    2 strokes are great, but don't hold your breath for a comeback, or huge R&D from Yamaha. I'm glad the YZ125 got a makeover and the 250 got some updates, but the writing on the wall seems obvious to me. I wouldn't be surprised to see the end of Yamaha's 2 stroke lineup by the late 2020's TBH. They're pretty much impossible to green sticker, which means you won't even be able to ride one on public land in California, and I'd bet other states are going to start becoming more strict with offroad emissions as well. Sucks man. 2 strokes will always have a special place in my heart. My first bike was a YZ85, so many fond memories on that bike.

    I love my 2018 yz250, I ride enduro on it. Have over 220 hours on the stock piston and sparkplug.
    Before anyone buys a 4 stroke, thing to consider is repair costs.
    Look into the price of a new head complete with valves n seals and gaskets set cylinder, piston kit, and timing chain, then price the comparable 2 stroke rebuild. Then be honest with urself and how much extra money you have for a rebuild ever 60 hours on the 4 stroke or 100 hours on the 250 2 stroke, 60 on a 125 2 stroke. Enduro riding double the rebuild time because your not tapped into the rev limiter all day like a mx track riden bike. In 41 years of dirtbikes, I've realized 2 stroke is best for my family. We just have to many bikes to afford 4 stroke race bikes. Thats the bottom line.

    All this needs is a STIC Super X carb. But only if you want power at 300 levels. I've got one on an old 200SX and it pulls new 250F's. I'm suddenly mixing it up with 450F's. To keep it in control, I run the slowest turn G2 throttle cam. On the tight trails it has unstoppable grunt and lofts the wheel in an instant. YAT No Choice

We fixed them and kept riding until we wanted a different bike, (which were getting really better every year till the 1986 production rule). They ride them until they break, and that can be all the life that bike will see if nobody ants to plunk 2 grand to fix it, (or figure how to do it).

      Your size matters, but I believe you would be very happy with a Honda (still the best quality), 4-stroke (bullet proof fun motors), trail bike that that is legal to ride the roads.
      The Honda XR line has a long history of great trail bikes with mild mannered but capable engines (and planet of mods for them too if you get more serious), and even pretty old used ones that have been take care of is not very risky. Having a good mechanic look at one with you is still a good idea though.
      You are smart,---not going for a MX race bike for your first bike. If you are under 180lbs, a XR250 is an excellent first bike. I think they still make a 350 too, but not sure if you are bigger.

Then someone said since they are slower let's have he AMA change the rules. We will take the 250 two strokes out of their division and put them in the 450cc division where they are less competitive. Just wanna chime in with something that I’ve thought about and ultimately led me to buy a 2 stroke.
    Are all the big names in moto riding 4 strokes? Yes. Are they the fastest on the track? Debatable, but I’d say yes. Are they the easiest to ride? Yes.
    But you know what a lot of those riders have, sponsors, mechanics, paychecks, factory support, etc.
    They have a team dedicated to rebuilding their 4 stroke. While I’m sure there’s 2 stroke riders getting the same treatment, it’s much more affordable and simpler for a privateer or the average Joe to live with and maintain a 2 stroke.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 4 місяці тому

      There is a much better reason that has to do with our and our kids future. When the 2-stroke were developed and took over the 4-strokes of the late 60's, they were developed by private companies, and using them decreased the cost of a bike just before the sport blew up in the USA, (10 times at least bigger than today in bike sales).
      The 4-stroke (and electric now) are pushed by a dictatorship called the EPA, forced on the industry. FORCE, as only communism knows.
      if we don't want to live under communism that is taking over the industries that more free people built,---we have to reject it, and the business it stole from us to fund itself.

    If one could say the YZ250 2-stoke has good bottom end power,---we have really never ridden many 250cc 2-strokes. It is about as soft down low as a 250cc MX bike has ever been. All top end power if you want to go fast. it is made to try to keep up on a MX track, which it won't do against 450's, and that makes the engine needing mods for off road, if you want good power for that. It is a bike that can be modified the way you want, but stock,--it is not really great at anything today. Too damn tall too. That was stupid.

    They aren't equals from a power standpoint. The two stroke fires every time, four stroke every other. The four stroke has 50% higher rpm. Thus, 250F's compare to 125's, not 250 two strokes. The 125 is a good bit lighter than the 250F. The only way to compare the two as race bikes is to put them into the hands of beginners.

    • @DoctorMotorcycle
      @DoctorMotorcycle 2 роки тому +1

      They're not that far apart, the years of development have closed the gap. A modern 250f with just an exhaust will put out 41-43 at the tire, a 250 smoker 46. It would only take a little headwork to match the power of a 250 2 stroke on a 250F, and I'd bet four strokes are only 3-5 years away from matching the power of the 250 2 stroke. A 500 two stroke makes about the same as a modern 450f does. 2 strokes are not making some grand comeback, they're too dirty in comparison to their 4 stroke bretheren and more people prefer to ride 4 strokes anyway.
      I love me a 2 stroke, don't get me wrong. In fact the only dirtbike I have in my garage right now is a KX125, but it's not 2007 anymore, four strokes have made a lot of progress.

    You are shifting so early you're not reaching the peak power. It's a difficult transition from a 4 stroke to a 2 stroke. The OEMs are still not trying to go cutting edge with the 2 strokes. The original thing was to have the 125 2C compete with the 250 4C. Same thing with the 250/450. The 4 strokes have greatly advanced so the formula no longer works. A 175cc and 330cc would be competitive with 4 strokes.
    With that said, the new 2 stroke 400 Yammie snowmobile has 65 hp.

    • @EarthSurferUSA

      Good point. It was said and widely believed that a 2-stroke of the same displacement of a 4-stroke would make twice the power of a 4-stroke.
      That still may be true in some forms of racing, (Honda does make a 90hp v-twin 250 2-stroke street bike engine), but not in MX anymore. The 2-stroke can make double the power still,---but not work well on a MX track. The 4-stroke engine, hooking up to the ground with less beats, allows more HP to be manageable,---but also deadly I am seeing, as people are dying on the track now. Cant sue the dictatorship EPA for that.

    Forget faster or slower, it comes down to noise. We have a nice patch of woods next to a farm roughly 1/3 of a mile from us. Since everyone has been going to 4 strokes you cannot hear anything. Twenty years ago when everyone was riding 2 strokes the noise was insane. To me, 4 strokes are a win win for kids and neighbors.

      What? 4 strokes are way louder. my ears ring from them with a helmet on when im standing behind one 2 strokes are just higher pitched thats all

      @@visionvfx. you’re probably right. I was thinking along the line of XR250, XR500 maybe an XL line which were very very quiet. I did go to several Supercross races several years ago and the bikes were deafening loud. Someone told me they were going through the gears at 12K rpms which is crazy. I often wonder what happens to an engine when a timing change or connecting Rod goes. The worse thing that happen to my Elsinore was that a ring cracked in half.

      2ts are louder up close, but the lower grumble from the 4t will travel much farther. In other words, the 2t is louder standing right next to it, but from a distance you will hear the 4t longer than you would the 2t.

      For MX tracks across the nation, the 4-strokes proved to be more loud, and the lower frequency travels through the air for longer distances.
      When the EPA forced the 4-stroke on the industry, all the sudden the track owners were getting complaints of noise that they have not had in decades.
      You are talking about nice little 4-stroke trail bikes. The 4-stroke race bikes, despite their garbage can size silencers, (more dangerous in a crash), are more loud than a well maintained 2-stroke.

      Really? All I see as an advantage is the fact that power from the 4-strokes hooks up to the ground better than racing 2-strokes. The price, complexity and damage to the market share (less people can buy more expensive bikes), has all but destroyed the sport for 9 out of 10 kids who used to be able to afford a bike, and grow the sport.
