Oscars 2014 | Christian Bale Interview: Being Fat, Bald and Inspired in 'American Hustle'
/ thenewyorktimes
There's something so magnetic and fascinating about Christian. Whatever role he's playing, whether it's a magician, a psychopath or a cowboy, you forget for a second that it's him in there. He's a total scene-stealer.
Aquarius...:)
Yes aquarius zodiac❤@gerrydelafino659
Christian Bale is a better version of Johnny Depp.
by far. they shouldn't even be compared
Viggo Mortenson beats both of them.
Bale FTW!
I agree with Amy Adams . . he is still appealing with the weight on
What an interesting personality.
He's a crazy genius. Love the fact I don't know whether he's acting in this interview or not. His crazy eyes & fantastic way he hypnotizes with his articulate expression. He's an actor in his own category of greatness.
One of the best actors ever
He's so honest! " I love it when people pat me on the back and say they enjoyed my work" just so genuine. Where I feel like some actors try and be so perfect. Absolutely love bale!
He is so gorgeous. SO.
He's so good that I doubt this is the real Christian Bale.
Lol same
How did this thought come to your mind? You made me think😅
"What if it´s a movie like batman that people remember 10 years down the line" she says it like it s bad. I bet she didnt see it! All his batman s movies are on imdb top, the movies are beautiful... I love his response!
Christian Bale, plus 50 pounds.
I love his mad eyes.
Bale is great actor.Always giving its best at performance.love his role as batman. He is and will be the all time greatest batman.
i'd go straight for Christian bale
"The rest of it is all gravy". Haha. Pure class.... He's going to become one of the greats I think.
He's brilliant.
yeah im the best.
I prefere your cousin JOHN PRESTON
Isn´t he goergeous?!
+Maike Lehfeld EXTREMELY ;D
Bale does well in dark serious characters. Not sure if he can do comic roles though. I find that Bale is interesting person but somewhat intense.
One of the best of all time. :)
He's ALWAYS hot :3
One of the best actors ever, he gets so commited to the roll he's playing It's unbelievable. Like wow.
Got to appreciate his work ethic and commitment to what he does.
He has charisma
He has always been on my list of favorite actors. Early in the millennium I was so impressed with the ones that I had seen, I went to Blockbuster (no Netflix for me then) and rented "Empire of the Sun", made when he was only 13, quite amazing.
Have seen most of his movies since then, he has such a huge range. Difficult to pick a favorite but "310 to Yuma" comes to mind, "The Fighter", "Rescue Dawn", and of course the Batman movies. I can hardly wait to see "American Hustle", and the 4 films coming out in 2014!
Christian Bale always a great actor in my heart!! Love Him!!
WAIT CHRISTIAN BALE IS BRITISH?!
He does American accents in most of his films and in some interviews as well, so he doesn't confuse people.
Oh,thanks for the heads up!
Lolz
No?
***** He doesn't do it so he doesn't confuse anyone, he puts on the accent of whatever his next role requires.
I love this dude, he's so incredibly talented
Wonderful, more wonderful Christian Bale
One in a generation, the great Christian Bale.
Great actor! can nail any part....make his acting so believable (y)
Brilliant!!!! 50 lbs+... and still beautiful!!!!! Christian Bale... and everything is awesome!!!!! Thank you Christian, for your very intense performances.... and the fun.
his intense eyes is one of many reasons i admire him
am i the only one that didnt know christian bale had an accent?
Bale should have stayed the body he had in American Psycho. Perfection and healthy.
those arms!
his persona and the way he goes about conversation is badass.
He wasn't asked to change his body?! Wtf this dudes crazy
Frank Sanchez *extremely dedicated
He should play Bond ....so handsome suave and wears his fame so lightly
If they ever make a Call Of Duty movie, he would be perfect for the role of Captain John Price.
Or maybe Gary Oldman
Now THIS is an interview. Good job!
I think he's the best actor that could pull off something like Batman 👌
Can't believe how many people don't know he is English?!
+Will Lancett Welsh
Born in Wales but his mother and father are English, to be pedantic. He considers himself English i've read before. To be fair, if you are born in Britain, you are probably a mixture of different heritage from over the years. I know i am anyway. :)
at the end interviewer was melted away.... Hence the silence and no more questioning, just pure bliss... LOl, more people could take her example male and female... Let the artist speak, no interruptions plz!
XD
Wow, first of all, never knew Christian Ble was british. Second, I never knew he was so articulate and sophisticated and humble in his opinion about his characters and acting performances. Although he might snap completely at any moment, this interview impressed me greatly. Well done Mr. Bale.
Also, Mr. Bale, shall you or a friend of you ever see this comment, hello from Norway :)
he doesn't do much on the Internet, he has two tweets, one is "Hello world" the other is "Sorry guys, I'm not very into twitter very much"
+transparent91 You might like to check out his DP/30 Out Of The Furnace interview for further insight. :)
Omfg do me.
The way he explained the best actor category is very apt
I thought out of the furnace was awesome
love the laugh at the end ^^
Im just melting
I love Bale, he is histrionic
amazing actor
He is hot! And a great actor :)
Batman starred by Christian Bale had been really awesome ...
He s not welsh. He was born in Pembrokshire, wales, to English parents working in Wales. HE refers to himself as English.
one of the best actors in the last 20 years
i think Christian with Gary Oldman are one of the greatest actors of all-time, so Chris has a deserve place in Hollywood
He's so fascinating
What's the name of the song at the end of the clip? Thanks for telling me.
At 3:55,i 'm gonna use that as a chat up line & in that voice .
never new he was english
He isn't English. He is Welsh
joel roberts Christian Bale would disagree with you in a 2008 interview:
"I was born in Wales but I'm not Welsh - I'm English".
He has English parents too.
Contrary to popular belief, when living within the United Kingdom, places like Wales and Scotland aren't really treated like separate "countries" as much as you'd expect.
Given the small landmass, England and Scotland is usually only a few hours away, and the monetary system, the television networks and a lot of the culture is largely shared.
Having said that, he's lived in L.A. since 1992 (over 20 years), and has apparently been after getting his U.S. Citizenship, so pretty soon he'll likely be more American than anything else at this point.
Benjamoose There is very much a defined line between 'English', 'Welsh', and 'Scottish'. Someone who is Welsh won't call themselves English, because it's still a different country. The collective term is British, and a Welsh person will call themselves Welsh or British. But not English.
The countries of the UK aren't considered as separate as say, England and Spain are, because you don't need a passport to travel between and they are generally quite integrated, using the same government and having the same monarch, but they are very much still separate. In fact, Scotland are currently attempting to leave the United Kingdom.
Bale is English because he was only born in Wales, but spent much of his childhood in the south of England.
As a British-American (born and raised in England), I'm aware of this. While people will proudly say "I'm Welsh not English!" and so forth my point was to explain exactly what you stated when you typed;
"The countries of the UK aren't considered as separate as say, England and Spain are..."
Bale is English because he has English parents and is generally English, he just happened to be born in Wales.
My entire point was literally that of the individuals "countries" (which if you want to get technical they're not countries at all) are no where near as foreign to one another as people from outside the UK tend to think.
Regardless thanks for adding more information for those people.
Sorry, I read your point as you saying that the countries were essentially all intertwined to the extreme that people from Wales don't really see a difference between being called Welsh or English, and 'English' is just an umbrella term for the citizens of the countries of Britain.
Scotland technically is its own country, as it was an independent country until it signed a union to be part of the UK. In fact, Scotland is currently holding a referendum to break free from the UK completely and be a completely independent country. And Wales consider themselves a country in their own right, due to having their own government etc.
Proof he is still a Human Flippin Being. Like us all.
Passionate actor
something really scary/intense about that dude, but in a good way. Fit so well in american psycho, batman, machinist, etc
greatest actor of his generation and one of the best of all time
SWEAR TO ME
'gimme the bald spot' wise words
I want his beard.
lol whats with the background music
Hearing that English accent with those plucked strings makes my pippygazzle go mad, ya hear.
That's swag
of course . you the only batman I ever loved! !!!!!!!!
whats the last music that plays on?
He reminds me so much of Matthew Bellamy
Plug.
Abe Grimm Not that there's an amazing story to tell (yet) but how fantastic would a Muse biopic be with Bale as Bellamy! Two of my favourite things ever.
I love him 😍
gorgeous

Great
Let's see Paul Allan's Christian Bale...
I liked him chubby cose` his face got more harmonious and gentle.Bale with slim face is kinda scary.
Christian Bale for Steve Jobs!
He is English living in LA for a long time and may also have developed what is called a 'transatlantic' accent. By way, English do not have an accent, americans do....
+lovenativemaricanmen There are countless English accents and dialects, you move 10km in any direction in that country and you need to learn new slang and pronunciation. Compare the Beatles to Daphne from Frasier or Michael Caine, or god forbid Sean Bean...
Fable?
I have just seen three interviews with him and in each one he had a different accent. I know it's him being method, but which is the real one!
MissMangoMovies It's not "him being method". Accents are not that simple in general and switching from one to another is not that simple, either. Might be easy for some, not for everyone. Might be easier for those who have had some training for it, he hasn't - he's not a formally trained actor.
+MissMangoMovies He has a strong Welsh accent, it won't come out unless he's either in private or playing a Welsh character.
+Tuulia Moors yeah, that's true, but it's well known the Christian Bale is a method actor.
Rob Fraser Why would he have a Welsh accent? His parents weren't Welsh. He didn't grow up in Wales and never lived there later on, either. He just happened to be born there, which is not the way anyone acquires a particular accent. :)
MissMangoMovies It's not so much "well known" but rather something that gets repeated a lot, which doesn't make it a fact. He has said he isn't and some people who have worked with say he isn't. The term is used in various ways as well, which complicates matters. Method acting is a name to a certain acting technique taught in drama schools, and he doesn't do that, nor did he go to drama school. The term is also used more casually to mean all sorts of things, apparently, associated with immersive acting - which he does.
But he doesn't, for instance, stay in character outside of filming etc. (It's pretty obvious when you see comments about him from people who have worked with him.) And his various accents outside of filming are simply a result of keeping the accent (if still working on a film) or being in the process of learning or shedding an accent. He says he isn't good enough to turn an accent on and off like a lamp.
Naturally, over time, his accent has changed anyway, which is a normal process for people living for a long time elsewhere than where they're from.
was he in some character while this interview???
"...the rest of it is all gravy."
I heard that Donald Trump and Christian Bale are best buddies for getting free hair treatments.
4:00 do I look like a guy with a plan?
3:56 sorry
Oh wow, he's English. Never saw him in an interview before. Or speak in non American accent
I he was still batman
he is bruce wayne
I heard that the Chinese believe that working with big bellied people brings them great fortune because they are seen to be surrounded with abundant food and wealth.
I had no idea he was British. Duh.
Haha he always looks like he is mildly annoyed....
i'd be annoyed too. having to speak to us lesser mortals
He's English...
welsh and proud!
he's English
+Gethin Topps he's expressed frequently that he is english and not welsh even though he was born there..
SINCE WHEN WAS HE ENGLISH
What's with the annoying comedic style music - it puts a whole trivial almost condescending tone to the whole interview. I am sure Christian would be the first to take the p out of himself so maybe he'll be philosophical about it. Just shows how the press can make anything into out of anything.
Why does he try talking like he's from London?
I heard the only good thing about American Hustle was Christian Bale.
its a decent movie but I found it very confusing, but Bale is awesome in it
That accent seems so weird coming from him....still my baby
He's welsh?
nope, English
