the existing exhaust.
i saw your Element video catstrap and was wondering if you have any answers to protect Toy Tacoma 2004 2.7L cat theft. CatShield makes protecton for newer 3.L+ engines and Prius but not 2.7L? There are other options but does your shop have an answer? I live in WA State have had the truck cat theft twice and before i replace it I am putting security sensor and some kind of inhibiter-any recommedations and did you follow up on Element CatStrap install you did in previous video?? Thanks for any recommendations
Thank you for the very informative video. Just had the catalytic converter cut off of my 06 Accord. I live in Connecticut so it's not a pzev. What I'm curious about is the replacement exhaust you used. I didn't see the Chrome finisher that that came from the factory on the car but it was on there in the finish shot. I was unlucky enough to have mine replaced with a very cheap replacement system, from the flex pipe back) which I am currently arguing with The Garage about. They replaced my factory exhaust with inferior parts even though it was covered by my GIECO comprehensive insurance. Also I am pissed because of the muffler tailpipe is now 3 inches too short and it did not come with a new Chrome finisher. FYI my resonator and my muffler were just fine. Not even any surface rust. Now the tailpipe is about three or four underneath my rear bumper cover. I mean if it's going to be that short at least the tailpipe could have been angled towards the ground. Not that I would have been happy with that because it would have look like crap. Now I'm going to have to worry about soot or even the deforming/warping of my bumper cover. Did you cut the chrome finisher off the old exhaust and tac it onto the new one? I was under the impression that they have to replace the parts with the same quality or better when it is an insurance claim. What I wanted also was to have an aftermarket anti-theft aluminium skid plate of sorts installed that covers the whole catalytic area of the exhaust so I don't have to worry about this happening again. But the insurance wouldn't cover it and the price I was given was astronomical. I really am impressed with the work you did with the tubing welded on for anti-theft. Any input? Is my argument about the replacement exhaust valid? FYI The flexpipe was not taken in my theft but the rear flange was.
05 accord - Instead of replacing the whole exhaust system, could've you just weld a small pipe and flange to the old exhaust system so that it'll still be bolted up to the new cat converter?
This is correct. When customers pay out of pocket we give them this option, I should have mentioned in the video that my example was an insurance job and they will pay for new parts.
We had someone stealing Catalytic Converters from my work parking lot. They kept coming back until they got caught. Was stealing a few a week. Not the smartest theives
The cat was stolen from my 02 accord SULEV over Christmas weekend. I've been told that Honda discontinued the part. Is this true? If so, what can I do? I realize it's an older car, but I can't afford to replace it. To add insult to injury, I got it out of the shop with a new transmission about a month before the cat was cut.
@@Dima-bd7co It's against the law here in California for salvage yards to sell used cats, and I imagine it's like that in every state. That's not to say there aren't shady salvage yards who still sell used ones, just that it's probably not worth the penalty if they get caught.
Hi Cody. My son attending who was attending UC Davis had his 2005 Honda Accord Catalytic Converter stolen and then replaced at your shop in Dec 2021 and we added this $350 Level 2 Theft Prevention pipes. No further issues at his apartment in Davis! He is now home in SoCal and the first day of his new job in Anaheim he returned to the parking lot to find his Catalytic Converter was stolen again!!! They cut through both pipes (stock and thicker theft prevention) in the front and in the back (4 cuts)! We are of course FAR away from your shop now and thinking we should go with the $360 Miller Cat Shield this time. What do you recommend?
My Honda Accord 2007 cat converter was stolen along with upwards pipe, and sensors. My car has a LEV designation. 7HNXVO2.4KKC. My insurance will not cover. What options do I have? Repair and pay out of pocket?
Muffler Tech; Thanks for the info. Wish I had seen your videos prior to the theft. Very informative, and a good way to “arm yourself” with information, turn it into a learning experience.
Will installing a roll bar affect the other parts warranties or in general? I had a "gas leak" according to the mechanic, but I am seeing a flurry of cats being stolen in the town I work and wonder if it was something related to the cat...? It was a very costly repair and Honda only specific replacemwnt. A I am just thinking ahead to protect my Honda accord 2013. Will look for stickers to see if my vehicle is at more risk. Thanks for helping us understand and taking the time to help your neighbor!
Just got mine stolen what options do we have before spending all that money at the Honda dealership? Am I able to find the same car and use that exhaust ? Because i have heard that I can get an exhaust that’s 5 years older then my car and use that and it’ll be the same thing is that true ? I need to know because I have heard it all but need to know from a professional.
If you live in California the only one that will work as the correct part number for the year make and model vehicle you’re driving. An older exhaust will get caught up in an emissions inspection.
@@mufflertech Yes I live in California I’m actually 40 min away from Sacramento , this just has never happened to me . So if I find the same exact car I can use there cat?
Suppose you grind the head of the bolt down a bit so it is stripped...or use a carriage bolt...and then use a triangle groove nut? One in the front flange, one on the back flange? This would make it tough to remove the bolt. Instead of welding the roll bar, do you think a large amount of exhaust putty and exhaust repair wrap to attach the roll bar (or cable, or steel bars) would be as good a deterrent? They would have to cut thru all the putty & wrap, along with the roll bar (or steel bars, or cables). I'm thinking of a lot of wrap... Shops around here generally don't like to do this kind of work...so I'm trying to come up with a DIY solution without welding, that may be a deterrent, maybe not the best, but still a deterrent.
Hey I have a question for you if I want to do the same thing to my car the converter the way you protect it how much would it be and where are you located thanks
Great video! I really like the roll bar tubing welded to the sides of the pipes. I have been wondering for some time if rebar would be as effective at preventing being cut? As far as the flange goes, why not just cut it off of the new exhaust pipe/muffler assy. (or better yet buy a new flange, or a used one from a salvage yard) and just weld it onto the original pipe/muffler system? It sounds less expensive to me for the customer, and wouldn't require altering the new cat and voiding its warranty. This would be unless the insurance is footing the entire replacement bill, at which point I'd rather have an entire new system.
We are doing this now. It took some time to find a source of aftermarket flanges that were of high enough quality to work and that were available in mass quantity.
@@mufflertech I figured as much, your shop really seems to be ahead of the curve on this. What are you thoughts on using rebar, or even heavy gauge linked chain vs the roll bar tubing as far as protection?
@@escusc I have a 2002 EX V6 and my cars cat was stolen 2 days ago so I'm thinking they are getting desperate, or stupid since they ignored my neighbors Prius parked in front of my car or my 1999 Ford F150 parked behind it, which would have been easier to access.
My family just bought a 2007 Accord V6 with the ULEV designation. Will this be a target? We also have a 2005 Civic LX with the same designation. Will this also be a target?
Why wouldnt an after market not pass smog? No one checks the number. If they perform the same it will pass. Who cars about the warranty on a 10+ year old car.
Since the implementation of the new STAR smog check program, smog stations are being very careful in ensuring vehicles are equipped with proper/required catalytic converters. The smog check technician will check your vehicle's catalytic converter EO numbers. If they don't match the required CAT EO numbers for your vehicle will fail the visual portion of the smog check as an "emissions tamper".

Yes, the noise the car makes in the beginning is a from the catalytic converter being stolen. If you have a Honda product and you hear this sound, especially with a check engine light, you very likely are a victim of the theft.
Assuming you live in California and your Honda is an “SULEV”, no an aftermarket part from anywhere will not be a legal replacement through the normal channels

Depends on the shop. Most are using rebar which is not effective at all. We use 120 wall roll bar tubing that has been increasingly hard to get and has gotten very expensive. We currently charge $450 installed.
@@mufflertech i am seriously considering to get the miller cat shield for the 7th gen accord with your 120 wall roll bar tubing. can your tubing be welded to allow the installation of the miller cat shield? my understanding is ccm does not offer a catshield for the accord.
Sorry maybe it wasn't clear to me but basically what you're saying is.. if my car is 4CMC, what you're saying is I can't get an after market part at all??? If so, I won't pass my next smog check? In other words, OEM only?
It may help to install an impact alarm attachment microphone under the car near the cat. It will go off with noise. It may not save you from the initial 1st cut but may scare them off before it's taken completely out
The exhaust system is isolated from the chassis with rubber hangers. The sensitivity of the shock sensor would have to be set fairly high to pick up on any vibration from cutting the exhaust. We’ve also tried glass breakage mics, they work when their sensitivity is up high enough, but they false all the time with similar ambient noises.
My Honda element and Honda Accord's Catalytic Converter has been stolen five times in Baldwin Park and El emote within 2 years. The cost were more than my car value.
@@alfredomorales2202 I got it from junk car used auto part very expensive. But sometimes, you could buy a certified after market one from muffler shop. If your car isn't registered in New York or California is much easier buying a cheap after market one.

You’re correct that they no longer dyno or sniff test newer vehicles in California. They do however do a very thorough visual inspection which includes verification of the catalytic converter. The cat from my '07 Honda Accord was stolen 2 months ago. My car is still in the shop because the cat is on backordered from Honda manufacturer. Based on your experience, what is the estimated time it will take for Honda to have the part available?
@@mufflertech Thank you for your reply. It makes me feel better to know that my car will get fixed. The shop keeps telling me that there is no release date for the cat, which can be frustrating.
In theory you only need to prevent cutting/disconnecting the upstream side of the Cat. You don't need protection on the downstream side. No one is going to cut through the cat itself.
Theft deterrent options simply slow down the theft. If a thief really wants the part they will get it. Protection on both front and rear make it that much more difficult.
Gut a local dealer to fit a home made cat cage / lots of hi tensile steel cable round round the cat multiple times and welded to the chassis overlaid with a steel plate welded on multiple points to the chassis too. You could cut it off but will take ages cos you would have to cut all of the welds and you can’t see where they are. Good luck with that! Basically if they’re daft enough to try a) you’ll hear b) you can call the police and they could probably get there in time to catch the crooks

That sucks. Does anyone know if they make those cat shields for our older Accords?
We only use factory parts when the insurance is paying for it. We transferred the finisher from the old system.

Not as of now
Suppose you grind the head of the bolt down a bit so it is stripped...or use a carriage bolt...and then use a triangle groove nut? One in the front flange,
one on the back flange? This would make it tough to remove the bolt.
Instead of welding the roll bar, do you think a large amount of exhaust putty and exhaust repair wrap to attach the roll bar (or cable, or steel bars) would be
as good a deterrent? They would have to cut thru all the putty & wrap, along with the roll bar (or steel bars, or cables). I'm thinking of a lot of wrap...
Shops around here generally don't like to do this kind of work...so I'm trying to come up with a DIY solution without welding, that may be a deterrent, maybe not the best,

The exhaust system is isolated from the chassis with rubber hangers. The sensitivity of the shock sensor would have to be set fairly high to pick up on any vibration from cutting the exhaust.
