Start9 is one of my favorites. My only issue with them at the moment, is the lack of support for remote VPNs like Tailscale or Zerotier, forcing users to rely on slower and less reliable Tor connections.
Hello I became interested in this work. Do practical training on a server and SSD with read capability and multiple modes at the same time Or with the Turing Pi 2 Thank You
Hi there, which SSD should I attach to my RPi to which the blockchain would be downloaded? Because they don't list any SSD on their hardware requirements
@@dhoneysett my main question would be, since the start9 is https, would that make it easier to setup the BTCpay Server URL in Woo? I want to make a BTC only payments site with a RaspPi backend.
If you only need a pi4 with a high endurance SD card, where would you store all the blockchain data of Bitcoin? Do I need an external SSD or HDD for this? Also, I'd like to know if connecting the ethernet cable to pi4 is okay while controlling the software via my laptop's wifi (same router). Thanks.
good content, thanks:) maybe stupid question but anyway:) If you would want to do it super simple and easy and thus just buy the Start9 Server One, does it then come shipped w everything preinstalled for running the btc node as a plug and play or would you still need to do some DIY stuff still?
It's mostly plug and play. You will still need to install the certificates, back up, create password and connect to wifi. But after that you just choose what app to download and you are good to go.
@@dhoneysettThanks that sounds good:) I do suppose Start9 also enclose needed manuals to understand how to do those things correctly? incl a "how to" connect your hw and/or sw wallets to the node correctly and verify all is cool..
What will happen to my bitcoin wallets if I ever happen to move and be unplugged for a couple of days? And I also want to know what will happen if a war breaks out and the only thing I can hold to run away is a hardware wallet. Since they are all connected to a single node it seems to me that the funds could be inaccessible.
Unlike Umbrel, Start9 does not have their own bitcoin wallet built into their machine. You just connect your wallet to Start9 to reference the data on your machine. Your wallet will be on another device then your start9. Also you dont need to flee with your wallet, You can always regenerate your wallet with your 12-24 word seed phrase on another device. For your lightning channels it may be the case it would be tough to flee with. As your lighting channels are set up on this device. There is a way to back them up, but a little more complex. If worried about this there are other ways to use the lightning network with hosted nodes. Or you could always access your start 9 from anywhere in the world with an onion address it comes with, as long as its still running.
Hi Darren, after watching your good tutorial here I got inspired to buy my own plug and play server one and have installed it and it connects fine. However, when I enter w my pw the fun stops.. For reason I can not figure out the server does not connect to the start9 marketplace when I am logged in even though its all green/connected. I have tried logging in through another browser and also tried to restart but w/o any improvement. Would u have experience w any of this ?
@@dhoneysett Figured it out now w support from Start9 & just thought u and your other "fans" might appreciate the knowledge as well just in case... :) Apparently u can do what's called a "hard refresh" of the webpage in your browser & in my case that seem to have fixed it. In Firefox its command+shift+R . All the best & thanks Niels
“The largest consensus rule set” doesn’t vote on what is “Bitcoin”. This is a common misconception. Neutered nodes cannot facilitate transactions and are dependent on 3rd party miners. Mining hash power and their full-node protocols choose what is Bitcoin. In “the block size wars”, certain exchanges and their advocation/omission of certain forks had a more significant impact on Bitcoin than what the neutered-nodes chose to run.
PS. Just found you're channel-- I follow Bitcoin University (formerly Trader University) but he comes at it more from a Financial Services angle. I have enough experience in FS, you're channel comes at it from more the blockchain technology angle -- that was earlier in my life, and I tend to want to get to the bottom of things -- how it actually "works" on the tech level -- great channel for that purpose!
@@dhoneysett thanks Darren. The SSD adds a little bit to your $220 computer setup then. Extremely interesting, are you also running it as a Lightning Node?
@@franzlyonheart4362yeah that is a larger expense as well. I'm not running it as a lightning node. Challenges in channel balancing, partners and uptime have made it not worth much of my time. For lightning I just run phoenix wallet in which sets up a lightning node on your phone all in the background.

How does this node connect to tor? Is there a vpn option as well?
Great Video! Would the Start9 Server Lite work for this? It states that to run bitcoin it must be run in "pruned" mode? Thanks!
Yes it has all the same functions, but running a Bitcoin pruned node which is only certain data of the chain.

How long should it take to download the bitcoin blockchain to the node? For me it is downloading 2% a day???
Depends on what hardware you purchased and your internet speed. I've had a few that have taken a week others set up in just 2 days.
If you use a m.2ssd with a high speed Internet connection it does it super fast

Will use brave for add blocking and less tracking, but chrome would be other for apps and connections that don't work well on brave.

You're completely correct. It isn't free. Instead, it is open source and available for free, similar to how "free as in free beer" works. 🍺🍻😂

Then buy a miner.
