This is one of the most difficult removals on any Mercedes with ABC suspension…..the tandem (2-part) pump. It both operates the ABC suspension as well as the power steering. It often malfunctions on these complex hydraulic fluid suspension systems. The dealership charges a lot of money…..thousands of dollars, to replace. An you do it yourself? Simple answer….yes.

Yes and no. The main high pressure ABC line, I leave alone. It’s secured and is not going anywhere. The rest of the lines, I remove.
Man o man what a tough job that was- just finished installing a standard pump on my 2003 SL500- 13mm screw in the back was hard to get to- had to remove tensioner pulley to reach front screws on old pump- took me all day, had to take several breaks- cussing and fussing the whole way theough😂😂- it was hard man but so happy I saved money and completed- thank you Brandon for your videos

Thank you for the video. I have a 2013 cl. When starting today fluid as splattered to the front of the engine and the ABC malfunction error came up on the dash. Do you have any idea what it can be? I am trying to have an idea what it can be so I get all the parts ready to do the replacement myself over a weekend. thank you for your help.
Without actually being there to see the drip pattern and to check the lines and pump assembly, there’s no way of knowing. It can be the pump…..a line….you’ll have to visually identify the leak or rupture.

hello, my abc pump only shows 100 bar when the engine is running normally, when you add gas the pressure increases to 160-180 bar, what do you suggest?

Changed my front accumulator on my CL55… week later I can see drips coming from underneath the pump…😬…. The pump holds pressure so hopefully it’s a washer or something…. Any advise 😊
You have to identify the leak. The pump is holding pressure so that’s good. But that leak can indicate an impending problem that can and will get worse.
Was the pump, removed the pulley. The housing had a crack. No idea how that occurred. CL Back up and running 👍🏼

Hi, 2001 S600 W220 here. I am close to getting the old one out but I am stuck. On mine, I have a metal fluid accumulator-vibration dampener (cylinder 4" long by 2" diameter) welded solid to the abc pump (yours shown has two banjo fittingsæ much nicer). It is on the side top of the abc pump not underneath of the ABC pump and a metal tube goes to a bayonnet fitting that is attached to the pump. I have the 2 front E12 nuts off of the accumulator bracket. I have the fitting disconnected from the ABC pump. However, the metal tubing continues down towards the steering rack I think. Can you educate me on how to get that assembly disconnected, please? Do I have to lift the car and uncrews the tube from the top of the steering rack from underneath the car, please? Regards, Bo
That black rod connects to the engine block with bolts. Use a E14. Use a combination of small extensions, and you can use a 10mm socket if necessary. Put your hand down there and follow it. Remove that E14 bolt and then remove the same bolt size that secures it to the pump.
The black rod/U-bracket is easy. 10 minutes. It is the huge pressure tube that goes from the dampener to the banjo bolt or the pump AND THEN continues WAY down toward the bottom running between the engine block and the engine compartment wall. @@boandersen2895 If you’re referring to the high pressure ABC line…..I disconnect it from the pump and leave it there. It serves no purpose at the point of conversion and it isn’t in the way of anything.

If you decide to leave the ABC pump in the car, do you have to cap it off at the pump or the lines going into the strut? or both? Does the pump just run dry and "die" at that point? Thanks
If you decide to leave the ABC pump in place, I would cap off the lines. At the strut connectors only. With the ABC system being non operational, you can leave the pump dry or leave fluid in the reservoir to assist with pump lubrication. Not much fluid is needed, if any…..since the abc module will not send a signal to pressurize the ABC side of the pump. If you decide to replace the pump with a standard power steering pump, I would also remove the ABC reservoir. Only the power steering reservoir is needed in this instance.

@@goldelementautoworks Thanks for the quick response! and you answered my next question- where do I get the plugs to cap them off. I had Strutmaster before and they were terrible. The car felt so unstable that I was afraid to drive it. The car wouldn't even brake properly- it was lunging forward. I got rid of them and put ABC back on. But since you've made so many videos praising neomax, I'm thinking with my next ABC failure, to go the neomax route. The install seems to be very simple. The back might be a little challenge but plenty of videos on YT with instructions. I'm just afraid I take the neomax route and the car ends up feeling the same way as Stutmasters
@@clutchinv1803 Strutmaster is the worse thing you can do on a Mercedes. Not adjustable at all. They ride too high and are bouncy. Silvers Neomax allow you to adjust it however you want the car to feel. Dampening and height. No regrets. You’ll thank me later. 😂 😁😁

On the Mercedes forum someone said, and I quote “Recirculate/loopback the existing ABC hose system so that the pump output feeds directly back into the ABC reservoir, bypassing/disconnecting the rest of the system”. They said running the abc side of the pump dry will seize the pump.
Have you found a reliable supplier for rebuilt tandem pumps for SL500 cars? Some of your customers must want to keep the ABC suspension. Buying from an unknown supplier in China is problematic for me.
My ABC pump is installed on the car and is working. I was thinking about future problems. The car is a 2005 SL500. As far as I know, ABC pumps that fit 2003 -2005 SL500 or SL55 will work. I'm not against buying a rebuilt Chinese pump. I'm trying to find a supplier that has a history of supplying these pumps and some reference users so I have some confidence that the pump I buy will work.@@abdulameeryaseen9362
I have not. I know many consider the China ones. But I haven’t heard any feedback on them. I sell the good used ones that I remove.

@@savv213 That may be true, due to its location. The line runs near the pump. What model, the SL? A 500 or 550?

Removing the hydraulic suspension from these cars completely defeats the purpose of them.
Only if you think the suspension ‘defines’ the car. Which it does not. Most people drive a SL for the power, looks and luxury. Comfort even. And yes, the ABC does add to the comfort and luxury. But without it, a properly dialed in coilover suspension still provides comfort. And I enjoy long trips without failure. It’s happened too many times to too many people. I deal with customer every day who had given up on the car….until they decided to save their car with coilovers.

That’s likely the pump losing the ability under normal idle to create needed pressure. Unless the suspension requires less pressure at standstill and normal idle. But I don’t think that’s the case. Giving it gas increases the speed of the pulley and increases pressure. The pump should be able to have a stable pressure under either condition. Verify that.
