    I would agree with getting the HT instead of the HT2 for your 02'. What weight are you pulling and did it bump your mileage up. Diablosport Intune 1000 on 87 gas 12mpg 65 mph towing 5500lbs with the 00' 5.3L 3.73 gears

    Interesting, I had a 1986 chevy pickup, before computers. I built a 350 small block for it, and dyno tested at 475 HP. I towed a 30 foot trailer across the US and back . On average I got 10 miles per gallon, it did not matter if I was towing or running empty, 10 miles per gallon. I did change the rear end gear ratio to 11:12.

    I've done some 0-60 testing as well. I film the gauges. I pull my foot off of the brake and floor it. No brake torquing for a better launch. Eliminate as many variables as possible. Instead of a stopwatch operated by me (or a child), I go back through the videos when editing and start time when I see the oil pressure gauge spike before the truck even moves. It seems to be a good marker. I cycle through frame by frame to find the exact times. I note the time to three decimal places when the oil pressure spikes and when the speedometer hits 60. The difference between these is my 0-60 second time. I do several tests. I don't see the results until after so I can't tell how much an upgrade like headers or roller rockers or electric fan or new intake manifold or k&n filter change the times. Finally, I plug the time and vehicle weight into a 0-60 calculator. This tells me approximate wheel horsepower increases.
    I've increased fuel economy by 23% and wheel horsepower by over 50.

    Big Blocks specifically had a bad rod/stroke ratio (bad rod angle), so the piston skirts and cylinders will definitely wear faster. Doesn't really matter on yours because it already has 200K+ miles :-)
    BTW if NE1 is looking to do 8.1L upgrade, these engines were used on jumbo-sized Uhauls so u might be able to buy cheap cores from your regional Uhaul repair center. They had much bigger/longer intakes for max. torque.

    Purchased an edge obd style plug in kit about a year ago for my 500$ Pontiac grand am. As of a year. Gained +3 miler per gallon, front wheels actually pull so hard I need two hands, and easy plug in style is a no brainer🙃
    The tuning is right on par with the older style “piggy back” direct ecu, with wire taps.
    500$ for the car. 220$ for the chip. 30k miles later it payed it self off 10k ago.
    Oh and if anyone who works or knows how these chips work and are actually “tuned vehicle specific” reply… cause I’ve always wanted to take the chip that Is custom tuned, and see if I can swap it out car to car or is it really custom per car🧐🧐

    Best thing you can do is get custom programming done from a reputable tuner with something like EFI live or SCT programs. That will net you the most power AND efficiency for the money while being safe for your engine.... and a custom tune/ program can adjust more parameters.

    • @turbodiesel4709
      @turbodiesel4709 7 років тому +1

      Drew w Only problem is that it's very difficult to find a reputable tuner in many areas of the nation. Additionally, it can be quite costly, and for the average person and vehicle, it is usually not worth the expense. The bottom line is that simply playing with the electronic controls of your vehicle will not gain you enough performance to matter for your money. In fact, in many cases, you will find that your gasoline powered vehicle will simply use more expensive fuel, thus costing you a lot more to operate it on a daily basis, for no noticeable gain. The reality that nobody wants to accept is that internal combustion engines require much more extensive and expensive component performance modifications / upgrades to produce noticeable power gains.

    Enjoyed watching your video Brian. Taking the kiddos along for the ride is cool. Nice to have your family with you out to "play". Granted, we all know you were probably just "stuck watching the kids" b/c the wife wasn't around, but still, it's nice to spend time with 'em nonetheless. LOL Anyhow... The 8.1L V-8 Chevy trucks were such terrible fuel pigs. Thus, any positive change in economy was a welcome thing. As I recall, our nearly new 2001 Chevy 2500HD, Allison automatic, 4x4, reg cab, reg bed truck averaged between 6 to 9 mpg. It was absolutely freakin' terrible. That said, it was fun to drive and was a freakin' rocket ship from the factory. However, the fuel it consumed was absolutely insane. We eventually sent it down the road and replaced it with 6.0L V-8 gas powered Chevy pickup, which hauled nearly everything we tow and haul just as well and used much less fuel in the process.
    Another thing to note, I also owned a mint, low-mileage 1997 Dodge 2500HD 4x4 with the 8.0L V-10 gas engine. It was a consistent 9 to 10 mpg truck all the time, empty or loaded, towing heavy or barebacked. She was a fuel pig as well, but was still MUCH better than the Chevy. Additionally, it was as powerful as the diesels from the same era, (higher torque and horsepower as factory tested statistically) and was actually much faster and more fun to drive. It was a factory rocket ship with the 4.10 gears and 5 spd manual tranny that it had from the factory. That's one truck I do miss and regret selling.
    For the record, my current trucks are all 5.9L Cummins diesels now, with a couple of gas-powered exceptions which are not used daily. You simply cannot beat the power and economy of a 5.9L Cummins diesel engine when comparing to any comparable gasoline engine or more modern larger displacement fuel pig diesel.

    Thank you for this great video. Always wondered if real gains can happen with a hand held tuner. In extreme mode you might see gain if you get used to the way it drives. I feel if you use it more often and drive normal you could enjoy it more and get better MPG. Engine working not as hard to get you around. In economy mode the savings for you is 87 gas instead of 91. So thats money per gallon savings. Unless you feel its retarding the engine to a point that it might cause damage. Lots of good things and some bad like everything. Glad you had a great time with your family while doing the video.

    You are wasting money with the premium fuel. Premium fuel is for higher compression engines. The higher octane fuel has to compress more before it ignites and a lower compression engine can't compress it fully. The programmers do not change your compression ratio so you will have fuel that isn't being fully ignited and thus wasted because your stock compression isn't designed to ignite the higher octane fuel.

    @turbodiesel4709 7 років тому +1

    Bottom line is this... Do they work? Yes. Are they worth the expense? Nope, not really. Moral of story... Save your money!
    Plug in programmers for modern gasoline engines are really just a waste of money. Most gasoline engine programmers only do two things: 1.) They change (re-map) the ignition timing by advancing or retarding it. Same damned thing you could do back in the good 'ol days by adjusting your vehicle's distributor before they came out with DI (distributor-less ignition) systems. The cunt-hair of improved power is negated by having to run the higher octane fuel to prevent pre-ignition which leads to any engine's early demise.
    The 2nd thing they can do (but not always, depends on the programmer) is they can modify/change the shift points on an electronically shifted automatic transmission. Frankly, it's a very similar concept as to what the Tow/Haul mode switch does on your gearshift lever on a GMC/Chevy truck.
    THE END.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 7 років тому +1

      So it changes the timing because you cannot? So it changes the shift points because you cannot? This is a bad thing?

    • @turbodiesel4709
      @turbodiesel4709 7 років тому

      G Henrickson, as I said previously, Gasoline engine programmers typically advance the ignition timing and require you to always run premium fuel (the highest octane available, typically 91 to 94) from the local gas pumps. High octane fuel helps to combat against pre-ignition (detonation) that occurs with too much ignition advance. As you know, premium gasoline is VERY expensive. The performance gains from doing this upgrade are so minimal that you will never even feel it. You will tell yourself you notice a difference, but that is because you are mentally fooling yourself into believing so because you just spent a lot of money for basically nothing.
      Secondly, the shift points are moved to allow for more rpms between shifts, resulting in harsher shifting and more pull between shifts. This is sometimes more useful in heavier towing or hauling situations, but is totally unnecessary for the average person. Beyond that, it typically makes your vehicle less fuel efficient to boot.
      I tell you all of this stuff because I've "been there & done that" with a couple of my gas-powered trucks over the years. Lesson learned is that I will NOT be purchasing or adding programmers to a gas powered vehicle ever again. It is simply NOT worth the investment to spend a bunch of money and time to make my vehicles cost me more money to operate on a daily basis, for basically no noticeable gain.

      Turbo Diesel I've had a edge CTS2 on my silverado 5.3 for a lil less than a year , all it had before the tune was a cold air and throttle body spacer and 35s with 4.10s , dyno with that , before tune was 266-278rwhp (3 runs) .. AFTER the programmer installed on a Custom Street/performance tune it hit 306rwhp on first pull (after being cooled ) .. AND I get almost 3mpg better than I did .. now I have 4.56 gears and 22x14s American forces on 37x13.5 Nitto Trail grapplers and everything else the same and I get the exact same mpg as I did and a lot more pep ... without the Eco tune I'd be losing over 65 miles out of a full tank and losing over 11 dollars per fill up , It's DEFINITELY worth the money .. if you run a good custom hot tune on a gasser and it's 40+ RWHP it's def worth it .
