I've always had a soft spot for those Roland synths, from the JD-800 on. Splurged and got myself a JV-1010 off Reverb for Christmas and am having a blast plumbing the depths of the thing.
had the 800. somehow it was a great controller but the sound was a bit strange compared to the others.. it sounded pretty retro and distorted at times.. the 990 is more balanced and sounds less vintage and has more low end.. I do miss the controls though.. just for the filter and resonance control. the rest I couldn't care. programming the synths with editors gets you far better results. also the 800 waveforms were quite dull and too acoustic, I'm glad the 990 has this expansion with vintage waveforms. the 1080 is just very easy to blend... great for esoteric stuff and fx or vibes.. I found myself using it more than the 990... despite on paper it should sound more crap. still if you compare the vst of the 1080 to the real deal, the vst sounds like a flat tire. LOL. editing is easy on the front panel, not so on the 1080, 2080 is easier.
I love mine, bought it when it came down in price from around £1000 to about £400 in the 90's as my first synth module. I've expanded massively with my gear since but this still has a permanent place in the studio and is used a lot. Cracking piece of kit and also has some ooomf to it
I love this day and age. We have such a huge selection of really great music tools to pick from for reasonable prices. For those few select ones that have the inclination and dedication the JVs can bring life to any track and even bring fame ;)
3:58 With Time the VST will likely improve. Roland has released V2 versions of Jupiter 8, Juno 60, Juno 106, Jx-3p synths that have Circuit Mod knobs so you can scroll through plenty of slightly different tunings of the circuitry, and together with the Condition knob you can make them sound "more analog" than OG hardware or whatever you want out of them. So if or when there is a V2 of the JV-1080 it might have the improvements it needs.
Great video. I have a 1080, 5080, and 990. They all sound fantastic and I use them in my music quite often. I am going to buy some of your patches. Thanks.
I had the JD800 and still have the JD990 and then picked up the JV1080 to house the extra cards I had since the JD990 only had room for one (I put the Analog card in there). Anyway the JV1080 really blew me away, it really fits in everything I do. I struggle more to get the JD990 to fit in a mix and find I have to EQ it lot.
Great overview! I have re-bought the 1080 after selling it a long time ago. As your video shows, it is more than usable today if you're willing to program sounds or buy patch sets, which I'm not ashamed to say I've done. Your patches are great 😊
i like this synth for 2 big reasons: "every" parameter patch should be tone ready output for background and hi fi at the same time, which is kind of for film industry only rather
I put my JV away for a while just to concentrate on playing piano...but now its coming back out..had it for most of my life..theres no better synth..well maybe the jd990!. I noticed the sounds are from your wonderful soundset..I love those sounds
Yeah 990 is killer for a digital. No plugin sounds like it… but it’s intimidating and heavy compared to the jv. I feel the jv is more usable and less demanding in the mix as the jd’s. Easy blending
Actually the Session board piano is still usable by today's standards because that sound and many of the Roland SC-88 Pro's other sounds are based on SRJV expansion boards such as Session and Country.
maybe you can answer this: So it works that if CC numbers are assigned via the system via Control 1 and 2, any parameters can be controlled via ableton here. But the problem is that there are only two CCs that can be controlled. but here many different CCs should be assigned, with an editor from the internet this is also possible. however, no editor should be used, because that is just horror. the CCs should be assigned themselves and then drawn in via the Ableton MIDI clip. With the two CCs mentioned, that’s not an issue.
I love the 1080! It all sounds like nice ambient John Beltran sounds to me. Would probably only use it for atmosphere, pads and poly sounds like you have. I don't think I've ever heard it make convincing bass sounds
nah bass is not the power.. but why... really.. hahah it's like trying to drill through concrete wall with a pencil really. limitations are good.. omnisphere can do a lot more, also bass but why do i always loose myself in the options... meh
Thank you for the awesome video!! I was wondering actually, do you know much about the preset banks for the JV-2080? I've been trying to collect VSTs and samples that were used for video game composition, and there's specifically a sample within the JV-2080's Preset A (PR-A) bank I'm tryin to get my hands on! I know you've got some stuff on your website, but I wasn't sure if anything like that was included.
*REAL RAP... I am all for a JV2080 but my son do not sleep on a vst called DUNE 2 AND DUNE 3! they are really Amazing! And there are some older ones in 32bit like Octopus by LinPlug.*
Many people have no idea. For some reason Roland managed to make the 1080/2080 sound totally uninteresting, while these are very, very powerful synths!! I own 3x JD990 and 2x JV2080's beside many other synths. And to be honest, some sounds from those synths sound more analog than some of my real analogs !!
@@ConforceI’ve seen the website you reference that concerns SYSEX → .BIN but I don’t know if a tool available that does it the other way round. On that website, there is a similar concert or for the D50 I believe, and it states that’s bidirectional. But I think the JV / XV one is just one way?

There is zero reason to get the hardware, now that the VST version exists. It's literally the same architecture, code, presets in the VST version, except that THERE IS NO NEED FOR MENU DIVING on a small screen. Why on earth would you get the hardware?
because you have no clue what it sounds like. spend some time with it. it's coloring, dimension, paying a bit of attention to it will make you believe... at the same time.. i use both. the again, use what you prefer.. i don't like the interface of the plugin. it's a fucking nightmare and windows 95 style. i'd rather stick to the interface.
architecture isn't the same as coloring... yes it's a digital synth but what gives it just this little bit of extra character is exactly the conversion and bit of gaining etc etc.. arturia did exactly the same with the esq80 on a plugin.. does it sound the same ???? NO
and take note.. the software version DOES NOT BLEND IN my mixes... it just drowns... the hardware has a bit more presence in a total mix... learn and practice.
@@Conforce This is typical esoteric 'analog warmth' nonsense, except for a digital synth lmaooooo.
