Drexciya really pushed and expanded what you could do as a dj. It really put your mind in a different place. Sometimes we would get in my car and drive outside the city, out into the countryside, and this is the kind of stuff I would listen to. It was a a part of the soundtrack for escaping Detroit for a while.
This is fantastic. Thank you so much for keeping their story alive for the generations that missed out on this wonderful time in electronic music history.
Thanks for recognizing some of the true pioneers of electronic music in the US. Would be wonderful to see more on Detroit techno in general (Mad Mike Banks interview please... ?)

There was also a side project that the Drexciya Duo were involved with called Doppler Effect, think a more robotic Kraftwerk fronted by a female vocalist speaking in monotone. It had to be heard to be believed.
I remember when I heard hydro theory and bang bang for the first time three years ago on youtube. My neck hair raised and my whole body got goosebumps, I was immediately captivated by their sound... learning more about them just deepens the meaning of their music to me and creates new fantasies about Drexciya and the entire journey their mythical civilization has made
This fed my soul. This was beautiful. Stinson and Donald were such a huge influence in my life and are so underrepresented. Thank you for making this! You guys HAVE to do a follow up with Dopplereffekt and all his associated acts! Much respect.
Koekebakker Don’t know if you picked up any of their albums yet, but I discovered them back around 09 or 2010, when the first “Journey Of The Deep Sea Dweller” collection of their trax came out, and I fell in love. I ended up buying each subsequent JotDSD releases, four in all, and honestly, if you’re not looking to be a completist and just want a great collection of their trax, I highly recommend.
Damn this video isnt even 10 minutes long and it is already the best thing the Resident advisor channel has ever done. GREAT JOB keep it up and make more.
Cybotron3070 does not get the same recognition as his partner, though (when referencing techno history). I have a hypothesis that Rik Davis is the Unknown Writer.
R. M Don’t think Davis did any other records solo as 3070 but I’m sure he co-wrote Time Space Transmat with Juan.....after that he was finished with music maybe?
I find it intresting listening to artists like drexciya and dopplereffekt whilst in run down areas with bordered up houses, dirt and litter everywhere. It feels like this music is the sound track to this scenery and in a way a private escape from the reality of life in areas that are run down, with the arists coming from Detroit that makes sense.
I was listening to Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile yesterday- and realized that even after listening to this duo for years, I missed a reference to the Methane Sea from my first favorite rock-n-roller. Rik Davis aka Cybotron3070 wrote a track called "Methane Sea" which I now believe pays homage to the idea Jimi and Drexciya are getting at- an idea illustrated by another Hendrix track, 1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be from Electric Ladyland: 1983 is not a year, it is a reference to United States Code 42 USC 1983- which basically gives the right to seek reparations when any authorized group, working in the service of the United States, works outside of Its authority. Otherwise, Drexciya was cognizant of Afro musical history, something I'm still learning about; most of all they have taught why some people identify as Afro-American rather than African-American. They've led me to Sun Ra, RammEllZee- and gave me further understanding of the continuing work of Gerald Donald, DJ Stingray, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and perhaps even a (supposedly) caucasian woman who calls herself The Doubtful Guest.
Drexciya didn't just make music, he made his music art trying to transmit something to people, that's something that nowadays in the music industry isn't done anymore, you just want to make a lot of money producing repetitive and empty music from my point of view, thank you James and Donald very much for making your music art.
@ROOTSCONTRA lol man don't even bother responding to these guys. They usually don't make the effort to try and hear for themselves what's up today on the techno and electro scene. And if they do, they do it with some dark devil in their mind saying "yeah but remember it will always be better before". This guy probably doesn't know Stingray plays loads of new stuff as well in his sets.
First Burial, now Drexciya's history. Thank you resident advisor for making these awesome documentaries. Are you planning to make more videos? Can you make one about Aquacrunk?
@@mr_diatribe2324 no way, we meet again. I am of the conclusion now that you tube recommends me the videos you have viewed and commented on. Although I am already a minor drex fan.
Amazing break down of a very special group. Only re listened to Stinsons interview with Liz Coperland...very inspirational poetic and haunting seeing that he passed away months after recording the interview.
At about 2:50 ... pretty big correction. First off, Sirius is a star, not a planet. (Triple star system, actually) Secondly, Sirius is in Canis Major, not Orion.
