  • Fortunately, on Wednesday of last week, the winds briefly dropped and the sun came out.
So I grabbed my helmet and saddled up Buddy, my Royal Enfield Meteor 350, and we set off to film the road to Uleila del Campo.
The footage I got was enough for two videos, so not wanting to test your patience too much, I have split the video into two parts.
This is the second and final part of the ride.
You can check out my interview with Quinn from the Quinn Peaks Biker channel here if you want to : ‪@quinnpeaksbiker‬
Thanks due to Dave Ricketts for the W650 (!) and Willow pictures !!!
Congratulations due to Mike Hatswell following collection of his new Meteor 350.

i think Buddy is the best choice of a bike for the area you live! i was looking at the area you live and it is perfect for your roads and terrain. i am not sure of your highways and the land you cover on a normal year. looks like the way you film, it is non traveled roads with no lines in the middle. i hope to get out my three vids and move on as i want to do a video to OBX of North Carolina which is a 90 min ride for me with a bridge to an island that millions come from up north every year for vacation and i want to do it before it is 3 hours of stop and go to get on the island. and the north comes down (where i am from... New Jersey) the attitude changes as they are the loudest of people to spoil an afternoon. Virginia and south of me is called the south and they are more slow ( mentally and physically) and the quick and rudeness of the north works its way down. which is why i like this area. yes i am still a north guy with the abuility to be southern!

      Hi Blakester !
Yes, Buddy is perfect for these roads. The lazy nature of the engine ensures that you don't really have to touch the gearbox very much as you sweep through the bends, just rolling the throttle off and back on again. It makes for a really relaxing, enjoyable ride !
The bridge and the island sound exciting, so I look forward to the video of an obnoxious northerner putting noses out of joint down south 😝
Talking of a clash of cultures, you can't get much more extreme than the change in cultures I took on.
I came from living 13 years in Germany, where everything is regulated and everybody tries to adhere to the rules all of the time, to living in Spain, where despite regulations, hardly anything gets enforced and the people basically feel like they can do whatever they want !
It took some getting used to but now I do actually prefer the Spanish approach. It's more like things used to be. A bit more Wild West. Spain of course has its government and regulatory statutes in place but if you live in a rural area, it's as if they don't exist.
Like you, I have now found myself able to adapt and embrace their more laissez faire attitude. A simpler life is definitely better for the soul !
Cheers Blake and good luck getting your three vids finished.
Give Zeevee a hug from the pair of us !

      Hi Dave, sorry "Steve".
Yes. I often think that I'd rather be leisurely swinging Buddy through those bends than wrestling with something bigger and heavier, which also expects me to shift gears all of the time. A road like that is third or fourth gear on Buddy. Get him in the right gear and then you can more or less just leave him there, rolling on and off the throttle as the bends dictate. It really is a relaxing way to ride ! But then you know that yourself of course, having had an extended summer affair with RE UK's Meaty.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the ride Steve and hopefully you liked this video too 🤗😇
I will get Quinn to film and record all that happens on your debauched night out with Ken. He loves doing that sort of thing 😂
Dave is a handsome man, no doubt about that. It's just a shame that he's so shy about showing himself on the internet, he really shouldn't be 🤷‍♂

      Hi John,
glad you enjoyed the ride. Part one and part two together form a nice little circuit for me. Probably one of the best circuits I can ride without going too far afield. I hope to ride it more often this year because all of the roads in it are beautiful to ride.
I should be seeing the Shotgun tomorrow, the dealer has one in. Unfortunately, as usual, not for test riding. But at least I should get to see one in the metal, sit on it and touch it ! I shall make a video about it.
Stay safe you two and look after each other 🙂

You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed coming along for the ride. I notice that Fetish Dave also managed to sneak himself into this video. I think that after I flashed his picture up that ONE TIME and ONLY FOR A FEW SECONDS, he has decided to go all in and just put himself out there.
So in a way, I feel as though my unfortunate mistake has actually helped him to come out of his shell somewhat. So it was probably a good thing after all 😇

      Hi MAMRE,
well, if you go far enough back, to the early days, then yes.
One or two of my earliest on bike videos were filmed on this particular road, although I was coming up it, rather than down it.
I think that was still pre GoPro, filmed with my cheapo camera and with barely functional audio 😂

Ruby is definitely a "sossidge" enthusiast, of that there can be no doubt. I recently changed brand and was brave enough to try one ( the previous ones should have been classified as "for animal use only" if you ask me ! ). Anyway, the new ones actually taste quite decent and now I will be eating one from time to time, so Ruby finally has some competition 😂
I do love riding Buddy on roads like these.
Definitely balsam for the soul ! Now I just need the weather to be like that more often and I can maybe do the odd ride without simultaneously vlogging, which would make a nice change ! At this time of year, every ride needs to be a vlog if I want to stick to my schedule !

I agree. Riding Buddy on roads like these is so easy and so relaxing. You can pretty much leave him in one gear and just concentrate on enjoying the bends and the views. He's the perfect companion for the type of road riding I enjoy.
I recently rode the trail from Calar Alto to Alto Velefique ( the one you rode, the one with quite a lot of deep gravel ) and then continued on from Alto Velefique ( the trail you began riding when you were up there ) to PURCHENA !!! Yes, I was able to ride home from Alto Velefique using trails. From Alto Velefique it was 30km on the trails and I emerged in Purchena, right next to the road that takes me home. Awesome ride. Loved it. Video on the hard drive waiting to be bashed together for the week after next ! I can now do a 50/50 circuit. I can ride up to Alto Velefique from Tabernas on the roads and once I get to Alto Velefique I can ride the 30km trail home. How cool is that ? This is what the Himalayan is for !

No worries Garry, Blizzard's panniers will be full to overflowing with time as there's so much unfinished business for me in Almeria! 😎
That's one thing I miss about having sold Thumper, my old Bullet - just leave it in one gear (when I eventually found one!) and just ride.
I've had a closer look between the sellotape on my map, and can see exactly what you mean about the circuit from Purchena round and back on road and trail - exactly what I mean by unfinished business!

Yes, part one and two together form a circuit which brings me back home again, so it really is a fantastic ride whenever I have the time.
I haven't timed it but I would imagine that if I wasn't filming it would be about 2.5 hours to do the whole trip. I'd like to ride it more often but unfortunately I struggle to find that much spare time.
The Meteor is great on these roads because you can generally leave it in third or fourth gear and just roll off and on the throttle to adjust your speed through the bends. It makes for a really relaxing ride and of course, on these narrow roads, more power is probably only going to get you into trouble, be harder work. Another advantage of the Meteor is that the fuel consumption is so low that I could probably do this ride three times on one tankful, which appeals to the tight side of my personality ! 🥰
Good luck getting your new baby run in Mike. I hope you get a decent amount of compatible weather 👍🏻

@@mikehatswell3961 Hi Mike. Yes, shorter rides and lots of heat cycles are supposed to be beneficial in the early days. Unfortunately I never managed that with either bike, since I am always tight for time, so when I ride, I need to be filming, so it always ends up being a long ( usually hot ) ride. But so far, both Norman and Buddy have done okay without it. But definitely stick to that if you can !
I know what you mean. I'm sure that if I had another road bike, Buddy would still be my favourite. He's so easy to deal with and just so relaxing to ride. As I get older I will probably find that he's the only bike I can still deal with, so yet another reason why I don't think I'll ever sell him. I can see myself still enjoying Buddy well into retirement age ! 🙂

😂 Whisky and beer. Not a great combo in my experience. I hope you are feeling okay this morning Simon !
Buddy would definitely be up for some more off-roading, he's up for anything, but I'd feel bad putting him through it. That's what Norman is for. Norman likes a good beating, he thrives on it 😂
You certainly don't need much to have fun off-road. Norman is a very simple bike really and of course he has a lot more ground clearance ( although still not ENOUGH ! ) than Buddy, so he won't injure himself so easily on those pesky rocks. I would prefer Buddy's seat height off-road though, that would certainly give me a lot more confidence ! I can see where you are coming from. A second-hand, beaten up Meteor to convert into an off-road tool is quite appealing. Strip everything off that isn't needed and get some decent wheels and tyres on it. Ride it in the mountains and improve it where necessary. Eventually you would have a manageable little thumper for the trails.
Unfortunately I'm not an engineer and would probably make a right hash of it. So I think I will have to give custom builds a miss Simon.
With regard to the weather, that's the bizarre part. The weather here has generally been terrible and then between two prolonged spells of stormy weather, we'll suddenly have one or two perfect days, like the one in this video. You can see how many good days we've had by the number of videos I've posted because if it has been riding weather any day this year, then I have been out filming !
Ruby is now very excited Simon !!! 😝🐕
Cheers Simon and I really hope that your back pain subsides soon. I have had spells of that myself and when it happens it is a right PITA !
