- Here is my interview with @TMVRaghav for the @ndtv
(1) If the reason cited by the Vidvan to 'boycott' the sabhas (including the Madras Music Academy) for the last decade was the brahminical dominance or hegemony in the Carnatic Music circuit, by accepting the very award from the same organization (that he accused), is he agreeing that the brahminical hegemony wasn't there or is he saying that things have changed now (and how)?
(2) Is it right to smear the character of an icon like Smt MS Subbulakshmi stating that her voice carried a certain sadness and that she was brahminised to be accepted? (when she hasn't made any such public statements to this effect and most importantly when she isn't around to accept or reject such thoughts)?
(3) Whether one likes it or not, Carnatic music owes its existence to the compositions of stalwarts like Purandaradasa, Kanakadasa, Tyagaraja, Dikshitar, Syama Sastri, Oothukadu Kavi, Annamayya, Arunachala Kavi, Muthuthandavar, Ramadasu, Kshetrayya, Tirunal and many more. To make a livelihood from (singing) their compositions and then coming up with arguments like 'one doesn't need to believe in their sentiments', 'it is just music and lyrics has no value', 'bhakti is just an add-on' is simply, moral travesty.
(4) If Dravidian ideology believers hail EVR (Periyar), it is their choice. But they will be ridiculed and pulled down by their ilk if they speak or sing glories about Sri Ramachandra. Turn the argument around. If a Carnatic musician sings on Sri Ramachandra, and follows it up with a rendition glorifying EVR (Periyar) who had the most uncharitable words for Hinduism, Rama, Sita, Ramayanam, Tamizh language, Tamizh Bhakti literature and had vowed to destroy temples, how do you expect a Hindu rasika to react?
(5) A handful of musicians have simply said, 'I won't perform'. This is a non-violent way to register a protest. As for those who hold the placards of 'democracy in threat' should know that 'refusing to perform' is allowed in a democracy. As a Harikatha practitioner and also an upanyasaka (who was to perform on 01-Jan-2025), I have very respectfully withdrawn from performing. This, in my opinion, is standing in solidarity with the great composers of the Karnataka Sastriya Sangeeta Parampara. Period.
With this interview, I conclude my media engagement on this topic/issue. As an upanyasaka/pravachanakarta, I have discourses to deliver, but ofcourse I am not adept enough to change the 'contours' of the bhakti world!

Carnatic music is not one of the genre of music that anyone can pick up from public sources. Yes, Bhakti (if the singer can actually get there) expressed through lyrics (which the composers have spent their life on) can not just be ignored and someone talented in musical aspects can do anything with it. When you listen to and are attracted to Carnatic music, you will start seeing this aspect. Unfortunately, we have random reformists (some fellow standing out there saying daai) with some meaningless unvetted opinions, and even atheists who have been awarded Sangeetha Kalanidhi. Instead of having even more randomness, with some Australian prime minsters view on the topic 😊, let’s go back and question Music Academy. Are there meaningful people running this institution or some political figures who should be supported no matter what.

I agree. Even as “woke leftie” myself, first and foremost in all things Ahimsa must be considered. In my own involvement with English folk traditions, whereby a black face ban and language changes are being enforced, I am still respectful of the lineage and my elders whose beliefs are close-minded. The difference here is Carnatic music is inseparable from Hinduism, as much as Yoga is inseparable from Hinduism. As a musician and yogi myself, I know all is one and one is simultaneously both unchanging and eternal change. Such is taught to us so beautifully through Raga and Tala. To taint it brings uncomfortable feelings for me.
I don’t know enough about the situation, but from what I see, the community is acting fair.

Music academy has degraded itself by awarding this Sino Wahbi liberal Woke leftist whose main aim is to break the backbone of Bhakti leader fine arts and this coming just before election could be part of toolkit initiated by ruling part of TN to start its Brahmin bashing which was lagging behind since its anti Hindu rants failed miserably .Now it is to drive a wedge in the Hindus which is just starting to get united by using fine arts this time around. Bhakti is the atman of our classical music. Anyone who had a problem with that should stay away from classical music. I is sad that people make outrageous statements themselves cannot accept even a boycott. If TMK has freedom to have his opinion about others then they too have the right to have an opinion about him. As for the anchor someone should tell him reasonable discussion is only possible with people who are reasonable.

Sheikh Chinnamoula Saheb, his disciple, Sheikh Mahaboob Subhani and his wife, Mrs.Kaleeshabi Mahaboob are great exponents of Carnatic music and first rate Nagaswaram players. They played and play traditional kritis of the great composers. Krishna may be a good singer and a learned Carnatic vocalist, but his attitude is vile and is an insult to his great gurus. Had I been in Dushyant Sridhar's place, I would have finished off my answer to the last question with a flat "no".

Anyway a Periyarist cannot be allowed to perform Music Academy which was started by some doyans ofof Karnatik music. Performing music programs in slums might be reason for receiving Magsasay awards but inthat case posthumous awards can be given to EVRAMASAMY, Annadurai and Karunanidhi for rendering services to performing arts.EVRAMASAMY even went to the extent of calling all these stage performers as prostitutes, can you agree. Music academy just cannot justify the award. The simple answer many of us have our feelings hurt and believe that music academy erred in awarding and needs to amend else we do not intend to participate in any of the events in music academy. It's a collective view of my friends circle

No individual is indispensable and bigger than the legacy of the carnatic music itself. So the point of having a dialogue itself is silly. It's not as if the world of carnatic music is doomed if one doesn't engage in a dialogue with TMK.

I haven't known TM Krishna so far. If he sings praise of Periyar who is known to have festooned Lord Rama's idol with slippers, then there is something seriously amiss about his awards and the people who gave those awards, notwithstanding his contribution towards Carnatic music.

Mr. Veeraraghav the point Swamin is saying that Culture and Bakthi. The music born out of this culture and Bakthi. Where from this TMK who is a DK fellow stand on this. All musicians invariably from any community/religion were awarded based on keeping this tradition. Why? TMK, WHY Not others who had done/sacrificed were not given this award. Simply, the reason is he is from the hereditary of TTK, who is land owners of academy. So "The Hindu Mr. Ravi, ruling this the administration of academy has granted the award. For a person who has not delivered music for ten years in any of the sabhas is being given an award, certainly there will be resentment.

What emboldens a TM Krishna and the Communists in general is that Hindus, and Brahmins have not only, not retaliated, but have openly or tacitly accepted the guilt for social oppression of lower castes in the past. If 60 years later, long after the roles have been reserved, that branding and allied perversions of the kind E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker perpetrated need to continue, then WE WANT NO PART IN IT. PERIOD.

This fellow Krishna is known less for music and more for controversies. The best way of musicians is to boycott Music Academy which has become a stage for some other agenda other than Carnatic music. Dravidian ideology falsely propagated by DMK or leftist ideology need not intrude into Music Academy.
Dushyanth Sridhar sir is 100% correct. So thankful for his presence and standing up for Santana Dharma. The foundation of Carnatic music is Bhakti. All the famous composers of Carnatic music were filled with Bhakti for the Bhagwan of their choice! It’s outrageous how TMK sings these composers songs & has a nerve to criticize Brahmins. Musical abilities are only one aspect of Carnatic music. It is the Bhakti that elevates that music. People like TMK have absolutely no right to talk about MS Amma! She’s unmatched & even the other famous carnatic music artists would agree with me. I am myself a trained Carnatic singer & the strength of the Carnatic music is in its compositions, the verses & the meaning it pours out in praise of our various gods and goddesses.
It is better to provide a list musicians in TN , AP , Telengana , Karnataka and Kerala who are yet to be feted and conferred SK title because of Academy' s prejudices. Instead of attending to it , Academy is in a rush to confer the SK title on a controversial vocalist lacking wide acceptability just to curry favour with the ruling party in TN . N Murali is N Ram's brother whose niece is ....connections are obvious. TMK has got the award as a collateral beneficiary.
