Yeah people are asking "why was it never finished", I do wonder, but it might have nothing to do with the game even? It might be that people just didn't know the IP, (I sure dont making it confusing like PiZLe said) or they lost the license? I do really really like that the rolling mechanic seems to null damage? That's so great as many of this era just had the stupid damage upon contact which didn't make sense in a 2D world. Castlevania could have used that! So rolling past is great. BUT at like 3:50 we see the guys with rocks clearly hitting him and his health not going down? So I wonder if they turned down damage for this video capture? Maybe the game was super hard in reality? -- -Or the hit detection is just broken because he does take damage finally from some ooze water, but boy he ran through a LOT of spiders, rats and projectiles with no damage....
@FrankNFurter1000 why he makes a very good point I mean come on this was a horror game from the late 90's why r there jump scares#those r a late 2000's thing bruh
I never thought it would be possible to make a video game of a board game like Atmosfear/Nightmare, but this is amazing. They did a great job retaining all the important key aspects of the board game to make what looks like a very enjoyable SNES game. To bad this wasn't released.
OMFG it IS that board game! I recognized the face in the thumbnail and was like "noooooo way....". All I can really remember is the guy's face getting grosser as the game went on and the constant "STOP!" that would make us all jump, lol.
@@CarlosGonzalez-ll6xx It seems like he put together the fact that the board game is directly linked to this video game. It's the observation that lead too his conclusion. Why are you asking questions a child could answer in a condescending tone? That is the real mystery.
Loved playing this board game with my siblings and friends as a kid. I wish the would have released a DVD or CD ROM version with different cycles so you would memorize the game sequences by the 4th time you played or even better release it now just more story boards.
I had it as a board/VHS combo. Never played it though. I was reaching that age when it would no longer be cool to play, yet friends and I weren't quite old enough to enjoy the silliness and camp of it all. 12 to 14 is just a crappy age.
They have plenty reason : 1- They may have missed its deadline several times, that they brought it too many times from a later date, to the point that the company eventually cancelled it. 2 - Maybe Nintendo surely saw the game and they may have put a red light on it because they find it too creepy for the audience. 3 - Lack of budget to advance the project to its final version.
To me, who never played the board game, it kinda looks like a LJN game minus source material fame. In a time were 90% of the gaming library was sidescrolling platformers and often either built upon much more well known lore or tried to create a new mascot, and take the crown from Mario, me thinks this could've ben a little bit too much of a niche product. I mean a board game that was famous mostly in Australia!?
This looks great. I can see some of the effects work isn't finished and the sounds are a little wonky but a little more polish and this would be awesome.
I've never seen a game before where the ending is just the devs writing "The End" at the point that they got to unfinished. Definitely interesting, gonna put this on my SNES, has a good vibe going on.
I had the board game. You had to put a VHS video in that explained the rules and the game had a 60 minute timer. As the time went down it got more and more frantic. Also you drew cards and many of them had times on and whenever that time appeared you had to do whatever it said on the card. So it might have said "At 58:02:45, scare the oldest player. Move forward if they scream", something like that. Caused a lot of fall outs in our family...
this actually looks pretty amazing, looks very similar and has a good atmosfear like the Nosferatu game by Seta i believe for SNES. The only thing i dont like is the dice colelcting it seems a bit off compared to the other pickups kinda gives me a bit of a Wizard of OZ game vibe instead.
SETA games I adored. Nosferatu, Castle of Dragon, 8 Eyes. Athena developed Castle I think though. SETA published. I remember a ad in a Nintendo Power of Bio Force Ape but that it. Never heard of again. 2008 or 09, company liquidated.
How well does this control, out of curiousity? It seems like it controls well from watching the gameplay, but your run is also so clean that it looks like it could be a TAS. Very well practiced.
It's like a mix between Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Nosferatu. And looks really good :D The man in the robe makes me think about Wax Works cinematics.
I still have the original board game and the 3 sequel tapes for witch, zombie and vampire plus the harbingers. Never knew there was an unfinished game, looks really good, I would have bought it definitely.
They also made a Mummy expansion for the DVD version of Atmosfear, and a Soul Rangers expansion for the Harbingers game. Sadly, the last 2 planned expansions (Poltergeist and Werewolf) were never released. There is also a 2023 Kickstarter anniversary version of the original game (you don't a vhs to play it).
I loved the board game back in the day, didn't know it was australian. The video game seems to have little to no link to the board game though but nice to know it existed.
me and my friends use to play the board game all the time. wish I could have seen the full game. I was looking forward to seeing the bosses.. especially Baron Samedi and Bathory
Pretty good concept - I remember the 'board game' being advertised at the beginning of rented VHS tapes. I wonder why they pulled the plug on this especially when it was so near completion
I have both board games Atmosfear and Nightmare (both basically the same game) and I’d have totally bought this back in the day. I wish I’d gotten the “expansions” for Nightmare.
looks better than some released SNES platform games gameplay-wise..graphics are pretty good too. even the small touches like when the character sprite goes darker against the moon when traversing the rooftops.
I was thinking, someone should finish it up best they can and release it on rom sites. Like along with the fan games and rom hacks, not for profit or anything even.
i loved the board games i still have 4 of them as well as the main game which you had to have to play the other casset tapes and then the dvds that came out i must say the video verison was much more simple than the dvd ones more to mess with the dvds ones was but over all great games loved them and i never knew this was done pity
I think those “stop” moments would have scared a lot of kids, the game is just playing and then the dude with green eyes jumps in your face. I played the board game many years ago, and it had a different actor instead of the guy in the game here.
Of all things, _Atmosfear_ really should have been a video game. I think this captures the creepy, oppressive vibe of the board game rather well, but I feel it could have used some more personality in the monsters when you encounter them. Or even get glimpses of them throughout the levels, maybe directly addressing you so know why you want to stop them. It's a pity not all the bosses are implemented here, 'cos I would have liked to see their appearances, besides Anne de Chantraine and Gevaudan. The map fascinated me the most watching this. There's some nice details here; The Gatekeeper' eyes following you as you move, the moving parts across the different structures to draw in the eye, I also like how each completed area gets destroyed by the Gatekeeper after you finish it. It'd be nice if he actually did more than pause the game for a bit when he pops up, though.

The dice rolls mechanic for points was a nice touch.
The way the background moves and all... Isn't it better than 95% of games back then ? Maybe it's been done recently actually
Character animations looks a bit to diverse and advanced also.

Not really, there were much better looking games out on and before 1994.
This is just decent looking.
Likely because the US weren't allowed scary games for the SNES.

If this game was developed back in 1994, it was still pretty advanced for an SNES game. Full speech? That wasn't common for 16 bit consoles.
