One of the most unapologetic comedians of our age. Him and Norm. Top of his game in the 80's. RIP, Sir.
Always so unafraid of failing. Commits all the way every time.
I'm not sure I could get into his sort of humour, but this is the thing about him I find really admirable.
NO DOUBT. Incredible.
I love it when he starts to fail, it’s like throwing fuel on a fire. The aristocrats killed me.
If only he was remotely funny, think some sort of mental illness going on.
Well said!
Simply one of the most original comic minds of the modern age. His abrasive, abstract, stream-of-conscious rants opened the door of surrealistic stand-up comedy in ways unseen before. His commitment to his own dont-care-if-it-fails aesthetic was a genuine fearlessness unlike any other performer. He went beyond blue comedy & took it to a new level with The Aristocrats. He found ways to make you laugh by embodying the absurdity of life with the sheer racket of his unforgettable voice and his most wickedly hysterical laugh.
The first rule of comedy is funny and Gilbert was always that. Like Joan Rivers, Gilbert didn't give a f**k
Beautifully said RIP Gilbert Gottfried
We will never forget you Gilbert. RIP
I will never forgive him. Rip you little rat
Gilbert should get way more credit for the type of comedy he did. He paved the way for people like norm to do 12 minute jokes
And now they're doing 12 minute jokes together
troll
Maybe I am just getting older, but he is phenomenal! I don't remember Gilbert being this drop dead hilarious! I do remember his 3-name land joke when I was a kid and thought that was hysterical. What a brilliant comedy mind!
@@toddsalkowski448 three name land is soooo funny, like a stupid Twilight zone episode.
It's like old school as fuck but also insane. I feel like I'm on acid the way he goes into different shit
"He's eating the hard black wax....he's eating it" True Story. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gilbert is an absolute genius. A national treasure. His podcast has been the best thing in media for at least the last 5 years. They don't make em like that anymore... also, they never did.
That's very true. God broke the mold. After thousands of years of making Jews with the Gilbert Godfrey mold even God was growing sick of listening to them. It happened one day on God's favorite cloud when his last Gilbert Godfrey creation looked at God and said, "Do you like parrots?".
God picked up the mold and broke it in his bare hands, then cast the splintered, golden fragments from heaven into hell whereupon it melted in a vast Abysmal lake of superheated fire where dolphins roasted on black metal spits, surrounded by succubus, male demons with large penises and an upside down crucifix. Now we're finally down to our last Godfrey and there'll never be another.
One fucking word... COMEDY
I used to love his podcast.
I must have listened to this upload close to 50 times at least. It always lifts my spirits
Good stuff back in the day when late night comedy was a thing. May late night comedy rest in peace
i'm a young guy who appreciates this kind of stuff and i'm sad the current generation has no attraction to old late night and movies and such
No, no, let's resurrect it!
@@roberthouston3824 everything's in cycles..
Conan is the only one worth watching
U can't say anything anymore. People r lookin to ruin guy's careers for friggin jokes
RIP Gilbert Gottfried. Enjoyed every moment of listening to your horrific voice. ♥️
Thank you so much for posting this. I was in high school for most of these. My dad used to tape Dave each night, and we’d watch it the next day. I have been looking for the one with Ike and Tina, and the land of the three-named people forever! Good lord I love those bits. And, I love his podcast! RIP Gilbert. You will be missed.
Back in the 80's me and my Dad used to watch a few Letterman episodes on Sunday morning that we taped on VHS earlier that week --- we both thought Dave was a lot funnier than Carson and had a more laid back vibe on his show --- great memories of being a teen!
Speaking of lost Gilbert jokes. Has anyone seen or found the one he did about Mel Gibson, shortly after he was pulled over for DWI and had his infamous rant??
You had a cool dad
love when gilbert suddenly ends his act at 22:10, the camera pans to dave, you see him quickly put out a cigg and smoke just billowing from his desk
Good catch. That’s hilarious.
Imagine being in the audience. It's like a black mass or some terrible thing but you smell the incense of tobacco and know chaos is abound and something funny or interesting is going to happen. That'd be pretty cool.
Yuck.
This was the mid-80s. Baseball managers were furiously sneaking smokes away from the prying eyes of Bob Costas and Tony Kubek on NBC
Gilbert has become my latest preoccupation. His is truly an exceptional mind
Rest in peace Gilbert..he passed away on Dave's 75th Bday..April 12,2022
When I first saw Gilbert Gottfried on Letterman, he did something to me that some of the best absurdist comedians did. He broke my brain. I have never recovered and thats fine.
Wow man, get better
Who are the other comics that did that?
The thing about the ending of a bit is low key brilliant. It's true, and yet extremely awkward. I think his leaning into the awkwardness is why it really works.
Rest in peace, Gilbert Gottfried. February 28, 1955 - April 12, 2022.
Required viewing for anyone who wants to do standup.
Step 1: Find your voice, Step 2: Destroy your voice
A genius gone. My hat is off to you, Sir. R.I.P.
LEGENDS never die. Here we are still treasuring him ❤
"Playing pool with a dead turtle" 😂
RIP Gilbert. Thanks for the laughs.
His voice got more and more Gilbert Gottfried-ish as he got older.
thebeatnumber not his real voice
Thank you for this compilation. Innovative, fearless legend. RIP 🖤
Unapologetically unique & bizarre. His impersonations top notch. This was a masterful performance piece.
Gilbert and Norm. My two favourite US comedians.
Brave, they zig when others zag. Totally committed to the joke - every time.
When you watch enough of them - that is part of the appeal. Stubborn, un self conscious commitment to their art.
Gilbert - you gotta carry the flag now.
Give us another 25 years at least buddy!
Norm's Canadian
@@kwamewoodpower Yeah. My bad. Sentiment stays the same though.
This is a badly aged comment....☹️
Gilbert you misheard him. He said 25 years not 25 days!
Thanks, Don. Gilbert is the G.O.A.T. and love the fact that Letterman never knew how to deal with him.
mangasky7 nobody does lol
Stern did during his glory years; now Gilbert's not even allowed on his show.
when does he ever, anyways? that guy is rude and not funny at all
@@anarchism who are you.are you on tv or in a mivie. Do people know who you are. What are you known for
What a fucking retarded argument
Thank you for having this here, Don.
This is the first time I've seen the Nostradamus bit since seeing it live on Dave back in the 80s. I've been doing that one along with "boy, this is a long time ago!" for decades. It's great to revisit these routines because he got too much of a reputation for vulgar/shock comedy by the end, when at heart he was really a surrealist madman.
I had never heard of these old stand up bits I hate to admit that I didn’t realize he was capable such an original comedic voice. Everyone knows his voice but this stream of consciousness thing he’s got going is so unique. A true laugh craftsman.
I saw Gilbert Gottfried in person since I saw his stand up comedy. I said his Problem Child 2 line, "Screw you, pal! I can talk that way to anyone however I want!" He laughed over this.
Ive never seen him in person, and i treasure those moments.
3:20 Creepy how he mentions a Stephen King novel and the vhs glitch turns him into Satan himself...!
i really rather enjoyed the quality of that bit
yep
This morning, out of the blue, I thought about the bit with the cheese rind. I wracked my brain to remember the comedian who did it. I'm glad I finally remembered it was Gilbert Gottfried and found this video to reexperience it. He was so hilarious.
Gilbert is an 'acquired' taste... an alphabet soup of odd/off-color musings that piques your interest with unusual subjects and then dances all around them without ever delivering a knockout punchline. I can't even imagine what else this quirky man could ever do but comedy. He eventually found his natural home in bawdy roasts... vulgarity being the icing on his cake. Never know what to expect from him, but you know it'll be different. God help you if you even try to watch his act while drunk or stoned.
Gilbert is one of the funniest, most off-the-wall comedians EVER.
Hard to believe his career was largely derailed because of one politically incorrect joke. He’s still hilarious in his podcast though (Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast) that I just discovered.
What was the joke he said?
@@TrudeaisaWEFpuppet He joked about the nuclear reactor tragedy in Japan so he lost the Afleck Duck ads voiceover gig because the company was Japanese owned
@@gavinbrando8255 no he joked about the tsunami. nice try playing expert punk
@@jaredrapaport I never really had a problem that they wanted to let him go for that joke. I had a problem that they lacked the integrity to let him go, and instead had a voice actor imitating his voice to continue making commercials and leaving people who didn't know with the impression that it was Gilbert. That is a level of hypocrisy that I am not prepared to accept.
Proving my theory yet again...The world just was more fun when comics told Norman Fell jokes. Great post. thks.
Huge Gilbert fan, and his Podcast is fantastic.
"When a turtle is not moist, it's not anything."
I loved the turtle bit! Loved it. Saw it the first time it aired and have never forgotten it. I was just thinking about it the other day. It was the bit that made me decide I like this guy
Kierkegaard
Thank you so much for posting. I've been re-visiting Norm MacDonald clips from my youth and needed to re-watch Gilbert's 'Turtle' bit which I had on a long lost VHS from my youth. Both fearless comics.
I remember watching that dead pet turtle bit live, I swear I laughed so hard I thot I was gonna die from not breathing
Me too. That bit was the first time I saw him, and I was floored.
@@guyincognito7165 yeah, it was my first time seeing him as well. I made a point of remembering his name that night, and I always kept an eye out for him on TV after that. I remember seeing him not too long after that on some awards show, he was presenting some award with Viki Lawrence, he accused her of pointing at him while screaming “JEW!” That might not sound funny, but he had tears running down my cheeks from laughter. She looked like she wanted to run away and hide. But it was hilarious. Poor guy, he was something else, and he will be missed. A true original. I always felt he wasn’t given the exposer he should have been. There were some real pioneering comics in those days, people who liked to push the envelope. Andy Kaufman was another one who could get me rollin on the floor laughing, like Gilbert could

“Steve! Steve! I have one of those phones that goes flat against your face.”
Audience: 😂
Kids today: 🤔
Gilbert was always fairly funny but he became interesting when he faced ridicule. One of those guys that put himself into the corner but knew he could thrive at it. That cannot be said about most or any other comedian. A true comedic fighter, trouble is, he has small fists!
Here after his passing! What a legend!!!!!
How can you watched the two named boy and be unhappy? Gilbert was such a gift, we didn't deserve him 💔
I LOVE GILBERT GOTTFRIED! HES THE MAN! THANKS FOR POSTING DON!!👍
Gilbert does an excellent Seinfeld impersonation.
He kind of looks like Seinfeld at whatever age he was in this video
@@Cognitively_m_paired_4_Kamala It's a mystery why

That 3 named people bit is an impressive piece of work. Like a comedy Gullivers Travels.
Actually it is
I helped him find some clothes for his kids at H&M when I worked there years ago. Really nice guy.
I love Gilbert, thanks for this.
"The one time i have a picture taken, Hitler walks into it!" 😂
I started laughing REALLY loud at 43.50 😄😆😅. I have always known about this guy, and of course, recognising that voice. But never really appreciated him until lately.
Not super famous in Norway.
Great upload, very entertaining 😄. Thanks.
I first learn of him from USA’s “Up All Night” in the 90’s when he’d do wraparound segments for raunchy B movies.s
I think their brothers…watch His real voice videos sounds exactly alike.
The band performing Shuggie Otis' Strawberry Letter 23 for GG ! Thanks Don.
It was brilliant of Letterman to bring legendary comics on. I loved Gilbert since USA Up All Night. Brilliant comic!!
He refused to take advice from other people. It worked out magnificently. Advice is antithetical to genius.
28:40 That little laugh Gilbert gives when Letterman fucks up the set-up for the Casablanca bit is priceless.
Seriously demented. Love it.
RIP Mr. Gottfried. Gone too soon.
23:20 - "a strange and funny comedian...and he certainly is strange" was used as the opening line of the Gilbert Gottfried documentary.
Was a really great documentary. He is a very interesting person that almost no one really knows even though he’s been in the public eye since 1985.
I've just watched the first performance of this video, and I'm ready to say five stars, already. I can imagine a young Jim Carrey staying up late to watch this and being inspired.
We will miss you Gilbert. You were one of a kind.
ill never forget seeing this live when i was a kid... thank you 🙏
Very original. It’s like proto-meta-anti-comedy. Experimental, and traditionally funny at the same time. Nothing like him since.
love Gilbert! Thank you for posting this 😁
Dude said "North West Mounted Police". Not Mounties. Not RCMP. That's really interesting. I wouldn't have thought too many Americans outside of a University History faculty would be able to pull that out of their hat.
Hilarious that he does the Moby Dick joke a second time but fubs the premise, then just commits as somehow manages to make it work anyway.
Rest in Peace, Gilbert. Make God laugh.
Don, if you’re ever in south Florida I’m buying all the drinks you want!
Rest in powerful peace 🙏

Thanks as usual! I hope we also get a Jeff Altman collection down the line. One of my faves, mainly because Dave just loved it when he was on.
Sure thing, Jeff Altman was a standout, wasn't he ?... He was so flip, it was just great fun !!
@@mellotronage7073 My favorite Jeff Altman punchline during a Letterman appearance (imitating a male flight attendant during choppy weather), "Relaaaaa-aaax. We're landing. We're la-aaaanding." Would get him crucified these days but by gawd i carried that around in my head for decades to retrieve when I needed a laugh.
both he and Mitch Hedberg performed 'eyes closed'
Thank you for posting this.
“Well, that’s it.” Is the best way to end a set
I always liked that Gottfried was played on by either the "Thicke of the Night" or 1980-81 "SNL" themes
On Gilbert's podcast, Paul mentions that he gave Gilbert a choice of either one, and Gilbert said to use both. Paul said that might take too long and apparently Gilbert said, "it's OK, I'll wait." (I might be mis-remembering this).
Love the Moby Dick bit, but I have to be this guy; it was a harpoon coming loose from the whale that sheared off Ahab's leg. The whale didn't bite him. 🤣🤣🤣
whats the small explosion at 9:09 about? woah. also, thanks for another great collection!
Letterman pulled the plug on late night talk shows as he left. Gilbert rocks too!
This was really entertaining, thanks. The Second appearance you can see him trying his ass off on a somewhat cold audience, but he's getting mildly desperate so keeps jumping to material he already knows. At times you can see him "flannelling" as Billy Connolly would say, filling in inbetween coming up with the next bit, and trying a little bit desperately to get to the next bit. It's like a bit of a dance, to tickle the audience to get them to a proper laugh/orgasm point. He gets them in the end, but it takes him some time. He hasn't the same smoothness he has nowdays, and knows he only has a small amount of time on Letterman to make an impression. It's when he goes full surreal that it really kicks off.
Tony Curtis talking to Gavin MacLeod - holy hell, I don't know how I missed that one back in the day.
16:35 the band is playing Kingdom Come by The Band
Earlier that year their pianist/singer Richard Manuel killed himself, a lovely tribute from Paul n the gang.

Early Gilbert Gottfried looked a dehydrated Jerry Seinfeld.
Thank You, Don Giller.
One thing I’ve never connected before… when I was a kid, I had a cassette of Abbott & Costello doing “Who’s On First”. Gilbert doing “NATURALLY!” at the end of the second set is totally ripped from that.
"Odd and funny"
Perfect combination ❤
At the time Gilbert was obviously pissed they gave away his big moment in the film, but that scene is iconic. 29:39
As I binge watch on Gottfried ,I will say I first heard of him when he was a guest and he kept saying "David Letterman!". I don't know why UA-cam didn't have all his videos available until after he died.I tried finding them before.I will look at this one.
I uploaded this compilation three years ago, in February 2019.
RIP Gilbert much love a funny comedian in the 80's & 90's

I thought Gilbert was well-known in NYC clubs before and after his SNL stint... strange it took him almost 4 years to get onto LN. (He would have been perfect doing what Steve Fessler did in the premiere, for example). A long time back, someone else on YT had posted the first appearance and the sound was awful to the point that it sounded like the audience was bored. Thanks for posting this; they clearly loved Gilbert.
Tell Norm and Bob Saget we miss them Gilbert. RIP.
