Lyrics:
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
Well, I wake up in the morning, fold my hands and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas that are drivin' me insane
It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
Well, he hands you a nickel, he hands you a dime
He asks you with a grin if you're havin' a good time
Then he fines you every time you slam the door
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
Well, he puts his cigar out in your face just for kicks
His bedroom window, it is made out of bricks
The national guard stands around his door
Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
Well, she talks to all the servants about man and God and law
Everybody says, she's the brains behind pa
She's sixty-eight but she says she's fifty-four
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more
Well, I try my best to be just like I am
But everybody wants you to be just like them
They say sing while you slave and I just get bored
Ah, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more

GOAT story teller. Full Stop.
My grandpa always listens to this song on his way to work, then on the way home listens to the Beatles "A Hard Day's Night"😂
He sounds like a right boring old bastard ! 😍
Perfect job routine/routine job soundtrack!
Same
Both classics!
Cool guy
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them
My favorite song verse of all time.
That's got to be one of the most profound things Bob said. And there are tons of them.
You need to listen to Rage Against the Machine's cover of this...they definitely enhanced the meaning behind the song with their style of music and that line is at the pinnacle with how they set it up in their version.
@@Frankmt215 just discovered they did a bunch of covers on Renegade album
The whole album is covers if I am not mistaken? Awesome listening for sure!
When they say "We're like a family at this company!" This is what they mean
True that
Someone bumped into Bob in a shop and said 'you don't know me but I know you' Bob said ' let's keep it that way'.
Humbug, nobody knows Bob. Maybe not even the guy himself.
Is a true story ?..it seems like something he'd say..🤣🤣🤣
Love it thank you lolol❤
I think Bobby hated people just love him!!!!❤
How could such a guy be named Bob?
"Everybody wants you...to BE just like THEM!" No lyric ever rang more true...the greatest anti-authority work song ever.
Actually you've got it ass-backwards. Maggie. The Boss.
@@jacobbunyan8058 up yours boss ass
As a musician I am just STUNNED at the transformation Rage Against the Machine did to this tune when covering it. I've been listening to RATM's version for 20 years and today is the first time I heard Dylan's original. Hell, I didn't even think RATM was doing a cover! Spectacular song with either style!
All of the songs on that album are covers.
I knew it was a cover, but I gotta say, I love Zach's voice so much on this track that today is the first day I actually listen to Dylan's version... After 15 years. Crazy how the two versions convey a different meaning while having the same lyrics. The original has a tongue-in-cheek, jester vibe, while ratm sounds like the most solemn proletarian prophecy
I just went and listened to Ratm's version..not bad.. reminded me of kid rock
Fuck RATM ... Bunch of woke hypocrites.. yeah they claim to be against authority but wouldn't let you see them in concert unless you were vaxxed. Bunch of losers and turn them off when I hear them on the radio🖕
Who?
Lyrics are usually secondary in popular music, but not when its Dylan. He's a poet as well as a songwriter.
I am Grandpa and I'm still listening to this good rock and roll
Is your bedroom window made of bricks
Rebel Music. Thats what this song always has been about for me
This is my favorite Bob Dylan song. Truely great.
Happy 80 Birthday Bob Dylan. Loved you from day one.
It's 2021..and this rings true more than ever!
Loved it all those years ago and love it now!
Thanks Bob for an shaping my independence that I will never put down.

Dylans lyrics were 40 years ahead of their time. Amazing.
@@austingulick Yeah, Dylan.
Dylan's lyrics are still forty years ahead of most people's time
They’re still ahead of future times!
Timeless I think

My all time favorite Dylan song!
The perfect song to listen to on the day you quit.
I will no longer pursue employment on Maggie's agricultural establishment.
wrong! "I shall no longer;"
Actually that's cuz the pump don't work cuz the Vandals stola handle
This sounds like a Thomas Benjamin Wild cover of Maggie's Farm and he does it with the full 19th century grammar and etc. I'd pay to see him do that.
It's a great place to work, the boredom of life.
Dear Status Quo, the purpose of this letter is to provide you a 30 day notice of my resignation....

It is my understanding that Mr. Dylan is also reluctant to engage in contractual work obligations with Maggie's siblings and parental entities.
I believe that he wishes to kick Jeff Bezos's ass.

When you leave the school at the middle of the day, ditching class because of a mental breakdown and you listen to this song : i can't even explain the feeling of power and freedom that conquer your mind.
You are so right! Have you experienced the beautiful free feeling that comes when you quit a job? And then the next job and then the next job and then the next job... ad infinitum: we want to learn, don't we?

Dylan thumbs his nose better than anyone. And yes this was punk.
God I love it.
It was folk

Being recorded DECADES before punk was even invented? Does that mean Robert Johnson is Death Metal? Now go to your corner and think about all the other stupid shit you've ever said online.
You probably have no fucking clue who Robert Johnson is. Even though you come on UA-cam posing as some expert on music. Your pathetic.
@Degree7 I can agree with that
Manna from heaven...
Love this song. One of its kind
love this song
but maybe not one of its kind
given the musicologist Dylan was at a young age,
I'd be surpriised if he hadn't heard at least the first & likely the second
of the 2 versions of the same (as each other) song below
I'm thinking Maggie's Farm is an updated version tweaking that tale in
Mose's version of Parchment Farm the way Mose did Bukka's version
w/ Dylan's version saying lotta jobs taste as weirdly abusive as prison
except maybe even weirder & yr only crime was needing to work to live
-- sorta like "Born in Chicago" to taste like "I was born in a prison" --
& the boisterous spirit w/ which he's saying "F*k that sh*t" I ain't goin'
which Mose was also clearly saying but in a manner suited to the '50s
more '50s understated instead of '60s electric Dylan's brazen brash tone

Amazing to me how ahead of his time. Always a step ahead. Our true trubadore. Loved this one when he first released it. Long ago. Meant something to me and many others back then.
Listening to it again with new thoughts. It means even more now. Fits like a glove for the economic tricks we keep struggling with, forever it seems.
But with current events, I could imagine many question why work so hard to enrich the wealthy, reward the legal criminals, follow the rules, and still lose your house.
This song still calls to me, even after all these years. Pertinent.
it sure didn't seem ahead of its time at the time it came out
Maggie's Farm was all the way down on Desolation Row. I think that it was paved over into a parking lot sometime in the late 80's. Hehehehe
Sorry Frankie but Why do you think that they call me Skunk. Hehehehe
Just came back from RATM version... I have no words. The geniality of Dylan with the geniality of RATM is pure geniality (i told you i was without words).
Yeah I don't think you know what geniality means for starters

The RATM version is there with the Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower and the Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man.

THE song I think of when I want to quit a job that I hate.
I think they've tinkered with it. It sounds slower than I remember, and the balance sounds different. It sounds smoother, less rugged.

People are entitled to their opinions and all that, but, people thinking Dylan was going the wrong way with his sound at this point in time has always been a bit of a curiosity to me. This is awesome
Its funny but I think Dylan predicted that would happen and I think in some sense "Maggie's Farm" is a kind of metaphor for authoritarian fans who wants Dylan to only do what THEY want (Acoustic Folk Music) and Dylan is saying he's sick of it and will do whatever he wants from now he ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more, the last lines are spot on
