Living With A Wolf or Wolfdog

  • Lorne was born at a zoo in Georgia who breeds a select number of wolf pups to be used for educational purposes and for ambassadors for their species. Lorne's brother, Wyatt can be seen at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. Lorne is being raised with the hope of using him in educational talks to raise awareness for an often misunderstood animal. Despite media attention that wolves in the wild have stabilized their numbers, they are still very much at risk. Wolf hunting continues to persist, both legally and illegally. Wolves are still stigmatized in society, especially by farmers and ranchers who if merely seeing a wolf will on sight, no matter the threat. This mentality is hurting our intelligent friend, whose relationship and companionship led us to the domesticated dog we have today and love. Lorne visits with the public regularly and even though he's just a cub, he has instantly charmed his way into the hearts of many others who before misunderstood and feared one of our closest ties to the natural world.
    Lorne is a subspecies of the Grey (or Timber) Wolf. He was born in April (wolves are only born in the spring, unlike domesticated dogs) and until he came to me just shy of 7 weeks was used in meet-and-greets at the Georgia zoo. In July he went on a trip across the United States from out West to Chicago. Unfortunately once there, he swallowed a small slip lead and had to have a life threatening surgery to remove it. His recovery was remarkable and the vet that preformed the surgery said it was the fastest she had ever seen. Wolves are strong and very adaptable. Their immune system due to their varied gene pool and lack of interbreeding as seen in domesticated dogs, makes them lack the health problems they often do. It was a scary time, but thankfully today you wouldn't even know it ever happened (except for the constant reminder of paying off the bill!).
    I'm working with Lorne every day and I hope that he is able to continue to reach out to the public as he matures. It is common that wolves once establishing a territory upon reaching adulthood have trouble leaving it and feel much more comfortable at home than in strange places. We will see what path Lorne wants to follow in life, but I hope that he will be kind enough to continue to make a positive impression on others and be an ambassador for his species.

    Does a wolfdog like your's get any separation anxiety? If so, what does he do when your gone?

    • @camelsandfriends
      @camelsandfriends  5 років тому +821

      No separation anxiety issues at all. When I am not home, which is very rare because I work with my pack and work at home for a living. But I do of course leave my home sometimes. When that happens, he goes inside an extra-large dog crate. The kind you could fit an entire family in. He's comfortable in there. Dogs are den animals, of course, that is why you can crate them. But I have found that wolves and wolfdogs are even more comfortable in them. Which makes sense.
      He just sleeps and never is anxious when I return. Very calm. Then he goes back out into his enclosure.
      A lot of this has to do with how he was raised though and all the time I spent with him. His brother (same litter) is not like this. He is very anxious to the point where Six Flags was unable to use him for their intention of interacting with the public.
      If you go to www.restarea1mile.com/camelsandfriends/lorne.html -- There is a video there of his brother Wyatt appearing on a news program. You can see how anxious he is. I was told by his trainers he is like that all the time and they asked for advice and what I did different with Lorne.
      So you may end up with a wolf/dog like that. I don't know where they went wrong, but at a certain age it is going to be very hard to fix.

      camelsandfriends I have a half Dingo and so similar :)
      Absolute madhouse when I am around to "impress" but when I leave the house she is very content being alone and just rests in my room.
      Seems their Wild Genes do come into play :)
      What your Wolf would have in friendly agression my Dingo doggy is more "digging up omnivorous roots and trying to leap up and catch birds/bats to eat".
      Weird kinda omnivorous behaviour from the Dingo blood.

    • @camelsandfriends
      @camelsandfriends  5 років тому +345

      Yes. And if you do still want to live with a wolf or wolfdog-- make sure you understand what you are getting into. If you do and that doesn't bother you, you could be among a small amount of people that can live happily with one. But odds are you are not.
      This wolf here I raised from six weeks old. We have a very strong bond. When he was three years old he attacked me and I think would have killed me had I not reacted properly.
      He was redirecting aggression onto me after being stung by fire ants. Not something I could control too much. But think about it. A domesticated dog isn't likely to do that to you and wouldn't be able to kill you as fast as a wolf can. But a predator acts on instinct and he jumped me the second he was in pain.
      I have it on video if you look at his channel playlist. Something to watch before ever considering getting a wolf or wolfdog. I do not regret it, but I am a typical dog owner. I work with wild animals.

      If you're a wolf/wolfdog owner, they probably won't. In order for you to own such an animal you need to prove them that you are in charge, aka you are the alpha of the "pack". Which means when something bad happens they'll hide and expect you, the leader, to deal with it.

    • @Mastezz
      @Mastezz 6 років тому +32

      Alex A But other wolves in the pack will help. Such as a deer getting mauled by more than one wolf. Yes you’re the alpha but that doesn’t necessarily mean your wolf won’t help you

      wolves don't work so well as guard animals as a normal guard dog for the reasons Alex A. mentioned above they likely won't be so territorial as a dog. I've known a couple wolf dogs and they were very aggressive if you approached them personally but did not give a shit about people walking on their owner's property.

    • @undeadpresident
      @undeadpresident 6 років тому +1

      Alex A to further your point I hope people realize that if you have a wolf you better know how to assert dominance thoroughly or the wolf may attack you trying to assert it's own dominance....they are way more aggressive this way than domesticated dogs and have been known to kill their owners if the owners don't know this

      He's never been destructive. He just loves to move things around, get into things, be curious. But he has never torn anything apart, chewed on anything or otherwise caused damage in that way. Or really at all.
      He has a lot of enrichment and things to do, so it keeps him mentally active. Any animal that is destroying a structure or furniture has lack of stimulation and has developed mental problems. It is not normal for a wolf, a dog or any animal to be focusing their energy on tearing up a couch...

    For people that keep asking if wolf dogs are dangerous, yes. But not just wolf dogs. Any pet you have can be dangerous. A wolf dog may never bite anything but a toy in his/her life. Whereas a Chihuahua could bite your ankle. Wolf dogs have very watered down genetics. A wolf dog usually only has about 23% wolf in them but 77% husky or whatever else, the rest is domesticated dog meaning they are much safer than wolves. Wolf dogs are much more tame than a regular wolf. But they are still very messy, and do have natural instincts in them. Don't ever physically punish them or abuse them verbally or physically in any way that makes them feel threatened. Be gentle with them and you'll be fine.

Before the owners got to know who I was, I asked two separate neighbors, one was a trooper and the other coast guard, if the wolf dog was bugging them. They told me he is fine and to leave him alone, almost in a semi hostile way. No I replied, he is my baby, just want to make sure you don't have a problem with him running around, they both smiled and said he is a pleasure to have around. He was huge, people would joke that he was actually a small horse disguised as a dog. He spent many years with us, my kids grew up with him. Sadly he died of cancer last winter. Best pet and friend I ever had.

      Excuse my intrution, this did isn't destructive. Its playing n being active. So many items were there it never chewed or torn anything. Did you see that leather sofa? Not a scratch on them. Its given enough EXCERSIZEgiven it's really happy.

      I keep a wolf dog in the house and he will chew shoes if given a chance my tiny mixed breed mutt is way more destructive. He is a their and will steal all kinds of things and hide them in his den ( An extra large kennel covered in sheets in his own bedroom).

    Lorne seems to be a kleptomaniac AND a hoarder! I wouldn't be surprised if you come home one day and find your beanbag strewn about the whole house!! Upon returning home from dinner our Doberman did just that! Me and my boyfriend froze (seeing the carnedge) looked each other and laughed SO hard I couldn't breathe! (wish I had a picture) it took days and days and days to clean it up, beanbag 'guts' EVERYWHERE!!!! woof

    • @nissaliuschrystalis5953

      I believe he is a pure wolf, however. Unsure of the white patch of fur on his chest. I have never worked with a pure wolf, only wolf hybrids, coyote hybrids and a coyote wolf hybrid. The coywolf has a white patch on his chest. So he may have a great grandpa who was a dog. :) Beautiful creatures, they are. Perfect animals.

      it's best to let them on after they know you're the alpha, otherwise they use to 'exercise' their power as alpha

    • @frankiepoppet
      @frankiepoppet 8 років тому +23

      Mine don't get on the sofa, because I am alpha and it's my sofa. They have their own arm chairs in another room, they are still part of the family but know where their place is and never step out of line because after all is said and done, they are animals and people need to remember that.

      Dogs aren't pack animals and wolves don't ''enforce their place as alpha'', they act as parents, because that's all an ''alpha'' is. Alphas don't move others to lay where they are, they let the others eat first in times of scarcity, they usually walk at the back of the pack, and they don't usually pin or fight others within the pack. A wolf pack is made of a breeding pair and typically 3 years of offspring in the wild. Unless you're their offspring congrats, you pretty much are ''alpha''.
      My pups sleep on the bed and get the the couch whenever they want and they are wonderful pets. Very friendly, terrific listeners, just all around awesome pets. Just as the original commenter said, they're family, not slaves. :)

    You got a wolfdog abut your house is set up in a frilly way.
    My house is very minimalistic. All the furniture is leather (older not $3000 new stuff) and my two German Shepherds have full reign of the place.
    Nothing is off limits. Couches, chairs, kitchen - even the basement.
    At the same time, nothing is set up to fail. Pictures on the wall are waist high or higher.
    Built in dining room cabinet is real wood drawers and glass doors are above waist height.
    My place is SO DOG FRIENDLY that I command bot dogs to sit in the kitchen, next to the fridge and clearly out of sight of the other rooms.
    I then hide about 1/4 lb of pepperoni slices ALL OVER THE HOUSE.
    Window sills (up high!), under chairs, on the built in, between cushions, in my bedroom etc...
    Once im done, I give the release command and watch them hunt.
    Ever see a GS push a couch to get to a treat? It's pure hunting instincts.
    This pays off in spades - When I walk them off leash, they follow commands with military precision because they KNOW that I balance it off with fun time!

      He's a wolf and he doesn't live inside. He has an enclosure outside. Wolves aren't meant for indoor living.
