My first time in 10 years going blonde and also did a BIG 10 inch chop to a medium length blunt bob 2 weeks ago. I told my new stylist I wanted a balayage but now, because my hair is short I wish I had more blonde closer to my root. I go back in 8 weeks and definitely telling her I want a root tap. I want as much blonde as I can get as close to my root but without that harsh demarcation line. I don’t mind going back more often as I need to anyway to maintain my cut. I wish I knew about what a root tap was this first time.
When Kristy was describing what her planned changes were and showing where she planned to place the toners I thought she was being too picky b/c her hair already looked wonderful. The changes were obviously an improvement. I was in awe when she was done.
Awesome. I'm standing here with brassy orange & yellow, after leaving the beauty school!! Ugh. They didn't even offer to fix it with one of these techniques, so I'm fixing it myself.
You have exactly the same colouring as me. I don't want to highlight my hair so often but have a few grey strands ..so the second option should be good for me I think. Thanks for the info.
Tnx for the info about alcalinity/acidity. Very helpful, as this was my bigest concerne about demi permanent..how can I make sure it doesn't lift my base? Now I know. Verry informative! 👍🙏🙂
One gal at Sally’s told me to only smudge the 2 colors only where they meet each other , otherwise the whole strand will look one color . I’ll be using 2 different shades of blonde . One for the roots & one for the length because I want it too look 2 shades over all to get it too look like Kate Hudson hair
I have very blonde balayage going on I normally do mine sections vertical thank you so much again your hair is gorgeous I'm just unsure of the color maybe a 6in
Hi Wendy, Thank You so much for watching! If you are unsure of your natural level just compare it to a natural color chart. You could probably even look for one online. You section vertically to tone? If so that’s ok as well. Sometime I’ll even section diagonally on thin hair, to prevent any noticeable lines.
need to study your color alkalinity. you said the other gel acidic says it produces 40 percent LESS alkalinity, but somehow you felt it was saying MORE. Thanks for defining the application differences. Really clarified it for me!
Kristy, First of all, I love your videos!!! Just a suggestion, for some of the viewers that are critical on color videos, you may want to point out that the color you're seeing on your screen may not be the actual color because the tint control on ones device screen is not always true to color. As a matter of fact, it is near impossible to get true color on any device screen. However, you may be able to get close. My thoughts as a expert colorist. I mirrored your video on my TV from my computer and was amazed by the color difference. Keep up the great work. Raymond Marc
I would love to know why some people start at the top, some start on the back and some do a certain shape. When doing a root smudge/shadow whatever; does it matter where you’re starting your dark color; too, back; etc?
An ingenious idea to use temporary colourants such as this (Igora mousse) to do root shadow, melt etc.! :) I've only seen people using permanent dyes to achieve these effects ;) Well, of course it also depends on whether you want the result to be permanent or not, but this is a great way to start, and great idea for a refreshing change, anyway.
So I want to know since I am not a stylist but looking to get my hair done. I think I had something like this before and it faded out after 6 weeks and turned orange/ brassy color. My natural color is a great color and bleach highlights look great with it. So my question is if a stylist does a tap on you how long does it last?
Hi I would love to see a root melt, bayalage on a brunette with long hair. If possible with box brown hair dye on their hair with 25% grey root. Thanks.
Thank you soooo much 💜💜love all of your videos so wonderfully explained ,and thank you so much for all of your videos super detailed beautiful gorgeous hair you have ... thank you for new updated videos 💜💜💜🌹🌹🌹🌹
What a happiness to watch a new video of yours 😃 does it work even if you don't have highlights ? I have some greys ang looking for something to "hide" them !
Hi Sophie, Thank you I’m going to try to get a new video out every week. In a couple of weeks I’m going to upload a video dedicated to grey coverage. You can do this depending on the amount of grey you have. A Vibrance toner will probably cover 30 to 50% of grey. So if you do this you will probably want to use the same color of your base. If you want you can send me a pic of your hair on Instagram and I’ll take a look.
Thank you for this. So helpful. My stylist will do my roots with color (cover some grays) while at the same time apply highlights/lowlights. However, it always leaves me with that stripy, demarcated look, that I absolutely hate, no matter how I part my hair. Its not until I get that slight root growth that I like my hair, lol. Do you think it’s better to do highlights first, then root tap afterwards? Not sure why he doesn’t do it that way.
When I have gotten my hair highlighted, and the root tap or root shadow, they do the highlights and then do the roots at the bowl. Recently, the girl who did my hair moved so I went to someone new and here I am trying to figure out how to do it myself. She only did the highlights, and I hate the stripy look. I tried to part my hair 10 different ways and it’s just horrible. I just left Sally beauty with a Demi permanent and some clear gloss and I’m going to attempt to do this myself.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way!!! I though I was going crazy!!! Yes, no matter how I part my hair, it doesn’t matter. I have always done my roots in between my appointment with E Salon color and going to order sooner rather than later. Which hair color do you use from Sally’s?
Finally, someone adressing these colors, not everybody wants white blonde. I'm a level 6 and want hair very similiar to yours. Can you make a video using Wella, I'm not talking about T-18, etcetera, just demi wella toners.
I’m using wells illuminal in the d sohade 10/1 , and I do my hair myself , I’m wanting to add some warmth to my hair at the roots, what method and colour would you suggest I go for, that blend well together , without looking like I’ve coloured it , my natural colour is a mousy brown, however I have a lot of grey mostly at the front of my hair, and more salt and pepper in the back.. I just feel my colour now, makes me look washed out .. and old looking
When you do the root tap( for me 6n/6nb shades eq) and golden blonde highlight result desired… can I use a wow comb to comb the root tap down to mids- then blend in the 9 ?
I've been using a 6nn and 7nn for years as my base color. I've done highlights - triied some bleach but now Iz'm going gray. I had grown out a lot of gray - tempted to "go gray" I left the bangs and side pieces to the side and used a 10nn and it looks great! Now my gray is coming back. Could I put the Ash blonde on the whole head? I know I cant lighten my brown but wiil it brighten it? Then tap brown on regrowth .. i am at an awkward state
Hi: Did you say that it will cover gray? I’ve been blonde for so many years but the maintenance is to much anymore. I do the blonde highlights to blend with my grays… will this method help? And cover grays? Thanks so much!
If a root melt is semi I don’t understand how it does not just look stripy again in one month??? How does it last between appointments?? I want light but low maintenance and to have a natural root .. thx
If you are covering your greys with one of these procedures you need to use a permanent to make sure it actually covers them. How would that work? Would you in the last 10 minutes of processing comb it through towards the highlights. I am a bit confused. I do my own tint and get the foils done every 3 months.
Hi Mich Well there are two ways to go about this. 1- if you are covering grays as a root touch up. I would tackle this as a normal regrowth application with a permanent hair color and definitely not overlap or bring the product down to the rest of the hair strand. This could darken the existing color. And you shouldn’t see the need to do so. 2- if you are covering gray as a root touch up and also doing highlights. I would cover the gray as one process like mentioned above and then after that highlight and once processed apply the root shadow, tap or melt; with the toner of choice. Note: if the gray is not more than 30% or resistant you can definitely just highlight and then proceed to shadow, tap or melt the regrowth with your Demi permanent toner of choice. I hope this helps.
The effects and durability of this coloring process is reminding me of when my. Grandmother would get a “rinse” b/c dying your hair had a stigma off floozy, but a temp rinse (usually blue to darken the gray) was okay. 😊
I will get to all your messages they are so important to me.. I have been hospitalized since yesterday. I would appreciate prayers because I have swelling in my brain and having some procedures done in a while
Geez you make this sound so complicated and people who have never highlighted their hair won’t even take your advice because your complicating everything… I’ve am a natural dark blonde and highlight mine always have and it’s trial and error if it’s your first time. Then you will learn just do a test highlight… this gal is confusing all of you
Thanks for watching and for letting me know you think it’s too complicated. I’ll keep it in mind for the next time. If you have questions I’ll be happy to answer them. If you know why and how things happen during hair processing you will not need so much trial and error
I’m always happy when you address gray hair options.

Hi Kristy, great job describing the various color techniques. I also like the demonstration.
Your hair is gorgeous and looks so healthy. Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

OMG....I just subscribed because you are so clear when you explain how to do, and when, and what!!!!!!
Excellent,thank you 👋👌🍀

Thank you Holly. Itmeans a lot to me to do a good job

Love these! Can you please cover how to darken hair that is too blonde?
That is where I am at too. I’ve been blonde for over 8 years… I just can’t do the maintenance anymore. But I do need my grays covered.
This is such a helpful video! Love how
you explained the whole process. 😊
I'm gonna be bold and go: root melt on bottom layers, root tap on medium layers, and root shadow on top 👍

How to avoid getting the dark color from getting on the blonde parts. I did it and my whole head turned brown Which wasn’t what I wanted
That's amazing, I'm going to try this today! Thank you for sharing this❤

I would love to know that too!
