  • It's been 2 years since I uploaded a video comparing an expensive Dyson fan to a cheap Walmart fan. I think it's time for a sequel! This time, it's the Dyson AM07 tower fan vs. a $15 Mainstays Walmart fan. Will the Dyson lose again? Let's find out.

Laminar vs Turbulent air flow likely the reason the Dyson was able to move more air, further.

Thank you for this video. I just watched the video from 2 years ago and got to watch this new one after 3 days you realeased it. I just came at the right time. I liked the last comment regarding the value. I agree if you buy two or even more, not 10, but a a few more, one could get a lot of airflow at at a lower speed, hence quieter and more uniform. That if the room is big enough to host more fans.

I’m wondering what effect directionality and laminar / turbulent flow have on this comparison. Laminar vs turbulent could be a factor - a laminar flow would affect how far away winds travel before succumbing to chaotic environments.
But I haven’t seen anyone mention directionality yet. Consider two light sources: a 15 watt LED lightbulb, and a 15 watt laser. They both produce 15 watts of light, but in very different ways. The lightbulb illuminates everything around it, but that light doesn’t go very far. A laser illuminates just a little dot, but can do so over hundreds, thousands, or hundreds of thousands of feet. In your fan comparison, what happens to the airflow readings if you take one step to the side? Given the Walmart fans have a large, circular design, I suspect that there will be a fall-off of speed, but I’d hypothesize it would be less fall-off than the highly directional Dyson fan. But I haven’t run tests so I don’t know for sure. Which would be the better design then? If you wanted to cool a larger space, maybe Walmart fans would be better, but if you wanted to keep specifically one spot cooler, the Dyson fam would be better?

I think you can still generalize which fan has better wind speed regardless of directionality, by pitting them against each other while on their rotation settings, and calculating air flow over time for one full rotattion. Whichever fan has a lower angular range will be tested for the full range, and the other fan will be tested at that same range, and then pick like 10 unique points in space to place that anemometer. Whichever fan blew the most air across all 10 averaged air flows over time will win out.

Really cool analysis and a great improvement of test measures after the previous one. It puts things on proper perspective of what you get vs what you pay. One observation - you have not measured the watts of more expensive traditional fan. It is more of formality than information, but I would still consider it a good thing to do in a well constructed review and analysis.

  • @oryanol

I commented on the video 2 years ago, I was still at uni 😂. As I explained before, you are actually moving less air at a reduced speed with the Dyson design ("bladeless"). On your next video, I'd recommend you show a CFD or air flow simulation. The reason why you got more air from the Dyson at a further distance is because it covers a smaller angle therefore is more directional compared to the open fan which has a wider angle thus shorter distance

fans dont cool the air ..only make it flow..However, adding mechanical action can cause some uncountable changes. so probably it will make a pressure drop in the entrance and pressure rise on the exit. it's like takining an air release the energy pass to other side and give the energy back again :D . so there is no difference in total .. but , also adding some mechanical/ kinetic energy to the air molecules means heating them while they drain their speed.also the air passing fan is cooling the motor of fan which means heating. So its simple in closed environment you drain some energy from electricity and add it to this environment /room which means ALL FANS are actually HEATERS. how much it heat ? same much you drain from electricity (Watt).

I got one of the dyson fans when they first came out and I was working someplace I could get an employee discount on them. That fan has been used for my wife to sleep with for 7-10 hours a night, over 300 days a year, for over 14 years now. Are the Dyson fans overpriced? Absolutely. But for some people the steadier noise of the Dyson can be a more effective white noise generator, and you will get a fan that you'll probably be passing down to the next generation in good working order.

just measure wind speed does not translate to airflow amount 100%. It's only measure air speed at a single point in space. Better to measure the airspeed across different points in front of the fan then multiple the cross section area by the air speed at each point to get a volume of air moved per second in order to compute airflow rate. Since an centrifugal compressor can produce air velocity significantly faster than either of these axial fans but have very airflow because it can only move a small amount of air.
But from a physic stand point, momentum scale linearly with velocity but kinetic energy scales with air velocity square. So it's 4 times as much energy to move air twice as fast. It's generally more efficient to move a lot of air slow than a small amount of air really fast, for the same volume of air moved. So if you really want to maximize cfm airflow, a ceiling fan with largest diameter will move the most amount of air using the least amount of energy.

I think what we can conclude is that Dyson is great at making things that suck and bad at making things that blow.
Adding more of a serious note here: I love Dyson for its continued strive to innovate. On design front, they absolutely nail their aesthetics, but I feel their products suffer because of it. Despite going against the stigma surrounding Dyson as a more of an engineering focused company with many of the products I feel it’s the case of over-designed and under-engineered or as I love to quote, “Form over Function”.
Seemingly a pioneer of the bagless vacuum industry, Dyson really does stand out with their vacuums. Especially since they are continually looking to improve the design. They are on version 15 of their popular cordless vacuum.
If you want to another Dyson video, I’d recommend the cheapest vacuum you can find compared to the newest model of Dyson. The price difference is staggering as usual, but in that test Dyson might actually give you a run for the money.

I don’t know about that. Their blow dryer is hands down the best available to date. The imitations that are still kinda pricey do not compare. It’s lasted me far longer than all the other ones I’ve had. I’ve used it at least once every single day for the last 7 years, and it hasn’t given me any issues so far, which is amazing considering I’ve dropped it numerous times. It is the only blow dryer that dries my thick hair effectively, quickly, and without causing irreversible damage with each usage, unlike all the other $100-$200 dryers I’ve used throughout the last couple decades. Their hair curler that blows air absolutely sucks though. But their hair dryer works for all hair types. Ok the end bye bye

Line graphs are not a good idea for these kind of situations because they could be interpreted to mean there is some kind of significance at the values between each measurement. For something like this, a histogram is better as it communicates the data is discrete. @MarkSpurrell I think you did well!
