  • This vid is aimed at people new to corporate settings detailing how to integrate, play the game and succeed. It may also help those who feel stuck in their current position - it may not be the work that you're doing, but HOW you're doing it.
I made this vid last year but never put it up for some reason but I found it and thought what better time to post than the start of a new year!
I'm not implying that you do not need intelligence and hard work. I'm saying to work smarter. This is my point of view from my personal corporate experience and this is what was required to succeed.
Sorry I didn't edit I just wanted to post!
I hope this helps and I'll see you soon! Happy New Year!!
    xoxo,
    Rachelle
ps. I promise my shirt wasn't buttoned that low at the manager's desk. lol

Everything in this video was dead on. The only thing I'd like to add is that be very careful of who you do decide to trust and vent to. I am a believer that you should NEVER share anything with a co-worker that you would be afraid for other people to find out about in the event that your co-worker blabbed, so watch your wording. Once you THINK you have found someone to confide in, test the waters by sharing something personal (that you'd still not be afraid for others to find out about) and give it some time to see if it circulates. Even still, BE CAREFUL. Office gossip is not what you want to be the center of. Great video girl!!!!

This advice is very good, but it takes work - research, resilience, and thick skin.
I work as strategic HR in a fortune 100 company (for 8 years+), and without fail, when a black woman falls into performance problems, it is due to 'interpersonal issues.' That looks like: failing to share all your business (we don't KNOW her), being identified as 'strong' (we find her off-putting), and only doing the work you are asked to do (she doesn't take initiative/demonstrates leadership or doesn't partner well).
Just be conscious at all times...
    Great video!

THIS...is so true as a fellow black female HR professional whenever I've had ANY feedback it's always they don't 'know' me or 'I'm not accommodating enough i.e. I won't allow the manager to do something completely unethical or illegal'. And TBH it's all because I'm a black woman in a position of power that most in America (including our OWN) don't think I should have for this or that reason.
It's sucks to realize that while white people can literally be dumb as a doorknob or have the SAME personality as you they're NEVER going to be called the same negative terms.
I've learned to only share superficial stuff about yourself and get in environments where there are other minorities because it makes a HUGE difference if you're not the ONLY person of color you see in the office.

She is definitely telling the truth. When I first started my intern the first thing someone did was say "hey girlfriend" and I thought you don't talk to anyone else like that so fall back. I simply responded in a nice way and then she stopped that. Also some of your "peers" or co-workers will try to be your boss but in a nice way as she said they should know that the two of you are at the same level and your paycheck is the same and you already have a supervisor.

I had a job I hated so much I would wake up feeling sick every morning. No job is worth your health or peace of mind. Yes we all need money so you have to do what you have to do, but try and keep all of that in perspective.

THANK YOU! I know I am on the late show in terms of viewing this video, but I can not thank you enough for saying everything that you have said. If I see one more young woman dressed like she is going out to a club.....or one more young woman that laughs and giggles when a White male in a suit pays them attention....I am going to scream! *Smile* The most important take away for anyone watching this video is to understand that EVERYONE you will encounter in a corporate office is human. Some of the most "secure and confident" people in a business office are the ones that truth be told, are the most insecure. People need to understand that speaking proper english, being confident and using discretion when it comes to how you "check" someone, does not make you a sell out.

This is an extremely important video for us women. I moved into a management position just over a yr ago. I did my previous job really well and although I was not aiming for management I was given the opportunity because of the relationships and the respect I got from other managers. For the first six months I struggled to make it 'fit' my personality. I realise now that it's a game and I can play it just as well as others, although I think we fake it til we make it in most cases lol. After hating the job and yearning for my old job I have come to love the position because of the effort I have put into it. Please do more videos and this topic!!

Another comment I would like to add for the people who actually read the comment section is pick up on some of the things Rochelle "said" without necessarily "saying". Because honestly, she doesn't know who may be watching. She is giving valuable info but read between the lines. Don''t go to work with too little shirts on,DO wear a camisole if you are going to wear a button down shirt that you don't plan on buttoning all the way up, and please don't have your thongs and underwear showing when you crouch down to grab something that fell. Don't just sit & eat lunch with other black people because that is who you are comfortable with and for Pete's sake DO NOT be the angry black "ghetto" person some expect you to be. It is all about how you handle the situations and that includes the way you handle some of "us" too. They will be QUICK to label you ghetto and that is an extremely hard title to shake.

Awesome job on a very complex issue. Yes, there is a game, wether you think or believe in playing. You are a player the moment you said, "I accept the job" But play smart and take Jesus with you. Doors will open, you will grow into a true professional on all levels. And remember to know the RIGHT resources. Borderhammer, nailed this. But note it will challenge you to be a better you!! When you take the approach that this is for YOU you will learn & grow and it will transform you. It will be a challenge and know situation is the same but keep this video close by to refresh ur spirt and to regroup when u feel you are losing the race. Be blessed.

As someone who has been in a corporate setting for 15 years within various leadership positions, there are two major things that have helped me progress in my career more than anything. #1 - listening more than speaking. I have been able to create successful situations for myself just by actually HEARING what people are saying and taking what they have said a step further. #2 - choosing a sponsor in every job I ever had. Meaning finding, befriending or associating with someone who was always a level above me who would always be an advocate for me to get me to the next level. I always found that one person who was always willing to help take me to the next level both male and female. Not a mentor, but an actual sponsor, someone who could actually do something for me. Those two things helped me move very quickly within my career.

When I finally jumped through every hoop, crossed every T, and dotted every i, I finally get offered a promotion. I'm excited until I get to the new department and find out that another person that got hired had only been with company a short time and had no experience. Guess who is getting all the training and opportunities to shine? I'm thankful for the job, but trying to not be bitter because if seems like they hired me because they had to (union) and they're just waiting for me to leave. Saw your new haul video. Welcome back!

You are so right about perception. It's not what you know but who you know and how you get along with others. If you come in all big and bad, it will get you nowhere. Hi, I have come from the blue collar sector. Worked my way up to Regional Manager through hard work and experience. I must admit I have never thought about this game until recently. I recently had a new line manager start. Like you say in your video he knows nothing but has a perception about him that he wants to go places and knows everything. The director loves him!!! I have been banging heads with him for the last few months. He is all you have described in your video of which I have found very helpful. I am not afraid to admit it but this manager and they way he has been has pushed me close to the edge. I have been in tears and at breaking point. I have a supportive friend at work who has helped me open my eyes. In fact this is why I found your video. Again it has been an eye opening experience watching your video. I was willing to start from the bottom to gain the knowledge and experience in the HR world. I currently work for a major staffing company in my local area as a customer service rep. The office I work in is small and I'm the only one without a degree. Sometimes I feel like I'm already at a disadvantage. We have weekly meetings and I rarely have anything to add because I'm new to the career field. I will no longer use that as a crutch or let it hinder me. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us. I have placed this video in my favorites to reflect back on from time to time. God bless you.

Corporate America is the pits! I am not made for it either. LOL! I don't work hard but work smart. I do so well that some get jealous of how I don't need to ask very many questions. My biggest problem are the companies that try to mimic the corporate model. The company that I am currently trying to leave is horrible. If certain people don't like you, you don't move but the skill set can not transfer to other companies. It's crazy. I liked this video because you touched on some major points. "We" are perceived upon entering in the door. One woman decided to confront me in the hallway with my supervisor. She pointed her finger at me and raised her voice. I apologized for her feeling that way and she kept going on. My supervisor said nothing. I later told my supervisor on a sidebar that she was wrong for not defending me. I pulled the phone conversation, because our calls are recorded and emailed my supervisor and cc'd HR. I have not had a problem with the woman and my supervisor had to eat her words after having told me that this lady had a reason to come up and speak to me. Just last week I got $25 gift card because someone spoke highly of me. It's a little too late in the game though.

Thank you for this video. I have spent some time in the corporate world as an HR Assistant in my early 20s and made some poor decisions. I did not get fired, I left but I really could have made a strong living if I knew how to play the game.
I am now a mother of two, in my late 20sfour classes away from my BA in Economics and I just got hired for a Banker position.

This message was right on time for me because what better way to start the new year with a new job. I got it...removing emotions and not taking things personal and being business minded by working smart, not hard, and definitely networking by utilizing your resources. Awesome video! Thank you so much for this and Happy New Year to you!

This was excellent advice!!!! I’ve been working in corporate environments for 14 years and I’ve been in EVERY situation you’ve mentioned plus more and I wished I had someone give me this kind of advice. I definitely came up in the “school of hard knocks” because I’ve had some hard lessons to learn in learning “how to play the game”, it’s truly only by God’s grace that I’ve been successful in advancing in my career. Young people listen to this great advice, I’m not old but I ain’t young either and had I had someone give me half of what you said in this vid I would be a lot further in my career. I rely heavily on the quote that says “life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react”…this statement has been very instrumental in my profession and even my life for the past 7 years…it’s help me to think first before I say or react to anything. Thanks for this vid!

I appreciate this video so much. I turned in my 2 weeks notice today to start a new position in 2 weeks. I've been in corporate America & everything you are saying is soooo on point!!! You MUST play the game no matter how good you are! I was with a very stable hospital system but got "stuck" partly because I "cliqued up" with the wrong people. I have a good reputation however, some of the ladies reputation was not so professional. That is VERY important. I "mingle" with everyone but sometimes you are judged by who you are associated with as well. I have to learn how to let go of my emotions. I will watch this video again before I go. Like I said I've been in corporate America for a while now however, this video is a very nice refresher!

Great video! So true. It is hard for many of "us" to toot our own horn. Far too often we let many of our work/career accomplishments and strengths go unnoticed. Learning to relay our accomplishments to those that matter in a non-braggadocios is imperative when playing "The Game."

This is probably the best video I've ever watched on UA-cam. I'm currently trying to get my bachelors in Computer Science and I have family members who are in the industry but they have not told me how to maneuver in cooperate situations yet. I've only heard the horror stories, unfortunately, that come with being black in the office. I'm so glad you posted this and let new people like me know how to handle certain situations because I am notorious for letting my emotions show on my face or simply snapping out on people I work with (I work weekends at a grocery store as a cashier) and I know in a professional setting, others want nothing more than to see someone get escorted out. This also takes away from a lot of the anxiety I have been having lately about even applying for internships and jobs once I graduate. I am just too scared of the new atmosphere but watching this video really helped take edge off. Thank you so much!

Very nice video well done and I enjoyed your approach! "Mentorship"/"Mentoring" is a huge component here...unfortunately there's only a few of "us" available in corporate America in positions of authority who can take that "Newbie" under their wing and provide adequate mentoring. What's disappointing is that some of us when reaching that certain level DON"T look back and provide that helping hand.....and this is the bigger problem. Corporate "Mentoring" is key....only and only if those .5% in positions of authority humble themselves and offer that guidance.
    Great video again!

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. I'm 46 and have been self-employed for the past 16 years. I've figured out that the way for me to advance in my industry is going to be for me to have to enter the corporate environment. I start my job this Monday and am seeing this the week before. I thank you sooo much. My BIGGEST concern about going back to corporate America has been this "game playing". I simply didn't see it nor understand it. I just knew it was there. As you say, we are just not wired that way and for that reason, I didn't want to go back. I agree with everything you said 100%! These were the tools that I desperately needed. Lastly, YOU NEED TO WRITE A BOOK. FIRST A BLOG, AND THEN A BOOK ABOUT THIS TOPIC. You have a unique, smart perspective that you should definitely share. You are so right that we simply do not have these resources and it simply takes YEARS to learn and the majority of us just bail.

Great points throughout this video. I am 18minutes in and I am not sure if you touch on this later, but employees need to be mindful of the company's culture. For example, if I have an issue with my current supervisor, I have to keep it to myself. She thinks she is perfect and no one at the organization really cares about entry and mid level folks. Its not the greatest, but it works while I am looking for a better opportunity.

This video came right on time! I'm going to tell my daughter about this. She landed an internship at the Proctor & Gambol Company for the summer and it's "overwhelming" her! I've had to speak with her on a few occasion to calm her down. But the good thing is the people who recruited her are graduate from the same college and they've been with the company 15 and the other for 18 years.
I'm interacting with them and her to make this transition easier for her. But to be honest I don't think she will stay with this environment! It's so NOT her personality! Well I'm going to pass this along, I know this will help her a lot! THANK YOU FOR THE INCITE!

OMG I greatly appreciate this video you have NO idea. I recently graduated from college and being an African American woman I get so nervous about eventually having to enter into corporate America. Coming from a predominately white liberal arts college I'm MORE than aware of the high level of ignorant situations I can encounter. But there is still so much more I don't know about the "working-world" and I don't have much people to tell me about it either.
