I retired to Jomtien Thailand 9 months ago today. I rent a 40 square meter 1 bedroom condo about a 15-minute walk to the beach. I am surrounded by restaurants, bars, pharmacies, and convenient stores. I cook some meals but eat out most of the time. I travel to different parts of Thailand every few months. I am not a drinker or smoker and spend about $1500 a month, all in including visa fees and health insurance. It's a good life at a very affordable price.
What are you paying for health insurance. Please reply here: vagabondbuddha.com/contact/
There ya go. That's sounds like the kind of place for me. What about the language. I no speak Thai. :)
That's where I'm moving. I don't drink, smoke or motorbike. I work out, walk, have friends there, and enjoy its night market
Thanks for the eyewitness report. @@kleerogers

Ukranian people are generally very resourceful, in many cases they've had to be.
Check out average salary & cost of living in Ukraine.
Ukranian people can live equally as a Filipino does, no problem at all.

Live like a local Filipino - they do it all the time. Some expats have done this too - just do not get romantically attached to any of the locals - they will milk you dry.
Go to one of the provinces, live in a small town in a rented room or small tin shack. I have done it, just be aware of the "rules of the jungle" in poor areas.
Make lots of friends - preferably without committing to giving them money (which you will be asked for a lot).
But if you choose one of the 7500+ islands, you will not be far from the ocean.
Keep Strong dude) It is a big catastrophe what happened to Mariupol in 2022 even through Mariupol is being renovated now. Nothing can get back the died people. Is there any compensation from Russian Donetsk PR government?
Can you get residency easily there or do you have to buy visas?
Love you guys. Yall influenced me to travel. I retired in Austin TX. 4 yrs. ago. I'm now 57. I recently started my journey in tokyo and now I'm in okinawa for 2 months. Taiwan next then Thailand and all of SE Asia. No plans to ever return to the states. Thank you for giving me the information to jumpstart my new life!
We're in Texas and have a place in Thailand. Did you keep your place in Austin? Safe travels amigo.
Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand are my favorites as a slow traveler. Thank you 🙏🏼
Budapest would be too cold f/me, and not coastal enough. I like Thailand. I'd have to see Cebu to make a judgement on the Philippines. I've been to Costa Rica and all over Mexico, and I speak Spanish, but prefer S.E. Asia to U.S. proximity. But if I stayed in MX on $1,000 budget it'd be San Miguel de Allende. Never been to Malaysia, been to P.R., Jamaica, Aruba multiple X
Thanks for the $1000 a month cost of living 😃..that's how I want to live to start out ,in those countries 😁

Hi guys. Costa Rica under 1k$, not sure. I loved ecuador but much violence now. I miss Europe but again, under 1k$ ?? Good Surprise. I have to go discover Nicaragua. Mexico is not cheap anymore with the 24% increase of the pesos value. I went to Querretaro and Guanajato on your recommendation and I loved them. First time I rented in Albarata i paid 700cad$ per month now it is 1,200cad$. Sor me I would Guatemala and SEA, mainly Thailand or Vietnam.
Please! Next video - best places for a middle aged single man to retire...2023 edition!
Yes. This
I love the video, you two. And it really is "you two". What a team. You both are very well informed. But your dialog is incredible. You both are obviously equally informed, and so you share a conversation as if some one wrote it and then you agree on which line one or the other will speak without getting off topic. The respect you have together and for each other is like nothing I've ever seen. Thank you for letting us all see your beautiful relationship together. No competition, just a unified flow. Wow.
I would think all of your comments in these videos would be similar with a rent budget of say $500 US/mo. I have an income of more than 2K. But as you well pointed out, one must have an emergency contingency and a way to fund said emergency. But I also like to travel. That consideration in mind, which SE Asian Country would you recommend as a hub to stay and yet be able to visit other near by countries.
Me, I love the markets and when I see street food in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, I drool. I would definitely need to be near one of those. A really big one like Bangkok, I probably would not need to be anywhere else ever. LOL. The other must have for me is great snorkeling/scuba diving very near by. I could spend equal amounts of time underwater and at the fish counter eating what I've seen. LOL. Internet is a must have also.
Public transportation in these places to me is just a no brainer. Traffic, parking, theft, staying alive, insurance, all of these things are of no concern with public transportation. And in most places it is very cheap. Catching a motorcycle taxi maybe not such a smart thing. But the tuk tuks are fine and they know how to go with the big squeeze.
Thanks again for the great video. But the biggest reward for me is watching you two work together. Just wonderful. I love you both and I have meeting you two on my bucket list. ;) Be blessed. Have fun. Lahry

I'm single and a loner...and live very low cost in America.. according to my neighbors..lol..and claim I'm living in a middle class neighborhood 😉🤣🤣 and don't have anything in your house it's still brand new.. they laugh 😂😂. your living like a homeless 😂🤣 person..the house was built brand new.. nothing in it...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣....it's still new.. hahaha 🤣😂😂. bought it to make money 🤑.. waiting on full retirement in 13 more months..then it's time to travel around the world lol..I spend about..$12 dollars a day..in American way of life..
Way to go! So great. In USA, my mom's property tax is more than $12 per day. How did you calculate that?
Yes, it is possible to do US @ $12. And find lots of happiness in minimalism.
@@dirkroeller7092 Yes, I am sure there is happiness at $4320 per year living in the USA. You have found some way to do this: Great. Is your method, of living without owning a home or a car, duplicatible for most people?

Hi Dan and Chung…very nice video…I plan to move to the Philippines this year. I was there before Covid-19. I agree the markets are great to save money but for the seafood go early in the morning as it is more fresh.
Tamarindo is so Americanized that the locals refer to it as Tamagringo! It is very expensive due to so many foreigners visiting and wanting to live there. You can live for $1000 a month in the towns of Occidente (from 30 to 45 minutes from the International Airport) like Grecia, Sarchi, Naranjo, Palmares, and San Ramon. These are more Costa Rican towns with all the amenities and offer nice weather yet only 45 minutes to 1 hour from the capital city and 90 minutes from the beaches of the Central Pacific Coast.
Love hearing your experiences around the world. You two are traveling rock stars!
Rock on brother!
Please remember the airline tickets. You can't just stay in these countries😅. The visas offered to stay beyond your passport are not worth it. I get tired of all the countries after 30 to 90 days😅. 1000.00 will not work😄!!!!
How often you move needs to be added of course. These are on the ground stationary costs not slow travel costs. Thanks for making thtis point.
It's clear they are talking about on the ground monthly expenses.
What a bargain sale. I'm just getting started. I would have felt a little overwhelmed with all the reports. But Dan has a 7 chapters guide that is very helpful for us newbies. 😊😅😂

Thanks guys for another wonderful informative video. I watch all of your video's because I'll be retiring and traveling the world when I'm 62 in a few years. I wish I could pack up and get started right now, but I'm not going to pass up on my company pension that would make it much easier for me financially.
Thank you. I envy your position now, and hope to be in a similar place in a few years; God willing.
that is also my plan. I will be 62 in 18 months and I am already downsizing. My house will be either an Air B*B or sold Turnkey so I can just leave it all. I have only traveled to Panama, but I am excited to travel to other parts of the world. the actual TRIP there might be a challenge. Where are you right now? I am in SWFL.
@@anniesshenanigans3815 That's great, I envy you bc I still have another seven yrs to go. Brooklyn has been my home since birth and I'm still here right now; I've tried to escape a few times in my life when I was a younger man,; but I've always came back home to Brooklyn, with my head hung low, and tail between my legs, haha; but my wife is from Ecuador so I've been there a few times and I love it there. We own a condo in Quito that we currently rent out to a wonderful expat-lady who lives there and does her works online. So my youngest will be finished with college in a couple of years, I'll be 62 in seven yrs and will be able to sell our house live well on just my company pension in Ecuador without having to tap our 401's and file for SS at a later date; God willing but inflation may change this whole idea.
I hope your plans work out, prayers and best wishes for you.
You never talk about a very important part of retiring somewhere. Its about communication with locals. Language and welcoming of the people other than Phillipines. Who wants to move somewhere if they cant connect with locals? Not me.

Dominican Republic is in the hurricane belt of the Caribbean. I also probably wouldn't want to live there. Yayyyyy for Mexico...
Dan didn’t you mention away around the Bali visa requirement. Going into some other part of Indonesia
I don't mention specific workarounds on here because that would put them at risk for future use. You have to talk to expats and visa agents there in one on one conversations as mentioned in the comments part of the video.

With the countries that you mentioned that I’ve been to I agree with. Some countries the rent might be cheaper but the food and nightlife might be more expensive while others the rent might be more expensive but the food and nightlife might be cheaper. I’ve had the experience if a place is too expensive I’ve shortened my stay their and ive also had it where if the lodging is cheaper than expected ive stayed longer..
Thank you for being thinking thoughtful people. I think this video was really well done with a lot of good reliable information.
@ 23:57 totally right 'bout that, the travel savvy individuals are the ones that'll see the phils. as a great dest.
I live on $2K/month here in Dallas, Texas (in a great residential suburb renting my own place). why would I pay $2k/month to live in some undeveloped third world country? I don't get some of these prices I have been seeing lately, a lot of these countries prices have skyrocketed and to get an equivalent lifestyle to my current I would have to pay the same $2k/month.
2000 in Dallas , how my apartment was 1400 nothing special . I lived in Dallas since 1962. I retired to Thailand and have a better life here than I did in Dallas. I live minutes from the beach, eat better and have a better social life. 800 plus 400 for fun. I don’t miss mass shootings, criminal politicians, people walking into stores stealing , homeless people on the streets, woke movement , teaching school age kids inappropriate things , I will take the third world country.

Wow, how much is your rent per month?
Thanks for the video and info. Last year, I lived in the Jomtien area for 6 months and my monthly budget was $3K and that's with companionship with a regular Thai lady for 3x a week without buying any LDs and barfines. I did not eat any western food due way more expensive and been eating Thai food in the market. In my early 50's now, I was planning to retire but I changed my mind in the very last second and back to work in CA. Will do this again, next year.
It is nice to hear your budget numbers. I wonder how that breaks down by category.
Appreciate what you both do. Very helpful. Just signed up for the lifetime membership! Looking forward to the slow travel.
All this talk about rent Two fallacies One I can cash out my car and house Ever hear of negative rent Collect $2000 pay $1000 rent is minus $1000 Can have a company car Can have medical insurance even car insurance paid by a business you own You can grow your own food eat in your own restaurant Trade services Many ways to live lavishly and well under $1000 Can trade 200 sq m houses. Need to get out of the box Be creative.
Thank you @LongThanh-ew4tf! Your interactions help our channel grow! Have a great day. :-) Dan
I'm going to ask... are you both married? I see a ring
Wait till your money runs out she will run too
Same with America.
Hello, valuable information, it is always good to know that you two are well.
Very helpful. Thank you. I want to retire very soon, or at least take my work on the road.
I like the idea of getting down to a very low budget like $2000 a month for the simple fact that it forces you to live like a local.
I biggest bitch about the United States is that everybody’s so busy working that they don’t interact with each other. My big interest in living overseas is Living somewhere where people have the time to interact with each.
That is the biggest difference you will experience overseas.
I would love to retire in Vietnam, but they make it impossible. Looking at South Korea.
Yes, they don't have the retirement visa. Historically people did Visa runs there and got other kinds of visas as mentioned in the video towards the end on "limitations.".
Dan... clarify... the age difference in relationships is it the same for both sexes? Or just men because i have never seen a woman in your videos dating a significantly younger man.
We see younger man older woman all over the world. Just not as common. My sister is with a man 16 years younger.
you should talk to your buddy Old Dog , he just put out his budget for the month , 17,000 and he is a homebody . Someone is selling snake oil
Must be 17000 peso, you can rent a home in Dumaguete for two-three hundred a month on long term leases. I was just there, it’s not my cup of tea to be honest.
How about Healthcare ?
Here is my best info on cheap quality health care.
I seen you the avida in Cebu ? That costed you at least 25k for the month
That is temporary short term rents online. Here is what we do for long term cheap rents. @American.Filipina, Here is how we find cheap apartments all over the world now. Watch the video and read the text to get all of our tips:

Dan and viewers, isn't round trip travel to USA from Malaysia cheaper (maybe half) than anywhere in the PH?
Check Skyscanner. :-)
Great video but just saying chapter makers for a video like this would be good.
Good idea!
Glad I found you here big help to research
I've viewed many of your videos, but have yet to see one interview of a single woman living abroad. Is there a reason for that?
Here is our interview playlist. We have female guests. ua-cam.com/video/Q1G1IBYskf8/v-deo.html
Why is Bali only Indonesia? How about Jakarta or Bandung?
When time allows. :-)
Hey Dan looks great since Covid ended I have been wanting to travel .32 years in Cali I didn’t want to go but now I do
