    You guys have done it once again! I can't take the hot, muggy tropics so have been eyeing cooler locations. My first 2 week trip to Baguio was last month, Dec 2023, and I miss it. Was thinking of going back for a 2nd, longer visit. But maybe Antigua... I'll look more into it.

    I spent a month in Queretaro but decided to live in San Miguel de Allende which is an hour drive. Same weather but SMA is a walkable city while you really need a car in QRO unless you live in Centro. Spent four months in Boguete but for me it was too small and the weather was not as nice as SMA. just discovered your channel and you do an amazing job.

    Your lady has a very thick accent. Which is fine. She is very smart and insightful. Would it be possible she can try and speak just a bit slower so us old, half deaf Americans don't have to keep hitting the 10 second rewind all the time? I would really appreciate it. Most of your choices for more comfortable locations are the ones I've researched from here in Canada. As retirement locations for older folks my main concern is walkability (not into hiking!) with slippery cobblestone sidewalks and streets.Definitely without skyscrapers and crowding like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong or New York City! Certain countries could be problematic, like Mexico or even Ecuador. Maybe even oxygen levels.

      If I'm not mistaken, Siem Reap and Cuenca have something in common - both have laws preventing highrises from being built. Sounds great. Based on my armchair research, Queretaro was a good choice, followed by Guadalajara. Unfortunately Mexico is being progressively taken over by the cancer of the cartels, they own army, police, officials, etc. spreading out throughout the country, so I felt I had to write Mexico off my list. 😞

    I’ve worked with Karen (car-wrenn) Hilltribe coffee farmers in the mountains of northern Thailand. Elevations are between 700-1000 meters. It’s always cool in the mornings and comfortable throughout the day. I always need a 4-wheel drive truck to navigate the dirt roads. I either don’t go during the rainy season or I need to hire someone with shovels to ride in the truck bed to dig me out the mud.

    Dan and Quian, Is there a burning season there in Ubud like they do in other places with rice paddies? How is the situation with trash in SE Asia? Is a pet peeve of mine to see trash strewn about, but I know that in Central Amer, it is a lack of infrastructure for that.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  8 місяців тому +3

      I don't want to sound fatal but travel outside of Europe, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia will not be a happy place for you if trash here and there ruins your day. Even in the USA when I drive around I see trash strewn about these days. You may find that bothers you less once you have been around it more than a year or two. And if I dare say, the over all feeling of living outside many western countries makes putting up with a little trash here and there a no brainer. One of the reasons I suggest exploratory visits before making any permanent decisions is to find out if living overseas feels right for you. Some people are just happier inside their home country for various reasons. That said, some, like me even, were very uncomfortable for the first 6 to 9 months but eventually if you stay at it you love it more than your home country. Much, much, more for me at least.

      I fly south to the islands of Thailand during burn season. My experience in N. Thailand is that different parts of it have different burn seasons based upon elevation and crops. Most areas of don't burn for a few months. So you just ask locals when burn season starts in that city and when it ends and you fly south for those 2-3 months.

      You are talking about burn season when they burn the crops after harvest instead of till the soil. The elevation and kind of crop determines when harvest occurs. In most parts of N. Thailand it lasts around 2 months from my experience. I just fly south to the islands during that time. Depending on where you live in N. Thailand, you can just ask the locals and they will tell you in advance so you can book in advance.

    Recently returned from visiting Boquete. Constant wind makes it hard to stay hydrated. And the Bajareque wind has to be experienced to understand. On a Bajareque wind day I was rained on from the right, then behind, and finally from the left in 100 feet walking distance. The Pipeline Trail is the one with the 1000 year old tree. There is a local hiking group with a Facebook page. Typical Latin American sidewalks, so not for those who have difficulty walking. While I didn't see any bugs while in Boquete, I was recently refused a blood donation due to Boquete being an at risk area for malaria. No blood donation allowed for 90 days.

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes, Boquete has amazing micro climates. Most of the retire cheap countries have areas with Malaria and Dengue. But 17 years of world travel and I still haven't had either one. Here is my video about that: ua-cam.com/video/CWXAAexSxsI/v-deo.html

    As a general rule of thumb, there is about 1 degree Fahrenheit change for every thousand feet up or down, eg., 5000 ft level is 5 degrees cooler than sea level.

    I have been to two of your cities pai and Medellin. Pai was nice but it was rainy dirty and muddy which made outdoor activities a no go. Medellin was nice but I prefer the north coast. Growing up in midwestern USA I learned to hate cooler weather which makes me think winter is coming on which I hate. So i will take warmer weather. Also Medellin is a far drive from the north coast as land travel in Colombia is not the best and time consuming.

    I was also in Dalat! Loved it so much…. But being in a communist country, how feasible is it to retire there?

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  8 місяців тому +3

      They have no retirment visa in Vietnam. So you have to get clever. Some westerners living in Vietnam are willing to do visa runs every 30 days they love it so much. They now have a 90 days visa so we will see if they let people use that for visa runs. Other people marry a local, get business visas, teach English, or get student visas. Like most of SE Asia, you just talk to locals on the ground when you arrive and learn the various ideas people use to stay once they fall in love with the place. The truth is, if I feature of of the ideas that people use to stay here, then everyone starts using that idea and it gets shut down. So if you are serious, and love it here, then you will be able to find away without talking about it too much. Odd sounding I know, but SE Asia is different from the West.
