    I personally have a JV-2080. I bought a few years ago for only $200 US. I have a few cards loaded in it that I also got for dirt cheap. I have the World, Asia, Vintage Synths, Keyboards of the 60s & 70s, Special FX, Orchestral and Techno. This is an awesome synth with these cards. I plan to pick up a JV-1080 to join my 2080. This was a great video. I learned alot more abouth this synth. Thanks for your video. 👍👍👍👍👍

    After 10 years of not using it (or only using it for "show and tell" for my university students), I decided to bring it back to my studio. Just plugged it in today. It still sounds great!! I'm excited about using it again in upcoming compositions. I have to try the editor.

      Same, it may sound silly but I'm so grateful to have been born during the era of the synth. So many great sounds and songs from those things. Modern garbage simply cannot compare.

      @@BristecomI mean, sample libraries are much more detailed. The issue is, I think they are too detailed. The reality is, next to no composer has the time to spend hours and hours perfectly configuring articulations, drawing in realistic expression, bow changes and stuff on strings. Problem is, when you don't, any corner you cut is painfully obvious. The JV/XV synths sound beautiful out of the box and can be adjusted to measure, definitely easier on the XV-5080 as it has a much larger display than the JV-1080. The sounds are very musical, that's something most modern libraries lack... musicality.
      Considering most musicians will easily be able to tell a VST performance apart from a real performance, it seems silly to me now spending so much on these libraries which never will be a real orchestra and each year a new version comes out and everyone rushes to buy it. I'm pretty much limiting myself to my existing libraries for percussion and whatnot but just going to exclusively use my XV-5080, MS-20 to make some new music.
      At least for mock ups I can achieve what I want quickly and then if I really wanted it ti sound better I could spend a few weeks mixing some better modern libraries to perfection but, as said, most musicians will still be able to tell it's not real so I struggle to see the benefit anymore.

    Each Patch essentially has 4 Oscillators, 4 Filters, and at least 12 Envelopes.
    Each Patch is as deep (or more) as a JD-800. Really deep voice architecture.
    I just downloaded the 64-bit VST version combined with the stand alone app/editor.
    Should be able to automate my XP-3080 from it in my DAW as well.
    Add in support for the SR-JV80 expansion cards. This looks kick-ass!

      The JD-800 looks good, that is it. But is barely better than a Roland D-5. Is so limited, you can not sync LFOs to midi, it does not transmit/ receive CC control. I have it just because it looks good but is only 4 parts as well. Whatever it does, anything can do it better.

Great unit though. I use it, along with some other classic digital rack synths, with my MMT-8 hardware sequencers (2 of them). I don't use a DAW. Glad to have discovered your channel and I appreciate this discussion. Since late 2018 I have been slowly building my studio, including constructing my own customized desk. Back in 1987 I began buying numerous rack mounted synthesizers, along with a Roland 300 keyboard controller and a Yamaha DX-7. Even though my current studio setup is all digital software based, at some point I will integrate my rack mount units in the development of sound development and the creation of music. I wouldn't consider the Fantom-XR to be a successer. It's infact a completely different set of sounds. There's maybe only 2 percent of XV sounds in there. The Integra-7 is actually the successer that has that has the JV/XV engine. I own both the Fantom-XR and Integra-7. There are many sounds in the Fantom-XR that I still use that aren't in the Integra-7. The Integra-7 is really a re-issued XV-5080 module.

    I enjoy the 1080 today. I use it often. No commentary on it sounding old or outdated. I’ll often soften some sounds by layering a basic big analog type pad behind it. Analog Soft pad (korg wavestation) namely. I’ll take the patch heavenals or d50 stack, assign their velocity minimum to 75 and put either of them behind a piano. This way the harder notes have a bell like accent, almost like a sparkle. I also like to use strings with this. I also use the mentioned wavestation, the xv5080, d50 and jd800.

    Hi I have watched this presentation a couple of times now and also your review of the Proteus 2000 . I became a little bit inspired really so thanks for that 👏👏......I have been routing through the crates in my attic , a virtual Aladdins cave of curated musical technology (and several miles of wires) dating from 1982 to about 10 years ago. So far I have excavated my JV 8080, the original Proteus , the Proteus 2000 and the Akai s1100 sampler (18 mb 🧐). I also retrieved both versions of the enigmatic Dark Star Synthesizer and a Korg M1R rack mount .
    So far the JV has convinced me to find a place for it in my current studio space ..like wise temporarily the S1100 so I can review the boxes and boxes of samples...I may keep it as a studio ornament.
    I’m currently studying how to create and script libraries in Kontakt and it appeals me to borrow from the JV and perhaps some of the other long forgotten instruments from the attic. If the Kontakt collection is any good I will submit it to Pianobook and also attempt Decent sampler and Exs24 versions.
    The plan is to now to clear the attic by Xmas ...any working items I don’t want, I will sell in an online auction and donate the takings to the artists charity supported through Piano book.

I must admit i do find the external midi integration in Logic very clunky compared to something like Sonar formely cakewalk, which makes external midi so easy to work with particularly when wanting to switch a midi track from a software instrument to external unless I am missing a trick?

    I went with the most modern interpretation of the Roland rack mount synth / sound module. The Integra-7. It has all the SRX cards built in plus Roland’s Super Natural engine. It’s not 100% accurate to the original 1080 but it’s close enough to get the job done. The 1080 was and still is a milestone instrument.

    I have the slightly older JV-80 and it sounds very well. It has room for only a single expansion board (I have the 01 Pop board, but the 04 vintage synths would be a nice upgrade). The synth engine is really deep, but not as convenient to program without editor software. My biggest gripe is that there is only a single stereo out, so proper multi-track recording has to be done one track at a time, so you might as well remain in patch mode.

    I have a JV-1080 and the performance mode gets overwhelmed with very few midi messages (with Logic). It’s Omnisphere in a box. I find I’m using it more these days than my Super Jupiter and Super JX modules (edit: and Komplete 13 CE).. Funnily enough the 04 vintage synths expansion goes for about the same price as the synth itself these days. I think it’s aged better than the far more expensive JD-990. Haven’t been able to try JV-XP Editor yet as I wasn’t aware it existed until now, but the page isn’t working currently. Same link you have here and on gearspace. The Don Solaris patches are pretty good too.

    • @eman0828
      @eman0828 Рік тому

      I lot of the Omnisphere sounds came from quite a bit of Roland vintage hardware esp the JD-990 as the building block. I think the Integra-7 is more closer to the Omnisphere equivalent given that its still in production today. It combines most of all of Roland's history in one sound module. It has every sound of the JV/XV series plus all 12 SRX Expansion sounds onboard, plus the modern Super Natural Jupiter 80 sounds, and many patches from the Jupiter and JD-990. That's over 6000 sounds in one box!

  • @eman0828

    The Roland JV-1080 and JV-2080 was the staple sound module of 90s R&B records from Brandy & Monica - The Boy is Mine hence the Harp patch, to Dru Hill, to Whitney Houston, to Mariah Carey to Destiny Child and so on. I own the the Roland Integra-7 the successor of the JV-1080, JV-2080 and XV-5080. In fact it has every sound of all of those modules combined including some sounds form the JD-990. Its basically a modern XX-5080 plus Jupiter 80 in one rack mount unit. It was once that the JV-1080 was the longest running synth in Roland's history that sold millions and millions of those units for over 7 years in production literally in every studio around the world. Now the Integra-7 takes the lead as the longest running synthesizer sound module in Roland's history that's still in production today that came out in 2012.

    I love to add these add these old digi sounds (I still love my Korg M1) from their 14 -16 converters behind the pristine multi-sampled 144k orchestral sets. The crap converters and highly compressed sound sets add a quite bit - in the case of the M1 - to the low end. Is better because it is worse!
    I nearly broke into a sweat when you started patch editing DX7 style. I have been on a crusade to (and by crusade I mean screaming at my computer) to get Apple to at least ass the very rudimentary bank and patch selection the MIDI track already has. Pretty much every Roland PCM-based synth engine since the LA-synthesis of the D-50 is set up in the same general way - Each "tone" is effectively its own synth, with patches being created by layering the different tones. That's the part where a lot of people get confused with Roland synths in general - thinking they are programming a "single" synth when creating a patch, when they are really programming several at the same time. Once you get your head around that it can really unlock the power of these synths, even the earlier models like the JV or D-Series.

  • @l92910
    @l92910 3 роки тому +16

    I love my 1080, still very relevant today. Worth noting that you were saying patch instead of tone, each patch is made up of four tones. For each tone, you’ve got two lfo’s and three envelopes. That’s a total of 8 lfo’s and 12 envelopes. The only way to get that many on an analog synth would be a modular one but it would be huge, would cost so much and would only be monophonic, and no sample based sounds. so the JV really is super - super versatile and powerful

As for controlling channels, I’m not entirely sure what you mean there.

I want to have buttons for each channel on screen and set it as the midi out of the piano, without having to ⏭ the whole time on piano. But luckily after being nerd enough i found a way to set channels directly using 5 buttons of the roland itself, the hack was to save as registration. So i press now directly the channel i want, and this is so important for engraving on logic pro and also arranging. But i want a plug in that triggers all the 16 channels via key command, for i can send it to stream deck. So i press the channel i want directly, without having to click or skip too much. I wonder why not every composer requires this from developers.The Arturia midi controler has a good functionality to change channels quickly but not that perfect still, why not put the buttons of each channels there… And more: ideally i would like to duplicate and send one note for two or more channels, pressing buttons simultaneously. It is basically the work of a mute/solo on mixer, but for channels…. Midi interface i dont have, just audio. There is this thing on midi environment , the multi output instrument, where we can click direct on channel, but i don’t now how to make sense from it and change channels on hardware.
