We fear that's not correct. A turbo can help compensate for the lack of air density but it does not negate the fact that the air has less density when it first enters the engine. While a turbo will force more air into the combustion chamber it will not increase the air density to sea level density.
KIA FORTE'S: engine -will run at least: 180,000 miles. CHEVY CRUZE'S : engine will run at least : 89,000 miles then major engine problem's arise or transmission problems !
I get really tired of this whole "fun to drive factor" thing that pops up in so many car reviews. It's certainly a pretty piss poor reason to suggest leasing the Forte instead of buying it. The sad thing is somebody will watch this and actually think they shouldn't buy a Forte now, when there really is no reason to not buy one. It's a very good car.
If you never drove a Chevy Cruze than you should not comment . I thought it was just another cheap American car NOT SO ! I drove the 2013 LTZ I was shocked at what a fine car it is.
I bought a 2017 last August. Very nice car. But, it has the GM brand. If it was branded as a Toyota or Honda, it would be receiving glory beyond glory. WOW!! WHAT A CAR. GM can make it with gold inside and they'll complain. Sounds like brand brainwashing.
In the last 10 years KIA has brought the quality to a level that competes even with VW and Ford! Not to mention that i see them at the service only for oil-brakes change, despite the streets are flooded with them :) Now..,if you look at short term MPG,Chevy might be better buy,but you should check how much cost modern diesel maintenance like piezo injectors, fuel pumps (2000 bars) and the rest ..,then is the insurance and guarantee from KIA,which is unbeatable :)
My 2014 goes to 60(100km/h) in 8 seconds flat which is plenty fast for a non-fast car. Best part is the 6 speed trans.....a lot of gears to properly use the torque available. Way better than an ancient 3spd auto lol
The biggest issue is that in city driving DPF doesn't have enough time to burn itself (DPF catches and stores particulates and needs to burn them once in about 350-400 miles) properly and that clogs the flow. Your dealer can induce the burn through service computer but sometimes it doesn't help and you have to replace the filter (wchich is quite expensive). But it's not as bad as it sounds, carmakers are working on it for a few years now and it really got better recently.
Those if you who think the diesel dpf is problematic, it's not, I called the dealership, the Cruze automatically regenerates the DPF without notification as long as you drive above 30 mph or 50 km/h for 15 minutes non stop, so don't panic.
Modern diesels have many sensors inside that check many parameters and based on them engine controller can modify injection parameters. Even if temperature varies slightly (mostly during winter) the engine never gets cold and incomplete fuel burn is not a problem in modern diesels. DPF clogging during city driving (for more than 400-500 miles in a row) is real issue.
Idling causes slight drop of overall temperature but inside combustion chambers temperature is the same because heat is generated during compression stroke. Maybe Cummins diesels are very delicate, I have a modern Common Rail diesel and temperature drops only slightly and only in winter. I've never heard that idling caused problems in any EU diesel.
TFL, what is your view/understanding on why the Cruze Turbo Diesel was so slow at one mile above sea level (vs others have clocked it at sub 9 seconds at sea level)? My understanding (although I do not claim any expertise), is that the fact it is a turbo will remove most of the atmospheric pressure dependency for performance.
seems that very few testers take into consideration that diesel costs more than super premium in some locations. factoring the $ difference will reduce the mpg diesel advantage.
One aspect that I would like you guys to put in your reviews, is how noisy it is in the cabins! This is a major concern for me and will impact on my choices, thanks!
The fact that the Cruze is not undergoing massive styling changes every year is a positive. Part of the reason that Japanese vehicles have been so successful in the past is that the design was on a four year cycle, vs most American cars changed dramatically every year. This is enticing to the buyer because you know that your car will not be out-of-date styling-wise soon, and also this design practise allows the resale value to be much higher..
A little FYI, If you press and hold the traction control button until both lights come, It does change the performance of the car. Hmm Maybe you guys should try it.
The DSG is a real winner. The Passat TDI got 9 seconds 0-60 in TFLs' tests and it has the same engine as the Jetta AND its heavier. I'm pretty sure the Jetta would be high 8 seconds if the passat is low 9's.
Now is it worth it to spend more on a diesel cruze over the turbo one? Regular gas is $3.30, premium is around $3.70, diesel is still $4.00. So you are spending more at the pump and for the vehicle just to get a few more mpgs?
Well the diesel gets a few hundred more miles than a gas engine. Let's say an extra 150 mile advantage over a regular gas engine which lets say gets 400 miles a tank. Assuming they go 15,000 miles a year, the diesel will need to fill up about 70% less (27:37) and lets say they both have a 12 gallon tank, in a year the gas engine will rack up $1465 on regular, and the diesel $1296, you saved $169! Hooray!
Anthony Bonanni Yep. The math has already been done by some auto critics. Because the Cruz Diesel costs thousands more than the regular one and diesel fuel costs more, it'd take you something stupid like 100yrs to just break even on cost from buying a Cruz Diesel. It's really dumb. So basically, everyone who buys a Cruz Diesel is going to lose their ass when they sell or trade it in.
Not only that, they can be more expensive in gas! If you get 20% more efficiency with a fuel price increase of around 25%, it is be more expensive to fuel.
Woah people..calmness..and a little rationality. I havent drove the Cruz TDI yet...but I have driven the 2014 forte. It's not a bad little car at all. Seriously. Now the engine and handling didnt surprise me any , but the interior did almost everything right. I think KIA's past is still haunting some people perception. There are better cars out there for sure, but not for the cost. The 1.6 turbo cruze was a pretty peppy drive. I liked it as well.
Yes, Cruse Diesel is rated at 46 mpg hwy. Theoretically you can get close to that in real life. It has similar real world numbers to less powerful but faster Jetta TDI.
The reason for the higher price is because the car companies let Roman and Nathan drive the top-of-the-line models for each car. And technically, even the base model of these cars are not entry level. Chevy has two cars (Spark and Sonic) that are below the Cruze and Kia has the Soul and the Rio. Those four cars are just above the $13k price point.
I have owned a Volkswagen Golf TDI since I was 16, I'm 22 now, and it hasn't had any of those problems, I get 43 MPG in the city, and I have 260K on it.
not only do you have to get used to putting diesel in the cruze, but also DEF which is something the German competition does not need and just adds to the already high cost of diesel
I lived through Sandy's long gas lines. Folks with diesels laughed at us standing in line for our ration of gas while they filled up. The next ride's a oil burner.
I strongly recommend you get your fact straight next time. You rated the Diesel as 24mpg city, 36mpg highway. EPA ratings for the Cruze Diesel are 27 city and 46 highway. Nice try. Heck, even the 1.4L Turbo Cruze is rated for 26 city and 38 highway. You took the numbers from the 1.8L Cruze, which has the lowest fuel economy. Try again.

I had (and still have) a car with diesel engine and I've never had such problems. I've never heard of anyone having problems with it and here in Europe over 50% of cars are diesels. I think most people even during city driving don't even get close for "idling too long".
Hey I really love your reviews! I was wandering if you would review the 2014 chevy cruze 6 speed manual? I'm thinking about buying one and I wanted to know if the manual is a little faster than the automatic! Thanks!
That's what they're supposed to do, but they don't always work correctly. Most people in the trucking industry absolutely hate the emissions control systems. The cost of being compliant has literally put some in the industry out of business ,or it has forced them into a new path. I don't think particulate filters are problematic, I know they are. Calling a dealership for information about car problems is naïve. It's just like calling a cigarette company for information about cancer prevention.
Just saying that the 2014 Mazda 3 has close to the best MPG in this class, is quicker than most cars in the class, is competitively priced, has the best exterior and interior styling, some of the best features, best ride and handling and is above the industry standard in reliability. Hence me saying that there is no better choice in this class.
Indeed they are in :) I just check them and have to say that i value my life and i go with KIA,since the airbags are much more effective and better positioned than in Chevy! Chevy got its door almost apart from the car body!! Everyone here can check the tests!
Is that US miles per gallon? My TDI is not new, it had 42,000 miles when I sold it. I also have the same driving habits with all my cars. That's what real-world mileage is to me. It's something you never have to think about, you just drive it like you normally would.
it WAS combined mpg "I could drive without the visual aids (41.7 combined mpg was the result, bettering the EPA's 34.4 mpg)". Motortrend did not test for mpg in the 3. The 2012 Mazda 3 obtained 34.4 miles to the gallon on average, they only got 41.63 (and yes I know .07 mpg is non-existant and literally makes no difference) and both cars are priced similarly when the Mazda is as well equipped as the Jetta. The worst the Jetta got combined was 41.3 in traffic.
I see old lady's buying the Cruise. I like the new Forte but only with the wheels shown in this video. To bad it don't have any if the real safety features offered. Dynamic Cruise, cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, keep lane assist, braking assist, automated BJ assist.
Trust me, they didn't launch that Forte right either. Granted, they are a mile above see level but I have seen high 7s in those cars. It does have a lot of extra feature too weighing it down.
Hey tfl I watch a lot of your videos a good idea when you do 0-60 runs is show a list of comparable cars with similar 0-60 times at the end, would show were the car really stands in market! Just an idea
Honestly if I wanted a car that I could just throw away and replace in 6 months I would get the KIA. Although if I wanted a car that is reliable and dependable that I could stick with for a long time I would definitely get the Cruze.
I'm not sure this is the best match up you could've done. You're comparing the 2104 Forte which was JUST redesigned for that year, to the 2014 Cruze which has been the same body style and same interior since it came out for the 2011 model year. The only difference being the MyLink and the 2.0TD engine. Compare the 2013 models are wait for the Cruze to be redesigned in a couple of years.
The Chevy is definitely, in my opinion, a great car. It's only 4k more, better MPG, gets more than 46 Highway in the real world, it's better equipped, and let's be fair here, the Kia had 173 Hp, the chevy had just 151 HP. The DPF in the car I'm not sure about, but I've heard some promising things about modern DPF's, honestly I'd go for the Chevy.
You guys should do the 0-60 with a new car and an older generation... i've always wanted to know how the civic 98 does... never really could do the test in here cuz there's too much cars everywhere... but anyways just a suggestion, thanks for the videos!
In 99% of cases, diesel engines will get better fuel economy than the EPA states. I use to drive a 2006 Golf GLS TDI Manual and got 49 MPG combined, I've checked Edmunds, Motorweek, and Greencar.
So, you were doing something wrong. You're suppose to drive on the highway, or at least 50 miles an hour, every 400 miles or so, for about 20 minutes to regenerate, if it regenerates frequently, either you do drive like Danika, or you need to have your DPF checked, also, get a DPF delete or choose not DPF (such as Urea or Bluetec) if you don't want to run into these kind of issues.
I've driven, owned and repaired several diesel engines with more than 1.5 millions miles. In fact, I have more years of experience with diesel engines than the years of life you've had on this earth. I think you have a long way to go before you can start schooling me.
i completely disagree with your statement, in my 2013 passat tdi dsg with 14000 km i have been able to avg 40-42mpg nearly every tank. on the highway i can get 50+ easy. the key is to use the cruise control. wait till my motor breaks in more
No, you're clearly making assumptions. What do you think I was doing wrong? I was getting roughly the EPA estimates. I'd say I was probably doing something right.
Diesels are just fun to drive, but GUYS, You just shot down my Chevy Cruze Diesel taxi idea when U said there is no back seat room! I guess the Jetta Diesel is the best. Will U be doing a video review of the Mazda 6 diesel?
No, you're just being ridiculous now. I didn't need to drive recklessly to get my mileage. I found the short drives had the biggest impact on mileage. Diesels get poor mileage when cold because they tend to take longer to reach full operating temperatures. Short drives also reduced the time between regeneration. My mileage was a heavy mix of short and long trips. I gave the DPF many opportunities to heat up and blow out, but city driving was often unavoidable for me.
In Europe DPF causes some problems when you constantly drive in the city, it's much less problematic on highways (where most Americans drive). Skyactiv-D has another problem - it's not economical. Real world fuel consumption is similar to 2.0l 165hp gasoline Skyactiv-G. About TDI - go for fuelly.com - Jetta TDI averages 5-8 mpg more than gasoline Cruze/Focus/Forte, 2013 Passat is even better!
The US spec Passat is not rated anywhere near 55 mpg. You might get that with careful driving, but you could do the same with the Cruze. The current crop of TDI VWs really suffer under US emissions requirements.
Y'know ... all these people bashing on these cars because they have "better" cars ... makes me wonder ... Why the hell are you watching this anyway ?
i guess I'm kind of randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
We fear that's not correct. A turbo can help compensate for the lack of air density but it does not negate the fact that the air has less density when it first enters the engine. While a turbo will force more air into the combustion chamber it will not increase the air density to sea level density.

Yes, but they get to tell that story much more often.
The EPA rates it at 33 mpg combined 27 mpg city, 46 mpg highway - like I said.
if the traction control is off the rev limiter goes up to 4 grand
So, you were doing something wrong. You're suppose to drive on the highway, or at least 50 miles an hour, every 400 miles or so, for about 20 minutes to regenerate, if it regenerates frequently, either you do drive like Danika, or you need to have your DPF checked, also, get a DPF delete or choose not DPF (such as Urea or Bluetec) if you don't want to run into these kind of issues.
I've driven, owned and repaired several diesel engines with more than 1.5 millions miles. In fact, I have more years of experience with diesel engines than the years of life you've had on this earth. I think you have a long way to go before you can start schooling me.
i completely disagree with your statement, in my 2013 passat tdi dsg with 14000 km i have been able to avg 40-42mpg nearly every tank. on the highway i can get 50+ easy. the key is to use the cruise control. wait till my motor breaks in more
I demand a manual transmission for the cruze! On the specs it shows the diesel cruze gets 8.6 secs to 60 mph.
In Europe almost every car in every segment has a diesel version, diesels being more popular.
Why go for either of these when the Jetta is still sitting there being totally reliable and fuel efficient?
I gave the DPF many opportunities to heat up and blow out, but city driving was often unavoidable for me.
compare the Cruze diesel to the Jetta TDI! the cruze diesel is nice but i think VW's DSG shifts better.
How do you justify $25,000 for a kia?
Btw new cruzes are rpm locked for break in like vw's for the first 1000 miles, the car is way faster after...
The US spec Passat is not rated anywhere near 55 mpg. You might get that with careful driving, but you could do the same with the Cruze. The current crop of TDI VWs really suffer under US emissions requirements.
