It is a pleasure to watch Mike work on anything, he is indeed a real mechanic. I am lucky to have a Mechanic Mike to work on my stuff, there are so few of them around.

A mix of older and younger guys gathering in a garage to get their hands dirty, learn and fix engines is very cool. I have not seen another channel that has the mix you guys have. Mike, LIttle Dirt Bike and Racer will long remember the evenings tinkering in the garage long after Road King and Daddy Dirt Bike are gone. Right buddy? It sure beats video games and DVDs so keep it up guys and I am envious of the "fun" you all are having.

Mike is fearless. That thing is huge, probably big enough to run your whole house (and a neighbor or two as well!) You can't beat the price, that's for sure.

The way that ( number 3 or 2 ) spark plug came out reminded me of the old Lodge Spark Plugs.
Anyway, you have another good project going here ROADKING, this one can (pretty well ) power your home in case of a power outage.
    Good stuff!

I like the air cooled backup generator sets. Back in the day we worked on some Deutz powered units and they were very simple, rugged and reliable. I have seen a large supermarket with a water cooled unit as a standby, which is hardly used.

You might be able to find a Hall effect electronic ignition conversion for it.
I like points but that conversion works way better, the unit at our shop lights right off.
Hope the ol beastie has output.
Not sure about this model, but flight systems in Harrisburg pa repairs or improves a lot of the control boards and voltage regulators for all kinds of units.

Nice and clean on the inside, should be a good engine. Onan's are the best. At 15,000 watt with a 4 cylinder engine, I would be willing to bet it runs at 1800 rpm, and will be easy on fuel and quite... as most Onan's are. The generator at my dad's house has a big old Wisconsin heavy duty air cooled cast iron engine that runs at 1800 rpm. It's super quite, and runs about five hours per gallon of gas.

damn someone mentioned that POS engine ford made ,, i hate those rotten cock suckers
what was it that caused the problem with the ford engine anyway ,, I had a 2003 ford truck blow a spark plug out of it's head ,had to have the ford dealer fix it under a recall

    • @campermike8879
      @campermike8879 7 років тому +1

Depends on the year and what plug they took. Yes the ones that took the normal looking plug they were known to spit them out at ya. Then they went to some odd looking plug that would carbon up and the plug would break on the way out. Napa couldn't keep the spark pug extractor tool in stock.
I didn't want to mess with Ford because of all the problems with the 5.4L. Got me a GMC then found out how common the AFM lifter failure and oil burning problems are with their 5.3L

I got rid of that truck with 50K miles on it ,, i never trusted it after that ,,I am a diehard chevy lover myself
but i happen to have a number of fords too ,,my work trucks are all GM ,, but i do have a new ford , 2015 F150
I do love it ,, it's the 3.5 liter Ecoboost model ,,so far i have just over 60K miles with zero problems aside from some stupid stuff ,,I've been using it for my delivery/hauling service for the last 3 years and it has done wonderful ,, has loads of power ,tows really well ,
aside from my F150 all of my vehicles are Pre 1990 , old iron

With all the generators for sale out there can you have Mike give a small tutorial on inverter or conventional generators during one of the Onan Generator Restoration video series? I live in the country and have a transfer switch in the meter box that is provided by the rural electric cooperative. I have a 7000 watt generator but would like to have something larger like this one but is it going to provide the same clean or dirty power as my REC provider does? EDIT: I am worried about all the electronic circuit boards that are in moderern appliances these days.

    Hey 805ROADKING
Do a google search for the user forum Smokstak. Then go to scroll down to the Onan section. All the info that you will ever need is there. The smart people there can help you out with wiring, build sheet, how to replace the relays with modern ones.
I have the same unit running on NG. I have the high compression heads so I get full out put in KW on NG. If yours is a tri fuel unit you will get full output on gasoline and propane but not NG. Its a Onan JC 15 KW the unit I have and it was built in the year 1975. This unit will out last and out power any 15 KW Generac or Champion junk thats out there. 1800 RPM Onan built the best generators out there for years. For you Generac people out there I dare you to put 15KW load on your unit to see how long it lasts. That Onan will do that for weeks and not even complain, Generac ha good luck.
    Enjoy it guys.
I will be watching for the rest of the videos.

    • @Jeff-ow4ud

Go to the smokestack. www.smokstak.com. They should be able to point you in the direction of a new distributor. There is a sponsor there Onan Dan and he sells parts for them as well. The tri fuel carb is worth a fortune as they and not able to be found. I think I read some place that the old allis Chalmers 4 cylinder distributor was the same. Ask the smart guys at the forum.
Great site, sign up. My user is stretch67 there.

so just out of curiosity roadking ,, this is an onan genset i can tell just by the color ,but what model is this ,, i have never seen an onan genset with a 4 cylinder engine like this one ,,if i didn't know better i'd almost say that looked just like a Lister engine
that's a neat old generator set
I've got several old onan units ,, even a 2 cylinder diesel Onan from the early 50s ,,and a 75KW onan genset with a ford 300-6 engine,
just a week ago i came across a rather new Onan/Cummins generator set , I gave the guy $250 for it complete
was told it wouldn't run cause the engine was junk, wouldn't crank ,, ,,turns out after some checking and a quick inspection the reason it was removed from service and replaced is it has a stuck fuel injector ,leaked a cylinder full of fuel causing a ( Hydro Lock) ,,someone spent $20,000 to replace this generator which has 600 hours on the meter ,and all that's wrong is a $99 fuel injector ,,it's a 125KW standby diesel genset ,,it's currently mounted on a utility trailer with a 100 gallon fuel tank ,,made in 1998 it's powered by a 5.9 liter cummins turbo diesel ,, the exact same cummins used in dodge trucks ,, I've seen these used as irrigation power units for center pivot irrigation systems and have 10,000 hours on them still in service,,no clue what caused an injector to fail with so few hours ,, but most likely caused by crappy contaminated fuel

Nice ,, i wonder how common they are ,,I've seen tons of the old BGA/BFA 4KW units from this time period
mainly used in RVS ,,i haven't seen one like yours yet though
I've been collecting equipment like this for a while ,,most of what i have isn't rare stuff though

It's an onan jb/jc series. Check the tag to see which but they look similar.
1800 rpm air cooled 4 cyl.
Idk I think I've seen at least a late 60s model and I know I've seen a late 80s model.
      Great little units.
