    Well damn. I thought I went over this in the review, but as it turns out: I didn't. So remember the character that I spoke of? It tends to be far more obvious when you tether these speakers to inexpensive gear. I'm talking receivers, affordable integrated amps, etc.. However, once you connect them to proper high end components, that lively yet warm character becomes less obvious. Don't get me wrong, a little bit of it will always be there, but when at they are at their best - the Ultras will deliver a fairly neutral and balanced sound. Of course, by the time you reach this point, you're connecting $1,000 speakers to $5,000 + amplifiers, which few people will actually do. But still... it's worth mentioning.

      In my experience as an owner of these for over 6 months is........They are brutal to the truth of the recording. Even with average gear pushing them,,they will not lie about a crappy mix,,,,,,and that kind of hurts when you just want to listen. But pop on a good mix?........Heaven.

      When I first heard the Ultra Bookshelves, they were driven by an Outlaw Model 5000 and sounded fantastic. I tried driving them with a Marantz SR5010 receiver and they didn't change significantly, but they were slightly more anemic. I currently drive my Ultra Towers with a Crown Audio XLS 2502. Not exactly traditional audiophile gear, but they never, ever lack authority.

    I own these speakers many years now and everything you say is spot on! What I did notice is when I placed them in the right spot of my room the bass can sound much fuller and lower, but with a small svs sub, the sound is at a whole other level. I have yet to hear a more realistic sounding, more detailed and better imaging speaker tbh. Only my vintage Sony APM-33W speakers get really close. With the Ultra's you can hear every sound and voice in one exact point. When I close my eyes it is as if that person is singing right in front of me. Absolutly amazing speakers for the price.

    For the past 18 months I have owned the Ultra Bookshelf speakers, Ultra Center and 2 SB200 Pro subs paired with the Yamaha A6A receiver. Your review is spot on and especially about the tweeters as I set them 2db less to compensate for the forward sound versus a soft dome tweeter. The Ultra's were great with my Yamaha 1080A but really shine with the new Yamaha A6A. The tonal matching across my Ultra setup is excellent. The system really came into its own after I installed the second sub. For the money, my 5.2 system rocks with movies and shines with jazz and classical vinyl albums. Thanks for honest review.

    Sean, thanks for the excellent, excellent review as always. The SVS Ultra Bookshelf is indeed a well balanced speaker. I previously auditioned them against the Aperion Verus III Grand Bookshelves and the KEF Q350s. The Verus IIIs were the weakest of the three pairs, with a sibilant, lean presentation that somehow lacked soundstage and air. Imaging was laser sharp, irritatingly so thanks to its tonal balance, but that's perhaps all it had going for it. The Ultras and the Q350s were much closer. Both were detailed, clean, and relatively neutral, so their overall presentation had much in common. The Q350s cast a slightly more stable "canvas" of a soundstage, with precise imaging happening on it. Though the Ultras didn't have the technical precision of the Q350s, their presentation produced a more holographic image and sense of space. There was almost a perception of height both other pairs couldn't produce. Their combination of airier treble and warmer midrange made them sound lush and organic, without wildly deviating from neutrality. They had all the detail of the Q350s, but the edges of said detail and accompanying imaging were just slightly smoother, resulting in that lively sound you mentioned. The bass on the Ultras reached deeper and hit harder than the other two, so they are certainly not below average and never unsatisfying. Years later, they are not embarrassed by the latest models from their competition.
    The three pairs were proxy auditions for their respective towers, so I ultimately ended up getting the Ultra Towers. For the price, they're an incredible value. I used to own Klipsch RF-82 II towers as my first "real" set of audiophile speakers before eventually getting tired of their bright, beamy presentation. I probably over-corrected with the very respectable PSB Imagine X2T's, which were more balanced, but lacked that final word on detail. The Ultra Towers are not perfect, but they are quite close to perfection for me.
    For those who bothered to read this far, thank you. I hope my auditioning experiences are helpful in some way to anyone stressed over making a purchasing decision. That said, trying different equipment is how you learn about them and your own tastes, so I don't regret the journey. It was simply a part of the hobby.

      @Simon Tse your thoughts and impressions are VERY much appreciated considering, I am currently going back and forth on the very 3 speakers you’ve auditioned... up until now, I was leaning towards the AA GV III but I’m disappointed to hear they didn’t at least come close to the Kef Q350. Ultimately, between your final decision on the SVS and Sean’s review, I will be getting my hands on the Ultras. I just really liked the current sale price on the KefQ350. :)

    • @simontse1171
      @simontse1171 4 роки тому +1

      @@freakin13guy Ultimately, it should be your ears making the final decision. You said you were leaning towards the Grand Verus III? Have you actually heard them or are you merely comparing reviews? If you actually heard these speakers, do not second guess yourself. Sound is a very subjective and emotional thing and I've found one of the worst things about the hobby is constantly wondering if you made the right choice.
      If you haven't heard the speakers you're contemplating, I'd suggest you arrange to hear them yourself. Pay for returning shipping if you must, infinitely better than second guessing yourself for the rest of time.

    Nice review, Sean. On a related note, you might want to know that your videos actually have real-world effects. Based at least partly on your review of the Tekton Design Double Impacts (I had never heard of them until I watched your video), I purchased a pair of Tekton Design Ulfberhts. It is the best speaker I have ever heard, and by a fairly wide margin. They require a good sized room to perform their best, but luckily I have one. I couldn't be happier. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Great review and not just because my experience with the Ultra's mirror your own. I'm one of those few people who paired them up to an $8000 receiver. I was extremely impressed with them. Everything you said about them was pretty much spot on, allowing for bit of subjectivity that is a fundamental part of the audio experience. These speakers are the real deal as they more than held their own when I compared them to a pair of $5500 speakers from a very well respected speaker brand. I played a few reference songs over and over again alternately through one and then the other for the better part of an afternoon. The difference between the two was negligible. I parted with the Ultra's only because the aesthetics of the pricier pair was far superior, as could be expected. Still, I would have kept the Ultra's had I not gotten the others extremely discounted. While a thousand bucks is not cheap, I think the folks at SVS have made their mark at that price point, and in my view they are an outstanding value. On a more personal note, I think I can speak on behalf of the entire UA-cam community when I say that I did not appreciate the comment you made about having to do your review with your pants on due to the reflective nature of the Ultra's gloss black finish. Besides the fact that the mental image of you in that state of undress causes my brain to clip, all of your previous and future videos will cause me to wonder whether you are sans pants or not. One can only guess what negative long-term effect that will have on my psyche.

    FWIW, I have been running a set of these for about six months now. So far, I have been very happy with them. One tip on bass response: if you are thinking about these, you really need to plan to run them in a 2.1 setup. SVS is still largely a subwoofer company, and it really feels like they voiced these speakers with the expectation that you'd eventually be running a dedicated subwoofer with them. I suppose that almost any speaker will sound better when paired with a dedicated sub, but these just come alive with one. The bass response isn't bad on a stand-alone basis, you could certainly buy these and get a sub down the line for them, but you are really missing out on what these speakers are capable of if you run them without a sub.
    I suppose it could be that some of what I'm observing is that a dedicated, powered subwoofer is giving me a fair bit more amp headroom, and that is helping with the "they need a great amp to run their best" issue. But regardless of what is behind it, these things will play extremely nicely with a subwoofer, even if it is not one made by SVS.

    • @rickc661
      @rickc661 5 років тому

      thanks for the last bit about adding a sub - nearly totally different but I have Q acoustics 3010I with only 4 in. 'bass' so of course they're designed for a sub. - Kinda just for fun I'm gonna put a 6 in powered sub in old style ( plywood !) cabs with veneer finish, 19 in high. So I'll have full range bookshelf spks and I'm hoping exactly what You said, trust, that the subs add to the Q's overall inpression + relatively more power to the amp, the Q's are pretty inefficient I think. So for a total of $500. pr hopefully a set of full range with Q's generally very well rated sound.
      PS this'll be what Polk maybe should have done with the LSM3 's - design the bass for lower AND just a bit 'boosted' bass : full range bookshelves, well solid down to 40 anyway.

    • @simonlodge733
      @simonlodge733 5 років тому

      You're absolutely right @trustbuster23 - after a lot of research I invested in a pair of the SVS ultra bookshelf speakers and paired them with an SVS SB2000 sub. I haven't got much experience with good HiFi systems or speakers so I was amazed at the clarity and feeling of space this setup provides.
      For electronics I hooked them up with a Yamaha A-S801 stereo amp with up to 150W per channel and a decent on-board DAC.
      I adjusted the sub with a calibrated microphone to give a flat response at 70dB so it allowed me to hear more of songs I thought I knew well.
      The experience remains impressive even after a year of owning them and I'm happy to recommend joining a sub with them.
      Be warned. They go very loud. I use them in a small room and I was curious how loud they would get. I stopped at about 60% volume when they hit 110dB so if you're after loud, these should do.

They are paired with a Rega amp and SB2000 but as good as the Ultras sound using DSP via MiniDSP and Dirac has taken them to an entirely higher level. Thank you for rounding up to a solid and honest dollar amount. I get (the actually stupid) reason retail does it. But that doesn't mean reviewers have to be equally annoying with it. Yet, almost everyone is. Except my new hero, Zero effing Fidelity!
    Speaking of fidelity. Man, have you heard REO's High Infidelity lately? Such an uplifting, airy production. Lively, and sweeping. Electric. As in when sports announcers say, "You can really feel the electricity in the air tonight." The sound of exuberant youth. Great days.
    "You take it on the run baby. But that's the way I want it baby." And that guitar solo really lifts off. "weeeahhaaa, weeahhh weeeee WEEEEHHHAA!!!!!" Prolly a good song to test a speakers handling of pitchy treble / sibalance. I figure the Kliptch were made for this album.
    I just looked up who produced it. A guy named Kevin Beamish. Funny that I used the term airy to describe the sound. Turns out, he got his start in music as a woodwind musician. And produced Starship's "Winds of Change" song. So lots of wind going on with this fella.
    By the way, I heard Winds of Change a few months ago, and thought, man this is a forgotten near-hit if there ever was one. Very cool and well-constructed powerhouse (power ballad?) And has the same Hi Infidelity energy and slick swooping dynamics.
    I have to run. But another song in this sort of sophisticated power ballad vein is Triumph's "Fight the Good Fight". I was impressed with the production years ago so I looked it up and it's Eddie Kramer. From Hendrix, Zeppelin, Frampton Comes Alive, etc fame.

    I recently reviewed these connected to a Yamaha n803 side-by-side with a pair of “cheapo” NHT SuperOnes ( *not* the Zeros) and they sounded remarkably similar to the point that I kept the NHTs. The Ultras had about 5dB more bass and were maybe 2dB more sensitive. Otherwise, tossup.
    I finally settled on LS50s. Don’t believe the chat about them being bright. Connected to the Yamaha, they are remarkably neutral and *never* bright. That may say more about the n803, but the combo is excellent to my ears.

    I had a pair for a while, good value. Not "major league" but very good. There are better aluminum tweeter implementations out there. Vandersteen, Vonswikert and others have superb speakers with Vifa al tweeters. Agreed on the mids. Good bass for it's size, not the best.

    Do you still have these ? I have connected some up to a Sansui 2000. I think I have found an example of great detail that I am loving. I have them on the Douk VU3 so I can swap between them and the RP-600m II I like the RP better if I want to hear more bass punch and more forward trebble out of them. I like the ULTRA when I am enjoying detail in the music.

    Okay Sean, pretty good review but a couple of things:
    1. You mentioned caveats before the caveats.
    2. Revel uses aluminum tweeters on their M106 bookies among others and they sound incredible. When can you review one?
    3. Is it possible to add a decent sub as an extra thought when reviewing bookies? I think most people have at least a sub or two and that would add substance to the average user who wouldn't need to worry about low end. Just a thought.

    Review is spot on, have had mine for a few months too... You need subs with these, and they pair nicely with the SVS SB-3000 subs, a pair, you need a pair. To tone down those ugly recordings, and these will let you know, garbage in garbage out with these, I added the Schiit Loki in the mix. Want some warmth, the Schiit Freya tube amp will do just that... And if you really want these to stink up your sound, go 10 or 8 AWG on the speaker cable. I went from 12 AWG to 8 AWG, and these babies lit up with the Emotiva XPA-2 amp. You want loud and clear? Oh baby! Mine are staying.

    Looking for a recommendation. I have a modest Sony 7.2 receiver. I'm currently driving vintage DCM Time Window 3s, along with vintage DCM Time Piece and vintage DCM Halftime speakers. I'm looking to ditch the vintage and go modern, with bookshelf for the fronts. I will also have 1-2 subwoofers. Strongly considering SVS, but am now tempered due to your thoughts on 1) bright treble due to aluminum driver, and 2) non-stellar performance with lower-end power source.
    So, what other brands and models should I consider? I'm looking at $1,000-$1,500 total for the front pair of bookshelf speakers. The 2 sets of surrounds need to be smaller, especially the rears. I'm assuming they will cost less than the fronts.
