This guy works hard with through detailed tutorials. Good work Ben
Perfect timing - my Embassy One is due to arrive on Thursday
As a noob to crypto who has been casually messing around with an Embassy for about a year (Pi-based from Start9 & 2012 Mac Mini DIY) this video was IMMENSELY helpful for starting to wrap my head around running my BTC node & especially for helping me understand how to use the Lightning network. First video of yours I watched, of many more to come no doubt (subbed, obv). Thank you!
(and btw most of it is still relevant a year later, though Spark wallet seems to be gone from the Marketplace)
Until S9 figures out how to direct-zap instructions to my brain a la Trinity's chopper pilot manual, I think this is about as good a tutorial as can be made. 🤣 Great job!
Good tutorial, I just started the down load of Bitcoin core . Combination of this video and the start9 website . This is new territory for me , its interesting so far, so much to learn.
This is the kind of thing I have been looking for. Thanks for the video
Just a head's up! If anyone is having trouble getting their Embassy to backup using the instructions here and are running MacOS Ventura 13.1, the location of the hostname that you have to use has changed in the latest version of MacOS. On my system it no longer matches what the Terminal tells you or what Ben copies on the File Sharing section. The hostname that works is what is listed under "Local hostname" on the new Sharing section of General. It will be at the bottom below "Bluetooth sharing." I've reached on to Start9 support and they will be updating their documentation to reflect this.
Thank you! Awesome Video!
Nice one Ben. Will start to dive into this. Quite a nice shirt you're sporting too!
Haha I was hoping you'd see that :)
Awesome video. You covered a ton thx. One question: to connect a mobile wallet to the Embassy server, or indeed any device not on your LAN, doesn't it have to be over Tor?
Hey Ben Brave question why you use google not brave browser?
great, very informative video... do you prefer this over Umbrel?
thank you ben!
Is it necessary to set the “Use SSL” toggle switch on in addition to connecting Electrum Server in Sparrow Wallet?
Hi there, how do I connect Ledger Live to the bitcoin node on embassyOS?
Can you run core lightning and lnd at the same time?
The amount of confidence these videos give is unparalleled. No one in the space is boot-strapping harder than @BTCSessions! Thank you for the great content and inspiration!
Hey Ben, could you do a video explaining what are the best advanced configs for all things bitcoin on a new start9 OS.... thanks for all you do, really appreciate it
Just got an umbrel node up and running in a VM. I find this video, and see that Embassy OS has better backup options compared to umbrel. Good backups are the key to minimizing data loss... Now seriously thinking of switching. Jus got to look into the feesability of using the same blockchain data for Embassy OS. Haven't set up wallets etc yet fortunately.
Hows your Umbrel going or did you change to embassy?
@@sil15a I am still on Umbrel. You can use existing bitcoin data with Embassy, however there are technical aspects to Embassy that I don't entirely agree with as they currently stand with regards to how they encrypt the data on the drive you attach. I do prefer the services model of Embassy over Umbrel's labelling everything as an app however. Also I have managed to get a better backup situation sorted out for Umbrel that backs everything up to my existing file server
Ben just want to let you know I was unable to connect BlueWallet desktop for Mac with Start9 OS Server
Been wanting to run a Bitcoin Node for a long time but it seems so complicated. Why can't I just install Bitcoin Core onto an Old Mac mini and do it that way?????
Hi there, is it possible to copy the blockchaim from another node?
Very goog
Hey, This has been a really helpful tutorial so far, however, when I paste the url into the Specter desktop application i get a "503 Service Unavailable" error. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks OJ
Hey Ben- great video. What is the advantage of embassy over MyNode?
Without knowing about MyNode, but guessing from the name, Embassy (now StartOS) aims to be a full-fledged, privacy oriented self-hosted server environment. You can host a ton of other services besides crypto ones. Your own darknet websites, collaboration suites (CryptPad), encrypted messaging servers (nostr, SimpleX, Mastodon, Matrix & more), and even another full-on server environment (Nextcloud).
Can I say: My Bitcoin Node is properly running after the installation/synced of "Bitcoin Core"?
I mean, after that, you show how to config Wallet, LN, MemPool, backup, etc. I know how important those things are, but after the "Bitcoin Core" is synced and running, can I say my Node is 100% operative?
What is the difference between umbrel and start9?
I got a raspberry pi 4 running on umbrel.
What would I gain to go for start9?
Am I comparing apples with pears?
Specter is not showing up on my device. Did they get rid of it?
Hi great tutorial. It seem that Bitcoin proxy app is no longer in the marketplace. Would you know why?
How do you get the Plebnet Tab on the Marketplace?? I tried Start9 & Community registries and neither have it. ???????????????
Should first install be bitcoin core?
What about windows, is the process same as Mac OS?
Used your discount code and ordered a Start9 Server One. Will it be similar to this Embassy?
Hey, I got a Start 9 Server One and the first page wont load. they say its a Network issue. Anyone know how to fix this issue?
Can the Start9 be used as a server and desktop simultaneously?
I'm thinking about building a NAS system, can I incorporate embassy OS into the system and get the 2 for 1 cloud storage with the privacy and hosting embassy offers?
Dm above for informations
I'm 8 months out from this video. Any idea what happened to Spark Wallet? I don't see it as an option now.
Start9 on Raspberry Pi does not support Bitcoin nodes anymore, unfortunately.
It doesn't even work on a Raspberry Pi 5 :(
Are there other OS's that can do the job??
I tried Umbrel, but it doesn't work with NVME SSDs.
I bought a Raspberry Pi 5 just to have a Bitcoin Node and now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
Can You run a lightning node on this and earn Sats?
Q) when syncing sparrow to Embassy, am I only syncing bitcoin node to sparrow as my keys are on my cold card?
The (private) keys should only be stored in your Coldcard. You export the public keys to Sparrow, and you connect Sparrow to the electrum server on your embassy (Electrs) to get balances and to broadcast new transactions you might create with Sparrow and sign with the Coldcard.
I have a problem with Start9OS crashing, it randomly clicks automatically, and it keeps going backwards randomly, and it gets stuck on a GUI. It doesnt let me click something to move forward. It crashes - using my own Laptop which is the same spec as the Server Pure. Anyone had any similar issues?
SD cards come in 1TB nowadays. Can SC card be used for the blockchain?
No it’s too slow hence we use SSD drive either integrated or connected through USB3
An SC card isn't meant to read and write that much.
i'm very interrested, is there any way to lose our bitcoins? being hacked?
Dm above for more information
Whats the advantage vs Umbrel?
Sponsored video to promote and give more option than umbrel
opensource vs not opensource.....full fleged built node vs patched together trash
Hey 👍. What’s the default username /password? I’ve just set it up in my pi4, and want to ssh into it…
💪
36 hour sync? damn son
Bro, can you help by giving some guidance or instructions? Related to crypto nodes/host.
very cool your video! I liked!
One question: is it possible to mine bitcoin, through Bitcoin Core, on Start9? I know that in the version of Bitcoin Core for Linux it is possible.
Thanks!
If this was easy to set up, it would not require a two-hour video. I understand this tutorial covers some details and Bitcoin stuff, but I had my 1st Embassy for two years and never got it to work.
I now have a second one, and got through step 10 or so, then the instructions simply did not apply.
Where can I find a straight-forward how to video on setting up an Embassy that is current?
I'm doing a new one when version 0.4.0 is released (should be at some point this year). Lots has changed since this video but I don't want to do a new one when the whole OS will have a major overhaul soon.
I would reach out to their support team. If you bought a device through them, they are awesome about helping people troubleshoot everything.
They don’t recommend rpi for bitcoin stuff anymore
Impossible to sign in to hodl hodl, mistakes fault all the time, terrible nick name field crap
