    Nostalgia is always based on age, as people get older they become nostalgic for things they grew up with. I was born in '82 so I have memories of NES through PS2 era. People born in '92 are less likely to be nostalgic for NES and more nostalgic for N64. In 5yrs time people will be buying up all the PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube stuff. I remember a time when Elvis memorabilia was huge, now all those collectors are either dead or retirees and you can't even donate that stuff, same thing will happen to games in 30yrs no one is going to want my NES collection.

      Problem you have is the fact that in the next generation consoles will be digital only. This sets up retro systems to possibly still hold value and want since the retro consoles all have physical games. It'll be interesting how it turns out. I think it might end up like vinyl records that retro system gaming will about die off for a long while and then get hot again because it's something you can hold in your hands and not digitial. Now whether or not the graphics will hold up for gamers in 30+ years is another story. The graphics might be too bland for future gamers.

      You’re spot on-these things have predictable patterns to them. Even though I was older by the time the N64 was new (20s), I’ve always been a gamer and loved that system back then and love it today. That said, the N64 hits different to the generation that literally grew up with it and the same can be said for the next few generations of consoles. It will only be a matter of time before the hot thing will be PS3 and Xbox 360 games.

    I agree with Reggie. I've seen plenty of people who collect cart-only N64 games and some people have their own way to show off their collection, whether it be custom cases or custom labels or anything like that. As for there not being a lot of good games for the system, well, I haven't played every game the system had to offer, but out of all the games I owned, I enjoyed just about all of them. I know it's up to personal preference, but I feel like the system does have more to offer than some people may think.

  • @gamebuck
    @gamebuck 4 роки тому

    Reggie makes solid points about the N64. Ex's arguments that people won't want to deal with boxes and manuals and inserts are all well and good, but that doesn't mean people won't collect for it. Just because it's "hard" to get the boxes and manuals in good condition doesn't mean someone won't collect for a system all together, and I see so many people (myself included) going mainly just for cartridges. And I feel like I see way more people either having or going for complete N64 libraries (cart-only a lot of the time) than probably any other system right now. The small size of the library makes it an attractive one to go for for a lot of people, especially since the kids that grew up with it are now the ones with disposable income wanting to recapture their childhood and buying back those games.

      Overall the N64 is one of the least worthy retro consoles. The Gamecube alone made most of the 64 lineup obsolete, then the early shitty 3D to boot.

  • @DCRStudios
    @DCRStudios 4 роки тому +1

    Reggie is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about the N64, first of all, the kids that grew up in the mid 90's are getting nostalgic with the console, second, most of them DOESN'T CARE about complete in box or manuals or posters or whatever the f the n64 had, they only want the GAME , the cartridge.
    N64 is an easy console to collect for, and I can say that because a lot of my friends and relatives are collecting for the N64 right now, they are aware that the boxes are beaten, they only care for the game, next is going to be the GameCube.
    So I'd say that the cheapest console to collect right now is the PS3, Wii and 360, because in 5 or 7 years, men, the prices are gonna be sky high.

  • @RonkeyRong
    @RonkeyRong 4 роки тому +5

    I can attest to the 64 hype. My generation loves it because it was part of their earliest gaming memories. I remember many 64 games being much cheaper a decade ago.
    Personally, I'd recommend gamers wanting N64 titles to get Japanese versions of the games that aren't text heavy. Stuff like smash and kart games are a fraction of the price and play fine on a NTSC N64. However they've started to increase slightly as well due to more people realizing that they are interchangeable to a degree. But if you want boxed copies there is literally no easier way.
    As for Dreamcast, I prefer many DC versions because I prefer having the 240P output that it provides over many remakes and remasters(at least for fighting games). Its way more easier to buy or build a stick than it is to acquire 240p versions of those same games in other means. Hell the Dreamcast is still the only way to play rival schools 2 and power stone1/2 easily on a tv for me

    I went to the Swap Meet in PDX back in January of this year and experienced first-hand how ridiculously expensive Saturn Games have gotten. I mean, I knew they were becoming spendy but literally every title I saw was more than $100. Some titles like Shining Force and other RPGs on that console are on another level of expensive and I hope those prices come back to down to earth at some point.
    NES and SNES were definitely hotter a few years back. I love those consoles but what got me away from buying SNES games were that so many games I wanted were just too expensive and it made it hard for me to find good deals and collect for it regularly without breaking the bank.
    A ton of forums and groups I am in or have visited are clamoring for PS1 titles, some of them have gone way up in price. Not sure how hot this system is but I feel like there is a lot of people collecting for that right now.

    I sold my childhood video game collection about 8 years ago when I had to pay for a wedding... Now I just recently started getting all the game I had as a kid, only this time around in "Complete in Box". With the exception of the games virtually EVERYONE wants, its been super affordable. So I don't disagree with Reggie when you put it in that perspective. Most games I am getting are in the $20-50 range. I've been focusing on NES, SNES and Genesis. I think what people underestimate is how much of this stuff is actually out there. The top 75 most printed games for the NES sold at least 1,000,000 copies! Granted, many of these games are the ones in the highest demand and there isn't a lack of supply... but a million copies of something is a lot for such a small subculture of people that "A" want it and "B" don't already have it. Take a game like Super Mario Bros. 3. That game sold 18,000,000. Sure there are more than 18,000,000 gamers out there, I think in North America the number is 203,000,000 gamers. Now how many of those people collect NES? How many of THOSE people want Super Mario Bros. 3? How many of THOSE people don't already have it? In the age of "other ways to play it"... I can see the appetite of these things going way down, and the only thing that is still kicking in screaming is the what I call "rarification" of widely available things. You have the cream of the crop... those highly professional graded copies of a game. Then you have the "New In Box" games, then you have the absolutely Mint Complete games, then you have the more banged up complete copies, then the partially complete copies and then raw carts. Raw Cart level is nearly worthless in scale for most games. With 18 million copies of Super Mario Bros. 3 being out there in various conditions and variants and the hundreds of ways to play it... demand is low and value is highly manipulated because of how many of these are being horded. Sure, games like Little Samson, or even something a little more common like say, Mega Man 1 will always cost you more than most, but a lot of it are only consumed by completion. Nobody has any nostalgia for a large portion of the NES library. Who really wants "Anticipation"? Probably less than 1% of the NES gaming collector.

    • @mjcook3922

      I attended a video game convention last year and I literally saw sellers with two dozen copies of the Legend of Zelda in varying degrees of condition. Mostly all were priced around $20-25. All they do is look at the going rate on price charting and assume everyone wants to buy a copy for that price. Ebay and UA-cam has contributed a lot to the price spikes as well as the completionist fad but also hoarding, reselling, and outright price manipulation has contributed as well. A lot of sellers and stores have dozens of copies of games that nobody wants but people that live far away from game stores will buy games online for premium prices.

    3 systems right now are getting hit super hard for the same reason. Saturn, DC, and Gamecube, 1, generations that grew up with them are going back and buying them, but the biggest impact is the fact that the entire world that DID have those systems and those games are making UA-cam videos and the like essentially saying "Hey, for all you people that bashed and dumped on this system, look at all these sick-ass games you didn't play." The market is exploding for that reason. Dudes like Scott The Woz, Metal Jesus and others educating the masses about those have sent people into a frenzy. PS2 and Gamecube have both exploded in the I grew up with it sense (felt no where near as hard for Xbox), but Saturn and DC (more so just because of the actual lack of market penetration into the average home, think Wii U for example) are definitely getting their hard push by the community providing content about those systems in a big way.

      With a Kaico HDMI adapter it looks great! I bought a Dreamcast from Gamestop for about 50-60 dollars a few months ago, its very easy to just burn games onto CD-R's and play them directly on the dreamcast. I changed my dreamcast cd-reader for a SD card reader called a "gdemu". So i have a couple sd cards with all the dreamcast games loaded and love the system. Also had a dongle so i can hook up PS4 and PS3 controllers wirelessly or wired.

      Dreamcast natively supports Hi Resolution output via D-Sub/VGA. Even tho many HD TV sets may no longer support that connection, there are many HDMI converters in the market today that are a decent alternative at a budget price. And with DCHDMI mod, you can output Dreamcast at an amazing 960/1080p resolution. The system was ahead of its time in that respect.

    If go to a gaming/otaku convention and bring Mario party,kart,64,Zelda's,smash Bros,GoldenEye,banjo you are guaranteed to move them FAST😂 I grew up with them and played them all to death so I've been into finding all the amazing teenage/mature/obscure/import/ RPG/shmup PlayStation one games that I had no way of getting as a kid when I got the PS1 when it released. Publishers had a field day on that system(:
    I mean there is a Blaster Master on PS1!! And it is really fun and was cib for under ten bucks. Gems everywhere in the PS1 library.

    I think it's important to realize for retro cartridge based games, many collectors (myself included) aren't as picky about CIB, because even a big collection of loose carts is nice and impressive, unlike CD based games where if you just have a big CD Wallet full of loose discs, it looks like crap, so CIB is way more important for those games to be "display worthy". So yeah it's harder to acquire CIB for those older cartridge systems but it's also not as universally important to collectors as it is for collectors of CD-Based systems.

    Collecting video games can be very expensive and take up a lot of space. A friend wanted to start buying a lot of Super Nintendo games because those were his favorite games as a kid. Not to collect them but to play them. I told him there was a way to get to play all the SNES games he wanted and not to have to pay a cent to get them and not have to store them. Download a SNES emulator and download ROMs of the games. He did it and said I saved him thousands of dollars. Plus I said no matter how many SNES carts of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World he buys it is nothing new but exactly the same old game he remembers. I told him there are ROM hacks of these classics that hackers change the games and you can play new different versions of the games. There are fan retranslations of Chrono Trigger closer to the Japanese Super Famicom version and new versions where you can save Schala and one with a completely new area added. A completely playable 1999. I told him there are ROM hacks, at least a dozen of them, that are completely new versions of Super Mario World. The best reason not to get into buying a lot of original carts is you can play the games for free on ROM hacks on your computer with an emulator. I have told a lot of my friends the advantages of ROM hacks and they sold all their video games to get the cash and free up the space. All the Super Nintendo games you ever wanted on one little thumb drive AND completely new versions of old favorites. .

    Sega Master System should have gotten mentioned as an example of console that is not likely to see a resurgence in interest - but perhaps that goes without saying. My impression is that Genesis hasn't died as much due to the original boxes being so durable that complete in box collecting is a thing.

    @radicalreggie I agree n64 is hot right now as far as collecting. It's seems to me collecting in gaming is based on an age income ratio. For example, Folks currently in their 40s now, have for the most part, reached a level where they have disposal income. This leads to collecting beyond the current gaming generation, those same folks were kids in the NES days (80s)/ Sega Genesis (90s) days/ ending in Ps1 , thus, they have poured considerable disposable income into completing collections inspired from their youth. If this "formula" is consistent, the next collecting trend would point to N64/PS2, as a next generation of young adults become full-fledged adults with disposable income, their youth is of the time of PS2/N64/NGC.... If this hypothesis is true, then you can expect the N64-128Bit collecting to be big in the next 4 to 7 years. In short: folks tend to collect from their childhood. These late 30s to 40s have completed their Gaming Caves....in 4 to 7 years it's time for a new group of late 30s/ early 40s to complete their Gaming Caves from gaming systems(consoles) of their childhood.....the N64 is a transition in generational collecting, the last part of childhood gaming for some, the beginning of gaming for others. PS...I don't think for general collecting that boxes are a necessity, definitely for disks (protection/storage), but carts can be stacked or put in a stand.
    PPS.... Dreamcast came and went too quick for younger gamers at the time of release, to really have a bond with the DC.... I think more will have that with PS2 or even the GameCube
    Love the channel, love this series of interview/discussions!!!!

    All of these things are cyclical. If you were 10 back in 96 playing Mario 64 you're 34 now. Mid thirties is about the point people start pining for their youth. So the N64 being popular now makes sense for that generation. Gamecube is also trending up but don't sleep on Wii. Wii kids are now working adults so get ahead of that curve before it hits in the next 5 years.
    Most of us NES/SNES kids are 40s, even 50s now so we already hit our peak of nostalgia collecting and probably have most of what we want. I got the bulk of my collection late 00s to early 10s before the prices skyrocketed and collecting became more of a competition against resellers. Once prices skyrocketed the joy of collecting got sucked right out, for me anyway. And priorities just shift at a certain point.

    Well there are several factors. One I agree with is the price being too high and most people already got what they wanted.
    I just collect what I want and what I can afford. In my opinion, I think its emulators that truly stalled on most cartridge based games.
    Emulation is still pretty high, so right now what seems to be the thing people are going after are the portable emulator systems.
    I just collect games, if I can find it complete with box, I'll buy it, but isn't necessary, as long as I have the game.
