Using a Roland JV1080 for Modern Media Composition?

Using a Roland JV1080 for Modern Media Composition?
Fix the effect chain issue, get a JV-2080!
12:30 I use the Roland Cloud JV-1080 vst much more than the real hardware because i can use as many of them i like in a project and automate everything.
Dope
Great video! Thank you so much
Thanks for watching!
Great review Stephen, it prompted me to buy one.
this looks like hankley common
may i ask how you isolated the sounds by just highlighting the frequencies? I tried doing that but it's playing the whole audio
If you use the play button with the dashed box around it then it will play just the selected area(s) of the audio.
Producers make the mistake of wanting the patch sound to sound like a finished product. The magic of the JV-1080 is the compression needed to fit the sounds onto rom. The sounds are so clean you can tweak them to your heart's desire. I love legacy hardware.
I thought i saw at least two (if not three) original ultra-rare Neumann M50's over the conductor's podium, No words about them?
They have an amazing mic cupboard at AIR!
Wwooww awesome place brother good going ❤👍 ware is it located??
AIR Lyndhurst is near Hampstead Heath in London
Thank you! Very intressting demo.
Glad you liked it!
Hi, what modular effect is that?
It’s a clone of Mutable Instruments Clouds - a granular synth/effect
@@StephenTallamyMusic Thanks
I have a valid license and cannot load new samples and instruments. It is Friday and I was planning to work on music, but MUSIO is dead. Interestingly, the samples I have already loaded (in the past) work fine. IT seems like the recent update screwed everything up. .I was asked today to reset my password (for no reason) and install an update (which most likely caused all the issues). Reported the problem and waiting, but It really sucks to use such an unreliable service
Just beautiful .... ♥
Thank you!
The editor though don't you have to compile it for it work ?
what kind of controller do you use to controll expressiona nd dynamics? looking for one
For a long time I was using PalleteGear which got superseded by Monogram. I’ve recently switched to using FVDE by Audio Imperia which has longer faders (you can see it in my latest video). I’ve also used the Korg nanokontrol which is a budget option that works well enough although it has quite short faders
FM Brass is the best!
Nice one. Happy with my Proteus 2000. Also have a Kurzweil K2500 which sounds really swish.
i have too, when i compare to plugins.... the proteus sing!
Check out the Hypersynth 101 card. 👌
does air studio have air conditioning
It was actually a cold day when we visited! The main recording hall had electric heaters (which were quiet) but I can’t imagine they would have air conditioning whilst recording!
@@StephenTallamyMusic i just feels that it's a shame if such a special place lack air conditioning

Have fun!
Blows spitfire out of the water.
I do want to get the M1 LE plugin at some point, with not having an M1, do have a Krome Ex, don't suppose there is any way to add any M1 sounds into it?
Wish I could buy all those libraries, but 1-I'm still a starting composer, and 2- I live in Brazil, our budget reality is VERY different.
Looks and sounds wonderful... definitely on my wish-list!
Never had a DAW. MPC2000XL with 2x jv1080's fully maxed out with cards. I feel like Vangelis
🙏🏼
Hi guys, do you know how many banks is there on the M1R and how to navigate thru all of them ?
There’s only 100 presets on the M1R so there are no banks to manage at all. You can load new presets over sysex
I had a Korg X3 in 1994 and I was so happy to have that thing I was 17 .. lol
Can you control the hardware M1 with the VST one in real time?
Yes, it does. It even can simulate a D50, except the PWM. Nobody needed PWM after the 9ties anyway. What is it? a bit of wanky shift in sounds? Can be done by filters anyway.
Use a lot of spitfire stuff on my projects and need to evoke different composers' styles. this was hugely helpful!
i didnt realise logic was this powerful as far as sysex integration goes
Yeah, sadly they have buried it a bit in the last few years, but it’s really quite impressive
Thanks, now I'm more confused than before 😅😆
Thanks a lot Stephen for this review. I was about to buy one of these but I think I may have to hold off. I was looking for something with more usual instruments like piano / piano + strings / electric piano / warm lead tones / expansive pads, etc. I would say piano sound realism is a must for me. I was wondering which sound module do you recommend that has these good tones but they are sitting in the lowest zone of budget scale. Thanks a lot.
If you haven’t checked out the other sound modules videos on my channel (JV1080, M1R and Proteus) then that might be an avenue and all of them can be picked up reasonably cost effectively. But bear in mind they are all tech from the 80-90s and so compared to something new they will be a long way the level of realism we enjoy today. The thing is, the rack mount module seems to have died and so if you get something newer you are likely to be also paying the expense of a keybed etc. I really like the piano on my Roland FP80 (which I’m using as a controller in this video) and you can sometimes pick it up out one of it’s older relatives (e.g. FP-4) at not too bad a price but then you aren’t going to get a particularly wide range of sounds and you’ll need the space for it.
I have a jv1080…it was attached to a windows XP and always had a serious lag issues … I may drag it out and see if I can attach to a faster computer…
Its interesting to use korg ms-20 with that module
I love Preset 42 "Overture" . It's Amazing sound. You hear it a lot on Bruce Springsteen and Bruce Hornsby's older records.
The examples are only slow movements.
Yes. I choose long articulations for the comparison because some of the libraries don’t have short actuations (for example Olafur Arnold’s Evolutions).
@@StephenTallamyMusic I am new to string libraries/samples, and was looking for strings for Motown and 70s Disco and understood those are about short articulations. Looking for an affordable one I find most reviews and demos are about broad 'cinematic' layers and indeed many, certainly more affordable libraries only have a few articulations, not the ones needed for the genres I mentioned. There are some Spitfire libraries mentioned as suitable for those, however. Thank you for the reply.
@@fritsvanzanten3573 yes for that style you definitely want short articulations and probably would get a most of what you need out of ensemble patches as you probably don’t need to split out each section. Also you probably would want a dry sound. This rules out quite a lot of the Spitfire stuff because it’s recorded in large halls.
@@StephenTallamyMusic Thank you for thinking along Those are indeed the things I'm in the process of figuring out (and I don't want to buy something to find out afterward). It makes that most comparison videos don't apply, but you can't tell from the title (hence my slightly frustrated comment). Spitfire's Chambers Strings and Intimate Stings are mentioned though. Another aspect is that libraries also may consist of loops/complete phrases, which I don't prefer.
@@StephenTallamyMusic Slinky Strings would be a nice (LABS?) library😉
Content like this makes me feel better about AI; there is something transcendental about humans playing music.
Absolutely agree!
🎉
I ended up just grabbing the sysex dumps of TX81Z and loaded them into FM8.. voila, instant access to all the patches, especially the famous aforementioned bass patch. :) I love all the parameters in FM8, especially those built in effects.
WOW what a nice experience :)
It was incredible!
How do you link up the jv1080 to just the editor?
Gradually been expanding my EMU rack collection, leagues ahead of so many modern machines. They also just look gorgeous on a rack.
Oooh I would love to see a photo of that rack!
Hi, I have the JV1080 and the downloaded JV-XP Editor for Roland JV1080 I'm using Midiface 16x16!! But the editor keeps saying offline all the time and I cannot change the sound on JV1080 using the software. Any help would be great guys.
It sounded good in the 90s and I don't think it's sound quality decreased.
Subscribed! This is exactly the style of content I try to find and usually fail: A comparison of many libraries with nil to little bias and a simple quick example without the melodramatic descriptions and embellishments. Thank you- I learned a lot about the libraries I don’t have, mostly that I was right but a couple sing
Lovely! And a beautiful demonstration of the ‘limitation breeds creativity’ concept
Absolutely - often having too much choice can stifle creativity so it was fun to work within the constraints of only using Crow Hill samples.
