@@luisontiveros6377 I bought my spark plugs pre gapped and just verified gap with gap tool. A Google search of your particular model will bring up spark plug gap needed
The fact that you have to remove the intake manifold to access spark plugs shows how crazy all manufacturers are and doing everything they can to keep you going to the dealer. Good to see social media taking a good turn and helping consumers save a dealer visit.
For sure, entirely too timely of a process than what it should be. Some have been able to change without intake removal, but it's dependent on space in the engine bay and size of hands/arm!

Tech tip: its recommended to rotate rear ignition coils to the front. They experience more heat and fail more often. If the fail in front alot easier to get to. Time saver
I've watched a few Acadia spark plug videos already, and I must thank you for a good job on this one (best I've seen so far). Very smooth instructional vid! Would like to suggest that when removing the manifold, the criss cross bolt removal should start on the outside corners, then move to the center bolts. For installation, start on the enter bolts, then move to the corner bolts. This is the way engine heads are always removed and torqued on, and the same applies to any large flat, multibolt surface matings. Awesome directions, and includes many tips that DIY'ers should know to have a professional result.
Thanks for the bolt removal tip, that makes really good sense given the tightening starts goes inside out...removal would be reversed. This is why I love making videos, always learning something new from the UA-cam community!

Hello. I just wanted to send you a little thank you note. I was wanting to change my coil packs and spark plugs on my 09 Outlook. I've done wheel bearings, rotors, etc. so I'm not a total novice, but haven't ever done this type of fix before. This video tutorial was VERY much appreciated! Great job on the details. I had mine apart and back together in 1 hour and 45 minutes! I even did the wire harness and vacuum tubes twice because I forgot my felt heat shield, AND fixed my air compressor hose along the way. So, technically it would've been more like 1 hour and 30 minutes! Anyway, thanks again for the great job! Stay safe and have a great day!

Thank you so very much- we got stuck while putting it all back together, couldn’t find where to put one of the vacuum hoses, I watched the first min and a half and found out we didn’t separate the short one we pulled the whole piece off the front and couldn’t find the nipple!!! Again, thank you for taking the time, I’d be stuck at grandpas an hour from home for the night lol
Thanks for your video very informative. You forgot to mention the tightening sequence of the intake bolts. They are tightened in a Cris-cross pattern. They are torqued at 17 ft lbs. (This is important information to prevent vacuum leaks.
Great, detailed video...one technician pet peeve though - no late model GM vehicle has SAE fasteners on it, they went to metric in the 90s. That's why you had to use a 10mm on the coil hold down bolts instead of a 7/16". The manifold bolts are 13mm (though a loose 1/2” will obviously fit sometimes) - your friendly local professional LS bro

Great video!!!! Direct and to the point. Gave me all I needed to know to change out the plugs from my wife's 2009 Traverse. One suggestion, I found through other threads to make sure to use OEM plugs to avoid other problems in case you didn't mention in your video. You ROCK!

I have a 2012 DI and was able to change all 6 without removing intake manifold. Total time of about an hour, 6 and 12 “ extension with a swivel adapter made it easy. Good video here
I'm definitely attempting to do it on the next go around without taking the manifold off. Less hassle for sure. Thanks for the tip on the swivel adapter!
I’m with Muscle here. I didn’t change the set but I did change #3. Which is the middle on the rear bank. Used two shorter extensions about 3” or so and a swivel. You’re basically doing it blind, but everything is reachable. It was maybe 10 min for that one plug if that. I highly recommend giving it a try. Your vid is great and the best one I’ve seen for swapping plugs on the crazy L motor, and made the whole process easy. I’m a huge fan of you letting us know what tools we’d need right off the bat. Awesome. My problem turned out to be a bad coil which was determined by swapping with the #4 and the issue swapped cylinders. Coils are even easier than the plug. Keep up the good work.
I’m going to try the reach around method. Even if it takes longer and causes me more pain, I’m stubborn and just don’t want to remove the whole manifold.
Great video with clear and helpful directions!! I thought I would share some of my experience: on the three plugs towards the rear of the engine (the hard to reach ones) there was a hose (not a car guy so I don’t know what it is for) that ran across the top of the coils for each cylinder that made it a little tricky, but if you remove the coil wires you can shimmy the coil packs off. Also I lost the rubber piece in my spark plug socket, it stayed with the spark plug in cylinder 3, and I didn’t realize it was stuck on the spark plug until I tried to replace the coil pack and it wouldn’t go on! Needless to say, 3 hours and a dental tool later, I got everything put back together and car runs great! Thanks for the video and be careful out there!
Appreciate the thorough breakdown of your experience. This is good info, especially the info about the coil pack obstruction and the solution thanks! The rubber grommet that can get pulled out of the spark plug socket. Happens to me as well, never a fun time haha. I've tried using super glue to keep it in there, that works fairly good

Great video! In the process of changing out the alternator on our 2012 and figured I should do the plugs as well. It looked like it was going to be a lot worse but after watching this it seems pretty straightforward.
Great job. I did this a couple of weeks back on my wives 2014 Buick Enclave.I did it without removing the Intake, but removing it would have gave me so much more room.
Great video and thanks for sharing. The one tech tip I would add is to purchase a new intake manifold gasket so you can replace the gasket on reinstallation of the manifold. You can take the chance and keep using the gasket but if you think about it spark plugs are changed at about 97k miles it doesn't make sense to keep using the old gasket. A new gasket is about $15 - $20 dollars.
That's a great tip, I started to think about the effort to get back to that gasket if there was a failure. Definitely makes sense to replace while in there
Thanks for the feedback! At the time I made this video I couldn't find a reliable source for the torque spec but I did end up tightening my intake bolts to 17 ft pounds which appears to be the consensus for this year vehicle. Glad the video was helpful overall
I’ve seen a lot of these type videos but this is the Best and most complete I’ve ever seen. The only thing (I mean the only thing) left out was the torque setting for the manifold bolts and you addressed that below. Great job!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Made my spark plug replacing job a lot easier to tackle although my issue was a loose cable on one of the coils. I needed new spark plugs anyways since the Acadia has almost 155k miles and who know if they ever been changed. Definitely looked like needed new ones.
Mission acomplished ! I certainly didn't set the speed record others reported, but did get it done. The dealer quote on this job is $500, all labor i assume cause the plugs cost me about $36. My only tip is to disconnect the plug wires from ignition coil before popping it off the plugs, an easy extra step will make moving the coil quicker.
Thanks for the video! I need to do this soon. I have a 2014 Chevy traverse. Performing basic maintenance is so over complicated! Want to change the coolant? Ok take off these nine clips to get to the coolant reservoir, take off the tire and wheel well trim. Want to change to spark plugs? Ok remove this nineteen bolts, trim, and vacuum hoses. Only thing that seems to be easy is changing the transmission fluid.
I have a 2011 Enclave and did the water pump and drive belt from the top. Remove the fuse box and engine mount, not a big deal. But much more work than any other vehicle. Thermostat was a pain in the ass. That damn spring inside and all the soft aluminum parts forced me to remove the whole thermo assembly from the hoses. Then I did coolant flush and had to do it all 2x to get the new thermo back in. I will be glad when I get rid of this truck.
Pretty clear very accurate 😊👍spark plugs you really want to put them in the quarter of a turn after snug .You don’t want to lose compression. I seen it many times working on cars 👍great video
Used to have this same problem when doing plugs in my old 4 cylinder Porsche. Air cooled engines ran very rich as a cooling aid and fouled plugs often. Dug into my wallet and bought the special spark plug sockets with a magnent inside instead of the forever failing then disappearing foam rubber insert. Never looked back and they last, well, forever.

Ahh good point, it took me about an two hours first time and only hour the next two times. Fairly quick process after first go around and learning locations of plugs

Good video good job....old hot rodders tip from an old hotrodder if you dont have a spark plug wrench with the rubber insert you can use a short rubber hose that fits over the plug to hand start it so no cross threading

Thanks for the feedback man, definitely gives me info to build on for future videos. While the dielectric grease is not required per FSM, a lot of people I talk to say it's a good practice and on older cars you see it often enough in their wire connectors from factory. I've been trying to dig into more manufacturer service manuals and even race teams haha to see what is their consensus, but of course that's not really a significant piece of info they are sharing. I would say if you live in a harsh weather environment, sure add some per the directions. But if you live in pretty typical environmental conditions and haven't had issues before with spark plugs or your electrical connections in general, don't worry about it.

Just did my 2012, did NOT have to remove the intake manifold. Used a 10 inch extension on front plugs ans 6 inch extension on back plugs(as mentioned in video). GREAT video tho, Thanks!
If you look at the video around 5:15, you can see the gasket around the intake runners, they also have the triangular mounting guides for the intake manifold on the gasket. I kept the same manifold because it was in good shape, but definitely replace if you're not sure on its integrity. That way you only have to go in there once.

Good Morning Engineered Mojo! I have a 2011 3.6 ltr Acadia... Thank you for the great video! But I have a couple of questions... A few weeks back, I had noticed that my car was running rough... Thinking it might have been the transmission, I took it to the shop, he test drove it, then put it on an analyzer and told me it wasn't the transmission at all but it was the plugs/wires?? She only has about 54k miles on her... So, I purchased new plugs only... In the old days, you could sometimes tell if you had a bad SP wire at night if you started the car and saw arching between the wires... Nowadays, how would you know if you have a bad wire without having special equipment?? Also, I find it kind of odd, that with the mileage being so low the SP and wires would go bad? What might cause this? Thank you..
Good morning! Hope your day is starting off well besides your car concerns. It's not uncommon for plugs and wires to need replacement around 50k. Given the relative cheap cost and me doing the work (free labor) I usually change my plugs and wires in my cars every 60k...about every two years. That's also typically car manufacturer tune up maintenance schedule. Now going to your specific issue, your car has ignition coils and spark plugs so not spark plug wires necessarily. If your car is running rough but not throwing a check engine code I'd risk it by just changing plugs. But it's a process getting back in there if you need to change ignition coils as well. If you are paying for the service to be done just go ahead and replace it all because you'll be paying double labor if an ignition coil is bad but for some reason not throwing a check engine code. With this video, the correct tools, and a free day you can easily do the work yourself though. Hope this helped and feel free to ask any follow up questions!

@@ritaspear811 short intermittent driving as opposed to more highway steady driving could be a cause for plugs to wear a bit early. The climate you live in can also cause additional wear and strain e.g. extreme heat or cold can cause engine components to work harder to produce same engine power. But it can also just be a faulty plug that is failing a bit earlier than the others. But at that mileage it wasnt too far off from needing a tune up
Yeah, it was easy. Not bad at all. I think the book calls for pulling the intake plenum, but you don't have to. Probably took an hour to do. To me, this is what UA-cam should be used for. The hell with college.
Oh man... this seems relatively easy, but im always nervous removing major engine components like intake manifold and stuff. However, with this very well put together video, it certainly makes it seem less daunting. but idk... i definitely would like to save $300 for spark plug replacment.
If you take your time and take pictures along the way for areas that may seem confusing you should be fine 🙂 hardest part is removing intake manifold and that is just bolts and wire looms to be moved. Glad you found the video helpful and hope the install, if you decide to do it, goes smooth! Definitely have to weigh time vs cost benefit
Nice job! The Acadia is a beast! Overall very happy with the vehicle and I hate the new cvt transmission on newer vehicles. I feel like all new cars have a 5 year life and repairs costs even more nowadays!
Cuban CigarMan preaching to the choir! Newer cars, except a few models/brands, seem set up to support the dealership maintenance shops or support new car sales. Plus it's getting harder to work on newer models in a home garage

That’s not even the bad one, I’ve seen vehicles where you’ve gotta move the engine. Take off a forward mount and tip it forward

I’m with Muscle here. I didn’t change the set but I did change #3. Which is the middle on the rear bank. Used two shorter extensions about 3” or so and a swivel. You’re basically doing it blind, but everything is reachable. It was maybe 10 min for that one plug if that. I highly recommend giving it a try. Your vid is great and the best one I’ve seen for swapping plugs on the crazy L motor, and made the whole process easy. I’m a huge fan of you letting us know what tools we’d need right off the bat. Awesome. My problem turned out to be a bad coil which was determined by swapping with the #4 and the issue swapped cylinders. Coils are even easier than the plug. Keep up the good work.
I’m going to try the reach around method. Even if it takes longer and causes me more pain, I’m stubborn and just don’t want to remove the whole manifold.
How did you do it without removing the manifold? isn’t it over the top of the plugs?
Great video with clear and helpful directions!! I thought I would share some of my experience: on the three plugs towards the rear of the engine (the hard to reach ones) there was a hose (not a car guy so I don’t know what it is for) that ran across the top of the coils for each cylinder that made it a little tricky, but if you remove the coil wires you can shimmy the coil packs off. Also I lost the rubber piece in my spark plug socket, it stayed with the spark plug in cylinder 3, and I didn’t realize it was stuck on the spark plug until I tried to replace the coil pack and it wouldn’t go on! Needless to say, 3 hours and a dental tool later, I got everything put back together and car runs great! Thanks for the video and be careful out there!
Appreciate the thorough breakdown of your experience. This is good info, especially the info about the coil pack obstruction and the solution thanks! The rubber grommet that can get pulled out of the spark plug socket. Happens to me as well, never a fun time haha. I've tried using super glue to keep it in there, that works fairly good

Instead of hand tightening, use a rubber hose on the end of the plug.... it won't allow the plug to cross thread..... great video
Rubber hose is a great idea, even more safe guard against cross threading. Thanks for sharing that, will add to my small but growing skillset haha

Great job. I did this a couple of weeks back on my wives 2014 Buick Enclave.I did it without removing the Intake, but removing it would have gave me so much more room.
Great video and thanks for sharing. The one tech tip I would add is to purchase a new intake manifold gasket so you can replace the gasket on reinstallation of the manifold. You can take the chance and keep using the gasket but if you think about it spark plugs are changed at about 97k miles it doesn't make sense to keep using the old gasket. A new gasket is about $15 - $20 dollars.
That's a great tip, I started to think about the effort to get back to that gasket if there was a failure. Definitely makes sense to replace while in there

Thanks for the feedback! At the time I made this video I couldn't find a reliable source for the torque spec but I did end up tightening my intake bolts to 17 ft pounds which appears to be the consensus for this year vehicle. Glad the video was helpful overall

Thank you! Made my spark plug replacing job a lot easier to tackle although my issue was a loose cable on one of the coils. I needed new spark plugs anyways since the Acadia has almost 155k miles and who know if they ever been changed. Definitely looked like needed new ones.

Mission acomplished ! I certainly didn't set the speed record others reported, but did get it done. The dealer quote on this job is $500, all labor i assume cause the plugs cost me about $36. My only tip is to disconnect the plug wires from ignition coil before popping it off the plugs, an easy extra step will make moving the coil quicker.

Thanks for the video! I need to do this soon. I have a 2014 Chevy traverse. Performing basic maintenance is so over complicated! Want to change the coolant? Ok take off these nine clips to get to the coolant reservoir, take off the tire and wheel well trim.
Want to change to spark plugs? Ok remove this nineteen bolts, trim, and vacuum hoses.
Only thing that seems to be easy is changing the transmission fluid.
I fully feel your struggle. I'm not sure what engineer was designing the layout, but functionality for maintenance was not their top priority
I have a 2011 Enclave and did the water pump and drive belt from the top. Remove the fuse box and engine mount, not a big deal. But much more work than any other vehicle. Thermostat was a pain in the ass. That damn spring inside and all the soft aluminum parts forced me to remove the whole thermo assembly from the hoses. Then I did coolant flush and had to do it all 2x to get the new thermo back in. I will be glad when I get rid of this truck.

Pretty clear very accurate 😊👍spark plugs you really want to put them in the quarter of a turn after snug .You don’t want to lose compression. I seen it many times working on cars 👍great video

Used to have this same problem when doing plugs in my old 4 cylinder Porsche. Air cooled engines ran very rich as a cooling aid and fouled plugs often. Dug into my wallet and bought the special spark plug sockets with a magnent inside instead of the forever failing then disappearing foam rubber insert. Never looked back and they last, well, forever.
The right tool will make a repair job feel like night and day 🙌🏾

Good video good job....old hot rodders tip from an old hotrodder if you dont have a spark plug wrench with the rubber insert you can use a short rubber hose that fits over the plug to hand start it so no cross threading

Thanks for the feedback man, definitely gives me info to build on for future videos. While the dielectric grease is not required per FSM, a lot of people I talk to say it's a good practice and on older cars you see it often enough in their wire connectors from factory. I've been trying to dig into more manufacturer service manuals and even race teams haha to see what is their consensus, but of course that's not really a significant piece of info they are sharing. I would say if you live in a harsh weather environment, sure add some per the directions. But if you live in pretty typical environmental conditions and haven't had issues before with spark plugs or your electrical connections in general, don't worry about it.

If you look at the video around 5:15, you can see the gasket around the intake runners, they also have the triangular mounting guides for the intake manifold on the gasket. I kept the same manifold because it was in good shape, but definitely replace if you're not sure on its integrity. That way you only have to go in there once.

Good Morning Engineered Mojo! I have a 2011 3.6 ltr Acadia... Thank you for the great video! But I have a couple of questions... A few weeks back, I had noticed that my car was running rough... Thinking it might have been the transmission, I took it to the shop, he test drove it, then put it on an analyzer and told me it wasn't the transmission at all but it was the plugs/wires?? She only has about 54k miles on her... So, I purchased new plugs only... In the old days, you could sometimes tell if you had a bad SP wire at night if you started the car and saw arching between the wires... Nowadays, how would you know if you have a bad wire without having special equipment?? Also, I find it kind of odd, that with the mileage being so low the SP and wires would go bad? What might cause this? Thank you..
Good morning! Hope your day is starting off well besides your car concerns. It's not uncommon for plugs and wires to need replacement around 50k. Given the relative cheap cost and me doing the work (free labor) I usually change my plugs and wires in my cars every 60k...about every two years. That's also typically car manufacturer tune up maintenance schedule. Now going to your specific issue, your car has ignition coils and spark plugs so not spark plug wires necessarily. If your car is running rough but not throwing a check engine code I'd risk it by just changing plugs. But it's a process getting back in there if you need to change ignition coils as well. If you are paying for the service to be done just go ahead and replace it all because you'll be paying double labor if an ignition coil is bad but for some reason not throwing a check engine code. With this video, the correct tools, and a free day you can easily do the work yourself though. Hope this helped and feel free to ask any follow up questions!

@@ritaspear811 short intermittent driving as opposed to more highway steady driving could be a cause for plugs to wear a bit early. The climate you live in can also cause additional wear and strain e.g. extreme heat or cold can cause engine components to work harder to produce same engine power. But it can also just be a faulty plug that is failing a bit earlier than the others. But at that mileage it wasnt too far off from needing a tune up

Yeah, it was easy. Not bad at all. I think the book calls for pulling the intake plenum, but you don't have to. Probably took an hour to do. To me, this is what UA-cam should be used for. The hell with college.

Oh man... this seems relatively easy, but im always nervous removing major engine components like intake manifold and stuff. However, with this very well put together video, it certainly makes it seem less daunting. but idk... i definitely would like to save $300 for spark plug replacment.
If you take your time and take pictures along the way for areas that may seem confusing you should be fine 🙂 hardest part is removing intake manifold and that is just bolts and wire looms to be moved. Glad you found the video helpful and hope the install, if you decide to do it, goes smooth! Definitely have to weigh time vs cost benefit
Nice job! The Acadia is a beast! Overall very happy with the vehicle and I hate the new cvt transmission on newer vehicles. I feel like all new cars have a 5 year life and repairs costs even more nowadays!

becarefull using anti-seize on the spark plugs it can pull the thread out of the alum heads if you over tighten them nice video !!

Not needed, I can't remember service interval for coil packs but it's significantly longer than spark plugs
