“Enough to make a couple of them in case you mess up” come on James, you know woodworkers never make mistakes. There are dozens of channels that prove this.😂😂😂😂😂
I just ordered your kit. I've been planning on making one for some time, so since you have the kits, it will make it easier for me to actually do. thanks, and thanks for all your nice videos that I've been watching for a long time.
I think it would be a good idea to build two of these . One right handed , one left handed . At least that's my plan . When I encounter diving grain , just grab the other one . What are your thoughts ?
Usually the bottom of the groove doesn't matter if it's perfectly smooth or not. So historically speaking this is one that was only made for one direction. But if you want to more power to you. Twice the fun of putting them together.
I did a live series on that a wile ago. it was 4 live videos that people could build along to. here is the first one. ua-cam.com/video/D7FuG_xibBU/v-deo.html
@@WoodByWrightHowToany chance if selling just the iron? I have several would scraps about the right size for this project. Curly bits of this and that big enough for a grooving plane but not much else.
@@WoodByWrightHowToIt would be wonderful to have a dovetail plane too! I imagine it might be more complicated but it's one I've always admired but other than Pinie and Ulmia no one dares to make one
It's not a kit, but Paul Seller's poor man's rabbet plane is dead simple to make with some wood and a chisel. It was one of the first things I made when I started about 4 years ago and I still use it! There's a video on UA-cam that's easy to follow, too!
I did a series a while ago building a dovetail plane live. I think it was four live sessions it is relatively simple plane to make but you can't do a side exposed version like this so it takes a little bit more work. Not that much more though
Alright, I was debating about making this comment, but after that joke at the end, you deserve it. How about a 1/8 x 1/8 x 1/8 for those of us who make little boxes? (yes, I know this probably isn't feasible, but...) This does look like a really fun project, and hoo boy is it more affordable than purchasing a complete one of these suckers new!
@@WoodByWrightHowTo, Then the question becomes, "Where do I grind the 1/8" off of? The inside of the blade tip so the grove is a 1/4" from the edge, or the outside of the blade tip putting the grove 3/8" from the edge? [I don't doubt someone will do that. Why not? Spare blades are only $228.00 a dozen, he says with a Whiplash, Snidely.]
I had not watched WALL-E in quite a few years. Saw it again last night and it is even better than I remember. If you haven't watched WALL-E in a while you should give it another go. Thanks for the video James, your jokes are always groovy.

Hope you make some more plane kits
My kit arrived in the mail today! Can't wait to make it ... and make a tonguing plane as well.
Making your own tools feels very therapeutic! Great project this James, and very affordable too!

Thanks. Looking forward to seeing what you make. Don't have too much fun LOL
Great video!!! Thanks!!!
This is great James! I hope that you release more plane building or tool building kits.
Thank you Sir.🎉
Great for drawer sides
Nice project, thanks for showing!!
Beautiful work, James! It looks and works amazingly! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
8:54 i use Brouns paint, dilute to 33/33/33 (blo /paint of choice/turpentine ) : makes a cool « teinture ».
Groovy, man!
That looks cool, fab, and … well … groovy. ;-)
Thanks for sharing.
awesome tool work! Thanks!
Very nice kit, James. Thank you for sharing.
Great show thanks
I appreciate the price of your products . Not insane. I can actually afford them !
Priced well for someone to give as a gift - I always have trouble coming up with hints for my family so this can go on the list 😊
If you were making this on a table saw, would you run a 1/4” dado to full depth and then trim the edge off to make the shoulder?
That's probably what I would do.
Snide remark. Hope it helps.
so cool. so simple
Thanks James.
I can finally get into the groove
Snide remark ❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing that, I have the same but some how I lost the blade!
Groovy Dude !

3:04 best tip!
Do you happen to have a link to that depth gauge that you were using?
That was a favor given out at the Pacific Northwest tool collectors meeting 2 years ago. I do have a video making a depth gauge very similar to it.
Could you show how to make a dovetail plane? I can't find much about it
I did a live series on that a wile ago. it was 4 live videos that people could build along to. here is the first one. ua-cam.com/video/D7FuG_xibBU/v-deo.html
Okay, James. Recommend plane floats/where to get them, please?
Those are not cheap. Even the antique ones are expensive. But I use the ones from Red Rose Reproduction.
Groovy baby
Let's groove tonight 🎶
Nice project and it looks simple indeed.
I guess its counterpart is somewhat more complicated?
Not that much more. I did one of those a while ago but as a kid it would be significantly more as the ironwood almost double the price of the kit
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Gotta watch that spelcheqer. You may end up with a lot of kids.
got to love VTT
Very cool. How about a matching tongue plane?
I did a video on that years ago. But then maybe a fun kid to put together. It would cost more is that iron would be relatively expensive to produce
Nice channel.
Looking at that nice iron you include, how does one even purchase or obtain thin strips of hardened O1 tool steel like that?
I purchased the steel from McMaster, then cut it to shape and hardened and tempered it.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Wow cool. Hm! Thank you for the answer. That sounds hard. Well, I guess it is hard, but it also sounds difficult.
@@WoodByWrightHowToany chance if selling just the iron? I have several would scraps about the right size for this project. Curly bits of this and that big enough for a grooving plane but not much else.
That is a good idea. I just added it to the site
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Oh wow, awesome! Time to go place an order then.
Groovy
Can you recommend any Rabbet plane kits ?
As a kit I don't know of any. I might have to fix that.
@@WoodByWrightHowToI'd love to see a skewed rabbet kit, though I didn't know how much more advanced of a build that would be.

I thought about it, but the iron for that would more then double the price of the kit.
2:40 testing a new diamond stone ?
Yes. The plates from ZenWu
You know, I would love a build of a bell bottom plane.

Isn't a quarter by a quarter by a quarter groove only 1/4" long?
Quarter inch deep and wide groove set in a quarter inch from the bottom of the drawer.
what @alangknowles said
More tools, more tools!!!!
Where was I…!? New shop !?
We moved into the new place in february. It's been a fun ride

The only people that get that are the ones that actually read the intro caption.

That shape on the front is kind of traditional. I have some planes with that shape on the nose
Orbital Sanders are pointless.
yes they are indeed round, some vibrating sanders have a pointy tip though
