  • For decades now, it seems like Gatorade has reigned king supreme over the sports drink world... that is until Logan Paul and KSI launched Prime. The brand and the marketing duo behind it make big promises, and an even bigger splash so we thought it was about time we took a look at what’s really going on.

    I'm a Nutrition and Dietetics student here in Australia. We recently looked at the nutrient content of Prime. It's currently not available in Australia as Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) have declared it illegal to be sold. We found that Prime has very very high levels of Vitamin A, so high that it's above the Upper Limit of vit A (borderline toxic). One can of Prime gives you at least 2 times the recommended vit A amount per day. Chronic consumption of this drink can result to liver complications in the long run. It also has twice the amount of caffeine as existing energy drinks such as Red Bull. It's very concerning that KSI and Logan Paul predomenantly have a very young audience and they are consuming it.

    As a runner who does 5ks 10ks and half marathons my go to drink is always water. If I'm feeling it I'll make my own home made "sports drink" which is just lemon or orange juice with some honey and some salt in it, this I usually make only during the summer time. I stopped drinking sports drinks years ago when I noticed that after my runs they would just make me feel sluggish and gave me this feeling that I had ran more than what I thought. It was mostly due to all the sugar in it that was making my body crash. And everything said in the video is true, most if not all of us don't need sports drinks in our diet if we are already eating a healthy diet. I get the appeal of stuff like Prime especially for younger generations who are always on social media and see it on their screens but it doesn't take too long to go over the labels and really check to see what you are putting in your body and that's what I try to teach my younger family members, that not everything presented to you is always true. Stay hydrated y'all and enjoy you summer.

    Ngl I feel like a major part of its success is the design. The bottles and branding is ridiculously eye-catching. Also they have a lot of flavours and you do want to try all of them and see what they are like The drink tastes somewhere between meh and disgusting depending on the flavour, which is why I think in a few years time it won’t really be a thing. Having said that they can and will make an absolute shit ton in the short to medium term.

Recently I felt my heart beating very very fast after drinking one and it felt a little different than a anxiety attack. And then news comes out about FDA being concerned over what’s contained in the energy drinks. I consider myself pretty healthy cause I go to the gym 4 times a week but I’m gonna stop drinking these cause I work way too hard on my body to die of a sudden heart attack..

    I really think the people who actually benefit from sports drinks is blue collar workers especially in hot climates. Die casting and foundries, welding, construction, etc. They legitimately sweat a lot, and the sugar is good for keeping up blood sugar when you're legitimately expending a lot of energy and can't take a break to eat something. However, they seem to mostly appreciate powder mixes to add to water, like my factory has packets of it in vending machines (for free, you just scan your badge). So the premixed stuff isn't even useful to the people who would need it most. Gatorade is incredible when you have a stomach virus, then you REALLY need whatever sugar and minerals you can absorb

  • @isaacdavidson7985
    @isaacdavidson7985 11 місяців тому +7

    I did further looking into the ingredients and in my opinion the biggest flaw of this drink is the artificial sweetner, but this is already common in pretty much all zero calroie drinks anyway. As far as electrolytes while it doesn't have sodium, potassium is another very key electrolyte of the body which is why you see bannas after a lot of 5k races their high potassium content. So this aspect really isn't completely a fallacy. However the main electrolyte that's loss during sweating is sodium thus why sweat is salty, so having such a low sodium content just kinda hurts its intended purpose. As far as all the other "chemicals" that are in the ingredient list they are just added supplements that we already have in are body that are associated with with muscle efficiency, recovery and growth such as zinc, magnesium ,vitamin A, and vitamin b12 . Then there are several added amino acids that also aid in the similar functions. So in my opinion on paper it seems like a low calorie somewhat useful sports drink and may have some benefits and cons compared to others but like a lot of other sports drink unless you're really go hard the benefits would just be comparable to drinking water.

    As an elite cyclist/UA-camr, I have spotted some misinformation about sports drinks in this video. For high performance in any sport, it's all about the carbs intake before and during the effort. You WANT that 20-30g carbohydrate per bottle to perform at a high level.
    World tour cyclists are taking up to 120 g/carbs per hour with a mix of food, gels, and drink mix.
    The electrolytes don't increase performance, carbs/sugar does.
    The electrolytes are usually good to prevent cramping, that's it.
    So yeah, Prime is not a ''performance drink'', it's a beverage.
    Gatorade zero with not sugar is not a ''performance drink'', it's a beverage
    If you want to perform, drink and eat carbs!

    • @RBzee112

      @dykam Рік тому

      Required electrolytes intake is going to depend on sweating etc. It's not "just cramping", though that's probably the most common symptom of a shortage. That said, there's better ways to consume them than most marketed "sports" drinks. But consuming more than you need AFAIK yields nothing and if anything stresses your kidneys, that's correct.

      I agree with you. I was in a sport program when I was a kid. The nutritionist they invite say exactly it. Water is enought for a easy to moderate level of sport. A well balanced diet will be suffisant to cover the need in carbs and the lost of salt. Theses "sport drinks" are only usefull on a intensive sport for more than hour. Rare are peoples doing competive cyclism but lot are sadly drinking those sport drinks or proteine shake.

    • @ska042
      @ska042 10 місяців тому

      @@audreysavard3248 Yeah that's kind of the thing, there's almost no overlap between drinks good for sports and drinks healthy for general use. For multi-hour hard endurance efforts, you WANT tons of sugar (whether from maltodextrin/fructose/sucrose, whatever) and it's ok to consume all that during the effort. Like 80g per bottle, which you drink in an hour or so. However drinking that kind of thing day to day is a bad idea, just super unhealthy because you're not actually burning all those fast carbs right when you're drinking them.

It's also very possible that I'm low in potassium and that will be known once my blood tests come back. I have tried many electrolyte drinks over the years and couldn't stand any of them, including gatorade. I cannot stand salt flavor in a beverage. On a whim, I tried a Prime and it actually helped calm my nausea and dizziness. If there's no way a person will drink an electrolyte drink that tastes like it has salt in it, is it still at least slightly beneficial to drink Prime? It does have 10% coconut water in it, but the flavor actually masks it so I don't gag from coconut water flavor either. I don't like the most common flavors, but I really enjoy the lemonade and the Cherry chill or whatever it's called. Maybe because I only started drinking them a couple of weeks ago, I have never noticed there being any shortage. There's only been a few gas stations where I couldn't find them.

I just drank water until I copped a savage cramp that almost stranded me, so now I just add these little drop in effervescent tablets made by nuun. They have pretty low sugar (1g a tablet which is all I would have) and sodium/magnesium/potassium. Haven't had a cramp since, though I feel i have come close a couple of times I've pushed it. I would never have even considered getting a sports drink for this, I knew you could just buy electrolyte powder. If that's what you need, why complicate it, just slap it into water.
