Sitar & Tabla Legends: Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ud. Alla Rakha: Live: London : 1981: Improved Video Quality

- These world famous musicians need no introduction. Here is a rare live performance by these great Masters in London in 1981. In addition to the 3 joint presentations, the Tabla Solo by Ustad Alla Rakha is notable in its introduction notes and voice.
The video has been improved in quality.
The opening Raga Is Charukeshi with the Gat in Roopak taal (6:40) followed by Raga Jog with gat in Teen taal 20:41, then Tabla solo by Ustad Alla Rakha in Jhaptaal and lastly a Gat in Raga Manj-Khamaj in Thumri style 29:00.
I saw him in '69 at Woodstock. half a million kids sitting in reverent silence. it was a truly transcendental experience. notably, no one there felt the need to throw anything at the performers. Rudolf Steiner, a whack job in some respects, believed that we respond to music because our souls originated in a great pool of cosmic melody. I rather like that concept.
Grew up in my teens listening to that concert (vynil). So good memories brought back!
Yes melody is food for soul. It's life and Atmic shakti
Rudolf Steiner was quite the interesting individual.
I liked the sense of humour Abbaji Ustad Alla Rakha ji. Just by gesture, without speaking, he makes himself so lovable🎉😊❤
It's a treat in the lockdown period. A blessing in disguise. It's bliss.

Born in the Bay Area, started guitar in 64', Ali Akbar College in Marin in 72' and now nearly 6 decades later I've had a full dual life of bands/original music, AND Indian Classical Music. Somebody pinch me, I've been lucky.
I attended the Ali Akbar College in Marin too...less than 6 months but it changed my life not to mention my understanding of music, I too am a working musician playing pedal steel. I too have been lucky!
Heard Ravi Shankar, Alla Rakha, an Ali Akbar Khan play concert at Madras University, 1975. Magical 3+ hour experience, suitable enhanced by Intermission Weed.
In 1978 this was my companion during my first solo stay In Aramco camp, Saudi Arabia. Moments were cherished daily by listening 2 hours. Ideal to relieve tensions.

At around 28:00 Pandit Ravi Shankar stops the audience from applauding by a gesture of his hand, so that he could listen to Ustad Allah Rakha play; shows that he values the actual music more than the show.
We pay tribute to our forefathers for having preserved this beautiful art form and for gifting it to us. What majesty

Well, I am 70 so I dont remember well. In the 70s I was working in Diamond Harbour. I was invited to listen to Indian music in Kolkota. I thing I had the opportunity to meet Ravi there. I enjoyed it a great deal. Any body knows when Ravi played in Kolkota in the 70s ? . Maybe many times since Kolkota is an immense city. By the way, I was very happy to work there and thanks the geologists I worked with at that time, for INOC.
Both r great artists and have the devotion & determination to reach this level. My father was initially learning Sitar with Ravishankar under same Guru but later gave up due to family pressure. That time my father was the only one who was allowed to touch Sitar of the Guru. Not even Ravishankar. But it takes hard work, devotion & determination to become an artist especially in those days when anything out of box was not welcome. My father became a doctor. God knows what wud have happened if he had been encouraged
Lots of patients would have suffered!

I think it was in Dharwar. Name of his guru was Ustad Mangalsingh
Thank you for sharing your insightful story
@@JoyousNightjar Ravi shankar's guru is Alauddin Khan, his father in law !
The sitar is an awesome magical instrument
you know that moment when you realize your intro titles are way too long but you leave them anyways just to waste people's time? That moment is immortalized in this video.
In these times of Corona virus, I sit here stunned listening to the recital. God bless his dear departed soul.
🙏🌹Bravo ! 🌹 😊 🙏
अप्रतिम!! अवर्णनीय आहे.. मन तृप्त झाले.
I saw them in concert in the late 1970’s and it will be forever an enduring memory
Like nectar that comes in through my ears and saturates my brain. Thank you Ravi Shankar.

I was fortunate to see this very performance , thank you for great memories , lovely music from the Greatest sitar Master, greetings from Sardinia.
Oh...jesus...ancient Indian music and instruments are fabulous..it seems like they both Tabla and sitar were talking to each other....ohh gosh...
V for Vendetta they do talk to each other. One plays a bit and the other copies it then they play the same bit together. It’s teamwork this same rule applies to every different kinds of instruments even dance and vocals. It’s very cool.
Talking together? Naa.. They are Playing with each other. . . Or singing.
Or maybe the both work in harmony to create one message.
@@cyiabsalon9720 no actually in Indian classical music there are words for every stroke Indian classical music is actually a spoken language literally. Search for tabla Bol explanations u will understand it then
It really feels like the frequency of the sitar is same as your body. The sound comes out of it really dig into your soul.

I swear!! When I listen I feel connected to source
I love that he taught, commanded, and demanded that Anoushka have her own style and tread her own path. She's the most well-known sitar player after him. His teachings allowed her to gracefully glide through an arena traditionally created for men and to shine in her own right. Even though she is his daughter, they maintain the adage that no two sitars or players are the same. They both are brilliant. Evergreen guest house in Jaipur?
I first attended a Ravi Shankar concert back in 66/67 in WSU Detroit. What an awakening! Since then I play his records constantly and it does me good. Thanks Pandit!

Bahut Manmohak .
I'm so proud of the talent that has come out of my country
Hindustani and Carnatic classical music are the sounds of Heaven, no doubt
Such a silly thing to say. Why are you proud of it? You did nothing for it. It's such a strange thing to see people taking pride over things other people devoted their lives to. Fuck outta here lol. If anyone, They're the ones who should be proud of themselves for doing what they did and achieving what they achieved. How the fuck do you have a sense of pride from doing absolutely nothing?

Saw ravi only once with some friends. Truely enchanting. Transcendent. A space in time shared with a master.
amazing sound quality for 1978 recording
Aha, Aha
No words.💐❤️💐❤️.
I love Indian music
Great memories .these deep melodies take me back to the sixtees .Thank you so much for the share .Love from Morocco
I remember a wonderful duet between Ravi and Ali Akbar Khan - Ravi chanted the names of the tabla sounds while Ali played; it was magical (so magical I remember watching them from the audience yet I am pretty sure I never made it to one of their concerts).
Raga Mishra Piloo 1982 Carnegie Hall
These 2 together are life changing, life remembering, and life worth living. Thanks. I needed that.
Hope the comment helped u. Both the music and comment helped me. Thanks to all.
Realy great and feel great to listen to this
So good. I love how the low quality of the video makes Rakha's hands just look like a blur when he plays fast.
They are singing a song ,for ur knowledge
because the picture is out of focus... and the sound is not synchronized with the picture...
They would look almost blurred even in full hd quality...that was the speed

Смотришь на игру Шанкара и понимаешь, что ещё половина музыки играет в его голове, но не хватит рук чтобы сыграть все эти ноты одновременно. Виртуоз и гений.
