I recently discovered your channel. Best footage I have found. My girlfriend and I recently visited Glacier for the first time, got our feet wet with Iceberg lake and Scenic point. Siyeh and Flisnch look amazing. At a certain point do you leave a trail and climb up, scramble? PS Are you from MN, saw the Surly hat?
Awesome that you stumbled across the channel! I hope the videos are helping with your own adventures! Thanks for the kind comments. Yes, almost all summit pushes will eventually lead you off trail. The summit blocks usually are a maze/labyrinth of rock to navigate. I do TONS of research of any objective that I plan on doing. I use multiple apps and websites to help with that. The more you know the less shenanigans there tends to be at the summits. I always have at least 2 downloaded routes to follow just in case. Most apps I use have decent gradient indicators to help with not getting cliffed up. Start easy and work your way up as climbing takes time to get used to and good at. Elevation and exposure can be a tricky for each individual. All my routes can be found and downloaded on AllTrails. Search The Mountain Matt and you should be able to find it. Also, get 30% off an AllTrails annual subscription thru the link of any video description. And yes 😃 we’re from MN …. for now 🤣! Feel free to contact me if you any other questions, Cheers!

16 and 13. We've been training them for years now, pushing them a little more each season. Now they're scrambling and rock hopping like it's nothing. We tried to start them young enough so now they don't even realize how tough some of the adventures we are doing actually are🤣. Love your channel! I’m coming to glacier for the first time this august! We’re hoping to do Reynolds and Siyeh. We hike all kinds of class 3 scrambles in Washington where we live. Do you think Siyeh and reynolds will be ok for us? I keep worrying what if Montana mountains are different 🤣
The rock in Glacier is VERY loose shale. Just be prepared for that. Otherwise you should be fine if you have good experience route finding and climbing. I was out there last fall on Dragonstail which is right next to Reynolds and it was some of the loosest I’ve ever dealt with. There will be good goat trails going up each 👍🏼. Have a great time!
Nice videos (just came across your channel)!! Planning a Glacier trip for next year (Aug 2024) - can hardly wait for this beauty. What camera(s) are you using for your action footage? I'm thinking of getting one for our outings, and to use in our apiary.
Hi Terry, glad you stumbled across the channel! You will absolutely love Glacier, it's the best! I currently use a GH5 with a couple different lenses depending on things. I also have a GoPro for both Dalton and myself when things are a bit sketchy. We also have Iphone 14 pro's. The camera's in the Iphone 14 and 15's are so good now that I don't mind using them as well. The stabilization in the Iphone's are off the charts as well. Cheers!
Amazing place, great shots!!! Thank you for sharing. How long will it take for you to get to the top? Whats the brand of that orange hoodie you are wearing btw?
Thanks man, I appreciate you watching. I think it took Dalton and me around 7 hours to summit. I do a TON of messing around trying to get good shots so that adds a decent amount of time to our days. We've got a system down now for filming everything that cuts the time down a tad. I found the brand Stio in Jackson, Wyoming. They have incredible alpine clothes that I love!
Unbelievable views. Holy crap!! Outstanding footage. You killing me to get out west😄 to bad I live on other side of the country. This hike was incredible. Glad you guys stayed safe from the grizzlies.
By far my most favorite hike to date! Views and wildlife were incredible that day. Glad you're enjoying the adventures Jason! I'm super pumped for the next bunch of videos to come out 😁
Well done. Excellent vid with spectacular footage. Girls did a nice hike as well. Any parts of Siyeh (other than the top) where you can die while climbing.
It’s basically straight up after 3 or 4 miles of hiking. There are parts that if you slip or fall while climbing could cause serious injury or death. That being said the foot and hand grabs going up are good. It’s a decent class 4 scramble from the valley floor. Once you reach the ridge there is that massive cliff down to Cracker Lake but you can stay back as far as needed. It’s a tough climb if you’ve never done anything like that before and the route finding going up can be tricky. To this day it’s in my top 3 for sure 👍🏼😁 cheers Jon!
The grizzlies have figured out that army cutworm moths shelter under the rocks on Siyeh to escape the heat. That's why you see so many up there flipping rocks.
Thanks for the content Matt! What would you say are some other accessible peaks in the park? And where did you do your research to find the right trails? Thanks for the help!
Most peaks in Glacier are accessible it’s all about the individual’s experience level and desire to summit. Some are easier than others. Some have huge approaches and some are right off the road. I have multiple apps and research far in advance for the adventures depending on the experience level of the people I’m with. Thanks for watching! I use Strava, AllTrails, FATMAP-( going away with 😩) and Google earth. Between the aforementioned and the internet I unusually feel safe route finding 👍🏼

8 days is a great time frame for Glacier as you can almost guarantee a day or two for bad weather. We’ve had a complete rain (week)out 1 year and the next perfect weather. Both in August. Honestly September would be my first pick as the crowds are MUCH smaller and the foliage is top notch! The hikes are all incredible and only get better the more effort you put forth. Both sides have strenuous and easier type hikes. I have a few more Glacier vids coming out over the next few months 👍🏼😁

Love your videos; you do a great job! 👍 I'll be in Glacier in three weeks and am planning to attempt Siyeh... I've got Blake Passmore's "Climb Glacier Park" book with color photos of the route and GPS waypoints (though I'm at this point unclear on how to use waypoints, or which app to use; considering paying for AllTrails Pro to download offline maps... just not sure I really need that?) 🤔 Just wondering how much trouble you guys had in route finding? I've chatted with a few other people who have summited Siyeh, and they told me it's comparable to climbing up on your kitchen counter in the steepest sections of the cliffs. The crux of the climb looks a bit sketchy, and coming down (safely) is my biggest concern, as it will look a lot different than going up. Did you and your son get lost at all, or use any offline maps or GPS? Any advice you have would be appreciated. I'm kinda thinking as long as it's not foggy and we can see the thumb nail scree field at the base of the mountain, that should keep us from getting too far off route climbing up and down the creek beds/gullies? PS- We will have bear spray! 🐻
First off hopefully you get bears up there in the distance 😂 it will only add to the greatness of this hike😁. I read Blake’s book about Siyeh several times, which definitely helped. I also use Alltrails Pro for every hike just to be safe, it seems to always come in handy, and it did that day as well. When we met Daniel he had been much more to our right going up, and said that there were better defined trails going up where he was going down… I hope that makes sense 🤔. We did go down closer to where we saw him. It did have a tad better defined spur trails. If you’ve done any kind of class 3-4 climb before than you should be fine 👍🏼. Lots of foot holds and grabs. I always try to over-prepare for big days like that and it sounds like you do as well👍🏼. No way points needed, it’s pretty much keep going up. I liked our approach which brought us to that first overlook. You might be able to download my map from my Alltrails account. I think you just need to search my name? If you can download my map, let me know 😁 I’d love to know if that’s possible! I’m fairly certain it is. Let me know if you have any other questions 😁👍🏼!
@@TheMountainMatt I will definitely pay for AllTrails Pro in the next week or so; offline maps may come in handy on other hikes as well --hoping to also do Iceberg Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Dawson-Pitamakan, and Swiftcurrent Pass/Lookout-- and expecting lingering snow fields on all of them; could be challenging finding the trail in spots? ⛄️ I noticed while watching your video that it appeared you guys climbed up to the "left" of the large scree field/"thumb nail" at the base of Siyeh; Passmore's route is more off to the right, the middle and right of the three gullies I believe. I've heard from others that the way you went up can be much more dangerous class 3-4 versus class 2-3 on Blake's route. We will definitely try to stick with easier and safer, but I may take a look at your map before we attempt it 👍 I definitely want to climb up the upper scree portion of Siyeh near where you guys did above that ridge overlooking Upper Grinnell Lake and Salamander Glacier. Looks to me like the views along that cliff wall are fantastic all the way from the ridge to the summit; hopefully the bears will allow us to go that way versus more "in-land." Just don't get too close to the edge while climbing and enjoy the views 😲 I was last in Glacier in 2018, and we also summited Oberlin, though we went up the scree route rather than the climbers route you all did. We also did Grinnell Overlook off the Highline rather than The Loop, and then went up to Banff in Canada and summited Devil's Thumb above Lake Louise. Definitely recommend that hike --one of my all time favorites-- if you're not familiar. I do think Siyeh will ultimately become my favorite if we're able to get up there and live 😉🤞😬🐻🥵 Siyeh will likely be the toughest hike I ever try. Gotta get myself up there, because as you know, it's absolutely incredible 😍 Thanks for the reply, and keep doing what you do. ^^As I said, love your videos and appreciation for family and the mountains! Happy hiking!
@@greatestshow99 sounds like you have some good experience climbing and route finding 👍🏼 I think once you get up there you’ll be good. @@TheMountainMatt thanks, I’ve been wearing altra lone peak mids but they don’t have very good grip on rock. Been looking at the La Sportiva TX4. Love all your videos, keep it up.
Unfortunately not 😁 they finished long before us and headed back to the car to wait. We barely made it off the mountain before a storm came in. It was double time coming down. I’ll have to remember that kind of ending for future videos👍🏼😁 thanks, cheers!
I use and love FatMap. It has multiple options such as gradient levels ect… I’ll sit down at my Mac and research and review best options for peak hikes/climbs. You can download your route into your phone for live use. OnXBackcountry app is good as well.
It's a subjective kind of climb. If you have some experience route finding and some decent rock climbing/scrambling then it shouldn't be to tough. For people without much of the foregoing then it would be difficult. Hopefully that helps.
@@TheMountainMatt Awesome, we have this planned for day 2 of our trip! How do we get to Siyeh Bend? Do we just enter from the east side of going to the sun road? and follow it up until Siyeh bend
Going to the Sun Road runs from East Glacier to West Glacier. Siyeh Bend is up near Logan Pass close to the middle of Going to the Sun Road. There should be signs up there. I suggest getting the AllTrails app if you haven't already. You can download offline routes that will come in handy with route finding. Check on Google Earth for the exact spot that Siyeh Bend is on Going to the Sun Road.

That’s great that you still made it! Glad to hear there’s other routes up. I think we’ll be attempting it one day. I’ve yet to be in that part of the state. Ben has been up Baker multiple times and he’s mentioned making a run at Ruth in the past👍🏼. The weather up near Baker is so tricky.

I noticed while watching your video that it appeared you guys climbed up to the "left" of the large scree field/"thumb nail" at the base of Siyeh; Passmore's route is more off to the right, the middle and right of the three gullies I believe. I've heard from others that the way you went up can be much more dangerous class 3-4 versus class 2-3 on Blake's route. We will definitely try to stick with easier and safer, but I may take a look at your map before we attempt it 👍
I definitely want to climb up the upper scree portion of Siyeh near where you guys did above that ridge overlooking Upper Grinnell Lake and Salamander Glacier. Looks to me like the views along that cliff wall are fantastic all the way from the ridge to the summit; hopefully the bears will allow us to go that way versus more "in-land." Just don't get too close to the edge while climbing and enjoy the views 😲
I was last in Glacier in 2018, and we also summited Oberlin, though we went up the scree route rather than the climbers route you all did. Gotta get myself up there, because as you know, it's absolutely incredible 😍
Thanks for the reply, and keep doing what you do. ^^As I said, love your videos and appreciation for family and the mountains! Happy hiking!
@@greatestshow99 sounds like you have some good experience climbing and route finding 👍🏼 I think once you get up there you’ll be good. I did the same thing and when we starting climbing it all fell into place. If you like Glacier then you’ll love the Tetons as well! I have a few Teton videos coming out over the next few months when Dalton and I were out there last fall. Amazing hikes and seriously beautiful climbs! Every time I’m in either Glacier or the Tetons that becomes my favorite park! I go back and forth, they’re off the charts! Have a great adventure out there!

What boots are you guys wearing when hitting these peaks in Glacier.
I’m strictly La Sportiva where as Dalton likes Salomon. Emily has jumped on the La Sportiva women’s boots in the past two seasons as well.
@@TheMountainMatt thanks, I’ve been wearing altra lone peak mids but they don’t have very good grip on rock. Been looking at the La Sportiva TX4. Love all your videos, keep it up.
I can’t recommend the La’s enough 👍🏼 I’ve had 3 pair now 🤣 thanks Ryan! I’m actually back in Glacier as I respond to you 😃 love this place!
I wanted to see you and your son reunite with the girls. Is there a part two?
Unfortunately not 😁 they finished long before us and headed back to the car to wait. We barely made it off the mountain before a storm came in. It was double time coming down. I’ll have to remember that kind of ending for future videos👍🏼😁 thanks, cheers!
Incredible!🤯 Do you use an app for set routes when doing climbs like that?
I use and love FatMap. It has multiple options such as gradient levels ect… I’ll sit down at my Mac and research and review best options for peak hikes/climbs. You can download your route into your phone for live use. OnXBackcountry app is good as well.
From a 1/10 how tough was the clime up to MT Siyeh?
Have you ever climbed mt Ruth in the north cascades?
I just got back yesterday from Washington and Ruth was on the docket but it was terrible weather up near Baker all week. We ended up chasing the sun all over the state for 4 other bangers though. I've got Ruth and Icy still on the list for the future. I'd love to see the view of the Shuksan massif.
@@TheMountainMatt we did Ruth last year. The glacier was unusable. We went up the back way. The Wally Bahl route. Took 2 days but we did it.
Apakah kamu sepupu jason statham bro?
Hilarious 😂 I get that sometimes 🤣
I'm guessing you didn't find Daniel's body? Lol.
No luck thank God 😂🤣
@@TheMountainMatt Hahaha!
7 grizz sharing a summit ? Hum … 🤔
we saw 4, there was a lot of area up there for more. Apparently Siyeh is notorious for having a bunch of grizzlies up there.
