let me guess you’ve played footy before? Congratulations 👏🏽 that’s irrelevant mate! It’s simple mate, players need to change their technique, even if the oncoming player slips or is slipping or falling, it doesn’t matter, don’t make contact to the head! and if you do you get punished for it. Rugby union has already adapted to this without impacting on the quality of the game, and the argument about it being a different code or game, well, people slip or are slipping or fall just before a tackle in union too but you don’t see contact to the head, and if you do it’s few and far between. I think we all know you cannot totally eradicate contact to the head, but your missing the point, it doesn’t matter whether intentional, unintentional, or accidental, It’s about breaking the old culture of contact to the head, and creating a new one for the safety and betterment of the players and the game!

  • @sonah9126

PK, I just wanted to say something.. My old man came down for Magic Round, he's 73 and absolutely loves his footy. He even recalls when you bore the Eels jersey in 89! He's seen the changes in the game just like yourself.
The NRL is trying to make changes, mainly due to litigation and player welfare, which is great, but these were his exact words "Back in the day, you could square up, and you would only get the report, fans would love it since the game would flow. Now, the on-field repercussions are so immediate and unfair, with the penalties and 6 again, alongside the rules getting stricter and stricter, tailored for backs. I don't know how front-rowers can play this game anymore, you tackle high, send off, lead with the shoulder, sin bin, you tackle low, they're gone!"
Some sports by nature, are savage, and not fit for all, and that IN IT OF ITSELF, is why some sports truly are mesmerising and great! The point Gordon was trying to make about the UFC was this. The UFC and mixed martial arts, by nature, is a contact sport. Rather than denying the nature of the sport, they embraced it and it is now one of the world's leading sporting codes. And the UFC's mantra is this 'We want to give what the fans want', not what V'landys or the disgruntled, sensitive, middle-aged housewife wants!
Let's take off our political catering to the powerbrokers Triple M and PK, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to TRY and have a different perspective on this crackdown and rule changes. We struggle to pack out stadiums with all of the major networks pumping out media for the NRL, meanwhile other sports which contains the "contact" that Rugby League seems to be so against (as of the past 10 years), are soaring, reaching never before seen ceilings due to the exponential power of social media marketing. And the 'young people' that you have a condescending stance towards PK, will be the future and the bulk of NRL fans, where there's smoke, there's fire, and if fans are complaining, much like a business and it's customers, you ought to notice, and take it on, instead of ignore it. You make your money off return, satisfied customers, not disgruntled customers that dislike the product because its a far-cry from what it used to be (An example of this was when Arnotts changed the flavouring formula of their biscuits. For the sake of "health", and increasing margins, they decreased the amount of flavour in the product, by assuming what the customer wants. They were met with severe backlash and were forced to release the old formula again because their assumptions were wrong).
Good companies listen to their board, analysts, legal teams, and the opinions of trusted third-parties founded on generally long-standing relationships. Monopolies and empires listen to the customer. It's so simple, the narrative of the sport changing into a shadow of it's former glory is not new. This round is just the nail in the coffin. Yes, technology surrounding concussions has advanced, and there needs to be protection for the players, do so in a way that doesn't diminish the integrity of the game and kill the very thing which made it great by perhaps focusing on club preparation, and recovery, because the risk, the danger, the thrill, the blood, the sweat, the tears, the skill in such conditions, the inhuman like hits, that's what made you want to watch and we are removing the above with the way the NRL is heading..
Peter V'landys has too many yes men around him, and too many greats of the game putting him on a pedestal. He and his teams look at the bottom line, associating increasing views, and fan interaction in the past year, with the new 6 again rule, and concussion crack downs.. The reason why there was an increase, is because the whole world was in lockdown, unemployment through the roof, and all-time highs in gambling related marketing.. not the silly changes to the sport. The administration has incorrectly put 2 and 2 together, as most businessmen do, and now are furthering the damage done to the game, damaging it further to the extent it is no longer Rugby League, might as well watch Netball or boycott the NRL with another Super League war? Because this, is an outrage.

Couldn't agree more with your Arnotts and UFC example. The NRL is starting to feel like it's heading down a route where milking (which already happens at least 20 times per game by all clubs) will be happening so often, we'd be looking like the A-league

@@legaci2164 the difference is the line speed in the current version of rugby league is faster than rugby because in rugby the defenders only have to be behind the last mans feet as apposed to the 10 meters in league this means that the attacking player is at a higher speed into the defensive line which is also moving up which results in less reaction time to adjust to changes. This is why a higher percentage of rugby league players tend to be better at defending if they switch codes as they seem to have more time. And I have played both games and still prefer the game of rugby union. I hope this helps

Someone please educate Paul Kent on tackling whilst in motion. Gordon knows from experience if you drop 30-40cm in height by ducking out of the way of player trying to tackle you the tacklers arm is always going to hit your head and therefore you'll win a penalty at worst and a sin binning of that player at best. It will become tactic in the game to gain an advantage for players to try and get the slightest of head contact at any point in a tackle now.

If the defender simply stood his ground n didn’t even attempt to tackle Teddy, Teddys head would still hit his chest but does that constitute a sin bin? I agree there needs to be a stronger stance on the head highs, The Josh Papalii hit was ugly n deserved to be sent off but some of those sin binnings were pathetic. The junior game will never match what you see on the tv ie speed n intensity the game is played at. The junior game is safer than it’s ever been. There needs to be more focus on promoting that to the parents who want to sign their kids up to play Rugby League and less comparison to the professionals.

Tallis is 100% correct. The last Union world cup was a joke with players getting sent off for nothing. What I want to know is where are all these players who lost their cognitive function? I never seen any and the games been played for over 100 years. May as well go watch NFL. At least those boys can still put on a big hit.

  • @Vegeta_____
    @Vegeta_____ 3 роки тому +1

Paul Kent your future vision is right... but Tallis is spot on about coaches coaching their sides to take maximum advantage of the rules. Look how many divers have emerged since the crusher tackle. Look at every single tackle in the NRL, slowing it down, wrestling techniques, fast play the balls, intentional loose carries in an effort to attract a stripping penalty. You’re kidding yourself if you believe coaches won’t coach their sides to take advantage of high contact. Any contact with the head will result in delayed play the ball in an effort to watch a replay and attract a penalty, especially with the speed of the game increasing and teams needing rests. Head contact needs to be eliminated from the game, but sinbinning and sending off is creating one problem to fix another and it’s causing resentment from fans towards the game of rugby league. Players get paid a lot of money to pursue this career and like any choice, there’s risks. If you know the risk, you follow through with the choice and you’re well compensated for your efforts, then you run the risk of head trauma later in life. The game is entertaining because of its brashness, it’s high impact, it’s speed and it’s personalities within it. If you start taking away from the values that built the game into what it is today, you will kill its interest for future generations and rugby league will be the next rugby union

Tedesco slides into some tackles so by the time contact is made, he is literally on his knees, or even closer to the ground than knees! And it's all at top speed with the defender often having NO OPTIONS. Teddy puts HIMSELF into very dangerous situations REPEATEDLY. Lachlan Burr's sin binning is technically correct, but if it's due to "careless high tackle" - then Teddy has to go as well. His technique is often careless and DANGEROUS to himself. He fucking slid into Lachlan who pretty much stood still and wrapped his arms around Teddy who was on his knees. There is nothing Lachlan could have done. In fact I'd say he did everything correct. There was no aggression, or action, that exacerbated the problem with the tackle, it is insane to think Laclan is "guilty" of anything. WTF was he supposed to do? When Teddy slides around should players let him through the line? That case was ridiculous.
Having said all that, I 100% agree high tackles needs to be a thing of the past, but Tedesco is often his own worst enemy.

Reward the low tackle, ALL juniors under 6-10’s are told to tackle low. Then to catch and wrestle once they hit early teens. It’s shit to watch too, Cameron smith never ‘tackled’ anyone his whole career. Nothing better than seeing someone dip and cut someone in half, or knock someone’s legs from under them.

Why don’t they just get the eyes that don’t want to see these types of shots out of the game? This is a contact sport and from time to time there will be accidents. Every player knows it’s a possibility and they take that risk.
Intentionally high tackles can go for a rest but the accidents can be put on report and dealt with later. That Josh McGuire one was absolute rubbish.

As a player and a fan Paul Kent is kidding himself if he does not think players will now take advantage of this, like gordy said just “slip” before the line wear a soft shot on the top of the head and play against 12.

Game is broken, they change rules on the fly, sack Vlandys and Abdo, go back to pre covid rules, you can't speed up the game to the point the players are gassed then expect them to tackle precise without fail. since this 6 again crap every game has been a blowout it's not enjoyable anymore barely any tense close games it's over by half time.

This is the fault of the coaches who changed the game about 20 years ago. Back then a tackle around the legs with a player over the top was the norm. Then they said , tackle up around the ball and hold them up so the defence had time to get back. This was the beginning of the end for the conventional rugby league tackle.

Yeah Gordon's right. This game is absolutely lost. This is not nrl. Kenty is a dope. He's so extreme. There is no adjustment period and then a relaxing of rules. The rules only get more strict and the game only gets worse. Only illegal tackles with intent or extreme recklessness should be sent off. This sport is too fast to have a rule like this. And no- not everyone wants just black and white rules. We want common sense, and if a ref makes continuous lapses on common sense judgement, then they can suffer the consequences of the fans wrath and possibly the loss of their role as an nrl referee. We have common sense with milking in tackles, how long tackles take to be completed, and for accidental illegal contact when it doesn't really matter (like when corey oats was accidentally elbowed in the head last after his 90 metre try). This game will die if they can't figure out this healthy balance. I'm sick to death of these arguments. Behind desks about what best for the game.

If the game is "safer than ever" how is it there are more concussion injuries than anyone can remember? If things carry on as they are you'll have a match in which five or six players fail HIA assessments. And before anyone opens their trap - it has NOTHING to do with looking for them more in the modern game. People are failing HIA tests because EVERYONE is hunting the upper torso to either jar the ball loose or prevent the offload. Head high tackles are inevitable unless they hit no higher than the midriff down.

  • @andrewmadge

If they care about players, why is there no move to protective equipment? Played the game and followed 20+ years and not one improvement or mandatory head gear has ever been introduced. Read up how seriously NFL took helmets, their policies and standards prove it can be done. Yet watch the game, they haven't changed tackling in any way whatsoever. In fact they lead with the head (crazy dudes)
Watching the game at full speed, in row 2 for 3 days I can see how fast the game is. There is no way a person can drop their tackle that fast, it's not possible. Yes they can aim even lower but the game now has the forwards that can offload, run at angles, not front on to even hit the ribs area. If you try to tackle low there will be offloads every set and you will lose by 50. What amazes me is there was a 'plan to stop' concussions but we are doing it this far into the season. Why didn't they plan this with all the coaches, experts coming in at the start of the season to talk through it and proactively work on this together. It's simple, its a lawsuit based initiative, that's the fact. The NRL couldn't care less about players
Look at UFC, any really violent sport with no regards to what people end up like after the contest are over. They are growing revenue and will outpace the NRL. Soon it won't exist when sponsors walk away to chase the crowds. That is a fact.
Yes protect the players, but at least do it properly and planned so the game can 'change' gradually. Over how many years have concussions been going on? Why does it matter in May but they didn't care in March when the season started?
