      Just bought one a few days ago, Grand Highlander Max Hybrid and Its getting about 24 total mpgs so far haven't reset from picking it up. The range is WEAK though, because it only lets you fill the gas tank up to about 10 - 11 gallons, its supposed to hold 17.2 Gallons!

      I haven't let it go to empty, just near empty, I'm tempted to bring a gas container next time it gets near and see if I can run it another 70 miles or so after empty. Supposedly, some people are doing that. It's not a deal killer for me, I/my family are really actually so happy with it, the total package overall. But Toyota does need to fix it! @@ranmas2004

    We bought a GH Platinum Hybrid Max in Sepember of 2023. It now has 7650 miles on it. Over the weekend I drove from South Lake Tahoe, CA to Albany, Oregon and back for a total 1135 miles - I set the odometer at 0 at the start of the trip and didnt clear the mpg between refueling. That trip went over several mountain passes, through rain and sleet, driving around town a bit. My speed was set at 67 miles an hour on the freeway.
    When I arrived back in SLT the mpg showed an overall average of 27.6 mpg. OUTSTANDING !
    Full-time AWD, 400lb of torque...oh what fun it is !!!!!! And...everyone stop worrying about that one cannot put more than 13-14 gallons when empty in the tank. Toyota purposefully left a greater margin of fuel in the tank so not to damage the Turbo.

    Thanks for the video! I have the Grand Highlander hybrid max limited and am averaging around 23 mpg for daily driving. The gas tank max capacity is supposed to be 17 gallons but I am only able to put in a max of 13 gallons once the low fuel light comes on. Is there a large reserve tank and does that mean I have an extra 4 gallons when the warning light comes on? In your video it start with the gauge saying that you have 341 miles of range in the tank...but if you take your average of 28 mpg and multiply it by 17 the range should be 476. Please let me know how many gallons you are able to put into your tank once the low fuel light comes on.

      They have a class action lawsuit against Toyota for the same thing in the RAV 4 hybrids. Its due to the saddle shaped gas tank. You have to wait till it clicks off then SLOWLY hold the handle and it will trickle in and fill the tank. I seen it takes about an additional 3 mins holding the handle to do that. To me thats unacceptable and the reason we will just be going gas model.

      @@ranmas2004 Thanks for this. I've seen various posts about the reasons for not being able to fill the tank beyond 11-12 gallons. Some cite its by design or perhaps an issue with the fuel tank assembly. Can you confirm 100% this is due to the saddle shaped tank in the GH? Some folks are starting to have Toyota replace the entire tank assembly in the GH's.

    Try this test at 65 mpg at instead? The power required to overcome air resistance vs velocity goes up by the cube of your speed. Between 65 and 70, you almost need 25% more energy expenditure. You should gain several mpg at 65.

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  10 місяців тому +1

      I do my MPG tests at 70 because I feel like that is a fair speed that most people would actually do on the freeway. I always use cruise control/Adaptive Cruise Control, and since I don’t go faster than 70 the average speed usually ends up being about 65 or 66 MPH because one does end up having to slow down sometimes on the freeway. Even late at night traffic is still something of a factor in Southern California

    Hey thank you for the video. Quick question: we just picked up a new 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE. Car sticker says 35 miles city and 32 miles high way. I have so far driven it 380 miles (50/50 city/highway). It indicates it has 94 miles to empty. This is because I picked it up with a full tank of gas, capacity at 17.2 gallons. If I tally up all the numbers, I get an average of 27.6 miles of fuel economy, which is nowhere near the advertised fuel economy. Can you comment as to why the numbers are so different?

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 місяці тому

      First of all, I'm not sure your methodology of calculating fuel economy is going to yield the most accurate results. Secondly, if you are still on your first tank of fuel from taking it home from the dealership, the car's internal math may still be off because cars always get bad mileage when they are sitting on dealer lots because they get started, moved 50 feet, turned off, etc. If you really want to know aht it gets, run it down to the fuel light being on, fill it up at your local gas station, reset the trip computer, then run it down till the fuel light comes on again and fuel it up again at the same station on the same pump and do the math. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      It’s not mine, I only had it for a few days to review it and it ran flawlessly. I will say I also drove a Toyota Crown Platinum with the Hybrid Max powertrain, and it did this weird thing where it sort of stumbled briefly when accelerating from a stop sometimes. It seemed weird and not within Toyota’s design specifications. That car had about 9,000 miles on it.

      I love mine, just got one the other day, BUT, can’t fill to fill gas tank capacity of 17.2, only about 10 gallons I get on an empty tank which means more fill ups / less range. HUGE Toyota fail, hope they fix it soon!!! All that being said, I’m super loving it, they just need to fix this problem.

      In everyday driving it probably does. When ever I do my MPG tests I use "Normal" mode or the equivalent to maintain consistency. However, even if I had used Eco mode on this drive it probably wouldn't have made much difference since I was using adaptive cruise control.

      Even more alarming for you is gonna be, what is your range on full tank? I’d wager about 365-370ish? You should have a range or about 450 - 470 and they will tell you it’s because it’s new vehicle and it needs to calibrate, but just go to the pump on an empty tank and see how much it fills, should be around 17 gallons, but it will only take around 10 to 12! Do some searches, this is big fail on Toyotas GH hybrid! I do love mine, but it’s total BS

  • @elementsoflightandmusic
    @elementsoflightandmusic 10 місяців тому +1

    The problem is your range, you should have ability to fill up to at least 15 gallons of a 17.2 gallon tank, because Toyota supposedly needs some reserve for the hybrid system, but instead, you’re going to be able to fill it up on an empty read tank of about 10 - 12 gallons. HUGE fail on Toyota, I just bought one of these a few days ago and noticed it and many people in various forums dealing with the same problem, I want at least 450 range which is about what is advertised from Toyota.

      Chevy Traverse holds 21 gallons and has a range of 590 miles, costs less, is bigger and makes 310hp and 326hp next year. Toyotas are econo boxes with no sole for people that say a vehicle is only supposed to get you from point a to point b. This is why no one is excited to get a Toyota besides the 86 which is a Subaru and the Supra which is a BMW.

      I'm going to check that baby out yeah, it looks pretty good and seen some good reviews about it. The Tahoe looks pretty sweet too, it may be just a little too big for what we want. For now, we're pretty happy with the GH, but probably later next year we'll look around and see if its worth getting something else. Resale value though, I think Toyotas have historically held value more though. Is that Traverse actually geting 590 miles?@@andrewf8486

    The Chevy Traverse can get 27mpg there are a couple people that have tested this on UA-cam. It is bigger it has more 3rd row leg room, nicer seats, and a 3.6 v6, NOT A HYBRID, and costs less. It also makes 310 in 2023, and gets a boost to 326 in 2024 with a new turbo 4 banger and will probably get better fuel economy. I don’t understand Toyota people, they are second best at everything. Buy American save some money get the Chevy.
