As a retired Veteran of Naval Aviation, Enlisted the F4D Skyray is my all time favorite Carrier Aircraft. Awesome detail! Really nice build.
Thank you so much! And thank you for your service!
Magnificent tips and tricks for spectacular detail Chris. This is a video to keep close by for reference.
Your model of the Skyray is a gem to behold. Well done sir, well done.
AirHammer out!!
Thanks man!
Chris, you are an inspiration! It'll take me years to get there but...gotts get started this summer afer it gets to hot to fly here in Phoenix. I already want to paint my new Motion RC B25 to the Marines Pacific Blue. Thier version of the B25 was just a beast!
The weathering really does make all the difference. Military planes, especially Navy fighters...just get beat to hell. Weathering really brings them to life!
You're a modern day Artisan! Thank you so much for sharing!

Amazing details.
Thank you! Cheers!
love to use plastic model techniques on r/c 👍looks great
Thanks! It all directly translates at any scale. 😊. I got my start in plastics as a kid and still love and collect them. I Don’t build as many as I’d like these days though, haha
Nicely done!
Thanks!
@@Thercgeek How's your Dad? I haven't seen him since Col. Thacker's 100th Bday party.
He’s doing well. 😊
@@Thercgeek Good to hear!!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Nice 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love the paint but love the dog a little bit more lol
Haha, me too! His name is Scooby and he’s the brains of this whole operation. 😆
Aww so cute he should design more planes for the big brands and get sponsors and be the first rc dog pilot
Chris, your painting and weathering skills are ridiculous! My favorite part of your builds. Question: What are you listening to, in you earbuds, when you are painting and weathering? Thanks.
Thanks so much! I like to listen to sermons from some of my favorite pastors as well as some business podcasts. Though, at one point I was on the phone too, haha!
@@Thercgeek That is so awesome Chris! I just got back from church, this evening, myself! There are so many great podcast out there these days. Have you listened to "The Fighter Pilot Podcast" ? Former Navy F-18 pilot. Good stuff! Too many more good ones to list. Keep the great vids coming.
I have heard of that one, but haven’t listened to it
I’m curious if you’ll do a custom build on the flightline Corsair bubble top. Be neat to see you try the livery they used on the Corsair’s in the movie devotion.
That would be a pretty neat project for sure. Would need some F4U-4 mods though since the flight line is an F4U-1. Maybe down the road I’ll look at that. At the moment I’m gearing up for the next build. 😊
Buddy you sure are a master craftsman in my book? it would be awesome to have you to build one of those. I wouldn’t know how to contact you. I wouldn’t even if it feasible is a beautiful aircraft. Great job.
Does the tail hook work?
I love the results!!!
All of your hard work looks great!!!
Thank you! Unfortunately, the tail hook doesn’t work…for now. 😆
Ok, I'm blowing the whistle. This guy has been taking total credit for these beautiful scratch build planes. There is a 4 second sequence in this video that reveals the true secret.
He has a partner doing inspections, and for all we know may be the lead dog in this pack.
Look carefully at :56 thru 1:00 and you will see the truth.
Dang, you found me out! 😆. He’s the true brains behind The RC Geek operations.
I knew it. I knew it. Now we have full disclosure! Confession is good for the soul brother. I like your partner. Keep up the good work. @@Thercgeek
Great Job can't wait to see it fly. I have a question on the tapping I primed my plane then hit it with the main color I want to use I use low stick masking tape for where I wanted my strips try the baby powder peeling back slowly and still have the paint peel off the plane in big section and have to go over it with a brush to fix it. any way to keep paint from coming off when trying to remove the tape thanks
I really like to use frog tape for delicate masking. Was the area that lifted up previously painted or bare foam? It’s harder to get the adhesion on bare epo foam so requires a bit more prep underneath.
Ok I will switch tape. I used two coats of white primer over the whole plane I waited 2 days before next coat and then shot the plane area and set my areas I wanted to stripe. Then when I tried to pull the the tape off of the separation areas the paint started to pull off the edges @@Thercgeek
Man that looks great, I used some of your tricks on my depron Gene Martin custom modded skyray.
What paint was used on the airframe that the tamiya acrylic thinner won't melt or damage.
I used MRP acrylic lacquer paints which spray super nice in the airbrush. I did spray a light clear over the airframe before weathering as I noticed that the thinner was lifting up the gray a bit which I was quite surprised by.
@rcgeek, how long do you have to wipe off the panel line wash before it starts to set? Does the thinner start dissolving the paint?
You can let the acrylic dry completely and the thinner will still lift it up. Thats the nice thing about it. Just be sure the acrylic thinner doesn’t lift up your base color. I had sprayed a light clear before weathering because the thinner was lifting up the gray to my surprise.
How many coats of matte clear coat do you apply ?
Just a single light dusting. I don’t spray a matte clear on very heavily. I did spray a light dusting before weathering too as I noticed the Tamiya thinner was pulling up some of the acrylic lacquer gray.
