      @@N0rmad Santana wasn't doing press conferences, nor were any other bands in the early 70s. That started - and pretty much ended - with The Beatles, and to a lesser extent the Stones. You don't find, for instance, press conferences of The Who. There wasn't a whole lot of video media covering rock music in depth, other than stuff you might see on PBS once in a while, or in Europe (like this interview). And often that was kinda pretentious. You'd get certain spokesmen for soundbites like a Pete Townshend or a Frank Zappa, but mostly you have to rely on concert footage shot by tripping cameramen! Also, most of the San Francisco bands were completely ambivalent about the press and other than Grace Slick, Paul Kantner and to a lesser extent Jerry Garcia, you seldom see interviews with these people. Try finding me an interview with Moby Grape, for instance!

    • @N0rmad
      @N0rmad 3 роки тому

      @@TTM9691 That's not true.I've seen plenty of press conference or interviews from bands/artists like Zeppelin,Stones,Queen,Grateful Dead and even lesser known ones like Yes and Genesis.

      @@N0rmad Not on a regular basis, and almost always in Europe. So you're wrong, bands in the 70s were not routinely doing press conferences. Sure, some big bands did some. Most did not. So you should not surprised at all that there are no press conferences with Santana. I don't see many Jimi Hendrix press conferences, do you? I don't see any press conferences of The Who. Or Yes. Or Jethro Tull. Or The James Gang. Or about ten thousand other bands that were just a big as Santana was. Yeah, when Lou Reed goes to Australia there's a press conference. I'm not saying there aren't ANY, I'm saying there weren't that many. What the hell do you think the press was made of in the 70s? Rock and roll fans? Are you out of your mind? They were middle aged white guys in hats, you think they even knew who Santana was? C'mon. You might want to try actually living through the period.

    The gentleman sitting next to Carlos answering questions is Joseph Thomas "Coke" Escovedo. The Escovedo and Santana families were good friends living in the Mexican American neighborhood called the "Mission District" in San Francisco,CA In the 60's and 70's. Escovedo joined Santana early in 1971 when Jose "Chepito" Areas became seriously ill. "Coke" played Timbales, Bongos, assorted Percussion and Backing Vocals. After the break up of Santana later in the year, Escovedo formed the Latin/Rock/Funk band "Azteca" in 1972.

      That’s because he was hanging with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead & was scheduled to go on late that night after Garcia. Jerry talked Carlos into taking some acid and about the time it kicked in he was made to go on stage after another band was a no show. He said it felt like his guitar was a snake, moving around and he was trying to keep it from getting away. He stole the show, even Jimmy Hendrix was impressed. ua-cam.com/video/DFBtdRJm-6g/v-deo.html

    Santana fans, Joseph Thomas "Coke" Escovedo, as is evidenced in this clip, possessed a very strong personality!
    "Coke" has been blamed for the dissolution of the original Santana band in 1971.
    When Escovedo joined, as a temporary replacement for an ailing Jose "Chepito" Areas who suffered a brain aneurysm in early 1971, his presence was felt immediately. He was a professional Percussionist who played explosive Timbales, Bongos and assorted Percussions. Escovedo played and recorded with Jazz musician Cal Tjader.
    "Coke" and Carlos began hanging out and the other members of the band disapproved.
    MICHAEL CARABELLO ~ "There were cliques goin' with "Coke" Escovedo and Carlos. "Coke" started kissin' his ass tellin' him, 'Well, your name is Carlos Santana, you shouldn't listen to anyone else. You should be the leader.' It went to Carlos' head.'
    NEAL SCHON ~ "He filled Carlos' head with so much shit and Carlos fell for it."
    DAVID RUBINSON ~ "Coke" was hired and given a large amount of money: Well, man, he got ten grand cash to start. I mean, they took care of him good. So they went on the road. And all this political shit went on, and all this bullshit started with Carlos and "Coke" being bosom buddies against somebody else, and then this one against that one, and then finally it came back with they all had a meeting and "Coke" wanted to get rid of Marcum, Santana's manager, and then he got a couple of the guys on his side and ... "Coke" made too.much trouble.

The guy was "in tune" and aware of many things that causal music fans were not aware of. He wasn't technical, but he didn't need to be. His intuition and his inspirations were leading him. How can anyone say he does not appreciate HIS own hard work and that he was finally recognized as a unique and accomplished artist? Makes no sense whatsoever.
