Harry and Martin are the stars of a sitcom called "Men Behaving Badly" (Harry left after season 1 stating he felt the show wasn't working with him in it and it continued on with Martin and another actor: Neil Morrissey). I'd recommend it but it's very 90s so not sure how well it holds up now. Might be worth a look though...
Men Behaving Badly is archetypal of every nineties flatmate sitcom (although its basis was a book written in the eighties) where it's very much a period piece now, not just the lad culture element but how unattainable that lifestyle is in 2024. But I'd still second the recommendation because it's very funny. And inevitably people who didn't get it will say "dOn'T wAtCh ThE fIrSt SeRiEs" but it should be watched from the beginning, partly to provide context for the second onwards and partly because it's better than a lot of people think.
Martin Clunes is a national treasure, most famous these days as Doc Martin which is more a family friendly primetime dramedy, so probably not good for reacting to even though it's a cute and fun little show, years back he was best known for 'Men Behaving Badly', which I loved at the time but haven't watched it since so not sure if it's the kind of comedy which has aged well, I'd guess probably not! He used to live in a village not far from me in Southern England and all the villagers said what a delight he was, he'd walk around like a local and get involved with the community, not just lock himself away in his large house. As someone who grew up playing rugby in Wales this is exactly how we always pictured English public school rugby players! 🤣 I played a lot of games against public schools and they always thrashed us because they were so good, but we'd still make sure we kicked the crap of them for good measure so they were black and blue the next day! 🤣
Yep, nowadays, Martin Clunes and his family live in a house, possibly a farm, in the beautiful rolling countryside of west Dorset, in south-west England. Doc Martin was a long running gentle comedy drama that ran for many series over many years. It was set in the fictional, picturesque, north Cornwall coastal village of Port Wen, (Port Isaac in real life). Martin Clunes played Doc Martin, the village doctor/GP., who was originally a gifted surgeon in London but had to leave that role as he had a phobia of blood ! He also appears to be on the "spectrum", (perhaps autism, but never mentioned on the show), manifesting itself in rather abrupt, direct, honest speech and a dislike of socialising, which regularly caused offence or misunderstanding to the locals. Deep down though, he seemed to be a kind, caring man though - just with an often unintentional off-putting manner on the surface. It's better than it sounds of you like gentle comedy drama and the frequent shots of the beautiful coastal location.
I dont know myself about the aging well of Men Behaving Badly as watching it myself online and still finding it very funny, but that is only me so.... lol.
In the red light district of Amsterdam I asked the bar owner of a dive who were the most trouble he'd ever had had in 30 years in his bar. He said without a doubt it was a Brit police rugby team , they were crazy bastards He said he had to break his rule of never calling the local cops as it could affect his license , but had too after they threw his bouncer out on the street , When the local cops turned up they said, " look it's our fiends from England we played against in rugby, did nothing and left the rugby team behind to cause more mayhem.
Yeah also seen in Amsterdam Brit police rugby team beat up everybody in red like district. Even seen bar owner being beat up and killed by Btit police rugby team while mayor of Amsterdam being hit by Brit police rugby team. Bar owner and about 234 bouncers thrown into street while local cops just laugh outside while Brit police rugby team smashed the whole red light district and no one did nothing. Looks like Amsterdam likes Brit police rugby team who smash the place up, but local cop like watching and laughing because they said look it's friend from UK. Amsterdam now like war zone now because Brit police rugby team.
I haven't seen it since the 90s, but I used to love Men Behaving Badly, with Martin Clunes. Not sure if the humour is as good today, or if I have changed, I was about ten years old when it was on TV. Or if it translates for people on the other side of the pond. I can barely remember it. But I do remember owning it on VHS, so I must have liked it enough, at the time.
"You're not sure if the humour is as good as today" lol... Today's TV comedy shows are absolute trash, comedy shows in the UK have been trash since Inbetweeners or about 2015 barring one or two exceptions... That's why there's very few, if any modern British shows on reaction channel's or why near enough every poll has older pre-2015 shows in top UK comedy lists... Men Behaving Badly is still in my top 5 all time British TV comedy shows!
Martin clunes is an absolute star and has a brilliant career. my favourite show of his is "Doc Martin" in which he plays an odd GP with a blood phobia. he also had a lovely documentary featuring a man who lived with wolves xxx
The English do like to sing a lot, certainly around sport. Although, our Welsh friends have the best voices, imo. For such a small country, they've produced some fantastic singers.
"Shit on the ceiling , shit on the floor, shit on the window, shit on the door, shit all over Portsmouth Poly la-la la-la la." - And on to the Akash for spicy comestibles.
Martin Clunes (the one who isn't Harry Enfield or the one who might be a very young Peter Serafinowicz but probably isn't) worked with Harry on a 90s sitcom called "Men Behaving Badly", which was everything it sounds like. He's since become a really popular - and very good - actor, while still being a funny bloke.
Same for me. We even learned these songs which amongst others we'd sing before downing our pints. Great times, I'm nearly 50 and I can still do a sub 5 second pint
@@wyterabitt2149 everything is mocked by someone. Don't worry what others think just have fun. Some of my best experiences were on rugby tours around Europe. Going on massive drinking sessions with the teams after.
The is a pub on the corner near Moorgate tube station inside London's business district , and a small patch of grass , that has been the scene of endless drunken city yobbo's fighting/mooning and generally getting rat-arsed drunk for decades and was once a great place to have a drink on the way home. Rarely seen anymore , but I kind of miss the old school city boys.
Even during the height of football hooliganism in the 80's your average football hooligan was actually renowned as being quite soft and poor at fighting, I myself had several run ins (by which I mean I was randomly attacked) and they were normally too drunk to even throw a decent punch, I always think the football hooligan films make them out to be much tougher than they actually were in reality!
You ain’t wrong KB. We do like to sing 😅. Me and my mates were absolutely shitfaced at a white castle of all places whilst on a stag do and we broke out into song 😂
Chuffed that you checked out one of my recommendations KB 😂. Martin Clunes plays a not to dissimilar character in Men Behaving Badly. Harry Enfield was also a lead role in its first Season. Although most would say season 1 was it's worst season. With regards to the Rugby/ Football thing, i dont think there's any negativity between the fans, its aimed more towards the players. In football player's Dive, fall over and barrel role for ten mins when they get the slightest touches on thier shoe laces. In Rugby men just headbutt each other for 80mins solid 😂
My next door neighbour Mike Teague played rugby for England and the British and Irish Lions. In Australia he got his face bust open and when they tried to get him to go off to get it seen to by the docs he replied...''I ain't got time to bleed'' 😀
Actually, they are taking the piss out of rugby players, not fans (who are by far the more sedate of the two).. particularly in regard to the behavior of certain amateur and Uni players after a match. It's actually frighteningly true to life, at least in my day - but that was forty years ago!
Rugby clubs do have some weird ritual, my sisters boyfriend joined one, they asked him to get on his knees hold his hands out in front of him, and ask him to open his mouth, then they put a little silver spoon on his tongue, he was watching the man that put the spoon there thinking something was going to happen to him, that was when someone behind him head butted him, which made him swallow the spoon. Afterwards, they all cheered, and they drank heavily for the night, i can't say it's all true, but it's hard to think why he'd say something like that
🇬🇧 Anyone who's been to an after Rugby match party will know this fairly commonplace! Extremely rude behaviour, songs of very rude content & everyone is mortal ( Or drunk & off their trolleys - heads) And a great time is had by all! It's just De Riguer after ones team has won or not won! Everyone is totally Rat Arsed.. Terrific fun! Peace & Depravity 🇬🇧🙋🏻♀️🤪
If you love this, I think you would enjoy Men Behaving Badly, which had both Harry Enfield and Martin Clunes in it, but weirdly, Harry wasn't very good in it, and he got replaced by Neil Morrisey who was perfect for the role and basically saved the show and made it into a classic (in my view). There's lots of drunken antics in it similar to this one (although with a touch less head butting. lol).
Cant say this enough: watch Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. Richard ayoade and matt berry in a totally unhinged comedy. With appearances from graham linehan and noel fielding. It doesnt get much funnier than this.
The Haka = Mainly known because of the All Blacks aka New Zealand Rugby Union team. However The Kiwis aka New Zealand Rugby League team also do a Haka, it's not as intimidating with the lighter but faster league players.
You have to watch Men behaving badly. Season 1 was ok at best and had Harry Enfield in it, but it really started with season 2 when Neil Morrissey took over from Harry. The Episode's called Drunk, The good pub guide, and Cardigan are very funny.
Weird sport, rugby union. It was completely amateur (at least nominally) until 1995 and so had - and to an extent still has - in much of the world a reputation for being quite elitist and played by boys who attended expensive private schools and elite universities, which is probably where the laddishness and drinking culture comes from. It's a bit like college fraternities in the States, I suppose. It also had a rather ugly association with apartheid in South Africa, although things have changed a lot there. Ironically, despite its association with the social elites, it also has serious money problems. See also cricket.

I think it improved immensely when Niel Morrissey took over from Harry Enfield. There was a genuine magic between them.
I rewatched it recently and think it holds up surprisingly well!
Harry himself pointed out that the show wouldn't have been commissioned without him in it but also that it wouldn't have been a success had he stayed.
It's absolutely class, the lock in and the whole pub doing we are sailing is my favourite scene

He was in a n episode of Chiller called Toby, really nice horror short that one

This is a good exaggeration of most UK pubs back in the 90s small crews of lads full of ale & loud mouths 😂
The English do like to sing a lot, certainly around sport.

I have heard of football supporters making the grave mistake of taking on a group of rugby fans which happen to be amateur rugby players. 😱😨
