- A part of the concert of 25th May 1993 at The Carnegie Hall. This is Raag Mishra Pilu and evening raga played in the thumri style.

The best is each one was clapped equally. I lately started listening to these maestro's and I can't believe what I have been missing from last 35 years. This covid made me closer to my culture and its music.
I have heard ustad zakir hussain and pandit ravi ji on several occasions but this COVID has also brought this gem up!
Oh my God, what I have heard...absolutely magnificent..at the end of the video, I literally couldn't resist my tears while respecting these music maestros..
One will need to live a long time before again hearing dueling tablas at this level. What's startling is their style difference. Hussain has absorbed a lot of Jazz maneuvers, and plays loud. Chaudhuri is an agile classical player, almost understated, but with a near avante garde edge. Absolutely fantastic playing by both.
My friend, Ustad Zakir Hussain is a young boy here, yet to absorb a lot of Jazz maneuvers that he showcases today, he has evolved as an artist all his life. Although your observations are correct, they dont hold true to this performance.. Namaste 🙏

Both are Maestros and I have no audacity to comment on their playing. However I find more finesse in Ustad Zakir Hussain’s way of playing than Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri’s. But in the dhere dhere part Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is God.

dhere dhere vs tik tik....lucknow vs punjab...both are unique...but Swapan Choudhury did more struglle than Zakir sab.coz he had a ordinary guru.
Reach that level before you say something like this

Zakir jis layakari is extremely cerebral...full of micro-beats with skillful use of outside-the-beat style of playing...keeping a count is incredibly difficult. Where as, Swapaji's playing is more muscular, physical, demonstrating taiyyari... ! Both of them are incomparable here though...
+B Hazra Completely disagree with your summary, laykari is not just about micro-beats. Each have their own style and different aspects of laykari are visible in their playing. Also they played small pieces and so had very little scope in this video. Micro-beats have always been their in Punjab gharana and so that is not strictly speaking Ustad Zakir Hussain's discovery. His contribution has been its subsequent consolidation because he is after all a genius, he can often see through things a certain way many others can't. Having said that, I will never agree that it is easy to keep a count when Swapan Chaudhuri plays. Unless you have some good experience with tabla, it is extremely difficult to appreciate Swapan chaudhuri's laykari, Even in this video, it is very much visible. I am extremely surprised at your comments. Beauty is not at all compromised in his playing either. Both of them are legends in their own right. I have had lessons from both of them ( perhaps more with Zakir ji) and have equal regards for both.
No point in trying to convince neophytes like B Hazra on where their thinking (if at all it exists) goes wrong. This character has an opinion- and a very misinformed one at that- which he stamps around on random videos around UA-cam. To be fair to him though, this opinion of his is fairly balanced if not accurate. Regarding the music, its simply a matter of individualistic styles which should be enjoyed and absorbed, not analysed and regurgitated.

Anushka can never pay what Zakirji wants, he expects some strong rhythmic patterns nd laykaris from his fellow player, in this case Anushka, which she never will b abl to. No doubt she is a good musician but she is not as skilled as a sitar player must b when he or she is the offspring of a Sitarist like Ravi Shankar ji.

WOW indeed! I thought this was a new post to find out that it is a repeat post! The sitarist accompanying his Guru is Kartik Seshadri who is Raviji's leading if not one of the Maihar's best! Please correct the name of the Kartik Seshadri-ji as it has been on the original clip posted earlier!

So, the tune it so that it sounds the best to them in that particular setting
