I really like the balance of laid back vs details that the OG Ultra just gets right for me. My favorite speakers are time-acurate Meadowlarks so I'm tempted by the Evos, but honestly am not sure I'd enjoy what sounded like a less laid back speaker.
I c a n hear a difference… there’s a distinct, somewhat forward loudness in the mids on the Evo, that the Ultra doesn’t have. On a couple sections on tracks, they (SIGNAL TRACKED) almost Identically, it was amazing hearing that! Any audiophiles interested in Ultras should note that, THAT evolved difference can be duplicated by some VERY slight shelving on an Eq to approximate a nearly equal variant on the Evo and save a coupla bucks in the bargain! I really wish someone would do this comparison between the SVS Ultra tower and the SVS Ultra Evolution tower. All I'm seen is is reviews of the Titan and Pinnacle. None of the evo tower which I understand replaced the Ultra Evolution tower!!
+1 with that too! Evo Tower pricing was delayed in Canada for quite some time, so I am assuming product was too? But yes, too much emphasis on the Pinnacles and Titans right now. Canadian pricing is $8000 and $6000 a pair respectively for the Pinnacles and Titans which is a hard pill to swallow for most ht enthusiasts. Really looking forward to the Evo Towers and I really hope they test better than the disappointing Pinnacles did with Erin's Audio Corner recently.

Thank you for taking the time to talk about what you heard in the differences between the two. I am glad you had the equipment to make it easier to switch between the two. I upgraded from the Ultra bookshelf speakers to the Evolution Titan speakers but did not really take the time to A/B them like you did in your room. It really would not be a fair comparison going front he bookshelf speakers to a tower speaker. Even if I kept my subs on during the comparison, I simply get better lower extension with the towers and subs compared to bookshelves and subs. I agree that the soundstage seems higher, which I really enjoy pulling the soundstage a little higher into my screen. There is definitely more detail between the two lines of speakers too. Again, thank you for taking the time to explain what you heard.
Nice review and demo. I can definitely hear the difference with the center image dropping when you switch to the ultras and the evolutions are more clear and image is spread out more.
Very good take and comparison of these two sets of bookshelf speakers. I usually don’t hear much difference when listening to comparisons through a set of headphones. But I have to say, I did notice quite a difference. Although both the Ultra and Evolution sound great, the Evolution speakers definitely have a broader wider dispersion sound than the Ultras. I did not notice much difference in the low end, but I can definitely hear the difference in the highs and mids of the Evolution. And trust me, although I know a little about sound, I am not an expert.

I liked the Ultra better, more bass, and all the instruments blended better. Not harsh like the Evo.. I bypassed the evaluation, and went to the demo . The Evo was more detailed, but would need a sub and was harsh with some music. I see what you mean about the Ultras being backward in presence and the Evo more forward. I would buy the Evo with a sub, and some EQ. to soften some of that harshness with certain types of music.
@@bearclaw5115 Keep in mind that the recorded demos aren't an entirely accurate depiction of what is heard in the room. We are at the mercy of what the mic picks up.
The Neosis are more Neutral and can get much louder than the Evo's, but the Evo's would be better for music. Keep in mind the Neosis do not do any low bass. If you are pairing them with subwoofers, then I would lean towards the Neosis.

With that being said, what do you think about these kits that you can buy to "upgrade" the sound, such as ones that have better crossover parts, etc? If I can find some regular Ultras at a lower price, should I just grab 'em and forget about the Ultra Evolutions? Let me know what you think!
Considering the Evos for desktop speakers. Very near field (under 2ft). I'm sure there are more economic choices for such close range, but I'm really interested in tthese.

I remember demoing the Ultra bookshelf vs My rp8000f in the only highend speaker retailer in my country. I almost went for the ultra, but for the price it wanst much of a choice because atm they both cost about the same and the rp8000f just beat it in practically every way. I did notice the Ultras were quite "rich" for their size. Wish i could snag a pair from the outlet sales, but import fees are too high, would be a killer desktop pair. I'll probably end up keeping my Klipsch for as long as I'm on this plane lol, they have a "live" sound to them.
That's really hard for me to answer. I have not heard the Q series. If we are just comparing known preconceived assumptions about speakers. Then I would venture a guess that the KEF are more neutral than the SVS. Sorry, but that's all I can really guess without hearing them first. I do hope to get a pair of KEF Q Concerta Meta bookshelves in.

At least in Canada, the Concerto's are $1799 per pair and the Q11's are $1499 Each speaker, $3000 per pair. I've been in touch with Arendal, and it looks like I should be able to get the 1528 towers in for review. Possibly in the new year.

A little late to the party. I have owned the Ultras for a few years. Great for TV and movies but I found them a bit fatiguing with music. I tried the Evo's for a couple of months and ended up selling them a friend. I couldn't live with them...way too forward for my liking. Great review!
Hello. Are Evos fatiguing for movies aswell ? I plan to use speakers as fronts for movies primarily, so which one would you recommend? Difference between them is around 250 dollars in my country. Thanks

That's good to know the evolution are too forward and more forward than the ultras. I'm surprised the ultras were too fatiguing for you since the dome design is much nicer for me after JBL 530s and a 520C. The highs for the JBLs were way harsher and were too quiet at lower volumes and built to harsh levels when increasing the input. Sorry to hear the ultras were too harsh. I listen to a lot of electronic music with synths and trap elements or thrashy guitar in metal, and I've found them to be a welcome relief after the JBLs. But, this helps make my mind up to probably not try and trade up for the evolution and appreciate the deal I got at the SVS outlet on the ultras. I'll forever be wary of horns going forward as far as fatigue.

The reason why I ask is because the ultras are $700 versus the evolutions are $1,200 and I would be using them for side surround speakers not front speakers, so is the sound from the evolution speakers $500 better than the ultras especially since there isn't a major difference as far as sound quality?
It really depends on your budget. The EVO are the better sounding, more detailed speaker. This will help in a home theater use case. If it were me, I would be buying the EVO's.

@@sanonmars that's my plan, and since I won't have the ultra and evo speakers' side by side, my ears are going to adapt to the ultras. I will be using the extra $500 toward the purchase of the SVS ultra evolution center channel as I'm in the process of upgrading my home theater from a 7.1 to a 9.1.
There was a noticeable sound improvement between the Ultra and Evo. I imagine the same would apply to the center channel. I think it may be noticeable if you paired these with the Prime center, but as long as it doesn't bug you, then by all means.

I agree, the sound is compressed. But each speakers recording will be compressed equally. So the differences that were there, are still there, just not AS pronounced. You absolutely can hear differences if you listen with a resolving system or a good pair of headphones. Cheers.

I have SVS Ultra and Ultra Centre. I really did not want to hear much of a difference, because as an ex sound recording mixer, I have a little OCD and I am worried about my pocket. The Evolutions are a little more pronounced in bass, clearer in the highs and upper mids, very focused and detailed which on some instruments may sound strident because they are so detailed. But the biggest difference is not the Evolutions being higher or bigger in sound, but they have great depth. The Ultras are a little 2D, and in sound mixing this is what was the holy grail- to get depth and separation, and a lot of 3effort is used using great mikes, pre amps and converters etc. Bugger, the Evolutions greater depth is very stark- and a bit depressing to me-oh well, may have to sell it to my wife saying we need to go white speakers to match the white Hamptons look in the house .....
I'd have every troll in the audio industry on here telling me why I shouldn't do that lol. But I get what your saying, it's interesting to see the difference between uber high end and the more affordable stuff.
Are these reviews for general public? Because if you don’t open up a speaker, show and talk about the crossover components it really is - only describing the speaker how the manufacturer intended it to sound, while trying to save on the internal components that the public doesn’t see. Meaning the reviewers know very little about speaker design and how their internal counterparts make the difference to the sound… Have you tried opening one up and thinking of what any of it means?? I see/hear - here’s a new car that looks like this, sounds like this and drives like this, but nobody ever opens up the hood and tells us how it does that… 🤔
I'm planning a teardown for another video. Most potential buyers only care about how it performs and sounds. But there are some that want to see the insides. So I will show it in a different video.

G-R Research has broken down an SVS Ultra bookshelf and the crossover that is in it is crap. This is where the corners are cut with companies like SVS. Don't get me wrong I own some SVS speakers I wish I knew before I purchased what I know now.
@@cgcarlos45 They’re not SVS, they’re a HiVi 2.2A DIY kit from Amazon, but I’m sure they would beat everything on the market now (Dyn Audio drivers). I did do a crossover upgrade using GR and other’s techniques ... after getting a Umik-1 measuring mic. A bit involving, but very necessary IMHO!
After SVS dropped the price of the prior ultra series at the end to dump stock they devalued the current owners that there is no reason now to sell them or trade them in... due to this bad business move i will never buy another svs product again.... they screwed their current customers.
Your old speakers are still good though…. Im sure the new ones are nice but worth replacing stuff you already have? Doubt it. I was interested in the new Ultra Elevations but for almost double the price? No thanks. I’ll spend my money on more room treatments and probably get better results.

I know the price is a bit different between the 2 but how would Ultra Evolution compare to Noesis 110HT?
The Neosis are more Neutral and can get much louder than the Evo's, but the Evo's would be better for music. Keep in mind the Neosis do not do any low bass. If you are pairing them with subwoofers, then I would lean towards the Neosis.

would you consider the speakers warm (laid back), neutral or bright sounding (shouty)?
It isn't shouty. It's close to neutral, but it has a slight bump in the treble and bass regions.

For surround I would save and use that money for sub or front unless I do not have any budget in mind.

Svs ultra center or evolution center which one best?
I have not heard them both, but given my experience with the bookshelves, the Evo center would perform better.
To me I’d like the sound of the Ultra cuz it’s fuller. As far as the sound stage
I have the Ultra B.S, and like them, but upgrading to the Evo B.S. soon. SVS is a great company to deal with. 👍Great comparison demo! 👍
you should really do an upgrade if your going to spend the money instead of a minor upgrade for the same speakers lol
. . . you cannot hear slight differences using U-tube as a source. They compress the sound.
I agree, the sound is compressed. But each speakers recording will be compressed equally. So the differences that were there, are still there, just not AS pronounced. You absolutely can hear differences if you listen with a resolving system or a good pair of headphones. Cheers.

@@psyphonyxaudio I don't see any other comments, not even in the "Held for Review" folder...weird. Now worries dude. Haha, yeah mics can surely make a difference. I did notice a big step up in spatial quality when I switched to the binaural mic, even after UA-cam compresses it.

Yup .. Sound demos online are a stretch even at its best.. but its better than nothing imo.
I have SVS Ultra and Ultra Centre. I really did not want to hear much of a difference, because as an ex sound recording mixer, I have a little OCD and I am worried about my pocket.
The Evolutions are a little more pronounced in bass, clearer in the highs and upper mids, very focused and detailed which on some instruments may sound strident because they are so detailed.
But the biggest difference is not the Evolutions being higher or bigger in sound, but they have great depth. The Ultras are a little 2D, and in sound mixing this is what was the holy grail- to get depth and separation, and a lot of 3effort is used using great mikes, pre amps and converters etc.
Bugger, the Evolutions greater depth is very stark- and a bit depressing to me-oh well, may have to sell it to my wife saying we need to go white speakers to match the white Hamptons look in the house .....
You should've done a audio clip back to back with the legacies.It'd be good to hear the difference between the two.
I'd have every troll in the audio industry on here telling me why I shouldn't do that lol. But I get what your saying, it's interesting to see the difference between uber high end and the more affordable stuff.
Ultra sounds airier and definitely a wide soundstage (to me)
I think the old ones sound better on youtube.

Are these reviews for general public?
Because if you don’t open up a speaker, show and talk about the crossover components it really is - only describing the speaker how the manufacturer intended it to sound, while trying to save on the internal components that the public doesn’t see.
Meaning the reviewers know very little about speaker design and how their internal counterparts make the difference to the sound… Have you tried opening one up and thinking of what any of it means??
I see/hear - here’s a new car that looks like this, sounds like this and drives like this, but nobody ever opens up the hood and tells us how it does that… 🤔
I'm planning a teardown for another video. Most potential buyers only care about how it performs and sounds. But there are some that want to see the insides. So I will show it in a different video.

G-R Research has broken down an SVS Ultra bookshelf and the crossover that is in it is crap. This is where the corners are cut with companies like SVS. Don't get me wrong I own some SVS speakers I wish I knew before I purchased what I know now.
@@cgcarlos45 They’re not SVS, they’re a HiVi 2.2A DIY kit from Amazon, but I’m sure they would beat everything on the market now (Dyn Audio drivers). I did do a crossover upgrade using GR and other’s techniques ... after getting a Umik-1 measuring mic. A bit involving, but very necessary IMHO!

After SVS dropped the price of the prior ultra series at the end to dump stock they devalued the current owners that there is no reason now to sell them or trade them in... due to this bad business move i will never buy another svs product again.... they screwed their current customers.
Your old speakers are still good though…. Im sure the new ones are nice but worth replacing stuff you already have? Doubt it. I was interested in the new Ultra Elevations but for almost double the price? No thanks. I’ll spend my money on more room treatments and probably get better results.
