Here's my step by step: thecarpentersdaughter.co.uk/renovations/garage-conversion-diy-to-en-suite/
Love this.....fantastic job. Sadly my Dad is no longer with us but this reminds me of the help and advice he gave me, doing up my first flat. Have taken his ideas with me as I have upgraded property to property. Thank you for this video brings back happy memories but is also really inspiring - I also have a garage to renovate! X
Great job I love standing back at the end of each stage of the job and thinking that looks great . From the timber work too the insulation plaster boarding etc . Well done
I remember helping my dad hang drywall on the ceiling as a kid. We would get it into position and then Dad would say, "Do you got it?"
"Yeah" I would grunt.
"You sure?"
I'd nod vigorously.
Then he'd let go and here is my skinny 12 year old butt, arms shaking, barely holding this 4 x 8 sheet to the ceiling.
"Now where did I put that hammer?" as he'd rummage around.
He denies it, but I still think he did it on purpose.
Haha, it's such a pain in the arse 😂 Loved my Mum's sweeping brush stick 👌😂
That's great , but very old school. These days we use a wall board lifter . So easy , can fix sheets with one person .🙄
@@johnmcdonald8298 so the one and only time I've ever dry walled a ceiling I used a plasterers hawk on the end of a painter's pole balanced on a 3 step stool! Lol worked well actually
when he lets go you just accept your fate and a whole new pain will power u never knew you had comes out lol
Lovely job and it's always so satisfying when it comes together like that! Putting plasterboard on ceilings is always a pain but thought I'd mention that you can buy/hire lightweight props (easily adjustable) to hold them up.
Thank you! I did not know that! If I ever have to do this on my own or just two of us, I'll look into them :)
I've been looking for a video like this for ages to see what is involved in converting a garage. Thanks
I just did a similar thing with my grandfather, when you were cutting the insulation, all I could hear in my head was "Stroke the saw!". Good job!
Great job Vikki. You will remember these days.
Thanks and yes, I think so too 😊
I am in midst of fitting windows. Your video has been helpful!
Did you by chance make any educational video about that ? as would be very useful to see it. Thanks
you are amazing. Love your voice and clear commentary, explaining everything in detail.
Amazing, wish i was in your boots. Working and learning from your father.
I wish I started learning off him more than 10 years ago... got a lot of catching up to do 😂
Great job as usual. Our eldest daughters bedroom was the garage, it’s had nothing like your insulation measures fitted! The original roof is now in the ceiling...we’re knocking it down so no point in fixing it.
Thank you. My parents did the same with my brother's bedroom years ago too :)
Top job and cool video. Thanks for the narration, explained it well!
Cheers :)
Hi great vids thank you very much stay safe and godbless you and all your people Carl in london x
Nice progress! It's coming along nicely. Stay healthy!
Thanks, Mike :) I can't wait to see how great everything looks 😍
Oh nice, I can see where the screw helps to screw into the brick without using wall plugs
Looking marvellous well done all
Thanks 😊
8:30 I did that on my own on 11ft ceiling, most swear words I ever came out with in a day!
Lol... that would be me too then 😂😂😂
Very good tidy job 👍
Thanks :)
Looking awesome may I say. I'm looking to build an office on the foundations I put down. Looking on your video has inspired me to do the lot myself. Cheers 🤘😎
Great to hear it and good luck :)
Good progress hun looking forward to seeing the finished product 😊😊😊
Cheers and me too :)
I think I'm a diy pro just changing sink taps and there you all are fitting a whole new bathroom 😂 it's all coming along nicely can't wait to see the finish 🖒
Lol, well it wasn't that long ago really when I fitted taps for the first time :)
You make it look so easy!!
Great job, you're doing a hellava job remodeling,,
Thank you. It helps having a teacher 😊
Looking good..... and the Garage conversion isn't bad either 😍
😂👌
EE’s a saucy bugger
Wow, great job!
Thank you: :)
Looking good! Very rewarding isn’t it?
Yes, absolutely! Looking forward to learning more 🤗
Looking good well done 👍👍
Thanks :)
I didn't notice any plastic membrane behind plasterboard. Regs say it should be there. Unless its vapour barrier plasterboard that was used.
We were all nearly exposed to a bit of ‘builders crack’ in this episode.🤣
Hahah... I'm hoping I edited them all out. Point to anyone who finds one 😂😂
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6.35 do I get a point haha
Maaaaaybe it is?... lol
🍰
The Carpenter's Daughter edit them out and I’m unsubscribing😄😄😄🥰👍
Thats a fantastic job vikki. I had no idea about that type of insulation.
Can i ask what the screws are called that go straight into the masonary without the need for rawl plugs.
The only thing i would have done different is use copper pipe instead of plastic.but its an age thing.i was 60 a couple of days ago and when i did my apprenticeship i would have got a smack round the ear if the pipes weren't level. everything is for quickness these days.
Lol about the smack round the ear 😂 I do love push fit plumbing for us home DIYers 😊 Also, the screws are called Spax screws, but if you search masonry screws, you should find them. We love them! Their threads have spikes on them compared to normal screws.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK thank you for your reply vikki.keep up the good work
Thanks! And any time :)
@@bluecurlygirl Hi Emer.
I havn't heard about copper not being allowed anymore but it wouldnt suprise me and i would be intrested if you ever find out if its true.
I would never dream of buying a new build most components used are cheap rubbish.
I guy i work with had 3 boilers in 10 years whereas a good potterton will last many years.
@@TexLfc I dreamed it obviously! It's fine. I'm removing the original post to save any confusion!! Sorry if I panicked anyone there.
Amazing! Just what I needed. What happened to the floor? It looked like you were laying PIR down but there were no batons; how and what did you fix the floor to?
That entrance with plastered walls gives me dread... All that painting to do! 😂
Great video, what’s on the other side of the block work? Is it an external wall?
Looks brill 👍👍👍🏴
Thanks! :)
My Father converted a One Car Garage into a Studio Apartment and added an Ensuite Bathroom and I lived in it for Quarter of a Century. Today I live in a Two Bedroom Cottage and frequently miss My old One Car Garage.
very insightful video.
wish I'd learned this stuff as it's very useful.
Very helpful
Brilliant job. I love building work 😀 that would have been good seein you put the screw in with no battery haha your dad is a cracking builder and a good teacher for your. Brilliant 👌👌
Haha... had to leave that silly mistake in 😂😂
Nice work 👍
Thanks :)
Hello Vikki, you know the insulation would you join them to the wood or each other with Silver insulation tape?
That looked like FUN! ....... Next time you tack a ceiling you need to grab some spare batton and make yourself a couple of T-props - Your arms will thank you - No more struggling :-)
Thanks for the tip! Yes, it was a cool project to do 😊
Daddy must be proud.. leave you to your own resources building own property portfolio🏘
How much of the work did you end up doing yourself, saving you money?
Learning lots from your vids, not that I get to use it of course, but still good to learn.
Myself included, lots wouldn't think of doing it ourselves, other than painting etc.
Having seen some rennovations done by builders, I can see similarities to what you do so makes me think i should give it a go for experience 😁. Only thing I don't have is a dad who has experience to help give advice 😔
Great job I love it
Coming along nicely. And dad is right, you need a battery... hahaha
😂😂😂
Hi, hope is well, I struggled with the plasterboard ceiling also had to make dead legs. Noticed you used moisture resistant chipboard, did you tile straight onto it can i ask?
Gettin there !!!.
💪😂
YEA!
Impact driver is much better than a combi drill when it comes to screwing
Depends what it is :) Although I think we did use the electrician's on this from time to time!
Your right but sometimes it can be too powerful and go all the way through the plasterboard
@@Aliefizz If youre new with one yes, for plasterboard use a plasterboard gun
Good work 😃😃
Cheers :)
I love all of your videos. They are all truly amazing! :-)
You are getting more and more confident, with more skills, give it 6 months and you will be building your own house from scratch.
Thanks. That is a lovely thought!
You ever seen airless plaster ?? Would speed your job up 10 times. Do you do this type of project often ?
Why didn’t you use wooden joist for the floor support will insulation won’t get crushed
It's coming along great. Did you partition off the loo? Good idea if so. What size is the room if you don't mind me asking? My bathroom layout is just so wasteful. It's a rental and so we can't change it. Drives me NUTS! No storage and no room to add it. If it were configured differently it could be so much more.
Yes, the loo is partioned off at the back. It will be near the small window. I'll have to measure the size of the room and get back to you.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Oh gosh don't do that. I was only wondering for rough estimate not exact. I can't change anything here so won't matter to me. I find it hard to get my head around spaces when they're bare. I can't visualise the size at that stage. The rooms don't look right to me until they're plastered I think.. Dont' be putting work on yourself girl. You've waaAy more than enough to handle at the minute. It's a great idea to keep it separate. Nothing to disturb the view while soaking in the tub!
Lol... just think the width of a standard garage, but we stole a 3rd of it. Then within that small space, 1/3 is the en suite, 2/3 is the walk in wardrobe area.
These things can cause a lot of stress
Brilliant
Just wondering, the brick protrusion in your wall, did you insulate around it or on top of it too? I have 6 of them down the length of my garage, 3 either side and its a proving problematic
My Dad must've added insulation to those from looking in the video as I don't remember doing those at all.
He'll have either used a slimmer insulation or shaved some off the back.
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Brilliant, thank you for your help!
Did you get building control to sign this off and get the certificate for selling. As some others have stated you haven't followed regs ? But it looks good.
It's been funny reading comments how people think it doesn't meet regs because the building inspector visited regularly, directing my Dad through the stages.
And yes, it got signed off.
You need to do hoodies with your arse on it...more recognisable than Hann’s paw print..!
Lol... maybe it should come with a slogan "you're not working hard until your bum sticks out" 😂
Hi, looking good! I’m interested in the DPC round the window reveal: I can’t quite see on the video where this needed to be fitted. Did you fix it flat against the wall and just on to the PVC frame?
Can't see why that is required. Logically it makes no sense so if any can show the regulation that requires it. If anything you are creating a bridge for moisture outside to run indside. Dampproof course is to prevent damp from the ground drawing up
Hi - What size timbers are required to pass building regs? and what insulation is needed for building regs? Thanks
Looking really good, is the ceiling also the roof? If so, did building control say anything about installing a vapour barrier?
Cheers. No, my Dad put a new roof on in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/cJGJOc_AigQ/v-deo.html
Hi great vids, may i ask how springy was the floor?
It wasn't springy at all from what I remember when we lived there.
why did you use structural timber rather than C16 like you did for the stud wall in the other video?
Any chance I can email you about this video vikkie? I have a couple of questions!
What about screeding on top of the insulation or building a frame on the ground and insulating? Won't there be movement on that chipboard
Not sure what's going on the flooring... that's the next lesson to learn :)
Depends how flat and well the insulation went in...if its nice and tight and not rocking it will be fine thats the idea of a floating floor....maybe joisted out would have been better then insulated in-between don't think screed would have worked it looked to tight for height.
Always use couple of made up dead men for holding up the plasterboard makes it easier if on your own like for the ceiling. Where's the bog going then in that little section at the end as saw no waste pipe 😉👍
Love that idea! The waste pipe hole has been cut since for the toilet. It's just behind the left side of the partition wall 👌
Great job Vicky. You really should be wearing a mask when cutting/fitting the insulation though, Nasty stuff 😷
Ah, thank you. I realised an eye mask was important when fitting in the windows. It feels irritating!!
Miss you 😘😘
Wait a minute...is that ceiling insulation right?!?
I love a good garage conversion. Glad you're happy with the results (so far). :)
We just added bits here and there as well be adding a lot above now my Dad has added a pitched roof above over Christmas.
Proper bird xx
😂
👍
Thanks! :)
No breather membrane??
Watched the whole video waiting for the builders crack =(
I did a good job at editing them all out then? 😉 Trust me, there were MANY occasions 😂😂
God I love carpenters daughter .miss sexy bottom 🥰🥰🥰 so missed your channel .so clever.i have the Stanley drill so impressed with it even 2ah battery does a fair few screws before recharge and you get two so does the job no doubt about that .keep up the great work !
have you finished your house yet?
wear gloves when handling that type of insulation as the foil backing edges are like a razor DAMHIKT
Thanks! Never noticed :)
Fab.......you.......las
👍
We want to build tree house to kiss you in it
are you still together he don't seem to do much lmao
