I have 2 Tikka's, one stainless and one cerkoted. One has the Mountain Tactical bottom metal and trigger spring, the other is totally stock. I am really glad yall published the first video as I noticed some crustiness with those plugs upon my scopebase installation. I will take my scopebase off to see how well the cerakote application is.
For what it is worth, I thought your first video did not have a negative tone. Like you said, I thought it was very honest and blunt. Not an attack on Tikka, but rather an assessment of the issue and a service announcement to us customers. While I am glad Tikka did respond, it seems strange they had to express disappointment in your messaging. Hopefully this situation will make Tikka, Mountain Tactical, and us customers all better for the long run.
    Thanks for the follow up!

I bought a Tikka t3x Veil Wideland in December '23 and can confirm with the light test that the top of the receiver is not flat due to the cerekote buildup at the ends. Just took a 1000 grit sandpaper and cleaned it up while periodically checking the flatness with a Starrett straight edge. Tikka really needs to add a flat grinding step to the post processing.

Seems Cerakote is kind a fad that’s not really working out for them . If you need to apply it to a stainless action and barrel what’s the point ?? Yes I get that it looks cool as you get the colour you like . I’m thinking long term it’s not the greatest option as it will chip and discolour. That’s my 2 cents . I have cerakoted many of my own guns the last 9-10 years and even if I use my guns VERY hard and at times hunt in very rough terrain, including in mountains with lots of rocks and stones, have I still not chipped off any cerakote.
And if you experience any discoloring, then it is very easy to remove it all and do it all over again or just give it another layer.
There are some colors that have poor UV stability and can discolor over time while others are much more UV stable.
Stormtrooper White is an example of a cerakote color that has VERY poor UV stability and it turns yellow/ish rather quickly.
In general are the lighter colors worse when it comes to UV stability.
Poor prep work can also result in discoloring.
Personally I do not like hunting with stainless rifles as they make me feel to exposed and visible to my prey.
Much of that is most likely just in my head, but having been a sniper in the military for years have made me very focused on being as little visible to my prey as possible.
I also think the rifles look way better cerakoted than when they have the stainless look.
The cerakoting also protects the rifles better against staining/corrosion when hunting in coastal areas.
Even if they are stainless are they not stain/rust proof and the cerakote helps with that.

@@The_Judge300 If you just want to add some dulling or darkness to a stainless finish, all you have to do is hold the surface above a burning candle for a couple of seconds to add dark carbon to the surface to take off the metal shine. You could also just use grease sticks, or hobby paint. They all easily clean-off stainless steel or can be renewed.

And if these issues are not taken into consideration and or are on the path for correction/recall, then well I can always go spend my hard earned money on another brand that doesn’t have these issues and or cares more about customer feedback, weather it is good and or bad. My suggestion would be to epoxy bed the scope rail for this type of rifle, until they come up with a solution to this issue. That said, if I were Tikka I just wouldn't offer the lighter tone cerakote. As you say, there shouldn't be any compromise with respect to mating surfaces when it comes to precision rifles.

I completely agree on both points. I am going to use this rifle in a video showing people how to bed their rails. Not that Sako has confirmed these are all stainless, I don’t mind if I hit bare metal when I rough up the top surface of the action so the epoxy has something to grab onto.
Regarding the color, if it was me, I would not have continued with the light colors on the Veils after the initial issues in 2020. But I’m playing Monday morning quarterback.

There is essentially no need for anything other than the awesome built in rings mounts that have the little recoil lugs. No rail needed at all. He is just creating storm in a glass of water and his accuracy "issues" are more theory than reality.
The reality is also that the Tikka rifles come with an accuracy guarantee, included the cerakoted ones, so I guess Tikka are not worried about loss in accuracy as well.
Another reality is that at least 95% of all hunters are far from able to take advantage of the accuracy in the Tikka rifles and most US made ammo shoots way worse than the accuracy Tikka rifles are able to shoot as well.
Only the best shots with top factory ammo or well made hand loads are able to take advantage of the Tikka accuracy in real field use and even then will wind and lasering the distance incorrectly affect the accuracy way more than his theoretical loss in accuracy because of the coating.

Please forward a link for a 6-48 thread chaser. We’ll pass that info on to everyone.
Anyone who has studied precision rifles understands the importance trued mechanical mating surfaces. I.e. barrel to receiver, locking lugs to receiver, scope mount to receiver. This has all been studied, understood, and explained many times.

    • @The_Judge300
      @The_Judge300 2 місяці тому +1

      @@mountaintacticalcompany
I have a set with thread chasers that I bought from Brownells or Midway many years ago and I am not sure if it is possible to buy one single 6-48 thread chaser anywhere.
It is also rather easy to make your own 6-48 thread chaser from a long 6-48 screw.
How to do that is easily found online.
It is still smart to use lubrication when using a thread chaser, even if the threads are not damaged and you only use it to remove plastic.
I always use a thread chaser on new rifles before putting on the scope mounts to make sure everything is as it should before I start to screw in the mount screws.
I have experienced two times that threads were damaged from the factory.
Once on a Ruger and once on a Remington.
And yes, mating surfaces are beneficial for accuracy, but the reality is also that very many tend to make some of them way more important than they really are.
Like when it comes to the scope mounts to the receiver.
What matters the most of all when it comes to the scope, the scope mounts and the receiver is that nothing moves.
And in general when it comes to accuracy, then repeatability is king.
Tension doesn't equal inaccuracy as long as it stays the same and nothing moves.
Many have also talked a lot about how important it is to lap the locking lugs for improved precision over the years, but real tests have proven that this is almost always a waste of time and money and can often do more harm than good.
Even a Krag with one locking lug only can have VERY good precision.
My own Krag that is from 1918 shoots 1/2 moa and less 3 shot groups with my handloads and that is as good or better than most Tikka rifles and for sure better than most modern US made rifles.
And that with a scope mount that is far from what many think is ideal for precision shooting.
The real question is what precision do you really need for your practical use?
Tikka guarantee 1moa 3-shot groups or better, so if you are correct in your fears when it comes to the coating and it's effect on the precision, then the buyer can use the warranty.
If you are chasing sub .5 groups or even sub 0.25 groups, then you most likely will experience many Tikkas that will not deliver that for you, no matter if it has coating or not.
But, if this issue make you not feel confident in what accuracy the rifle can deliver, then do what you think is needed to fix it or just sell it.
Personally I would just test it as it is and see if the accuracy is there and if it is not, then I would deliver it back on the warranty.

I don`t have a clue of the material this barrel was made of, but one thing i can say for sure: the bolt-action is on another level compared to the nowadays Sako/Tikka rifles. I would never run a tap to clean out the threads unless you had damaged threads or rust on the threads. Doing this on a new firearm is asking for issues, possibly causing slop when installing the screw. Big difference between tapping a hole with a cnc mill vs using the tap by hand. I would clean out the threaded hole with alcohol and compressed air. Then thread your screw in the hole and be sure it goes all the way in with no issues. Last, using blue loctite, mount your bases...

What is “best” and what is “common” are very rarely similar.
My friends and I commonly work under the assumption everything is broken until you check it.
Everything is uneven until you true it.
We as a group, true all new rifles actions, and bed every contact point. It’s just the way we have all always done things.
However I know the common practice is to shoot it as is.

I see no reasons to tinker with any of my guns before I see any need for it.
Why do you feel the need to start to tinker with a gun before you have even tested how well it shoots or if it needs any sort of tinkering at all?
If I assume that a gun needs tinkering already when I consider to buy it, then I am for sure not buying it.
And usually I just sell a gun if it needs any tinkering for it to shoot as well as I want it to shoot.
And I am EXTREMELY *nal about accuracy.
I am not even accepting a rifle I use for Elephants and Buffalos to shoot bigger 3-shot groups than 1 moa.
Even my Krag from 1918 is shooting well under 1 moa 3-shot groups.
And the rife I am using for long range hunting is shooting sub .25 moa 3-shot groups.

For me, it never really struck me as a big deal, maybe a tiny PITA in having to clean some screw holes, if the overspray inside was an issue, it'd most likely show up when I checked it at the coun ter before buying. As to the rail mount, even though the processes are far better these days and that shouldn't happen, it's mass production from an outside vendor, it will happen. Be interesting to see if other mfgrs have the issue with lighter colours as well, the answer on that sounds a bit dodgy. None of the above would really stop me from buying one, Not buying based on this stuff, probably didn't really want it in the first place.

    • @The_Judge300
      @The_Judge300 2 місяці тому

      I 100% agree.
They/he is making a much bigger deal out of these minor issues than they really are.
And I would love to see him prove this loss in accuracy as he claims can be the result.
Even claiming it can be an issue without proving it can be an issue is VERY questionable and unprofessional in my opinion.
And this "issue" with lighter cerakote colors are the same if not worse for all mfgrs that cerakote their guns.
The reality is that quality of the cerakote in lighter colors are not as good against wear and tear and because of this is it needed to coat thicker to make it stronger. against wear and tear.
I have been cerakoting many of my own guns for the last 9-10 years and I have not used any lighter colors because of this.
When it comes to buying one of this cerakoted Tikkas, would I not be worried about any of his issues with it at all.
I know multiple hunters that have bought this gun and they are plenty happy with both the accuracy and everything else.
The reality is also that Tikka have the same accuracy guarantee for these cerakoted rifles as they have with all of their rifles.
So, if the rifle doesn't shoot well, no matter if it is because of the coating or any other reasons, you will have the warranty.
But I would be shocked if your cerakoted Tikka doesn't shoot very well if you decide to buy one.

Tikka is a production rifle. I feel like if you need everything to be "perfect," you need to spend a little more for a custom built rifle. I mean look what Gunwerks charges. They can afford to pay close attention to "every" single rifle and detail as mentioned. Yes, theres always room for improvement on the production line, but let's not forget it's still a production rifle. I have the Bergara Wilderness hmr 7prc, and the recoil lug had cerakote overspray on it, and it had to be scrapped off. It's a good shooting rifle, but i cant forget its a "production" rifle. I spent 1,100$ on it. Small price to pay for sub moa rifle and rifle that looks stunning. Tikka t3 tactical was my first rifle and has served me well over the years an recently did a barrel swap. Maybe its just me, but if everything needed to be absolutely perfect then a custom built rifle is the way to go. Naturally youd pay a significantly higher price than a tikka. Id expect the cerakoted Gen2 Ruger American not to be absolutely perfect either, same thing.

There is a basic understanding in engineering that mechanical mating surfaces need to be perfectly flat for proper mechanical strength and alignment. This way when force (I.e. recoil) is applied to the mechanical assembly, nothing moves.
This has nothing to do with scope alignment. It has to do with the long term reliability of the rifle system and to ensure your optic does not move over time and use.

Tikka's are pretty good, as they should be for what they're charging. We'll see if they fix their wobbly uneven paint job. I'm betting they won't.

Having worked with Europeans, many of whom are bilingual, they don't understand the tone and often don't mean to disparage when they are speaking.

Hearing lots of problems with begaras also. Tikka and Sako think their rifles are gold plated give the high price. Wish I could afford them

The Tikka T3x Lite is very reasonable! Throw on a couple of our Mountain Tactical products and you would be good to go! Be sure to check your local gun stores, as sometimes you can find a Tikka at a great price. Thanks for watching!

“There may be problems…” means the exact same as “there may not be problems…” That’s a throw away statement that covers their backsides.

Never owned a tikka or a “Sock-oh” (as he pronounces it) but, if I decide to drop a few grand on a rifle, it’ll be one. I’m not sure if they are the “ford Taurus “ or the “Bentley” in the conversation, but, any man with such a blown out ego as this guy hating on so many things he has such limited knowledge of, must be pretty damn good.

I have 3 Tikkas and the only one I own that doesn't have a smooth acting is the one that is cerokoted.

Great, so now they want a bunch of people who have most likely never used a tap in their life to take one and go to working on threads. Nope nothing could go wrong there.

IF, big if, you have a problem. Take a 1/6th” drill bit and literally 3 seconds and they thread right in every time. This happens on non coated actions as well. Not an issue.

As long as you buy a stainless CTR. Tikkas offers them parkerized and stainless.

You can pull it out of the stock and look at the bottom of the action. If there is an “S” in front of the magazine well, it’s stainless. Those 24” CTRs are great shooters! What cartridge is it chambered in?
