Cold Waters on Steam:
store.steampowe...
Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

MMFN Donald "Dinky" McNubbins was sitting Sticks when they found the convoy. One minute, he was wondering if breakfast would be French Toast or Pancakes, and the next minute the General Alarm was blaring as all hands ran to their battle stations.
*DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG DONG*
Dinky was already on station, fortunately. Other sailors rolled out of their racks, threw on their poopy suits, and ran to their stations, blinking the sleep out of their eyes as they went. The Captain strode onto the bridge. "All right Weps, what do you have for me?"
Lt(SS) "Torptuga" Tortuga looked up from the tactical display. "Multiple surface contacts, sir. We're still working on solutions, but so far we've identified at least two Chinese warships and three transports, all at long range. I think this is our target."
Over the next few minutes, a steady stream of reports rolled in from Sonar as the whole convoy was detected, identified, and tracked. Crewmen throughout the ship broke out damage control equipment, donned firefighting ensembles, manned up sound-powered phones, shut hatches, and otherwise prepared the ship for combat. Soon USS Seawolf was ready. All stations manned for Battlestations Torpedo. Then with an ear-popping *WHOOSH* of air, the first torpedo tube unleashed its projectile into the sea. *WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH* three more deadly projectiles raced towards the distant convoy. The sudden change in ballast caused the Seawolf's bow to rise, but the Diving Officer of the Watch, Chief Stearns, anticipated the change. With a few quick words to MMFN McNubbins at the helm, the Seawolf stayed on course.
Tense minutes passed. The PLAN launched a volley of ASW rockets when they first detected incoming torpedoes, but they all fell short. the Chinese estimates of the Mk48 ADCAP's range (and American sonar capabilities) was off by a significant margin. First the enemy destroyer went down. Then, one by one, the three enemy frigates caught a bad case of Torpedo. Lt Torptuga followed up with a barrage of missiles to finish off the landing ships. Every harpoon in the magazines, followed by a single TASM. Alas, this last shot proved one too many, as the large smoke trail from the launch motor was spotted by an ASW helicopter.
"Conn, Sonar, enemy helo sounds getting louder, and fast!"
Lt Torptuga reacted fast. "Emergency deep! Retract the towed array. Dive, make your depth one thousand feet."
"Make my depth one thousand feet, Dive aye." Chief Stearns replied in a calm voice. "Helm, ten degrees down bubble. Chief of the Watch, take on three thousand pounds."
"Ten degrees down bubble, Helm aye." Dinky McNubbins breathed a sigh of relief. If Chief Stearns was calm, then everything would be okay. Then Sonar reported another explosion, sounding the doom of the final transport.
"Got 'em! Wow. Got the whole kit and caboodle." *PING* "Ohh god, torpedo in the water. All ahead flank, cavitate!"
Dinky raced his hand for the Engine Order Telegraph, to ring up the ordered bell. As the whole ship surged forward under the instant power of a nuclear reactor, all hands on the bridge buckled their safety belts in anticipation of high-speed maneuvers. He couldn't help but smile as Lt Torptuga quipped "Turns out this helicopter didn't like the fact that we sank the whole entire fleet. They're not going to let us have a completely quiet day."
Another ping echoed through the hull. "Let's level off and pick up our speed. And then... the Big Maneuver! I hope all hands are ready." he rubbed his hands together in anticipation. "We've trained for this. We've had a really good day, let's not have it end poorly."
Cold sweat poured off Dinky's hands as he gripped the control yoke. Everyone in the ship would be depending on him. It would be a hard turn, followed by a steep dive. He didn't understand how the turn would help, but he'd heard that a good submarine could dive faster than a torpedo. That had to be worth something. And according to Chief Stearns, it was standard in the manuals. The whole US Navy wouldn't practice The Maneuver if it didn't work. But what if-
"Left full rudder!"
he yanked the control yoke full left, and the massive hydraulic rams controlling the rudder swung it over. Another ping echoed through the hull.
"Shift your rudder! Thirty degrees down bubble!"
With another quick move, he jerked the yoke full right, then shoved it forward. His hands trembled as he tried to push farther, until Chief Stearns touched his shoulder. "Easy there, son. You can't push the sticks through that bulkhead, it won't go any farther."
The whole ship, having just begun to turn left, shook with the effort of forcing both the rudder and diving planes against the stupendous forces of water moving at thirty three knots. The water, unused to this abuse, formed a swirling vortex of chaotic eddies and pressure waves behind the submarine. The torpedo's next active ping ran right into this mess, echoing back and scrambling its sonar. Its onboard computer quickly shut down the pinger, and began a pre-programmed evasion to travel around the knuckle in the water. Several seconds later, it started up its pinger again, and began looking for its target. But the submarine was gone. It cruised in confused circles for several minutes, then self-destructed when it reached the end of its fuel.
USS Seawolf, meanwhile, made good its escape, cruising north at maximum depth. As the chopper faded into the distance, the crew stood down from battle stations. Eventually, the next watch team arrived, and Dinky McNubbins finally found out what was for breakfast. Waffles, with strawberries and cream. It was a long line for breakfast, since there was only one waffle maker, but McNubbins didn't mind. It was a good way to start the day.
*Notes:*
MMFN: Machinist's Mate Fireman. An E-3 rated mechanic, sometimes called a Muffin.
Sticks: Helmsman/Planesman. The people who steer the ship. The nubliest of nubs, they operate under strict supervision of the DOOW.
General Alarm: 25 dongs. That's a lot of dongs.
Weps: the Weapons Officer. Head of the Weapons Department. An O-3 on his second sea tour.
(SS): the suffix attached to the rank of any qualified submariner. A coveted badge of skill and honor.
Hooray! Torptuga is back on the bridge! I do love this game, as much as I love RTW. And what a great way to start the series.
I must say, though, you need to pay attention to your target solution quality. It's very easy for a submarine to tell the direction of a target, but getting accurate range estimates is much more complicated. At low SOL values (shown in the bottom left corner, just above the minimap) the range estimates will be very inaccurate. This causes the dots on the mini-map to be far from their correct position, which in turn causes your torpedoes to be aimed wrong and either activate too soon (and possibly run out of fuel) or too late, and completely miss. You start to get course estimates somewhere near a SOL of 50-60%, but you won't get an accurate range estimate until around 85-90%. This inaccurate range caused you to nearly miss your entire first volley, it was only luck that they were so far away to begin with. What you need to do is perform a TMA (target motion analysis) turn to refine your data.
A TMA turn is quite simple. You turn your ship such that the enemy crosses your bow (or stern). For example, if the enemy was about 20 degrees off your starboard bow, you turn right until he's about 20 degrees off your port bow. This gives a very different perspective on the enemy, and allows the fire control technicians to do some very complicated math to calculate range with a much higher accuracy. Just remember that if you're only tracking the enemy with your towed array, it'll take time for the array to straighten out and start providing useful data again. While it is possible to estimate range without a TMA turn, it isn't very accurate unless you have a positive ID on the target and they are travelling at high speed.
Basically, pay attention to your target solution quality, and try not to launch unless the fire control technicians are above 80% confidence in the solution.
hehe... Muffin McNubbins...
Thanks Kotori. I saved this for my reading as I went to sleep, intending to reply then, but someone decided to throw up on me and have a rough night. Finally I can respond and say "thank you for posting!" -- it's great fun to read, and I thought it was really the icing on the cake that you incorporate Torptuga's comments into the RP.
Duly noted on the feedback. This game doesn't penalize low SOL targeting enough, I think. Even if I miss, okay I just fire another one. Not good practice though, I understand.
This was one hell of a tale, you ought to consider writing short stories my friend!
From one ETV3(SS) my favorite thing to do, probably second from standing lookout was driving the boat as the helm, it was like a zen to me.
Can you help me? I remember a long time ago tinga game just like this maybe it was his game it had the same amount of destructive abilities but you weren't stuck to a sub I believe you could build your own ship and I think maybe you could download others. Remember seeing 1 weird ship the UA-camr built versus the Titanic. I it looked really close to this game. Could you help me find the game?
Those active sonar pings still scare the shit out of me.
In this game ...What you should really be scared of is a wild helicopter+plane appearing out of nowhere bombing you.
TLAMs are only useful against land-based targets. TSAMs are only useful against surface ships. L for 'land', S for 'ship'. They're cruise missiles
That's right, they are Tomahawks. There's even a nuclear variety!
@@TortugaPower Though sadly you don't get to use that one, imagine shooting a 150 kT nuke right into the middle of an enemy fleet.
@@zuthalsoraniz6764 It wouldn't be very useful. Nukes are /terrible/ at proximity kills on surface warships, and on a direct hit, a conventional Tomahawk is a one-hit-kill on all but the largest vessels anyway.
@@macdjordWell considering they would evaporate a large area of water causing extreme disturbances and turn the ships into a literal oven. It seems like a pretty easy way to delete an enemy. That said tomahawks suck ass, the US fires like over 50 of them and doesn’t even disable a single Syrian air base. At like $2 million a pop that’s nothing but a giant waste of money
chinese convoy: "why do i hear boss music?"
Game over.
*Megalovania begins playing*
I once lost a Los Angeles third flight because I was in 1050feet for too long. Scary numbers here.
Wow, that's good feedback! I didn't realize it was a timer thing.
Unless you have been there or have the clearance, you will never know how capable the Seawolf class really is.
it will be certainly loud as any other US sub ;) cant stop a nuclear reactor, and pumps always make noise. may be hunters, those are the assassins: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_212_submarine
@@janeymers7154 It will certainly be as loud as any other US sub......... I wouldn't assume anything that you don't know with a Sub... They only made a handful because of their price and it may well be the price that gave a capability to them that goes beyond "any other US sub". Who knows "unless you have been there or have the clearance". All I know is they are massively classified, considered the dread of any other Navy in the world and if they were underwater Bass Drums well.... I doubt they'd have the reputation they do.

@@gotanon8958 not when they are on the battery
Blimey, four years since I watched you do this series.
The power of one u-boat is unbeliveable! I had no idea.
Difference between TLAM and TASM: Tomahawk Land Attack Missile and Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile. The TASM is easier to shoot down due to speed, but usually is a one-shot for 99% of targets. There will be some targets that take more than one Harpoon to kill.
The time acceleration sometimes gets wonky. I've been driven into a panic on several occasions because my time acceleration stopped.
Did it come off like I don't know what a TLAM and TASM is in this video? I know them well. They even have a nuclear variant!
You said something somewhere near the middle of the video that suggested you weren't sure which Tomahawk was which.
@@TortugaPower 28:28 "I don't know the different between the TLAM's and the other ones (implying TASM) so... we'll load a MOS."
Caught red handed not knowing the difference between a TLAM and a TASM. Exposed as a liar. Tarred and feathered. Run out of town. Get REKT boi.
Reminds me so much of my younger days playing Red Storm Rising on my Commodore 64. Great stuff!
The devs would be happy to hear that, as they wanted this to be the spiritual successor to RSR.
@@TortugaPower definitely looks and feels like RSR but in our modern times with an updated story and graphics. I'm gonna have to dive into this one sometime. In the meantime, enjoying your series.
YES! I loved those days. Would play with me best friend. He was the captain and that son of a bitch got us sunk alot. 🤣
If you guys remember Red Storm Rising, what game could I play with that same intensity and depth? Also Carrier Command, did they ever make a modern version that can still be played? I loved those games.
Cold Waters is amazing.Absolutely love the Soviet subs in the game.
I think I've only played as an Alfa.
Yay more Coldwater
It's back!
Yay more cold waters
You must complete all mission perfectly pls
Not asking too much there
TortugaPower why is that too much?
Yes a new Cold Waters youtuber to binge watch!
yay this must have been my favorite series of yours so keep it up
Glad to hear it, and I hope you enjoy this new one.
"Luhu .... what's that?!?"
My guess would be a guided missile destroyer.
Hey Tortuga just started this series and am binge watching! Love it, keep it up!
Great to hear Evil Six! It's a little different than my usual, but fun
Glad to be in on the ground floor of this series!
The keel of the series, that's right! =)
I miss Red Storm Rising. Still a fun game though. That's a lot of targets, well done in an almost clean execution.
Clean execution is not something I'm very good at in this game. Mostly, I'm good enough at dodging the aftermath =)
This submarine simulator looks good, I'm still playing Silent Hunter III, World War II theater. Need to come up-to-date with Seawolf!
Would have been interesting to have British submarines with their spearfish torpedos
Watching this video is better than watching _The Hunt for Red October (1990)_ movie! Great game
I just finished your last RtW2 series and Victory at Sea: Pacific. I'm really looking forward to this one.
More action-oriented, less deep thinking needed on my part.
Sub Brief is the go to guy on this stuff .
Reminds me of "Red Storm Rising" back in my C64 days!! 👍😀
I believe it is considered the spiritual successor to it.
Hate that high sound of searching torped but only if searching me.
They were really close to the US held islands. Chinese survivors will have probably been rescued by a US frigate or destroyer force as POWs, or abandonned by the Chinese for being too far away to mount an effective rescue in time. If they got lifeboats up before sinking they'll be fine. Currents will bring them close to land(And outside of China's operation area) within a reasonable time period, upon which Taiwan or US forces will fish them out the water before they drift onto the pacific.
Of course if they didn't have the time to deploy lifeboats it will be rough, and modern ships don't really leave wooden debris to float on.
Good mission, and entertaining to watch
Cold waters is the best sleeping aid.
Love the vids keep it up 👍
Thank you!
I've been considering this game but can't get away from wolfpack, I hate how most sub games are third person, nothing beats that feeling tension caused by blindness and claustrophobia relying on other systems to navigate and find targets.
Glad to see you're back with Cold Waters!
It was only a matter of time.
never clicked so fast
I'll need reflexes like that to keep the Seawolf intact.
@@TortugaPower just fly it. Torpedoes cant hit you, if you aren't im the water
I thought I was watching wolfpack. Glad to have stumbled upon your channel.
Another victim of UA-cam's algorithms!
NEVER shoot a Moss first!because it alarms the Escorts immideately! You should shoot Mosses only when you are already ATTACKED!A Passive Torpedo can make it close to his target before it activates!
I think that makes sense in real life, but I've found in this game that escorts don't always react to a MOSS, or if they do they will waste their ASW weapons on it. Possibly this is contrary to what is sensible in real life, but launching a MOSS only after you are acquired, the MOSS is still close to your submarine when the torpedoes acquire it, and then when the torpedo moves through the MOSS, it can turn and acquire you.
Glad to see you're back into this game, Tortuga!
It was only a matter of time.
TASM is the anti-ship version of the Tomahawk missile, compared to the TLAM.
That's right, and they even have a nuclear variant!
I was about to write a comment when I heard him say "I dont know the difference between TLAM and TASM" at 28:30 and the I saw yours.
Great suspense and hope you continue.
Thank you. Yes, this will be a full series.
Gotta love this game!
And many do!
to not loose the wire you should not take rudder more than 10degree,left,right,up or down! and not drive faster than 10 knots!
And try not to shoot across the bow!
i would hate to be the officer that ordered the ships to proceed with the mission then find out the entire force was sunk
i think he would be like: "say sike right now"
and tortugan is just like: "allow me to introduce myself"
I’d say the ships are at fault! If you can’t sink a single submarine with an entire task force you deserve your fate
Me living in South Korea, watching the 1984 campaign: interesting
Me watching this series: fuck
It's not like there's climbing geo-political tensions between the U.S. and Chin..oh crap.
always drop a noisemaker just the moment you start evading a torp! :)
I'm very frugal with my noisemakers -- if I can instead create knuckle (which is pretty easy in this game, and repeatable), I tend to do that instead.
@@TortugaPower i guess it depends on the difficulty level on wich you are playing!
it looks like im back in the navy as a sonar technician identifying these contacts
The only vessel in the sector - who do you think you are? The Enterprise????
this feels like silent hunter
when you fire at 80-90 degree angle from your nose to the target then yeah obviously you will have a very high chance to lose the wire. try a shallower angle on your targets if if you wanna keep them better
If you have surface to air missiles, I think you can destroy aircraft that are pestering you.
Wouldn't this technically be World War 4? Since in this universe World War 3 was about 20 years earlier and had ended after about 20 days.
Few questions about that game:
Can you man a sub in online co-op?
Can you play the dynamic campaign just with a sub alone?
Can you set it up so you can't just fly a camera above the water and hear/see threats that you wouldn't underwater?
1.No
2.? You can only control the sub, I'm not sure what you are asking.
3. You can disable 3d models for low solution contacts.
Go to around 39 feet and raise ESM mast and radar mast and the helicopter will be shot down with an surface to air missle.
How dose this compare to Dangerous Waters.

Wasn't the closest thing ever to an american chinese war 1950s Korean war?
If you're referring to the PRC, yes I'd guess that's correct. There was the Boxer Rebellion in late 1800s, if that counts.
I just checked the Korean war does CLEARLY count as such a war. But yeah, I meant all chinese countries in history and any war in was beligerents in. With Qing nationals (boxer rebellion didn't really had a nation form then) on both sides...it would prob. fit the label civil war better. Not clue if that counts... But thanks for reminding me of its existance.
