    I honestly don't understand these generalized tips. And I don't mean to single out your specific clip. If this is a employer - employee relationship then it is totally up to the main photographer to clearly and specifically communicate what they want/don't want to be done. These "gripes" are not second photographer's failings. These are the failings of the employer, a team leader, who has not clearly outlined what is they want from their employee.

      I think you’re partially right here. I think it is definitely up to the lead to provide specific instruction. At the same time, I think there is a general expectation that all second photographers should look to achieve. In our experience, and in experiences from other Photographer friends of ours, we found that there are a lot of problems with the second shooters in a lot of general areas and in doing very basic things that should be required of them that often shouldn’t need any sort of instruction given to them at all. But sometimes instruction is given and it’s ignored. Sometimes second photographers are hired and don’t live up to the work they showed us originally. Sometimes second photographers shoot for their own portfolio instead of being there to support the lead shooter. Despite what the lead says to the second, if the second decides to do their own thing, and as a result, makes these mistakes mentioned in the video, that isn’t the fault of the lead. It’s the fault of the second. This generalized list is made for both people who are looking to start second shooting and people who want to be better at second shooting. It’s generalized. Yes, I get it. It’s basic. But I’ve met some people who have zero common sense and we point out some very specific types of things in this video for those who might not have thought of it.

      @@exogendesign4582 You expect 2nd photographer to read mind? set rule and goal

    • @exogendesign4582
      @exogendesign4582 Рік тому

      No I don't. It just that a 2nd photographer should deliver their expected output. There's no such thing as rule and goal in the Wedding industry, throughout the day anythng can change or go haywire, it's the ability to adapt to these changes while making sure to get the expected output, some does not have common sense or doesn't know what they are doing that you literally need to spoonfeed them and these varies location per location. So learning the basics is a must in order to perform better although experience is the best teacher, I would say that practicing and burning the basics through each one mind is the greatest tool anyone photographers or videographers could have. Good 2nd shooters are a gem and a good photo team or video team is like 1 out 50. Welp Some are mentioned above, these are just the elaboration.

      @JosiahBlizzard  3 роки тому +2

      We're definitely conscious of drinking, but we've even changed this recently to if we are offered a drink by anyone in the bridal party or family then we'll take a drink. Especially helpful if you're shooting with the groomsmen and they offer you one, you instantly become cool and one of the guys. Definitely helps build relationships and create more comfortability with people.

    How long do you think it takes should I believe my 2nd shooter can do it? I feed him the basics, he can shoot decently but whenever pressures comes in he suck, he choke in clutch situation, what should I do so he should improve? I don't think getting another or a pro one would fix the problem since he's my 7th pick 2nd shooter, and past him all sucks, maybe the way I teach is wrong so I am seeking advice to improve my workflow and give a better shot selection and concept to my 2nd shooters, I currently shoot wedding videos.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  2 роки тому +2

      I mean, hard to say. I think the best way to learn and grow is to actually practice and do it. Experience is always the best teacher. I would just keep telling them whatever they're doing right, and then tell them everything they're doing that doesn't best represent your style and see if they can improve the next time. I also don't think that an inexperienced shooter should be shooting weddings so, for now, might good to find some more experienced 2nds.... OR shooter with them as if you don't need any of their footage and just have them to there to practice with you. I hope that makes sense.

      @@JosiahBlizzard that's a well put advice, my problem is I can't stand imperfection, I mean if I can do it in one go why can't they, so I should trust them until they build confidence?, I've tried hiring pro shooter with much more experienced but they are stagnant and aren't flexible in my shooting style. I do sde and has 4 videographer in my team, 5 me included as the sde editor, I also shoot throughout the day , I am probably just impatient, I've been shooting for 4years now and my 2nd shooters for almost 3years now and the other two for 2 years, do you think such time is too little to be able to do creative shots? Sorry for asking lame advice, I am trying to find a way where I can improve, and I can guide them better, coz I am probably a sucky teacher. thanks for giving your valuable time and fruitful effort reply man it means alot to me.

    A whole lot of requests for "mind reading" I don't need my seconds to read my mind. People are expecting their seconds to be able to carry them that is NOT how this works.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  Рік тому

      I disagree to an extent. While I don't think the seconds should carry the lead, I do think that Seconds need to go in to each wedding with the goal to support the lead in any situation. Most of the time I think the lead can get everything they need without the second, at least, that's how I try to work. The second is there as support, a back up, and to lighten the load. When I second shoot, I go into the wedding trying to make my lead shooter's life easier and if I can do that at every point throughout the day then I'll be good second. I agree that mind reading is difficult and it's never my expectation that they'll read my mind which is why I send a second shooting guide... but there is a level of anticipating moments that a second should be able to do well if they're experienced enough. For example, anticipating a delay for bridal party photos because the groomsmen don't have their bouttonieres pinned on yet, and then going to getting them pinned while the lead is photographing bridesmaids, or something along those lines is what I'm talking about. Anticipating isn't mind reading, but is something that comes with experience.

    Do all these tips rely on being paid well enough? Shooting as if one is the main tog but get peanuts... Is the money a factor or nah? Also when does the second shooter get paid, before or after or after the images have been delivered?

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  7 місяців тому

      As the 2nd, you have the ability to set your rate. Average for an 8 hour day for a second around me is $$55-65/hr. Depending on your experience, you can negotiate with the Primary who is hiring you. Pay is always on Day Of Event.
      2nd shooting is way easier. You show up, support the lead, you get to be more creative in a lot of ways, and then hand the images over and leave. You don’t take any of the responsibilities for how the images turn out or how the day runs. Money is a minor factor. I won’t 2nd for someone who is only paying me $25/hr. But if I’m getting paid $55/hr or $200/hr, I’m giving it my all. No doing stuff halfway. Get paid (Venmo, Check, etc) before you leave.

    1st point: Dont get the same shot as me
    4th point: Get the same shot as me incase I dont get it.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  Рік тому

      This is a poor translation of two points: the first being to not shoot from the same angle which yes, is saying don’t get the same shot as me. But my other point is not about getting the same shot, but to shoot as if you were the lead. This means not just coasting through the wedding day and creating subpar work. Shoot it as if it was your wedding day. And the sun point I made within this point was that 2nd are practically glorified backups. If you’re shooting with the same passion as the lead photographer, then you’ll deliver great work to the lead photographer and will be asked to shoot with them again. This isn’t the same as getting the same shot as me. It’s about shifting your attitude toward how you’re shooting.
      Just thought I’d clarify since this comment is contradictory to what I’m stating in the video… it’s also a video where I polled other photographers and so they may contradict each other based on their own personal preferences. But that’s not what is stated in the video…

    How do I send abunch of raw photos to the lead shooter?

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  Рік тому +1

      That is definitely something you should ask your lead. They may have a preference. Personally, I give my 2nds an SD card to use during the day and they can also use their own in their second card slot, but that way I don't have to dump photos before the end of the night or rely on them to send them to me. If I didn't do this, I would upload to Dropbox and send it that way.

    • @jeannettenicoleshipek4476
      @jeannettenicoleshipek4476 Рік тому

      generally they will give you the card they want you to shoot on and you just hand the card to them at the end of the night.
