    Scioto is derived from a Wyandot word for deer. The Shenandoah River, incidentally, derives its name from another Indian language, and also means deer.
    The Indians living near the Scioto were Shawnee and not Wyandot. The Wyandot were in Ohio at one point before migrating to Oklahoma. The Shawnee were in Ohio before the Wyandot arrived.
