While Turbo Diesel cars are common place in Europe, they are very rare and somewhat unusual vehicles in the United States. Only German manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen import diesel powered cars into The U.S. So when General Motors and Chevrolet bring a European diesel to America it is worth testing.     Does he not realize that by having traction control on the computer will not allow the car RPMs to go above 1200 while trying to break boost it. When you turn off traction control you can rev it up to 2400rpm then launch. Talk about wheel spin!

      +Zachary Phelps I've seen a lotta videos this guy does. He likes to think he's a car guy - but he really doesn't know anything of real value about cars in general. He's basically a yuppie that somehow conned someone into giving him a pretty cool job. And you are absolutely right about the TC - my highly modified '15 GMC Sierra Denali 3500 Dually w/ Duramax will do the same thing - not allow any boost to build with the TC on. Take it off, and she'll launch like you wouldn't believe.

    Most reviewers forget temperature. It makes a significant impact. Calculating the Density Altitude will give you a better picture of how an engines performance will be impacted

    Where else would you see a 1967 Alfa on a Friday followed by a Diesel Chevy Cruze review? That variety keeps things interesting...and keeps Roman/Nathan/crew on their toes & entertaining.

    In India, we got the cruze 0 to 6mph or 0 to 100kmph below 9 seconds.

    4000 feet of elevation must not mean anything to most commenters. I live at around 3700 feet and drove to Seattle and my car came alive the closer to the ocean I got. I never thought it would have made such a noticeable difference.

    There meant to save on gas milage. Not speed. If your buying diesel it not for speed but for power, distance.

    Keep up the great work Roman. Some of these people who don't see the benefit of comparing 0 to 60 times at a mile high just don't get it. True this car wasn't designed for the quarter mile, but some of us want to know how much we are giving up to get the high mpg.

    It was my sister's Cruze that I drove that had an aftermarket turbo that would make a loud turbo spooling sound.

    I did some more research. I saw an article saying that this turbo diesel is running 21 psi. Atmospheric pressure is 12.2 psi at 1 mile above sea level and 14.7 psi at sea level. That means it should still be getting approximately 140 horsepower-ish at one mile above, right [(12.2+21)/(14.7+21)]*151? Well, I think I may have discovered the missing piece of the puzzle. According to another article, the car is 3500 pounds.

    its a citroên ds :) was manufactured and marketed from 1955 to 1975. Styled by Bertoni and the French aeronautical engineer André Lefèbvre,it was known for its aerodynamic futuristic body design and innovative technology, including a hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension.

    I have a 2012 turbo diesel manual. Pretty sure I could get that number down to 6-7 seconds if I want. It's a quick car.

    I driven one, the acceleration and the turbo caught me off guard when I pressed on the accelerator. Almost crashed because I wasn't used to the very responsive power steering.

    It is interesting to see how the manufacturers try to balance diesel's better economy against its inherent slowness. Too slow- no sale; too little economy- no sale. Even if the balance is just right how many folks will be in the market for what the Cruz diesel offers?
    Nice mash/match up with the Chevy and Ford-looking forward to the result. Have to wonder how a diesel hybrid would do.

    So I own a 2009 VW Jetta TDI and off you want to go fast, you don't floor it...yes it sounds crazy but being a diesel, you want to keep it in the torque band (1750-3700rpm) and you can do that by rolling into the throttle instead of flooring it...can be a pretty fun car with all thee torque it has!

    I don't suppose you know a lot about cars if you think that. AC uses a LOT of power, newer pumps have become more efficient but still, turning off the AC will help a lot on a low powered car. On a big ass US V8 it may be less notable but there will still be power loss.

    Diesels aren't made for fast acceleration, they are made for low engine speeds and masses of torque compared to their gasoline counterparts. And it's not letting the engine build up torque, it's the turbo building boost in the plumbing.

    That is true. Combustion air density is not a concern for electrics.

    Or shift it with the DSG when your flooring it to change up early. But I agree, my uncle has a 2012 Jetta TDI and its so much fun to pull away from the lights and spin the tires as well as agressive city driving. I dont care about the torsion bar, or cheap interior its a fuel efficient fun car that will haul a family around

      They made it worse with the mk6 interior quality dropped off along with handling. The mk5 jetta was the best out of all of them.

    Not really, the one in the Cruze is GM's own engine (GM Family Z) produced by General Motors Korea which replaced the one from VM Motori. Fiat diesels in some GM cars are known as GM Family B.

    Roman...I think it's better to inform the viewers that brake-torquing could damage the torque converter in an automatic car. You don't want some kid trying it out on his car or his dad's car and that could result into breaking the car.

    I rented a 2012 Panda, his old Jetta was a 2002. That ten year gap should have more engine tech to make it more fuel efficient and/or powerful. I averaged 56mpg which was pretty good but his 1.9 averaged 55mpg and its on lower grade fuel since its not in Europe and altiude is higher where he lives. His Jetta had 90hp and the Panda had something like 70. I've had no issues with VW's 1.9 or 2.0TDI its a real winner. Its also on Wards 10 best engines. Bigger engine shouldnt mean anything

    The Passat is also a midsize, not really a fair comparison. You should be quoting the numbers on the POS Jetta TDI.

    IMO, the guys knows what he is talking about, and the vehicles are all average. Its what you will actually see driving down the road, what most people can actually afford. And all the main points about the car that you would like reviews on are met.

    My cruz 2013 ltz turbo does 0-60 in about 8 seconds with manual trans.

    It is in the best power band, it's a diesel, not naturally aspirated gasoline engine. There's no power beyond 4000 rpm, redline is there to stop you from destroying your engine.

    Not if you do it only once, plus most modern cars like the Ford Edge, VW Golf, and the new Corolla only let you rev up to about 1400, I think brake-torquing could damage any car, if it were a manual you'd burn the clutch out.

    Agreed plomaman. With that torque figure something is wrong with the time. What are the gear ratios. You shouldn't have to shut the AC down either.

    Theres a sweet spot with the car and the gas pedal. You cant really floor it. I've been 5 to 6 second 0 to 60s... and turn that traction control off.

    Obviously you give something up to get that 46 mpg highway. From the reports I'm reading it seems people are not having any problem getting up into the 50's with the Cruise Diesel. I would expect it to hold its speed on the highway well, but you won't win any races with it.

    I would not be surprised if you beat the Cruze diesel. Its off-the-line lag is almost dangerous. I've driven it and I can say it's engine response is stupidly slow. I prefer a Jetta TDI by far

    I dont like the Cruze diesel, I much prefer the Jetta, but I have to defend it and say you're wrong. A Prius C is almost down 200ft/lbs of torque and 100hp. It weigh 300lbs less and its more aerodynamic. The Prius C would struggle to do 0-60 under 17 seconds in Colorado since its 0-60 times in California are 11.3 seconds and the Cruze's is 8.5

    You didn't actually need to turn the AC off. The compressor would have automatically disengaged when you hit the throttle. It does that to preserve the compressor by not exposing it to excessively high RPM. Oh well...too late now...haha

    This car isn`t actually that economical for a diesel. The engine is big, the car is very heavy for a compact car, and the automatic transmission increase consumption even further. Also the diesel engine is not as refined as that from most other manufacturers. So all in all for the US market, I think the 1,4 liter turbo petrol with 140 hp makes a lot more sence.

    Torque braking is faster because it cancels out the fact that the transmission goes into neutral when stopped.

    No Fiat makes only average diesels. When I went to England for a holiday, I rented a Fiat panda 1.3 diesel and it was terrible. It was dangerously slow, quite loud and unrefined. My uncles old 2002 Jetta TDI was more quick and it was actually quieter. His new 2012 Jetta TDI is super refined and quiet and it has more than enough power. Even enough to do a mini burnout.

    There's no way it got 264 lbs-ft of torque. With that amount of torque, it would accelerate a lot faster. Also, while Roman floored it, I saw that the transmission is changing gear 1000RPM below red line, thus, when the gear is changed, the motor isn't in its best power band after. They probably did that for marketing reason, that is give a better fuel economy. I would like to see a 0-60 1 mile above sea level with roman changing gears himself, even if its an automatic transmission

    This guy isn't putting the cars power to it like it should be done. He's using no brake boosted launch, has traction control on and tested the car in heat most states won't reach unless it's a hot summer day. Other chevy cruze diesel reviewers have gone 0-60 in 8.5-8.6 seconds. That's faster than the turbo 1.4L using manual/automatic and that averages a 9sec 0-60. It's all in the driver and drivers knowledge.

    Brake-torquing for a second or two certainly won't hurt anything. I (and many, many others) do it all the time to build boost off the line in my 335i. But I agree, an ignorant kid doing it for several seconds could damage something.

    when the price of petrol is 8 dolars the galon, like un my country you will love the sound of a diesel.......also the car its very quiet inside, you almost dont notice that is a diesel.

    You are compares 1.3 diesel to 1.9 diesel. It's very easy to guess that bigger engine is stronger.
    My friend is VW/Audi mechanic. He owns Passat TDI, and clearly says that GM/Fiat engines are much more reliable etc.

    VW 2.0 TDI PD came out in 2003/04. In 2008 came out 2.0 TDI CR.
    2.0 TDI PD is horribly unreliable, it's newer CR version might be better.
    Diesel in Cruze is made in the same technology as is in modern VW diesel engines.

    I think TFL has the best car reviews in the business but to me those mile-high zero to sixty runs at 95 degrees are pretty much irrelevant. I live in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia at about 400 meters above sea level and conditions here are vastly from different from Colorado's. I would expect a car's performance to be as well. And about that brake-torquing thing, don't you guys worry about possibly damaging test cars that belong to someone else? Just asking, and keep up the good work,

    No they're not but the electric motor still doesnt provide enough boost to get that underpowered 1.5 litre engine up to speed very quickly.

    hi, I own the 2012 chevy cruze LTZ vcdi in India. its a 2.0L, 166 bhp MT stock version. it does 0-100 in 9 seconds, I was hoping the american version to be much faster. the
    car almost costs a 30K USD here :(

    Mine runs that about 4 seconds faster... what r u doing wrong? I'm in MA, and have big continental DWS'S on it, but do the tires and altitude make that much of a difference?
    Gotta say, that car is punchy as hell, spools right up - pulls like a little Peterbilt. Maybe you got a lemon..?

      Altitude makes a huge difference. They don’t stress enough during these tests that they are 5k feet above sea level and it makes a huge difference. People who aren’t regular viewers to this channel who don’t know/understand this get very annoyed with their times.

    Agree American cars are behind in diesel technology. Audi and VW has the best diesel motors. Quite, fast and better gas mileage. Possibly the best in gas mileage.

    Oh, don't get me wrong, I love diesels! My dream truck is diesel and the only Mercedes I'll ever want is a diesel haha I test drove one of these, and in comparison to other diesels, it sounds like crap. At idle and maintaining speed it was fairly quiet though, yes

    This car wasn't engineered to win any drag races, its purpose is to put up high fuel economy ratings. Kind of a pointless test if you ask me.

    Vw's 2.0TDI has been winning awards every year since 2009 when it came out. And I've gotten his Jetta to do 62mpg while the A/C was blasting in the ROcky Mountains on a 30+ degree day. And no its not unreliable, the electronics that make everything work are unreliable since they're too expensive to manufacture in Germany so they must be made in China or Mexico. The engine would last millions of miles.But you have to admit the Cruze diesel is terrible

    GM/Fiat 1.3 diesel won engine award in 2005 ;) Panda 1.3 does 60 mpg (us gallons).
    Vw 2.0 TDI PD is horribly unreliable. There is a lot bad informations in internet about these engines. My friend Vw/Audi mechanic says clearly, don't buy 2.0 TDI PD never!

    Next time? No I will never rent a Fiat next time. I had three warning lights appear on the instrument cluster and the engine light started flashing. I took it to Avis and they gave me another Panda. I think the other one was a lemon but anyways I didnt like the Panda. Its loud on the road, nervous under braking, and would probably be slower than a non-turbo diesel prius 1 cylinder towing 20000 lbs. And yes the Jetta was loud, now its not.

    Its an automatic...dont you need a stick to really see how fast you can get to 60 with that engine??
