Big plus: thanks for fast-forwarding through the repetitive parts. So many UA-camrs today can take 30 minutes to show the same two minute operation over and over. And by the way - I like your techniques and the results!

"The story of the rocks"--how great is that. I will also copy your weathering powder organization. Thanks much!

By far, the most realistic stone I’ve seen on UA-cam. I love the technique and method. I use most of the materials that’s being used in this video but haven’t gotten the technique down. Thank you, for sharing yours

This was excellent! Thank you for talking through your thought process. Especially appreciated the carving thoughts about rock motion and history. The ho person for scale was smart.

Great work Doug. I’ve always been a little surprised by your choice to model the 1970’s, assuming the 30’s-50’s would be a better choice, but now that I’m a few months away from 50, I’m starting to get it. Thanks again for sharing, I really appreciate the time you devote to everything you do.

I get enough of the '50's from the kits we make...and I'm a bit nostalgic for where I grew up the older I get.

If you add a little vinegar to the hydrocal, you can slow the dry time down and give yourself some more working time. Chipping is a problem with hydrocal after the scenery is finished and will leave a bright white spot. I put about a 1/5 teaspoon of Rit Dye Crystals (brown, black gray or tan) to color the plaster slightly to prevent white chipping. Rit Dye is an acid dye and will also slow the drying process down.

Will try and do a video on that soon, but it was just AK Interactive Asphalt, spread thin with a. pallet knife. Then weathered with some chalks and washes.

Nicely done !!! I am faced with trying to model shale which is a sedimentary rock in very thin layers which I haven't figured out how to do yet.

Use the plaster. Instead of chipping, pick up some fine tooth combs from the dollar store. Drag one across the rock surface. Let it set a little. Use a brush to smooth it. Use a knife to to chip the edge.
