    Saw Shawn at Audubon Park when he was 13 or 14. He was two years younger than me. It was with Savage and Tate Yaun was his Rhythm guitarist. I knew Tate a little because I went to School with him. He was very very good also. The guitar was almost bigger than Shawn. What a beautiful Sunday Afternoon in Memphis. The park was the best party place in America. Thousands of people there that day and I had a front row seat. Shawn was already better than 90% of the big names. One of my best memories as a teenager. The band sounded like a seasoned band but they were all kids. Jeff Beck said he may have seen the best guitarist in the World after he saw Shawn. What a Memphis Legend. The man was just as good of a Classical Pianist. True genius.

      shawn, tate and i were all very close friends when they had savage. they were both unbelievably great guitarists ,especially for their age. we recorded a song together one night at ardent sound. tates friend was learning to engineer and was given free time from 11pm til 1am. we had the greatest time. i miss those guys. there’s a link to a song of mine that shawn, david yandell, billy cooper and i recorded at kingsbury high school recording class incorrectly titled typhoid.. we were actually called red sharks. shawn is playing drums and lead guitar. we were 16, shawn 15. it was the first song i ever wrote and isn’t great but shawns solo is mind melting. thank you so much for sharing this. shawn was genius, and sweet,smart,funny and kind.

      @@davidcatching Wow! You were blessed my Memphis Brother. Absolutely miss those days myself. For some reason you're name rings a Bell. Back when Memphis was a Rock and Roll Blast. Man I really want to thank you for sharing those memories. Didn't Savage record To Cool For School at Treadwell Jr. High School at Summer and Graham? It has been so long ago. I believe I met you because your name is familiar.

    At the. 21 minute Mark is the greatest extended guitar solo I have ever seen during my 60 years on this planet. I thought John McLaughlin was the fastest technical guitarists I had ever seen , as well as the most explosive but I must say that Shawn Lane might have him beat. And for me to say that that's really something because I consider McLaughlin the greatest guitarist on the planet but I can't believe what I just saw. No wonder Shawn Lane is bucketheads favorite guitarist. And I must say that Shawn Lane blows Buckethead away so Buckethead has a great opinion of Shawn Lane for a reason. Because he's perhaps the most explosive creative genius that ever picked up a guitar

    Buckethead and les claypool are both real good, but they don't compose like these guys here. BH and LC don't have such well thought out and we'll composed arrangements, they both are extremely good at "messing around" with their instruments, making peculiar and interesting things, but they lack the traditional sense of composing and making things flow smoothly and fluid. Buckethead especially does a lot of nonsense, while some sounds cool, it's most unstructured and fragmented.

    • @gunshotlagoon922
      @gunshotlagoon922 Рік тому

      I absolutely agree and I'm a huge fan of Bucket and Les. They are great together and know how to put on a fun show. But their sound is definitely more about stylish edginess done "for effect" that they're almost one trick ponies. The overall musicianship of Lane and Hellborg is just lightyears beyond that in terms of composition and technique and versatility, there's really no comparison.

    This was probably the first thing Ive ever seen by Lane that I was disappointed by. Fretless is clearly not his instrument. Far too often to have been intended he was off pitch in his player. Especially the quicker parts. Granted, a fretless is insanely difficult to play dead on the pitch, but then dont play it. Lol. Still love Lane. Way better than Ill ever be.
