Hello my lovelies!
Here’s a new melody for you called ‘The Crime of Heart ’.
In the spirit of a true detective, let’s try solving a murder mystery!
A renowned chemist is found dead in his lab. There is no clear evidence except a piece of paper lying by the body. The paper is blank other than the name of five elements scrawled across it hastily:
- Nickel
- Carbon
- Oxygen
- Lanthanum
- Sulfur
The guard reported that three people visited the chemist that day - his sister, Laura; his colleague, Nicolas; and his wife, Tessa. The criminal was arrested immediately. Who was it?

Criminal is part-time, Villain is a career! 😁
I love how we totally miss that if we apply the "movie villain" definitions to real life, it would probably encompass 95% of politicians and every single wealthy person, most likely.
✅ Provable, consistent flouting of the law
✅ Can commit crimes without lasting repercussions
✅ Exploitation of underlings
✅ Use influence to target people with whom they disagree
✅ Fanbase of "minions" that do their bidding and are convenient scapegoats
The villains are here and they're not "tortured souls" and "relatable;" they're evil.
Where the cuss are the heroes, then?
As to "how does one become a villain?"
I think it's empathy. If you never teach it, and a person fails to learn it from experience, if they live in a society that rewards the LACK of empathy, and calls having it pejorative things, i think the minute a person stops caring about the people around them (whether they know them or not), that person has become a villain. They will attack and emotionally damage anyone around them.
Add money (and therefore power) and now you have a villain with the means to damage the world.

"Take your time, there you are. Gather your bearings, yes. Now, there you are.
I regret to inform you that your earthly cares are no longer your concern, for you have shucked off your mortal coil and are beginning your journey to the afterlife."
You glance around at the gloomy, rainy night. There is a large manor within walking distance. Anyone else might think the worst, but this is your preferred aesthetic.
"Now, in order to move on and determine where you belong, there is a test you must first pass."
"A test?"
"Yes," the man in the gray suit consults a clipboard. "According to this you liked to read..." he glances around, "Ah! I see it now, yes. It appears your test is to solve the murder mystery that is about to occur up at the manor yonder."
A blood-chilling shriek pierces the night from the direction of the house, as if on cue. You begin to smile, tentatively of course, as every detective knows they should never show how much they enjoy a good murder, but it's impossible to keep the sparkle from your eye as you look back at your guide.
"Is this real? Am I already in heaven?"
A slow, indecipherable grin spreads across his face.
"That depends entirely... on you," he says in a much darker tone as he hands you a case, then disappears.
