- Marking the 15th Anniversary of my historic 04/27/1997 meeting with the legendary Shawn Lane, here is a portion of this extremely rare video filmed @ CLUB TOAST in Burlington,VT ("don't look for it, it isn't there anymore"). I was pre-introduced to Shawn by a mutual friend , so when I said the name "Mickey," I was practically considered a friend as we headed upstairs to the dressing room to spend about an hour before, and then an hour after the show hanging out, discussing Keith Jarrett (Shawn was amazed that my favorite solo improv by Jarrett was the same as his: "Lausanne" from SOLO CONCERTS),Jeff Beck,Jan Hammer,John McLaughlin,Billy Cobham,Roy Buchanan,Al DiMeola,Chick Corea,Allan Holdsworth,John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra,Narada Michael Walden,Stanley Clarke,Jeff Berlin,Bill Bruford,Steve Lukather,Elvis, and life in general.
Shawn proved to be well read ,well spoken, and a humble gentleman with a great sense of humor. Enjoy this RARE footage and feast on the musical bounty! RIP Shawn, it was truly an honor to meet one of the greatest players on the planet!
sometimes i just take a quiet 5 seconds to be truly, deeply, sincerely be thankful for all the beautiful human beings who filmed Shawn playing live music. I don't know how else to express my gratitude for you guys and ofcourse for Shawn. Such pure, pure Music flowing through his soul! Thankful for him and his beautiful soul and his music.
Agreed 1000000%
I cannot articulate how Shawn's music moves me...So I will just say...Thank You.
AMEN BROTHER
Cheers to all who appreciate this music.
Daniel Natter Cheers too man ^^
Doktor Jekyll van Hyde do you know the first tune they are playing, I search almost everywhere still haven't found it
Cheers mate!
I have talked with Shawn's mother, and from that, I could imagine what Shawn was like. His mother is such a sweet person. I would have loved to have met Shawn in person.
Every note came from Shawn's heart. A lot of people. dont't understand that. Even "guitar players". He's not just shredding. If you follow him close enough you'l know. Its how he expresses himself. And ther's melody in there.
almost forgot! there's a funny story too.
So Shawn (he personally explained this to me) had gotten in the habit of taking his guitars by the neck and tossin them across the room at the end of clinics. lol. He said he had a certain way of throwing them so they would land on the body and be ok.. but once he threw mine and it landed on it's head and the head split in half.
So part of the deal was that my dad agreed to fix it when he got it from Shawn. He just glued and clamped it. thanks dad!
Keep playing in heaven, Shawn! We can hear you, always!
Great video!! I have liked Shawn Lane since 1991. I first heard him play on a CD I bought when I went to see Allan Holdsworth in concert. Allan was selling t-shirts & misc. stuff with some Mike Varney CD's in the mix. I am so glad I picked that up.
RIP Shawn....
When I told Jeff his playing reminded me of Narada Michael Walden, he was very pleased and he told me Narada is one of his all time favorite drummers. Jeff was also a very friendly person aside from being a stellar drummer.
Sipe with the dark Lennon glasses looked like Geddy Lee playing drums
Thank you so much for sharing this rare footage!
I was fortunate enough to be at this show.. and I've seen the Dog Catcher's too! Thanks for posting!
Hey man.. meant to reply earlier but I forgot.
To answer your question. My dad (and me) were really close friends with Shawn. I think Shawn owed my dad money or something, but he ended up getting that guitar from Shawn for my 15th birthday. I was thrilled obviously.
It's an amazing ax.. a Vigier They sponsored Shawn back in the day. Also, don't know if anyone will believe this but my dad was the one to come up with the idea for the flat neck on shawn's signature guitar. lol
Well thats a nice story Shawn asked me on the phone about a flat neck guitar about 29 years ago
I said I did not think it would work and he said why I thought it would buzz he said classical is flat
of course he was right it did work... Vigier got the idea of micro fret from micro fret out of new york.. they added a zero fret too it also the Scale for the 24 fret neck is not Vigier design either as Lynn Elsworth and Wayne Charvell had that in late 70s and 80s I own the machine I bought it from Lynn he ran boogie body guitars. So Shawn told me this idea 29 years ago...Perhaps Shawn discussed this with your Father back then.. Id love to see that guitar if you ever thought about selling it contact me I was taken by that super model eye shadow color Ashe actually thats Shawn's Daughters name..
Do you still have it?
Love seeing Jeff play his floor tom with a gold necklace borrowed from Mr. T.😂🏆.
Devil went down to Georgia,.. he was lookin for a soul to steal,.. he seen this cat, took a step back.. and said fuck that,... is this Cat for real????
Lovely footage! Thank you for sharing it along with the story!
So great, just slow burn to around 6:30, weather report meets sri chinmoy , loopin 12:30 another planet, thanks for the post. miss him RIP brother.
Shawn got his talent from another World
I don't think I've seen this particular finish and colourings of all the Vigiers I've seen Shawn play. I have one I bought in Oct2017 brand new from Patrice Vigier with the very dark evenly stained finish, see through scratch plate, and Rosewood fretboard(with Provence record for that protected tree) and HSH configuration DiMarzio pups.
I love the flat fretboard and not having a truss rod because of the carbon fibre reinforced neck. It also has a super sturdy locking jack input which is now standard on All Vigier guitars. Best guitars ever I think🎸🐕😀
Genius
Amazing drummer,bass and lane
One of the greatest trios ever. If not the best. And yes I am a huge Rush fan too.
@@ShanntahnPininchula isn'y sipe blonde...?
I have this show on cd❤
ha! I currently have this guitar in my possession.
The caliber of talent in this band should've had them selling out large arenas.....A shame they didn't
Only Shawn could play that while scatting with a cigarette hanging out his mouth!
After hanging out in the green room with Shawn and the band, he knew I had a lighter in my pocket, and called me by name to the stage to light that very cig.
@@DogCatchersBand Awesome story!
There is something different but better about this guy
Its great to know Shawn's other sides. I have never been the same ever since I first heard him 5 years ago. RIP
Cheers from England
;~)
Thats the koolest vid ive seen yet of him just doing his thing, awesome
Thank you.
Shawn would have wanted me to share this. Props to my friend in Quebec that filmed this and laid a copy on me (after about a year of persistent follow up)!
The greatest of all time
That,s some wild Jazz man
this is so good
very nice. what a blessing.
Thanks a lot :!:!:
As always Sipe just kills!
💟❤🔥💟
his simultaneous scatting and G*d-like "noodling" - I mean, who can do that ?
Nobody, that's who.
Best trio, ever, in ANY
genre. Saw them in Albany NY in '97 in small club, very much like this. I think my guitar teacher (Chuck D'Aloia, a fuckin'monster in his own right) went home and burned his guitar.
Do you have any backstage footage??
parabéns SHAWN LANE
@danogzilla Club Toast was on lower Church Street on the second floor, saw some great acts there,Shawn was the greatest by a country mile!
I was watching some Ravish Sitar effect pedal demos and somehow I got here next... I forgot that Shawn didn't need such useless toys T_T. He was music himself. Hearing that is like seeing voice of his soul coming through the guitar...
Wow. Awesome. Thanks.
THAT'S HYSTERICAL!!! :D lol, Peace!
Does anyone know the first song?
hey bro, i've had this dvd for years and the audio cd even longer. do i know you? this is steve from ohio.
Check out his "insane licks compilation" somewhere here on UA-cam.
Gwhindi DeLove Yeah those "licks" are great too !!!!
+Jonas Bylund they're insane :D
😁 from 10:20 to the end is my favourite bit of Shawn today 👏
he might still be with us if he hadn't smoked like a train, it's sad to watch
That's not why he died.
He ultimately died to lung failure in the end so yeah it had a big part or at least didn't help. Could have made him live a bit longer at least but it's too late to speculate now unfortunately.
Cushing's disease too - from the steroids used to combat the psoriatic arthritis. Medications available today would have treated this but back then they only had ways to lessen symptoms. It's a crime. As an uninsured musicians he would have found it hard to get treatment even if it had existed then. Sigh. RIP Shawn. @dodger g
@@aliensporebomb Shawn didn't take care of his health. He preferred to play and read instead of brushing his teeth and eating healthy and doing what would have given him more life but he preferred to spend it doing what he enjoyed instead. The country food in the midsouth, the smoking, the lack of sleep, the teeth rotting out in his 40s.... the cortisol was just one straw in that heap that broke the camel's back. just my take.
Autoimmune diseases attack everything
Name of song?
Indian Jam no.548?
R U CEREAL?!!! holy shhhhhow did that happen?
