I have a Wenger Ranger SAK which has both the saw and scissors. I prefer the Wenger over the Victorinox because the scissors have a lever which operates off one of the mainsprings of the knife, and I prefer the claw/hook style can opener to that of the victorinox. I find it more useful for other tasks. Sadly, victorinox bought out wenger so the latter is becoming harder to find.
My choice is the Trekker for small bushcraft projects. It has all the same tools but is a little bigger. My Victorinox is my most used bushcraft tool. I also use it in the wood shop alot as well. Rock on brother.
I got my Camper all dinged up just putting it in my pocket and occasionally sand/grit/whatever in the works which is annoying so all folders go in a pouch of some kind now. The Farmer is becoming one of the 3 most used SAKs I own along with the Camper and old style German army knife. I prefer folding scissors in the med kit too, they're where you need them when you need them.
Tend to favour models like the Camper for the pen blade. It's kept unused and sharp as much as possible to use for medical type tasks. Had to gouge dead thorns out of my legs a couple of times when the tweezers weren't working anymore, those things cause infection pretty quickly if not fully removed and disinfected. The back of the saw works well with a fire steel so don't need the reamer for that and the Camper has a reamer (though less handy). Not that this would stop me from purchasing an Alox Farmer as they're still great pocket knives.
Maybe the Harvester, or Swiss Army 7 in the catalogue, is worth a look, same as the Farmer except it has a pruner blade instead of the can opener. It's my favourite knife in the woods.
Good video, and a very nice old cross Farmer! It's discountinued since 1999 I believe, it's becoming harder and harder to find, I would say it's more of a collectors item already. If I had one, I would probably just put it into my collection, but I'm sure it's also fun to use it. For bushcraft / survival, I think a Harvester or an Electrician Plus would be a better choice. They have the same tools but the can opener is replaced by a small hawkbill / sheepsfoot blade, a very useful backup for the main blade. If you don't have any cans with you, the can opener doesn't make sense anyway, as you said, too. The small screw driver tip is also rather useless in the forest (but I use it all the time in an urban environment).
I like the pioneer as well for a bushcraft blade minus the saw. There are still farmers on the market just not with the old cross. I believe the silver alox is very available. I will check out the harvester! Thanks for watching!
Yes, sure, I was not clear enough: the Farmer is still available of course, but with the new Vic logo instead of the old cross since 2000. I carry a blue Farmer myself. :) For bushcraft, I believe I would go with the Electrician Plus because it has no key ring (I find that more convenient when using the knife) and because that sheepsfoot blade seems to be sturdier than the hawkbill blade on the Harvester.
For making nachos? Oh, notches, yes of course. I just got one in Mint Green Alox. Even though I would probably carry my Leatherman Wave, the SAKs are beauties, and I really like them. Cheers.
NICE! So why is it that I have never heard of the Farmer before today? (rhetorical of course) It certainly looks like it would be a great all around knife for use in pretty much most of the things that will come up for bushcrafting. Thanks for not assuming that we all know about that knife and sharing it with us, cause there are some guys like me who didn't know.
Nice video buddy. You might want to check out the victorianox handyman, it's the best bushcrafty tool in my opinion. I do quite a bit of wood whittling and carving and mostly only use the handyman. You can get a good sanded finish with the file too. I'd like to see what you'd make of it
I found one of these in the dirt at the park. It was caked in mud. Brought it home rinsed it and then cleaned with WD 40 and it looks and acts brand knew. I love it.
Nice video! It is the old version of alox farmer, cool! Are the lays made of copper? Some of the old knifes had layer being made of copper, then victorinox replaced them with aluminum.
Love the farmer but if only they would have it with a pen blade instead of the can opener that would be the best pocket knife I use the 7 best thing so fare
Lies. I use em rough and the plastic never cracked. Where as the alox holds a dent and you can't remove the scale. You can get titanium swiss bianco scales with all the slots for the scale tools.
Famer the best bushcraft knife ever i have and it's very handy

Love my Farmer. Super handy.
Great Video! SAK are rock solid camp knives, in my humble opinion. My Trekker and Tinker are always with me in the woods.

I keep a Classic in my med kit

Doesn't it ruin the edge on the awl using it to strike the ferro rod....?
Not really but it can be sharpened
I like the hiker better but Farmer is really nice! Thumbs up again!
beautyful Old Cross

+jason thomas I am always up for a new knife. I will look into. Thanks!

How is the edge retention on the main blade?? It looks like a sweet knife!
+cody dickinson so far so good
The Prepared Wanderer awesome! No chipping or anything?
Nice video! It is the old version of alox farmer, cool! Are the lays made of copper? Some of the old knifes had layer being made of copper, then victorinox replaced them with aluminum.
If it's like my old Pioneer they would be Brass. Copper would oxidiz and turn green. Not good. I don't think they ever used Copper.
Non locking main blade?
Correct

what is the song?
media hora viendo una rana!!!
