Hi guys you can try to use saturator to bring up the harmonics in your 808, so for ex. you boost drive by 5dB then make output -5dB. You can also scoop out some attack from 808 using envelopes to make space for your kick, Always start with good sounds first then you will have less headache mixing, regards!
I like that
Do you have a reference video for us to watch visually? It would be great if so
Adding "Fatter & Pressure after the EQ changes the EQ. Put them before!
Thanks!!!
every time i hear Adam’s voice on a tutorial, i’m like fuck yes.
Question: Do you use side chain compression with your Kick & 808 or will the mirroring EQ kind of substitute for that?
Good question
Just curious, what name are you credited under for production credits?
This makes sense to me, good video and ppl are leaving some good additional tips in the comments section
I prefer to do the opposite. That way the kick is more in the forefront and the 808 backs it. Cut the 808 and boost the kick (Lower end). I also make my kick mono appose to stereo
KiddahDirt Interesting. I guess it doesn't hurt to try different approaches.
KiddahDirt I do like my kick to sit in front too bruh.
Kick should always be mono anyways, its always in the center...
KiddahDirt Agreed!!!
Yeah it’s all about your approach. I would prefer mono as well and have my kick in the front. Then side 808 to the kick once I finish Eq and compression. But it’s all about your vibe. Everyone is different
I really appreciate your tutorial. It's super informative and you get right to it thank you
err, you've just sacrificed headroom by boosting everything, your levels went up, (i think you even red lined) - let me guess, you're going to squash everything with some brick wall limiting, therefore losing all the dynamics in your mix right?
steveehardcore calm down. He only boosted 4 db. It's not that much. You know how much more he could've boosted it?
steveehardcore also it was the snare that made it clip. Get your facts straight.
calm down steve
xPBKM4x so this isn’t a bad way to eq your 808s?
Will you guys shut the hell up with the calm down shit, damn.
Your awesome for sharing your skills!thanks!
You make the most helpful videos dude.
Thanks. I try this with waves F6 -RTA. Took mud out .... my kicks popped and subs sounded great.
Question: When you first EQ'd the 808, you boosted where the peak was by using the analyzer. BUT, you only had 1 808 note. If you are playing different keys of the 808, are you going to boost every single peak that happens?
side note: where can we find your music? do you have soundcloud or anything like that?
I had the same question in mind :)
aguafiesta69 Good question. That will require some automation. Did anyone try to boost every single peak?
+aguafiesta69 The way you can get around this is to make a new channel for every 808 note you're going to play and EQ each one individually rather than making a mess and EQing one channel with every note :) !
Honestly, your best bet is to just use side-chain compression on the 808 with the kick as the trigger so every time the kick hits, it lowers the 808 by a few DB. Easiest and safest way.
Rollout 45-50Hz (High Pass) at 48/Oct for a smooth curve
Boost or cut between 80-100Hz (mirror the kick and 808 to make a nice fit and still knock with no muddy BS)
*Change both Kick and 808 from Stereo to Side Only Processing EQ*, you'll be glad you did to clean up the low end
Use DUCKOUT to sidechain your 808 to the kick......
FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!
great straight to the point tutorial.
Great video! Thanks for sharing, you always explain you video in great detail,it's greatly appreciated.
+Tim Datailor thanks. I always try to be concise and to the point. enjoy the videos :)
That would be cool if their was a mirror mode. Also, if you know you're going to do this you could just eq the kick first and drag it over to your 808 before doing the mirror just to save a few steps
Amazing video this is the first thing I do for mixing
Adam thanks so much for these tutorials. Can you tell me what you’re using for the kick here? Appreciate all the knowledge, you’ve increased my learning curve in DAW tremendously man 🙏🏼.
I doesn't make sense how you boost the peaks of the 808s & Kicks because that clutters your headroom therefore you can't get potential loudness. You also don't need the high end of the kick because this is not dance music, Try decrease about 3db from your peaks for more headroom, You can use sidechain compression as well because each 808 not played changes the KHz of the 808.
Do a video on the difference between a sub bass and and 808?!
NICE!! What kind of EQ plugin are U using.... and what EQ frequencies would U suggest to get a fat bassline track? Thanks!!
thanks. great tutorial. quick question, is it possible to make the kick sound phatter with logics own tools and not any 3rd party plugins?
This was really helpful. thanks man!
thanks a lot very nice tutorial really help me. what about compression ? how do you do that ?
Thanks for the tip. Super useful !!
QUestion: I saw you used a es2 synth on the same track as the 808. how did you use the synth on the 808 track to add that little touch? wouldn't these normally be separate instruments? it seems like you used the es2 as an effect.
Thank you again for this tutorial. Very easy step by step to follow. Quick question though: What is your opinion on using a sidechain compression on the 808's causing them to 'duck out of the way' of those kicks? Would I essentially be achieving the same results or no?
It depends what you going to use the 808s for. If you want to thicken up your kick then it's probably not a good idea. If you wanted to use the 808 for a bassline then it would be a good idea.
+imamusicmogul Gotcha...appreciate the info bro!!
I'm sorry for intruding but when you say thicken up your kick do you mean letting the 808 make the kick sound thicker? And when you say bassline do you mean using the 808 strictly as a bassline(meaning that there will be moments in the song where my kick plays solo without the 808)
saved my time thanks a looooooooot
U DA MAN ADAM
Love this guy
how about using a little ducking effect on the 808 kick to create a little head room?
You mean sidechaining?
Thanks for the knowledge homie.
Hey Homie, did you make that 808 inside the plugin itself, or its a sample you dragged inside of the ES2 plugin?
+HotBoyRob1105 the 808 was made in ES2 from scratch - of Im not mistaken its the same one used in this tutorial I put out. ua-cam.com/video/mx2xVaYhOYY/v-deo.html
1). Would you post the ES2 credentials for your 808 preset?
2). Your kick and 808 are still clashing at the end of the video.. boosting that 808 is not necessary.. it's gonna clip in the mastering process
thanks man !! Love it !
do u know how i can make it sound the same as yours but without purchasing plugins from waves
Could you please make tutorial about 909 or acoustic kick drum with gated sine wave?? i hope your tutorial will be the best. Thanks.
U guys should learn sidechain compression.. Its much better
I been trying it again lately and from what I've experienced since last year is that it seems best when applying to bass lines. Ima try this method on my 808s
yea its what your suppose to use sidechain for bro. make sure u use your graph on the compressor so u can see whats going on and switch through what type of compressor it is and u can see the differences
+Justyin The Composer Ay I been getting the hang of it watching a guy called mrdifferenttv.
+Justyin The Composer ok thx for the tips
I think mixing both techniques would be best.... Find the best part of your sound with the eq and then further make them distinct with the sidechain compression
question: thanks for the tutorial video, btw i have a question, in terms of ur video.
what if i use side chaining in this case ? is it different role in this video between EQ and side chaining ?
2:55 Thought I was watching a movie 😂
got an updated video on something like this?
Hey Mogul, this was a great video by the way! I was wondering if there is any way to save your custom 808s and kicks to Logic's sound library?
+Hit Maker Yes - you could create a EXS24 kit with your custom 808s and kicks. Watch this video how to do just that: ua-cam.com/video/hCLHxp1dW_M/v-deo.html
Hey Man I would like to know whether sidechaining the kick with 808 is necessary???!!!! cheers!!!
+Skyzo Official It's completely up to you and the sound you are going after. In want circumstance exactly were you thinking about?
+imamusicmogul I am making an arabic trap and i have one layer kick and a sub808 which I made it with massive (env 1 has a pitch of 45 which means the 808 has an intergrated kick already which I dont like) instead I want my layer kick to punch through the 808 in the beggining and the 808 following afterwards the layer kick as a part of the "tail". If you have skype or any other way of communication please let me know. Cheers for the awesome tutorial and sorry for the bother. Looking forward to your reply.
it's all about what samples you use. the stuff I got you get nothing like this in lightyears :P
Do notes matter when it comes to that 808?
\can you please make a tutorial on how to mix a hi hat l and have it sound like those hit hat I'm hearing on radio now a days
do you know how to cut the overlapping frequencies on a 808 using ES2 in Logic pro x?? My sub bass keeps bleeding into my next track.
do you have both those tracks sending to an effect like reverb? If so, you will still hear the 808 in the reverb, even if that track not solo'd, if you have the reverb solo'd that track is being sent to. Use a different bus send for each of the two tracks and you won't get that effect dude.
Is there anyway to do this on an ipod ? No computer
it helped thanks!!
what plugging would you use in logic to make the kick fatter if you don't have the wave plugging
lousina paul you could use logics built in SubBass plugin that will add low end air and thump to your kicks which in turn will make them instantly fatter.
can you name a logic subbass plugin please
+lousina paul its literally called SubBass...go to plug ins and go to Specialized
The channel EQ could well do with a volume-meter. To see what altering ex.4db translates to, depending on what freq's are being altered.
how do you narrow the bass boosted note in garageband 10?
also worth mentioning using binaural panning for your 808
How can u tell the level is too high because it's in the red how high do u let it go in the mix
HOW DO YOU GET THE WAVES IN AUDIO UNIT?? PLEAS HELPP
Thank you !
what 808 do u use?
quality tutorial
All you did to the 808 was boost its volume in two different ways. Would have sounded almost exactly the same if you just increased the level.
Good video, thanks for the knowledge'
Nicely done ;-)
Why not side-chain the 808 to duck when the kick to cut through. Adjust the attack n release. As well as dialing the frequency you can want to duck.
good turorial thanks
Awesome technique
😉
Thanks Bro! :D
Thank You, Friend
Tutorial for that melody in the intro?
hello, this is unrelated to this video..but how do I get a nice hi hat swing? I mostly produce 70bpm hip hop tracks
Human Green just move the midi around to give it a swing and adjust the velocity on some of the hats
Awesome video! I feel like you could have done this quicker with a compressor though? :l
Where can I get the 808?
Thanks bro.
what the hell software is this??
Very cool.
Title should be 'How to Eq a weak ass kick and 808'
bro when i low cut the kick around 30 , kick db goes from 12 to 8, any idea?
So? What is the problem?
Yop, nice video reaaly like it, can you upload u'r HQ 808 kicks samples ? (if you wanna share), mine are in bad quality, thx in advance bro
***** sometimes I use 808 samples and sometime I create my own. In this video I am using a preset I made for a custom 808. Watch this video here to learn how to make your own 808. ua-cam.com/video/mx2xVaYhOYY/v-deo.html
Alright, thanks bro
Very helpful
Man this is something not TO DO with you 808... high passing ur 808 is almost useless first.... If you have a good 808 sample you should not have any boost to do.... just mixin the kick in a way that it fits with the 808 is better... high pass the kick if nessesary ... parralel compression or transient designin.. and gettin the thin Q boost is stupid... each different note fundamental frequency is different... ur better just une parralle processing to boost the tone of it if it is not enough. or a boost the lows around 30hz or 60hz with a vintage type EQ if you sample is weak in the low end. (vintage type EQ have a whole different curve than this suggested narrow boost.
Genius!
where did you get your 808s?
+Christian Hurtado (HoriZEN) I believe this one is from a sample pack although I don't remember which one. But you can make custom 808s. Watch this video - ua-cam.com/video/mx2xVaYhOYY/v-deo.html
+Christian Hurtado (HoriZEN) You can buy Reason 8.3 and make any type of 808 kick you can imagine through THOR. Throw on some distortion and you got your speaker rattling 808 kick.
Thank you!!!!!
how do you go ahead without having a head?
Never cut the low end of an 808 like that
Not true. You can’t hear any frequencies below 25 hz in any speaker so it is very very necessary to cut the unneeded low end so your over all mix doesn’t sound muddy as fuck
@@brianscottblowers3306 well if you CAN'T HEAR any frequencies below 25hz then why even bother cutting them since humans can't detect them??
hey ik this is stupid, i only have garageband can you make tutorial on how to make a good track on thre
just torrent a cracked logic pro x and save you some troubles :)
Yea garageband is an easier version then logic pro, logic pro is just more advanced but same setup n controls like GB
no sidechaining??
my 808s only have that good shake with headphones and not speakers
plz re-name the title Put - Logic Pro X in to it.. I have use'd LPX before and ditten find much for help.. and I think this a good example.. have a nice day :)
Sometimes I sidechain the 808 to let the kick come through !
how is ur garageband so complicated looking compared to others.
+Bnice Entertainment this is Logic Pro X
What EQ is this?
Can I get this in ableton?
Where is the 808 option on GB
Just like puzzle
My kick and 808s still sound like crap, the kick or the 808 is just distorting bruh.
909 606 707?????
I should have sent you my Logic Pro project for this video man, it's harder to learn when the beat is poo, even when it's only an example
BIG2hats you are welcome to send me some session if you like for me to use them in tutorials and want me to cover some topics.
Hey quick question, what's the difference from an 808 and a kick? I know there both low frequency but like, how do either of them function? If that makes any sense
The difference is that the kick is used as what it is, a percussion, so it has attack, punch, and very fast release and decay, while the 808 is used as a bass, it is longer, smoother and it contains sub-bass frequencies, that you shouldn't cut, because some car subwoofers without filters can still move air, we can't hear sound but these subs can still reproduce as "air", or pressure. IMHO you should't high-pass an 808 since it contains this type of frequencies.
why do you call a synth bass "808"?
side chain is way easier and takes like 30 seconds to do
Kick attack at 124hz? yeah right...
